What a year! 1) The While Album 2) Music from Big Pink 3) Odessey and Oracle 4) Beggar's Banquet 5) Child is Father to the Man Of those first 3 so so close. Yes, The Beatles are not really a group by this time, but so many great songs. Big Pink is such a wonderful song cycle, and the aura around it. Odessey is just so entrancing. "Time of the Season" is about my sixth or 7th favorite on the album. Also "Bookends" "Sweetheart", " Village Green " "Lady Soul", " Astral Weeks", "White Light", " Dock of the Bay"...
1. The Beatles 2. Beggar's Banquet - The Rolling Stones 3. Astral Weeks - Van Morrison 4. Odyssey and Oracle - The Zombies 5. Bookends - Simon and Garfunkel Other albums in my top 500: We're only in it for the money (The Mothers of Invention), Electric Ladyland, A Saucerful of Secrets, In search of the lost chord (Moody Blues), Eli and the thirteenth confession (Laura Nyro), Shine on Brightly (Procol Harum).
I was 17 in 1968, the year I graduated high school. Tempting as it is to look back with the eyes of age (and supposedly wisdom) to take a more cultivated perspective, I'm going to make friends with my younger self and list the five albums that meant the most to me back then. 1. Eli and the Thirteenth Confession - Laura Nyro 2. We're Only in It for the Money - The Mothers of Invention 3. Song to a Seagull - Joni Mitchell 4 Blood, Sweat & Tears - Blood, Sweat & Tears 5. My 20 Favorites: 1. Beggars Banquet-The Rolling Stones Not sure I agree with Kramzer here. I usually do. By my count, The Stones have 8 GREAT albums: Between the Buttons, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out (Yes, I know it's a live album), Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Some Girls and Tattoo You (regardless of when the songs were written-the incredible Side 2 alone is worth a shout out) and a bunch of very good ones. 2. The Beatles ("The White Album") - The Beatles 3. Music From Big Pink - The Band 4. Astral Weeks-Van Morrison 5. Sweetheart of the Rodeo-The Byrds 6. Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix Experience 7. @@TastesLikeMusic Guess it's tough to cover everything but you do say you have covered everything in the video but you forgot this one. Interesting The Byrds don't show up on anybody's list apart from Sweetheart (which is really a Gram Parsons album) for Albums of The 1960s ! But credit to you Joe for having Mr Tambourine Man on your songs of the year list (as well as Hickory Wind) and shame on Kram and Jason. Mr Tambourine Man must be one of the most seminal songs ever recorded. That Rickenbacker intro must have sounded like the future in April 1965. And Jason, The Beatles certainly thought so as its influence is all over Rubber Soul and their future output. The Byrds are not regarded as a great albums band. It seems The Stones, The Beach Boys and The Beatles always get top billing in the 60s but I would consider The Byrds among that group. Notorious is a GREAT album and their others are very good.

Thanks! I know it was wildly under-appreciated in its time. I think it’s gotten a reappraisal in recent years. But I’m not sure people really know how good and unique it is. - JS

Begin by The Millennium is a fantastic psychedelic pop album. Great melodies and harmonies so well worth a listen to any Beach boys or Zombies fans. At the time it was the most expensive album ever recorded, and it shows!
Great year and tough to pick a winner. I was tempted to drop the white album off the top of the pile solely down to obla di obla da because I really hate that song but the rest of it is too good 1. the white album 2. Electric lady land 3. Oddessey, White album, Astral Weeks, Village Green, Notorious Byrd, Traffic’s second album, Beggars, Big Pink. The White album is objectively the best but all are equally great in my books. Oddessey is probably the best pop/psych album ever. Astral Weeks sounds like it was made on another planet. Oddessey and Weeks are in my top 10. VG is the Kinks best and Beggars is the Stones best. Traffic ‘68, White and Village Green are my top 20 of all time. Beggars and Big Pink in top 30. Kramz, once you watch Coming Home you’d get the impact of Beggars Banquet. What a great year
I am enjoying these posts thanks . 1968 was a killer year but it has to be Astral Weeks for me , I just listen to it all the time . After that the White Album thanks guys
My top 5 5. Beggars Banquet (The Rolling Stones) 4. Waiting For The Sun (The Doors) 3. Wheels Of Fire (Cream) 2. Electric Ladyland (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) 1. White Album (The Beatles)
Beggars Banquet is my favourite Stones album, just edging out Sticky Fingers. Possibly because it was one of the first albums I ever owned as a young teen, but it also seemed to encapsulate the era of the British 1960s I’d missed out on (too young). Astral Weeks is surely one of the greatest albums ever. You can’t argue too much about the White Album though…

