    I like this series. I've been cutting way, way back on Kickstarters myself. These days unless I can try the game out on Tabletop Simulator (or I already have played an earlier version), I am very unlikely to back it. After that, I think to myself, "If I picked this up in a store would I buy it on the spot without reading a bunch of reviews?" The answer is almost always "no." That said, I disagree with you on a few points.
    The biggest issue I have is with point 4. The main draw of the Arcs campaign for me was that it's only 3 games long (or even 2 games). That's a level of commitment that I can actually get on board with and see finishing. You could even do it in one session. I don't think that your characterization of the Arcs campaign as something that you'll never get to really holds here. This isn't Oath. I've played a bunch of games of Oath and really liked it, but that game asks you to play it almost every session in order to get what it has to offer and I'm not really prepared to do that. Arcs campaign is a considerably smaller ask.
    For point 3, I agree that Arcs is not going to appeal to someone just because they like playing Bridge and Hearts, but I think you're being a little too dismissive of how important it feels in the play. When I did my playthrough, my group was using all of our standard trick-taking skills to remember what cards have been played. It was pretty important to remember what suits are left and likely to be led and what the highest cards in each suit are. You don't have perfect information, but if you have the 4 of production, you're definitely keeping an eye out for the 5 to see when you can count on taking/maintaining the lead with it.
    Point 1 is actually why I'm not backing. I was waffling back and forth, but during our TTS playthrough, my buddy who would almost certainly be in any group I play it with said that he already backed it and that was enough for me to know that I didn't need to. Sometimes I struggle with the idea of owning something just to own it, and while I had pretty much decided not to back already, hearing your point 1 really cemented it for me.

      I think that idea of "If I picked this up in a store would I buy it on the spot" is a super important comparison. Thanks for sharing your experiences :) As I think more about the trick taking implications of the game, I was really hesitant to bring that up as a point, because I definitely see all the parallels. But I inevitably left it in because I can't see my parents taking to this one, even though they are trick taking fiends, it's probably their favourite type of game.
      The campaign criticism is very valid. I think I had 8 games in my head when I made this but can't find what led me down that path. 3 games is significantly easier to get to the table, although depending if you only get together once a week, perhaps this could still be less incorporatable than the ordinary. I still think the point of "try the game and see if it's something you want to play that frequently" holds, but thanks for bringing up the point about the length :)

    I want more of this series. Not to just be contrarian but A LOT of the popular channels can't get enough of recommending so many KS games. It's tiring content wise. I would love to hear one about Vindication from you.

    • @moltenbullet
      @moltenbullet 2 роки тому

      Vindication will be a tough one. I'd say the all in is definitely just luxury. The base game? Utterly worth it. My groups found it to be among the best productions and game play we've had in the last few years. And my collection has about 150-200 games, so I guess it's a bit telling from the groups that cycle through my collection?

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому +4

      I've only played Vindication once with a friend, but it was recently. And I agree found some of the deluxe components like the added minis to be utterly useless. There was zero point in terms of how you manoeuvre around the board. It was also a lot lot lighter than I expected from the size of the box and the art style. Which might be a selling point, might not. The hex board and how you move your character around it and get to do actions depending on where you are, it's weird but it gave me vibes of something a step up from Catan (I referenced it in my "What's next after Catan" video because of this), just to give you a sense of the weight and ease of play. And I think that's why people are able to be drawn in.
      The main loop of is move your character up to two spaces and perform an action that you're touching. These actions are usually "get resources" or "spend these resources on a special thing with a special power that also gives you points". It doesn't quite have full "pick up and deliver" vibes, because there are so many places you can get stuff from, but if that sounds potentially enjoyable I''d look into it further. I think the price is a bit high for me, because I often want - the more than I pay for a game, the more complex I am expecting it to be.
      I did enjoy the way you spend resources, and you can combine two primary colour resources into harder to obtain secondary colour resources that let you purchase cooler things, but the player aids are dumb because they lean all in on theme, when I just want them to tell me what colour is used for what. I don't care I'm spending "wisdom" because the theme really doesn't matter. Just tell me I'm spending yellow here! But that's also a learning curve that fades fairly quickly.
      I'm happy I played it, and I quite enjoyed it, but for the price there are other efficiency puzzles that I would likely buy before hand that have a little bit more to them, maybe scythe would be a good example of one of those.

