Mike, I usually remove all sprouts from leaf nodes, below the flowers, as I do with tomatoes. You might consider doing that. I keep my Carolina Reapers, ghost (Bhut Jolokia), and Sepia Serpent in 5-gallon pots, some of them two plants per 5-gallons. I find that they need that much to really thrive.
Yeah, these things are in way too small a pot for sure. It's getting warmer here and although it originally started out as an indoor growing project, I'm thinking about planting them outside in my garden for the summer. The ultimate goal is to see massive amounts of peppers.

Thanks so much for this comprehensive update Mike, I’ve so been waiting for it as I’ve been pretty much mirroring your timeline with my Jalapeños. The main thing that’s struck me from your experience is to do with the lighting. I’ve been puzzled because, even though I’ve got around 600w of LEDs over a 5x3 ft area at around 18” height above plant tops, I’m only getting a PAR value of around 100. The plants seem to have been growing ok except for some serious leaf curling on the newer growth. This may have been due to overwatering or, possibly, really low humidity that just seemed to creep up on me, I mean around 35%. But, having seen your experience of reducing leaf curl etc by reducing the lighting, I’m thinking I’m going to try that approach. Also, like you, I’ve seen the huge difference bigger pots makes and also the counter-intuitive (to a newbie like me) effect of pruning; how it seems to flick a switch to start those tiny new buds growing like crazy. Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful, Mike! Sounds like your peppers are doing well. 600 watts! That's a ton of power for peppers, lol. I'd definitely turn it down. Is it really 600 watts? Is that what the company rated it at in their advertising or did you use a watt meter? Just curious because that's a ton of watts for only 100 PAR.
@@MikeKincaid79 I may have my wires crossed here. When you say about reducing yours to 150watts or 100 watts, are you referring to the power consumed OR the equivalent output in old-fashioned terms (similar to the old incandescent bulbs; 60w bulb etc). Okay I can't say that didn't hurt when you cut the pepper plant 😂. But I knew what you were doing. Still ouch. looks like you're going to have a ton of ghost peppers and Carolina reapers to eat hahaha those plants are looking awesome great job. Mine are coming back to life the ones that got almost killed by the frost . He definitely need to do some powders out of those peppers. Dehydrate them and then use a coffee grinder to grind them up. You can just sprinkle a little bit into warm up food.
The amount of flowers on these things now is crazy. They're starting to open up and I've been helping the pollination. I really need to get them in bigger pots. I could probably turn the lights down even more too, lol.
I have managed to grow 6 Reapers and 6 Trinidad Scorpions on my south facing window sills here in the Uk. Started growing them back in November from seed, my only problem is that, it's still to cold for them to go in the greenhouse and they are taking over our house. They are all very bushy now and just over 2 feet tall. Loved your video but they can be grown without all that lighting equipment. Happy growing
The tent temp is a couple degrees higher than the house so probably about 72 degrees. In a tent like this without wind or insects to pollinate, it's a good idea to hand pollinate and that's what I've been doing with these.
For sure. I'm pretty amazed at how fast these peppers grew roots. Deep, rich soil seems to be what these plants want. I may need to put them in 5 gallon buckets, lol.
Mike. How do you keep the temperature inside the greenhouse? Only the heat from the lamp is enough? Im about to make a small greenhouse and i got a ceramic lamp (for reptiles) with a digital temperature controller.
I purchased reaper seeds from Ebay and i now have them growing up to 2 feet plus but no peppers and i was wondering if you need another plant for pollination.I live in Queensland Aus,they are growing on my veranda in some shade, four big stems for four months now, any advice?
I don't think you need a cross pollinator for them. Just have to give them more time. Of course, it's your fall/winter now so you will have to bring them indoors.
Those type of pepper plants can fill up a 5 gallon bucket like that .the roots are amazing I think they grow really far down that's why they're so hot. Lol 😂
How bright do you use the light? I thought the brighter the better. I have a spider farmer 1000w, I tend to turn it up and down, I just re potted due to shit head bugs in my soil so I'm using 40 to 60 percent at the moment at around half a meter distance.