Oh my word, makin my way thru the history of rock with the fellas. Started with '65 and gonna watch all the AOTY shows in one sitting. Just kidding. But had to pause to say i am super happy that Jason acknowledged my All-Time Favorite Album by my All-Time Favorite Artist, ASTRAL WEEKS by VM. A bit surprised it didn't show up for Joe or Kramzer, but all the picks are awesome. Thanks! 🔥🎶🙏

Nice to see Odyssey & Oracle from Joe. It's worth checking out Colin Bluntstone's solo work from the seventies if you haven't heard it. Not earth -shattering but always listenable.

A difficult year for me to assess, reflecting on 1968 generates no great love for the admittedly crucial albums released then (and there are key works like 'S.F. Sorrow' by the Pretty Things that I have yet to experience). I feel more enthusiasm for 1967 and 1969. But I would like to contribute to this topic, so here are my choices, listed alphabetically by title: --'The Beatles' by the Beatles (a classic and pioneering exercise in experimental rock, with several beloved songs like "Blackbird") --'Beggars Banquet' by the Rolling Stones (opening track "Sympathy for the Devil" remains one of the band's signature numbers) --'Cheap Thrills' by Big Brother and the Holding Company (classic powerhouse vocals by the great Janis Joplin, always soulful and heartelt, and with "Summertime" an especial standout track) --'Electric Ladyland' by the Jimi Hendrix Experience (essential work from Hendrix, the single most influential guitarist in rock history, with "Voodoo Chile" an outstanding track) --'Odessey and Oracle' by the Zombies (most important release by this group, with "Time of the Season" an enduring Sixties classic)
5. Wheels of Fire - Cream 4. Waiting for the Sun - The Doors 3. Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix Experience 2. Beggars Banquet - The Rolling Stones 1. The Beatles
In order of preference : The Beatles : The Beatles Rolling Stones : Beggar's Banquet Deep Purple : Shades of Deep Purple Cream : Wheels of Fire Jimi Hendrix : Electric Ladyland
Thank heavens someone finally chose a Byrds album! I agree on the Zombies album too. Incredible album. My pic fir number one would be Beggers Banquet or Electric Ladyland.
5. "Odessey and Oracle" The Zombies 4. "We're Only in it for the Money" The Mothers of Invention 3. "Saucerful of Secrets" Pink Floyd 2. "Astral Weeks" Van Morrison 1. "The White Album" Beatles
5. The Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Electric Ladyland" 4. The Kinks: "The Village Green Preservation Society" 3. Joni Mitchell: "Song To A Seagull" 2. The Beatles: "The Beatles" (White Album) 1. THE ROLLING STONES: "BEGGARS BANQUET"
Sometimes a record is is not just an album for me but a companion. I have my favourite over 50 years now and I surely did not understand much of it when I first heard it maybe I do not even understand it today. It takes me on a different journey every time I listen and the lyrics inspire associations and memories that may have nothing to do with what he actually sings about. "Timeless" is often misused but true in this case. The funny fact is that I originally bought it by error because all I knew about the artist back then were the singles he had recorded with Them and I had heard on the radio. "If I ventured in the slipstream between the viaducts of your dream..." 1. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks 2. Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland 3. The Band - Music From Big Pink 4. Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet 5. Mothers of Invention - We're Only in it for the Money Since musical evolution does not follow the calendar, my feeling always was the 68 was the end of the sixties. Much of the music that came out in 69 already was 70s music (foreshadowing that the 70s ended in 77).
I don't know how many people are really paying attention, but if you look closely at our video thumbnails you'll see nods to some of the albums we had to leave off of our lists. Zappa being one of them.
@@TastesLikeMusic Now I see, it is the alternative (American?) cover which was the inner foldout picture of the LP. The cover I had was the Stgt Pepper's persiflage. They swapped the inner and outer pictures in some countries for whatever reasons...
Thank you Joe for mentioning Beggars Banquet, that would have been #2 behind the White Album.Kramer, maybe try putting Salt of the Earth or Stray Cat Blues on at a healthy volume and perhaps reconsider,
