    Nice Fly, I like how you give us options if we do not have certain materials to create these flies.
    Thanks KEEP it Tying

      You got it Pablo. I just got off the river today, and will say that substituting a synthetic for the body on this is not a bad idea. The mink did not float as well as I thought it would. It looked good, and I got one fish with it, but it either needs a lighter body, or more hackle to really keep it floating.

    If any of your viewers fish the West Branch of the Penobscot in Maine, this fly would work extremely well in the upper part of the river near sunset.
    I’ve never used mink underfur before, just the guard hairs for tailing. It makes a really good looking body when used as dubbing. Gotta love hi-vis flies.
    Thanks for posting.

      I actually used two flies that had mink in them yesterday. This one, and one called a Fluttering Caddis. The latter uses mink tail fibers for the wing. It wasn't a great day on the river, but I was overall pleased with how these flies fished. I'm sure some folks watching this are familiar with the Penobscot, so thanks for the comment!

    Nice fly. I thought the monochromatic look would be boring, but it's quite classy looking. Hope the fish think so, too!

      Thanks Debora! And I agree, it's not quite as boring as it sounds. There's another fly called a Scarlet Ibis that is very similar, but all red. Maybe I'll try that one soon. too. :-)

      Yeah, it is pretty cool. And Michael from West Virginia sent me a patch of bear and some horsehair that I just got tonight. And I'm going to be practicing dying some materials soon so I should be able to offer that up to some folks too. Yeah, this is pretty fun.

    This is the most underrated fishing flies in Ireland, great for night fishing and nobody uses it much. Sea trout, which are brown trout that go out to sea feeding because the river they are resident hasn't enough feed. Especially peaty rivers or spate river's. As for limestone river's there's so much feeding that the brown trout doesn't need to migrate out to sea. After it rains during the summer and the water levels rise, we get a lot of rain in Ireland. The seatrout enter the river's and at dusk till dark the white moth is a cracking wet fly.... just subscribed 👍

      Outstanding comment my friend! I would absolutely LOVE to get out there and try my had at some of these sea run brown trout. Ireland, Scotland... the whole UK, plus some of the Nordic countries are all on my bucket list. I've just got to retire from my day job here first. Thanks again for the comment and welcome to the channel!

      @@SavageFlies we've a lot of pristine waters, and there's no angling pressure either. The more off the beaten track the better. Similar to yourself I'll visit North America some time and travel north of New York, at the moment work dictates my plans too.

      That's an excellent tip Richard; thanks! On the first one I did I actually forgot to tie in the wings altogether until after the body and then had to tie them in tips facing back. Making it harder to post them upright, and overall a pretty ugly fly. :-)

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 роки тому

      Alan, yes! It's in the plans. Jay emailed and noted that his pattern was in our last TU newsletter so I'm definitely going to practice that this winter and make a video for it. Well before the spring. Do you know when they'll be active? Is it roughly May, or does it vary somewhat each time?

    • @alantrico
      @alantrico 3 роки тому

      @@SavageFlies IT probably varies a bit but basically the month of June. PPTU is reserving a large camping space for the first week of June in western MD that will give easy access to both the Savage and the North Branch. Jay seemed to thing that would be optimal.

    Gosh, this a really good fly. I have old man vision issues. Thank you. Good video, love this series of flies. Note: I tie more flies in the no.12 size than any other size. Curious I found this page on GSM trout flies. Is it okay to share in this comment? www.flyfishingsmokymountains.com/hatch.html
    If not let me know and I will refrain.
    Thanks for the video: I ordered a pair of clip-on flip down 2.5 diopter magnification so I can tie easier.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 роки тому

      James- absolutely! Share anything you'd like on here that might help other tiers. And that's a great link so I appreciate it. And BTW, I tie a lot of size 12s because they are easier to show on camera, but I probably fish more 14-16s, particularly in dry flies around here. And funny you mention the clip-on magnifying glasses. I keep about six pairs of them! I keep them with all my fly tying gear, in a couple of fishing vests, and an extra emergency pair in my truck. If I ever forgot them when fishing, I'd probably be fishing big streamers that day. :-)

    • @FlyTyer1948
      @FlyTyer1948 3 роки тому +1

      James. I found magnifying glasses gave me problems when I looked away from the fly to pick up material or a tool at the side of my tying table. Another tyer at my club had a Giraffe magnifier & suggested I check it out. It mounts on your your table not your head, so there is no problem with changing focus when you look up or to the side. I got mine a long time ago but think they are still being made. Since it’s mounted, you can’t lose it like I lose my glasses.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 роки тому

      @@FlyTyer1948 -I hear you. I use magnifying glasses that clip on my regular glasses. I end up looking over the top of them when I need to see something not magnified. I'll have to check out the Giraffe magnifier too.

    That’s a decent tie. However, have you ever wondered is a Moth pattern shouldn’t have lay back wings???

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 роки тому

      You know, I really have. You'd think a moth pattern might have splayed out wings like a spinner, or even a down wing like some caddis flies. So would this fly really look like a moth? I don't know; I kind of doubt it. But I guess it's possible.

    Is mink one of the more expensive materials to come by?

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Sarge! Mink isn't typically too expensive (maybe slightly more than rabbit), but it's just not carried by as many suppliers. I guess far more patterns call for good ole bunnies. :-)