Gotcha, 1000 watts is way more than I had at my disposal. I had a 240 watt light and ended up turning it down by about half to get the results I did and the light was raised above the plants a few feet. I finally did turn it up all the way but I think 1000 watts would have been way too much in this little tent.
If you find the time, I'd really like for you to show this grow tent and how you set it up. I don't understand all the tech lingo but it sure looks interesting. Do you use all the piping, blowers and filters? Thanks for putting out such a great channel.
Glad you enjoy it, Melvin. For these peppers, I don't use any piping or fans, I just open the bottom and top a little to allow air flow and it works out well. I guess it depends on what you're growing in there. I did a video on setting it up a few videos before this one was made.
they look good! The chimayo need to be repotted. this is a once a year deal. The one still in the garden (all of them are 3 years old) began to bloom when 4 inches high. this year, 20-30 bushes! the grill is going and they can be roasted there. we still have a half bushel of dried red Hatch chili. Gonna have to get over there around Labor Day to get chili wreaths and so on. Then, before coming home, a few hundred pounds of roasted reds. Hasta, nieto! Remember do not name those turkey poults! :)
I think you will find that the Reaper and super hot peppers in general, each plant tends to have it's own personality and or timeline on when or how many fruits they produce. Even at the early age of these you can already see one is out preforming the others.
Oh yeah, I'm finding that out for sure. You said it well, "it's own personality", lol. One of the ghost peppers has a nice pepper growing on it while the others don't have anything.
Hi there I'm wondering whether you could tell me How far away from the plants is your light is and how regularly you water them? It's my first year growing chillies and am looking for some guidance haha
Great video, thanks for sharing. 👍 I had a question, do spider mites attack Carolina Reaper plants? Or do they avoid them? Ever see them on any of your plants before?
I've never had them on my pepper plants but I've had them on other house plants. I think they'll attack just about anything but the solution is really simple, just spray them with soap and water or a solution of sulphur.
I've grown a bell pepper plant from seed since last year in my bathroom window, gets the most sun. It's about 25cm tall now and flowering. When is it safe to move it outside, staying in a pot?
Make sure the danger of frost has passed in your area and you should be OK. It would be best to wait until the temps don't go below 55 since that's near the bottom end of the growing temps. They won't die below that, just slow down or stop growing. They may die below freezing though.
My first week after transplant into solo cups had me worried,Most plants willited significantly. They perked up eventually. What light schedule do you use?
Those look amazing!! I have some that I will be up potting today!! Can’t wait to do a video on them!! I’ve debated whether or not to top them. Still undecided 🤦🏽♀️
I have the same 27" x 27" tent and had bought the VIPARSPECTRA XS1500 instead of the XS2000. Amazon had it on Prime Day for about $100 - a really great deal. Watching your other videos I was starting to regret not getting the XS2000 but now seeing you had to turn it down to 100W I'm happy I went with the XS1500 (150W max). So did you try to root those cuttings? Free plants!
You definitely made the right decision going with the smaller light. I got a little overzealous, lol. The 2000 is just too bright and intense for most anything you’d want to grow. The setup you have is a nice one. I haven’t tried rooting cuttings with it yet but I’ll do more projects with it this winter when I do more indoor growing again.
When they start putting out buds means the plant is under stress and is trying to hurry up and make seed before they die. Less light bigger pots. You never can have too big a pot.
Just bought acoule plants probably around the 3 months stage. I have zero knowledge in this department, if anyone has any tips like how often to feed them. What to feed them with. How much light vs no light a day or anything else important that I may need to know. Much appreciated.
I'd put them under at least 14 hours of light, I prefer 16 to 18 hours. Feed them as they need it. Watch the leaves and adjust according to how they look. When they get closer to flowering, you'll want to back off the nitrogen and apply a bloom fertilizer. Alternatively, you can plant them outside now if you're in the northern hemisphere and they'll grow naturally all summer with little intervention on your part, aside from watering.
I know nothing about growing peppers I have 1 normal what we call in my country Spanish pepper 🌶plant and what's cool about this one is you only water it and it gives you 🌶.but how about other pepper plants or paprika or tomato plants indoors do you need to pollinate by hand?