It's lucky this is like the 10th video of yours I've watched now, and I'm hooked, because my finger did hover over the unsubscribe button with all that crazy talk about the Stones back catalogue, and Beggars at the end. Absolute masterpiece and second only to the White album. I'll put it (along with incorrect baseball cap wearing) down to youthful naivety :-) thanks guys and keep up the good work.
1) The White Album - The Beatles 5 (a few songs I wish were cut) 2) Bookends - Simon and Garfunkel 4.5 3) Odessey & Oracle - The Zombies 4 4) Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix Experience 4 5) Beggars Banquet - The Rolling Stones 4 6) A Saucerful Of Secrets - Pink Floyd 4 (this one grows on me over time) 7) Lady Soul - Aretha Franklin 4 8) The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society - The Kinks 4 9) Aerial Ballet - Harry Nilsson 3.5 (listened thanks to Jason) 10) Music From Big Pink - The Band 3.5.
1. The Kinks - Village Green Preservation Society 2. The Beatles - White Album 3. The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet 4. Sly & The Family Stone - Life 5. The Band - Music From Big Pink
1. Electic Ladyland 2. Beggar's Banquet 3. White Album 4. The Dock Of The Bay 5. Truth 6. Ogden's Gone Nut Flake 7. S.F. Sorrow 8. Oddesey & Oracle 9. Dance To The Music 10. C.C.R.
Purple's debut "Shades of Deep Purple" was really interesting. The sound was influenced by bands like the american outfit Vanilla Fudge. Hush was the standout track (with an outstanding organ solo by Jon Lord.) Blackmore and Lord were already experienced musicians by this point and even Ian Paice (who was only about 19/20) had already learned his craft on the circuit. The album cover was hilarious (with the band members sporting huge bouffants and frilly shirts).
1968: (Year Average 8.7) 1. The White Album - The Beatles (10) 2. Beggars Banquet - The Rolling Stones (8.5) 3. Waiting For The Sun - The Doors (8.5) 4. Aerial Ballet - Harry Nilsson (8.5) 5. Music From Big Pink - The Band (8)
-Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison -Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland -The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet -The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle -The Doors - Waiting on the Sun AOTY: The Beatles - White Album 🏆
1968 has some of my favorite all time debuts (Soft Machine, Caravan, Nazz), the top 5 only include one debut. they are: 1. Tape from California - Phil Ochs (anyone with Odyssey and Oracle on their list should check this one out) 2. Saucerful of Secrets - Pink Floyd (not popular with Floyd fans, but it's my favorite studio album by them) 3. Beggar's Banquet - Rolling Stones (it's my go-to Stones record) 4. The Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan (last time Donovan will make my top 5, but this one can't be denied) 5. The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles, and Fripp - this is a rare gem from 1968. it's pop, experimental, and it's witty. and it sets the stage for Fripp's more famous debut with another band. most people have never heard this (tbf it's not easy to get a hold of it), but I highly recommend it to anyone who likes KC tracks like "I Talk to the Wind" or "Cat Food"
The first true year of the 'classic rock' era, a year after the "Summer of Love". Actually, this list is more folky! 1. Astral Weeks - Van Morrison 2. Beggars Banquet - Rolling Stones 3. Wheels of Fire - Cream 4. Tons of Sobs - Free 5. This Was - Jethro Tull 6. Song for a Seagull - Joni Mitchell 7. Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix 8. Bookends - Simon and Garfunkel 9. In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly
Respect the trifecta but very disappointed that S.F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things (one of my favourite bands) didn't get at least an honourable mention. If you haven't heard it make it the next you listen to. Its a tough year so get it didn't make the cut but a mention is definitely deserved.
My favourite was The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (Any plans for a Kinks listography?) Also excellent albums: Beggars Banquet, The Notorious Byrd Brothers and White Album
Kinks and Village Green were released on the same day. They are my two favorites. Main difference? The White Album probably sold more copies on the first day that Village Green sold in total - a complete commercial flop.
The Small Faces "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" is definitely in my top 5 along with "Wheels of Fire" by Cream. No love for those 2 great albums by you guys. It is hard to go past the "White Album" at No.1 though. It's my favourite Beatles album after all. I also really enjoy "Vincebus Eruptum" by Blue Cheer and "Cheap Thrills" by Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company. One more mention to William Shatner's "Transformed Man". Not in my top 10 but a great experiment in music, theatre and art.