      @@RoomandBoardReviews That is funny because I played Scythe once - and the game as a whole did not merge together and click for me. I felt like I was playing 2 games: one which was an efficiency puzzle of getting your units onto the board/map - and the other game of what to do on the board - which is the part of the game which I felt was lacking. I felt like there was no game there - the game even disincentives you away from combat - yet, if you have a boatload of resources, then it is likely that they will challenge you for all of them. I guess I just didn't "get" the game...
      And it wasn't that I disliked the game - but it was more that the board/map portion of the game stunted it for me - because I wasn't as intrigued by it.

    Something I think you massively missed regarding the campaign is that Arcs was made FOR the campaign. The base game is for newer audiences who would be put off by a singularly, massive campaign game, and is for learning Arcs. The campaign isn’t an add-on, it’s supposed to be the real opus of the game. Take that into consideration if you’re going to back it wanting it’s full potential to play with. Also the campaign is only 3 game sessions, not 8.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah a few people corrected me with the 8 vs 3, I'm not sure what my brain was thinking/read. What bothers me about it being made FOR the campaign, is that it feels like if that's the mode, why have a base game to begin with? If that's the optimal way to play, and it certainly feels like it is judging by everyone here saying that the game will be significantly less interesting without it, why offer that other subpar option, just to have a somewhat okay base game floating around? I feel like the base should be equally as great, and it seems like so many people are saying that it won't be.

      @@RoomandBoardReviews the idea they outlined in the dev diaries was that since so many board games are going big box high price with high rules overhead, and since they were aware fans of their previous games would be fine but newer audiences would be put off by an expensive single box with lots of rules, they decided on the product split so that some who were less invested in their studio could pick up the cheaper single box, playing the single session game with the low rules overhead to develop an understanding and casual enjoyment of it. The idea was that if it wasn’t for them, it’s better than them spending $150 on a game they didn’t enjoy to instead have just got the single session, but if they do enjoy it they could THEN decide to get the campaign, which is of much greater depth of quality but has significantly more rules. The game was originally designed as a campaign though, so it’s important to remember that obviously the campaign then would likely be more fleshed out at this stage than the single session.

      @@RoomandBoardReviews More money from charging for extra boards which will make them profit and more appeal because they have varying modes that will appeal to more people. ARCS has been really focused on making leder games as much money as possible even if it doesn't make sense for the game. They made up multiple excuses about why they couldn't possibly make screen printed meeples that were insane until the community bought one of the excuses and started viciously defending leder. The company is going down a shady path and need a wakeup call, people need to make their kickstarters fail so they will get off their high horse and add value to the kickstarter or just stop trying to overly milk people for money and just put it out to retail.

    • @thomgizziz
      @thomgizziz Рік тому +1

      I dont like how they run their company. They are misrepresenting their product to get more money out of people. They are literally lying to people and splitting things apart to get more money (and make more waste in the process). Cole said that it would cost half again the price of the board game to use screen printed meeples which either means they have the most expensive producer of their game that they could possibly get or that they are full of crap. It is leading to full of crap because there are games with more components and more screen printed meeples than their project for less. They also split the game when throwing in the extra components would have been more cost effective overall. They are literally using fomo to get more money and to get you to buy a game that will be cheaper when it comes out, they are able to charge the distributors half the price of msrp and still make a good profit but their kickstarter has to push the prices ever higher charge you for shipping and still not give you any benefits... yeah sounds like a great company that really cares about you and has good business practices (for themselves and not for you)
      Also that excuse about screen printing was the final one of multiple ones that they threw out there first and didnt fly with the backers, they finally found an excuse that people didnt push back against so hard, again a great company.