You could have gone from seedling strait to the 3 gallon pots and saved yourself a lot of work. Those peppers grow so fast they are root-bound before you know it.
I am scared, haha. I may eat some just for the experience but the rest are getting sent in a giant box to The Overworked Gardener, lol. Look up his channel.
Hi Mike from Epsom 🇬🇧 You just can't help yourself 🙈 You always cut sooo much off on top and slice up leaves then enthuse about roots 😂 if I did this it'd probably die. It works for you, lovely lot of buds 👍🏻 But will the plants be big/strong enough to support so many peppers?
@@MikeKincaid79🤞🏻 ❤ Mike my neighbour's whisteria grew into all my shrubs in my garden, my son and I went out in Oct and cut it all out. There were so many healthy shoots I took loads of cuttings, I just chopped in stuffed them in pots, only 1 died so now I have so many I could go onto business selling them! 🤦♀️ Isn't nature wonderful, I left them out in a sheltered spot uncovered through the winter and snow. They're full of shoots, I love plants.
I wonder if animals or bugs ever try to eat reaper peppers? Maybe some ants or deer get into the garden and snack on some peppers or do they avoid them? Is it too hot for bugs and animals?
That was the original plan and seems to be going well but we're getting closer to spring and I'm thinking about planting them out in the garden when the weather warms.
the flowering is more related to them being root bound than the light. as soon as the roots hit the bottom of the pot and starts going around the pot, it will throw out flowers. if you transplant, they should get bigger and stop flowering.
The shape of the pots actually is bad for the root systems of plants - I'd go more into it - but a UA-cam or Google search will change your world. Also - Peppers will go to fruit when they are root bound - they will continue growing until their roots feel root bound - then fruit. If that makes sense!
@@MikeKincaid79 yeah I lost 4 chilies doing the same and got root infection and now I have 3 but for strange reason I already seeing chilli flowers starting to bloom on 1 plant and 1 don't grow over 13cm. So any tips would be great
I'm definitely considering it. These things are starting to flower like crazy now and I'm trying to decide if I should let them or wait until I plant them outdoors.
If you'd have hung in there less than 2 more minutes, you'd see that they all branched out beautifully with new growth and multiple branches instead of just one single leader.
@@MikeKincaid79 The only reason to grow plants that fruit, is for the harvest. If a commercial pepper grower like Ed says its not a good idea to top your plants, I'd be more apt to listen to him, than you.

I'm sure that's what was happening. Soon as spring came, I up-potted them and got them out in the sun. They flourished all summer long.
Seriously, I wasn't prepared for that 😳 6:30
I know, that was tough, lol. It worked out well in the end though.
@@MikeKincaid79 I appreciate the input
What kinda light cycles are best for the peppers? 18-6 constantly?
That's what I do. Not sure if there's a "best" but I like to give them at least 16 hours of light indoors.
Hi Mike, have you ever tried growing a redwood trees from seed? I’m trying but I’m not sure if I’m doing things right. Any advice?
Kim 🇨🇦
No, but I'd love to do it sometime.
Well apparently you have to be patient because it takes forever for them to germinate
Amazing, thank you
Glad you liked it!
I know nothing about growing peppers I have 1 normal what we call in my country Spanish pepper 🌶plant and what's cool about this one is you only water it and it gives you 🌶.but how about other pepper plants or paprika or tomato plants indoors do you need to pollinate by hand?
how do you feed those peppers?
I was using miracle gro but it would be better to use organic amendments if you want to eat them.
You could have gone from seedling strait to the 3 gallon pots and saved yourself a lot of work. Those peppers grow so fast they are root-bound before you know it.
Great video! What Are you planning on doing with the peppers if they mature? I would be way to scared to eat one. XD
I am scared, haha. I may eat some just for the experience but the rest are getting sent in a giant box to The Overworked Gardener, lol. Look up his channel.