Could never get into small faces for some reason. Wheels of Fire is my favorite Cream album, but it was left on the cutting room floor. It might have been number 6 or 7 that year. - JS
Still a bit early for me...not difficult at all... 1. The Beatles - The Beatles 2. White Light/White Heat - The Velvet Underground 3. Waiting for the Sun - The Doors 4. Saucerful of Secrets - Pink Floyd 5. Last Time Around - Buffalo Springfield 6. Wheels of Fire - Cream 7. Beggars Banquet - The Rolling Stones 8. Electric Ladyland - The Jimi Hendrix Experience 9. Blood, Sweat & Tears - Child Is Father to the Man Directory of 525+ albums from 1968 (semi-annotated): rateyourmusic.com/list/Zaragon/1968-yeah-man-its-great
The Rolling Stones Beggar's Banquet would be in my Top 5. I think it is stronger than Let It Bleed. It is maybe their best collection of songs, although if you are interested in their more rocky sounds, it may not go down quite so well. Laura Nyro's Eli And The Thirteenth Confession is up there, too. It is an incredible album - maybe my No1 from 68. I'm surprised you guys never mentioned it. That album is definitely worth a listen.
10. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis 9. Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention - We're Only in It for the Money 8. Dr. John - Gris-Gris 7. Soft Machine - Volume 1 6. Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes 5. Scott Walker - Scott 3 4. Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends 3. The Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album) 2. The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat 1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
My top 5 5. The Band Music From Big Pink 4. Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland 3. The Kinks The Village Green Preservatioon Society 2. The Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet 1. The Beatles The Beatles (aka The Wjitef Album)
Ah 68...an important year to me for one album in particular that will always win due to its creative and taste influence on me ....my other pics will be obvious.... 4 Electric Ladyland...Hendrix... .awarded most listened to album on my list 2 White Album Beatles 3 Wheels of fire Cream 5 The Bonniwell Music Machine (or The Music Machine).....ok their first album was fab but this one has great stuff too... 1 The United States Of America by The USofA....still to me the most important psychedelic album in music history....and beautiful Bit of a blip year for me..... on the grounds for albums really studied by me...so no special mentions...the famous ones mentioned I've somehow avoided listening to properly.....alot if the artists I have best ofs... .oh well🤔
I love how Kramzer always includes Revolution #9 as a GREAT SONG! I LOVE it too, but I don't really call it a song, more like a piece of "Avant Garde Art" John and Yoko thing?
Great comment - and you *gotta* love how Kramzer said it in flow with no hesitation and the guys didn't mention it or react... especially since that is one aspect of TWA that is both criticized / debated so often
1. The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet. 2. The Beatles - White Album. 3. The Kinks - Village Green Society. 4. The Moody Blues - In Search of the Lost Chord. 5. The Doors - Waiting for the Sun. Beggars and the White Album are clearly the best 2 for me. Beggars has no weak tracks and a couple of all- time great songs like Sympathy and Street Fighting Man. Hendrix just missed my list.
Hey guys, another great video. I found the albums of 1968 much weaker than 1967, I'm not a Beatles fan so the obvious White Album wouldn't be in my 5 for the year. None of you mention the debut album of Creedence Clearwater Revival, which I think might be my album of the year - is there no love for that one? It's worth a mention if only for their cover of Suzie Q.
I don’t think there’s much love for CCR In this channel. I like them, but they had so many albums in such a short time it’s hard for me to really latch on to any of them. Willy and the Poor Boys and Cosmo’s Factory were in my top 10s for 69 and 70. If you combined Willy and the Poor Boys and Green River it would have a case for a top 3. - Joe
Yeah....one of those classic bands that I just never really understood people's fascination with. (of which there are many) I don't necessarily dislike them but nothing about their songs or recordings excites me really. 🤷🏻♂️ -Jason