    I disagree about the campaign. I think the game was designed for the campaign first. The base game feels like it’s hand or two shorter than it should be.
    Campaign is only 3 sessions. Basically a 3-5 hour 4x game split into less draining games.

    • @thomgizziz
      @thomgizziz Рік тому

      Yep and they split it instead of just printing double sided for what reason again? Oh yes so they make more money! The same reason they are so against screen printing their meeples (they tried to make up reasons about why it was impossible from it costing 35 dollars (their cost) just for printing then a few others and finally landed on the "it wont work with the game" that finally stuck ignoring the fact that there are screen printed games with more meeples that are double sided from smaller publishers that cost less than their base game and includes more, not just meeples that are screen printed but, everything else too. They are going down a bad road.

    The way I look at board games is I ask myself the following questions. 1) Do I like the theme? 2) Does the gameplay look compelling? 3) What playercounts will work best with the game and will I table it often or not because of it? If the theme is good and/or the gameplay is good, then a game might be worth it, if you can't table it often, but will table it every now and then it comes down to cost. If you can table it as often as you like (due to solo), the cost can be higher. Let's say a game scores 5/5 due to theme, 5/5 due to playability (will see play whenever) and is a 3/5 due to price. Then you just look at your already existing collection and the collection of your friends and if this game fills that itch, that niche, go for it. To often or not after asking yourself these questions a game just won't be for you or you won't need that expansion or you don't need that deluxification. Do this for everything. Even when dating. Just don't ask yourself the question at what playercount your date will work.

    Yeah unfortunately will be passing on this one, even though the game does look good, there's just no reason for me to back it now. I already have too many games not being played, so getting it a few months early means nothing to me. I can respect their direction of anti-FOMO by not making exclusives, but that also means I will probably never buy it lol. If I can always buy it later, well there's so many kickstarter games I have to get now because exclusives, that my boardgame money is always being tied up. And for retail games, I have a list I'm trying to slowly fit in buying that are already on BGG top 100. So anyway, that's my situation. Thanks for the video, love this series.

There is a lot of feeling and no thinking going on and leder games is attempting to take full advantage of it by removing anything that would cut into their profit and splitting things up to make more profit when they could be saving shipping and materials with double sided printing which they actively avoid dressing on the kickstarter even when people bring up the enviroment (as per usual the enviroment is a huge deal unless it cuts into profit)

      The company banks on the gullibility of their supporters and fomo. They made up a few reasons why they couldnt slikscreen their meeples and where called out over and over again until they landed on an excuse that stuck for enough of the fanbois that they took that and started shouting everybody down that questioned the waffling and excuses. They sell the game to retailers at half the price of kickstarter and still make money but they could never possibly give you anymore for backing the kickstarter even though you will be able to get the exact same game with the same components at retail at prices that will be at or less than kickstarter prices and with no shipping cost. They also tend to never have a finished game and seem to want the money upfront and to design the game after so you never what you are going to get and instead just have to blindly trust that you will like all the changes they make. It is a terrible idea to support this company through kickstarter and it is just using and abusing its fans through hype to get a loan without having to go to a bank.

  • @moltenbullet
    @moltenbullet 2 роки тому

    My hesitation is that every leder game (except for fort which happens to be their lightest game) has just been too AP, with annoying slippery mechanics, and tends to over stay their welcome on the table. It seems like a bad design habit with leder.
    E.g., I'd tell someone with 5 games, sure keep root in that 5 game collection. But for anyone with a sizeable collection to rotate? Nah - play it for a little while all at once then sell it, or play someone else's copy. But the game is too troublesome and variable to pick it up again after some time or with rotating group (and to me that's what a collection should be made of - games you can look through like a delightful menu, pick out something, and not spend too much time or effort before digging right in to the meaty bits). The fun to effort ratio hasn't been quite right with leder.