Hi Mike from Epsom 🇬🇧
You just can't help yourself 🙈
You always cut sooo much off on top and slice up leaves then enthuse about roots 😂 if I did this it'd probably die. It works for you, lovely lot of buds 👍🏻
But will the plants be big/strong enough to support so many peppers?
I think they will. The stalks are much more robust since pruning. Time will tell.
@@MikeKincaid79🤞🏻 ❤
Mike my neighbour's whisteria grew into all my shrubs in my garden, my son and I went out in Oct and cut it all out. There were so many healthy shoots I took loads of cuttings, I just chopped in stuffed them in pots, only 1 died so now I have so many I could go onto business selling them! 🤦♀️
Isn't nature wonderful, I left them out in a sheltered spot uncovered through the winter and snow. They're full of shoots, I love plants.
Wow, he's like a sports newsman. Loud
Loud and proud
I wonder if animals or bugs ever try to eat reaper peppers? Maybe some ants or deer get into the garden and snack on some peppers or do they avoid them? Is it too hot for bugs and animals?
I'm sure they are, lol. They might be smarter than us
Muy bien!!!!😊
Are you growing the whole pepper lifecycle in the tent?
That was the original plan and seems to be going well but we're getting closer to spring and I'm thinking about planting them out in the garden when the weather warms.
Being root bound will cause flowering. You need 5 gallon container cloth pot.
Yeah, I definitely need bigger containers for these guys.
I cant wait to see these start to fruit...they gonna be too hot to handle
Yeah, me too. And I'm sure they'll be the hottest thing I've ever tried.
the flowering is more related to them being root bound than the light. as soon as the roots hit the bottom of the pot and starts going around the pot, it will throw out flowers. if you transplant, they should get bigger and stop flowering.
Yes, it worked like you said as soon as I got them outdoors in bigger pots.
The shape of the pots actually is bad for the root systems of plants - I'd go more into it - but a UA-cam or Google search will change your world. Also - Peppers will go to fruit when they are root bound - they will continue growing until their roots feel root bound - then fruit. If that makes sense!
yeah, air pruning pots are much better.
nice video. i think i need to start doing custom thumbnails like you do, among other things.
One step at a time. I went for several years before making my own thumbnails.
@@MikeKincaid79 I’ve heard custom thumbnails help improve video performance
I thought that plants naturally use the sun so how can LED lights be too bright compared to the sun?
It's a matter of how close they get to the light and how intense it is. You can definitely burn plants with these things.
Bigger pots they will grow huge
I like the way you think, Nate!
I have to make do with a window sill for my chili peppers so I only just planted them.
Light should not be able to hit the roots lucky you still have 4
WTF they are crazy roots 7:30
Hello 🦋
Hi
Why you show the roots open yo light?
Watch more videos and you'll understand
@@MikeKincaid79 yeah I lost 4 chilies doing the same and got root infection and now I have 3 but for strange reason I already seeing chilli flowers starting to bloom on 1 plant and 1 don't grow over 13cm. So any tips would be great
Hmmmm that osmotic pressure in the leaf tissue looks off
Probably is. Looks great now that they were up-potted to 5 gallon pots and put out in the sun for over a month now.
@@MikeKincaid79 mine get that way in early veg, over water , excess nitrogen , or sun burn 🤷
@@MikeKincaid79 amazing once they kick in... They kick in!
Top them
I'm definitely considering it. These things are starting to flower like crazy now and I'm trying to decide if I should let them or wait until I plant them outdoors.
Buckets
Maybe?
🤣
6:33 You lost me here; you could have increased vegetation by simply removing the flowers at this stage.
First
Well ain't that something, lol
@@MikeKincaid79oh yes the little things in life.
Please?
Please don’t cut the top off of the peppers?
Too late
Those peppers are getting big. Please do nt eat those HOT HOT HOT peppers. :l
Aren't you going to share them with me?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Some good content, but please, for those of us who get motion sickness, stop swinging the camera around. It makes it difficult to watch without getting sick.
nice video!!!! peppers are hot. 😊
Yes, they are. Let's go eat some!
I have to make do with a window sill for my chili peppers so I only just planted them.
Nothing wrong with that!
