My wife is a librarian and she has given a whole new perspective on what it takes to actually preserve knowledge and media for future generations. Streaming is by far the most convenient thing, but it drastically reduces our chance that we'll have certain media that exist today. I do think these disc will be amazing for archiving and possibly at-home storage. With that much storage you'd be able to create your own digital library that is curated with the media you currently own. That way it's not stored off-site, but locally for you and your family to enjoy.

@@gaztheman7879 Keep in mind that Denis Villenuve doesn't want deleted scenes on his DVDs, so that is even less value for your physical purchase. Not to say other directors will follow suit, but companies may try adding less content to the disc for the same price.

No internet means no movies, no games, etc...I really don't like the sound of that. Is the internet forever? If we get into a war, there would certainly be an effort to knock our internet connection out, and along with it all those digital entertainment options. Physical media must survive.

I'm younger than everyone interviewed here and while I originally like streaming and VOD for a while more than physical media, the past few years have proven me wrong. Streaming services can remove their library at any time and with VOD the "purchase" you make only gives you a "license" to view the content, not actually own a digital copy. In that way VOD is more like an NFT or a certificate that says you own land on the moon vs. something like an MP3 you used to buy on iTunes. Aka it's a scam and while it's obnoxious when Blu-Rays have included previews, it beats having your content stripped away from you because you only bought a "license" to view a thing vs. an actual copy of the thing. Hollywood is a stagnant dying business for a reason and the sad way it has tried to redefine ownership is yet another sign of that fact. So yeah for the stuff I really care about, I'm going with physical media unless it gets open sourced somehow.

Why can't we just have DRM-free digital movies? That way you at least have the option to backup and play your movies on whatever device you want, even if you lose access to the account you bought it from, or the movie gets removed from the server, etc. The music on iTunes are DRM-free, video games at GOG are DRM-free. How this will be used depends entirely on how fast the data can be read from the disk. It very well may only be useful for storage and people may even find retrieving information from such a medium to be slow. For example if you can only get 10 megs a minute from it, you might not use it for storage at all. Playing video above 480p would be a stretch, too.

You would have to transfer your movies yourself to that disc in the same way we can create custom DVDs with multiple movies in it. However, the process becomes really tedious and time consuming if you own hundreds of movies. So, it's not practical.

While I would love this for myself, I would like to see movie studios use these to backup EVERYTHING they film for a movie in an uncompressed format, including behind the scenes stuff, scripts, interviews that are done, all the raw footage and the final version or versions. Make 3 or 4 copies of the disc and then store them in different locations.
This way we would never lose a movie ever again because a fire happened, or the film rotted away, or because some director 30 years later adds in a bunch of stuff that kind of messes up the original film or maybe cause the salt cave they were stored in had a cave in or flood or something.

The investment that would have to be put into it...
New machines to write the discs.
New players to read the discs.
Hope that people want to go out and buy a likely expensive new device, that also likely wont bring any new resolution or quality advancments....
All so that they can buy old movies and shows that have been bundled together...
Because new movies wont get bundled. (Aside from maybe a combo version if its a sequel)

That kind of optical disc is for professional enviroments
We will never have another disc for home media, UHD Blu-Ray is the last one.
The data transfer of optical drives and discs is slow af, even the oldest and slowest HDD (5400rpm) is faster than any optical drive to date. that's why games must be installed to HDD or SSD to work properly
The disc could be useful for movies, but let's be realistic, current players have issues reading triple layer discs, an optical drive capable reading over 100 layers (like this new disc has) will be expensive af
If people are barely buying movies on 4K Blu-Ray, what makes you think they will spend thousands of dollars on a new player, and even more expensive movies?

even the oldest and slowest modern hdd has an average transfer speed of 800 megabits/s
a blu ray can barely hit 200 megabits/s with an average optical drive

I will always buy and collect physical media and I’m FAR from being the only one. Always remember that you only own media when you have a physical copy. When you buy movies and TV shows digitally you’re purchasing a licensing agreement, not the actual film. And the streaming model doesn’t work. Nobody’s making any money, not even Netflix. Lastly, no person who regularly buys or collects physical media would ever get something like that. Frankly, it’s fucking stupid. Sure, it might be good for an entire TV series, but no movie collector would ever buy something like that. Not to mention all the money making issues on the part of the actors and filmmakers, plus having to create a new way to play them? Yeah not gonna happen. Physical media still does really well, just look at something like Shout! Factory and their Scream Factory division for horror. The studios need to step up their game, and we’re starting to see them do just that with 4K and standard Blu ray restorations with awesome bonus features. People need to be incentivized and reminded of what they’re missing. That’s the answer, not a 200TB disc.

Your numbers are way off. Star Trek TNG was approx 7x23 =161 or less than 160 episodes + seven years of Deep Space Nine, Voyageur, Enterprise + TOS equals about 640 sub 48 minute hours. Squeezed into a 4000 - 6000 hour disk. Think of adding all your favourite sitcoms when growing up and you may fill a disk.

I’ve seen this discussed before but don’t see how this applicable to physical media. It may be another way for people store their ripped content but I don’t see how it can be applied to physical media sales. What we need is high bit-rate streaming to replace physical media. But I understand why companies aren’t running to get that going.

It's A future. Not THE future. We're not going about this right because we're not trying to improve things for people anymore, we're just focusing on pure profit with no regard for customer happiness. It's wrong and I hope we reverse course someday.

The reasons to buy physical media are:
    1) you don't need a subscription.
    2) you don't need internet connectivity.
    3) you get the best, consistent image quality.
    4) you don't fear it being removed from online catalog.
    5) you better support the maker/artist with a traceable sale rather that a stream (ask the struggling Spotify streaming musician)!
    6) Oh, and you potentially keep the original edit which might later be censored or 'changed' (think French Connection, ET or Star Wars).