      Interesting point. I haven't played Vast and heard it wasn't the greatest (a friend of mine picked up a copy and came to that conclusion before we tried it). I do think Fort is a ton of fun. I'm hopeful this one will keep the pace up with the relatively simple rules - I find with Root it's so hard with new players because there's so so much to assimilate. And if you play a new faction every time, you have that learning curve all over again.

      @@RoomandBoardReviews absolutely, yep. To me, a collection (something larger than say, 15 - 20 games) should be made of games your guests can look through like a delightful but well thought out menu, pick out something that strikes their fancy, and then not have to spend too much time or effort before digging right in to the meaty bits. Vast, Root, and Oath seem to not do very well in this regard (though the art always catches newbie and experienced gamers alike).

      Maybe I am a "little" selfish about that, I have root (all expansions), oath, fort and ahoy (the last two are ver light) and for me leder's games are the only games that give me the sensation that they will stay in the "collection" and will be not selled in 2 months after I buy it , and I do not buy too much games because my friends do not buy games, only I buy then in some sense I decide what to play ( I ask but like I say I have 4 of leder games, villainous and 2 party games). And personally when are people that not want to play the big ones I put one party game on the table, no problem. But sincerely my friend are happy to not have too much choice (if I have like 25 games we are capable to play only with 4 in rotation) then in the end it depends on what you want from a game and what your group want.. root and oath are maked for people that continually play them, is a characteristic, like some video games (dark souls an example) you cant' play it once a week, is a good experience but if you want to relax is terrible, the same for root, you can't play it once every 2 months if you don't want to forget it

    🤔 im not backing for many things: 1) the game is exclusively like 3+ players.. i mainly play solo or at most.. like 2-3 players but rarely. so getting this game wont be tabled as much so it wont be a good cost for the amount of plays. 2) the game is trick taking.. if i want to play spades or something ... id play spades not a board game that adds spades to play as part of the board game. 3) the way the campaign works is like if you need the same people to play the campaign based on how arcs is made.

    • @oerthling
      @oerthling 2 роки тому +1

      The game is not trick taking. The game uses a mechanic inspired by trick taking to manage its actions.
      Inis or Blood Rage are not simply draft - they use draft variants to distribute actions. But there's more to them then just the draft. Just like there's more to Arcs than just trick taking.
      True trick taking games just score the tricks you take.

    • @oerthling
      @oerthling 2 роки тому +1

      The campaign is not like campaigns for a dungeon crawler or in Oath. Here the campaign is exactly 3 games (like 3 chapters). You can play all 3 together - as if you'd play Eclipse or Twilight Imperium with a couple of intermissions thrown in.
      It provides more convenient and better defined breaks than other epic games, so playing the campaign on 2 or 3 days is relatively easy. But you don't need a dedicated player group as in Gloomhaven or similar.

    Number 4 - at least from now the small arc variant is mediocre, the campaign mode turns it into a good or even excellent game. I'm speaking from my experience playing the TTS version. It might change with updates, but for now, the small arcs are nothing to write home about.

    Reason #1 is a great point. I found out that Kickstarter has a feature where you can add friends from Facebook, to see what they back. Half the time, it's me seeing my old roommate backing a game and telling her I'll be by when it arrives lol. Definitely saved me from backing a few games over the years. With Arcs, I'm currently in for a $1, because I genuinely do want to follow along with the updates, but it really is not a game I need to back fully at the time.

      Especially for the components in this one. There isn't much in the box and comparable games tend to be 25-50% less. Not to mention that they split off the 2 games when they could have just printed a double side board which would allow them to put both games in one box and cut costs both in production and in the game and save on shipping and save the environment, which everybody seems to crow about unless not doing it allows them to make more money by making more stuff and selling to you at a profit.