What a year!
1) The While Album
2) Music from Big Pink
3) Odessey and Oracle
4) Beggar's Banquet
5) Child is Father to the Man Of those first 3 so so close. Yes, The Beatles are not really a group by this time, but so many great songs. Also "Bookends" "Sweetheart", " Village Green " "Lady Soul", " Astral Weeks", "White Light", " Dock of the Bay"...

Not sure I agree with Kramzer here.

Stunned that Sweetheart of the rodeo gets a mention but not the Notorious Byrd brothers. My favourite Byrds album
I’m sorry. - Joe

You guys knocked it out of the park again. Props to Joe for placing Odessey and Oracle in the #1 slot

I absolutely adore that album. 5 stars!
Great year and tough to pick a winner. I was tempted to drop the white album off the top of the pile solely down to obla di obla da because I really hate that song but the rest of it is too good

4. Waiting For The Sun (The Doors)
3. Wheels Of Fire (Cream)
2. Electric Ladyland (The Jimi Hendrix Experience)
5- Iron Butterfly --- In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

But had to pause to say i am super happy that Jason acknowledged my All-Time Favorite Album by my All-Time Favorite Artist, ASTRAL WEEKS by VM. A difficult year for me to assess, reflecting on 1968 generates no great love for the admittedly crucial albums released then (and there are key works like 'S.F. Sorrow' by the Pretty Things that I have yet to experience). I feel more enthusiasm for 1967 and 1969. But I would like to contribute to this topic, so here are my choices, listed alphabetically by title:
--'The Beatles' by the Beatles (a classic and pioneering exercise in experimental rock, with several beloved songs like "Blackbird")
--'Beggars Banquet' by the Rolling Stones (opening track "Sympathy for the Devil" remains one of the band's signature numbers)
--'Cheap Thrills' by Big Brother and the Holding Company (classic powerhouse vocals by the great Janis Joplin, always soulful and heartelt, and with "Summertime" an especial standout track)
--'Electric Ladyland' by the Jimi Hendrix Experience (essential work from Hendrix, the single most influential guitarist in rock history, with "Voodoo Chile" an outstanding track)
--'Odessey and Oracle' by the Zombies (most important release by this group, with "Time of the Season" an enduring Sixties classic)
5. Wheels of Fire - Cream
4. Waiting for the Sun - The Doors
3. Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix Experience
2. Beggars Banquet - The Rolling Stones
1. The Beatles
In order of preference :
The Beatles : The Beatles
Rolling Stones : Beggar's Banquet
Deep Purple : Shades of Deep Purple
Cream : Wheels of Fire
Jimi Hendrix : Electric Ladyland
Thank heavens someone finally chose a Byrds album! I agree on the Zombies album too. Incredible album. My pic fir number one would be Beggers Banquet or Electric Ladyland.

