Later on in the manga, Hendy becomes a support character who can barely handle himself in a fight, but he wasn't scaled down. That is just how powerful the commandments and true demons are. And Meliodas was meant to become king.
I mean that's not significant mistake of animator, but you can tell yourself that he simply switched the hand in which he held the sword. That doesn't make sense but whatever