"If I ventured in the slipstream between the viaducts of your dream..."
1. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
2. Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
3. The Band - Music From Big Pink
4. Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet
5. Mothers of Invention - We're Only in it for the Money
Since musical evolution does not follow the calendar, my feeling always was the 68 was the end of the sixties. Much of the music that came out in 69 already was 70s music (foreshadowing that the 70s ended in 77).
Astral Weeks is phenomenal. I was very surprised that I was the only one to have it in my top 5. - Jason
That Zappa album is worth a mention for sure
I don't know how many people are really paying attention, but if you look closely at our video thumbnails you'll see nods to some of the albums we had to leave off of our lists. Zappa being one of them.
@@TastesLikeMusic Now I see, it is the alternative (American?) cover which was the inner foldout picture of the LP. The cover I had was the Stgt Pepper's persiflage. They swapped the inner and outer pictures in some countries for whatever reasons...
Great list Roxanne. Astral Weeks and Music From the Big Pink are some of the greatest albums not just of 68, but of all time.

1968 has some of my favorite all time debuts (Soft Machine, Caravan, Nazz), the top 5 only include one debut. they are:
1. Tape from California - Phil Ochs (anyone with Odyssey and Oracle on their list should check this one out)
2. Saucerful of Secrets - Pink Floyd (not popular with Floyd fans, but it's my favorite studio album by them)
3. Beggar's Banquet - Rolling Stones (it's my go-to Stones record)
4. The Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan (last time Donovan will make my top 5, but this one can't be denied)
I’ll check out Phil Ochs. - Joe

9. Cheap Thrills - Big Brother and Holding Co.
10. In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly
Well here are 4 great 1968 albums everyone misses out: Taj Mahal. Steve Miller Band - Sailor. The Insect Trust. Dr. John - Gris Gris.
My favourite was The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (Any plans for a Kinks listography?)
Also excellent albums: Beggars Banquet, The Notorious Byrd Brothers and White Album
The Kinks are on a very large list of bands that we want to get to. We’ll get there eventually.
Not in my top 10 but a great experiment in music, theatre and art.
carncats07 some good albums for sure. No matter what we do, we’re always going to be leaving some great albums off of our lists. 5 just isn’t enough.
Could never get into small faces for some reason. Wheels of Fire is my favorite Cream album, but it was left on the cutting room floor. It might have been number 6 or 7 that year. - JS

It would definitely be in my top 10 at this point. Those early shows of ours were a little rough. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic I don't know. I have enjoyed them all. It is good, though, to get three opinions.
Aerial Ballet !! Yay for Harry, I agree
The Doors Waiting For The Sun 🌞
Astral Weeks is the best album of 68. Has an argument for best album of all time. More of a beautiful album than even Pet Sounds.
Word booty. 🎶🙏

Ah 68...an important year to me for one album in particular that will always win due to its creative and taste influence on me ....my other pics will be obvious....
4 Electric Ladyland...Hendrix... .awarded most listened to album on my list
2 White Album Beatles
3 Wheels of fire Cream
5 The Bonniwell Music Machine (or The Music Machine).....ok their first album was fab but this one has great stuff too...
1 The United States Of America by The USofA....still to me the most important psychedelic album in music history....and beautiful
Bit of a blip year for me..... on the grounds for albums really studied by me...so no special mentions...the famous ones mentioned I've somehow avoided listening to properly.....alot if the artists I have best ofs... .oh well🤔
I love how Kramzer always includes Revolution #9 as a GREAT SONG!
The Beatles - The White Album
Jethro Tull - This Was
Otis Redding - The Immortal Otis Redding
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Jeff Beck - Truth
Give Me Take You by Duncan Browne, Those that know, know.
🤷🏻♂️ -Jason
