I love this channel. Tech and Rogue always have that really “practical” approach to builds. You can still ball out on your rig, but run at lower settings to maximize your fps. It isn’t all about benchmarks and ultra graphics.

i was gaming with a 3700x and a 3060. switched to a 6900xt and was getting 160 fps in warzone. then upgraded to a 5900x and now get 220-240 solid. 1440p as well. the 3700x was absolutely holding it back. and the frames were jumping up and down way too much with the 3700x and its pretty damn stable now.

For gaming at that level, 8-Cores is Optimal, before small IPC gains will matter more. Gamers in 2019 would of spent $700-800 on a 3950x and within 15 months a $280 11600k matches in gaming as the extra 6-8 cores mostly sit idle
Depending what you currently have, a used 10850k is nice, good value, or a used 11700k unpopular but therefore great value, and can perform better for Less in games and General computing. Anything beyond is gonna Jump in Cost for a single percentage difference, outside workload

I know the video is old but I have to day it for anyone watching.
Taking the median fps is not a good move because you can have a spike in fps and suddenly, the median also moves up. Also, medians do not mean that 50% of data is high or lower, it just means that the middle of the provided range is the median e.g. low is 30 and high is 90 and so 60 is the median but your average is 42 which means that more often than not, you'll have 42 fps which likely means over half the fps is below the median

What is the best upgrade cpu for a 2700x on 470X board, 32 ram, rtx2060, 1080p 165 hz 32" wide screen, all ssd / nvme drives? Play majority games with little multitasking or things like video editing. Or should I just go for a GPU upgrade. Not playing super high end AAA games that much anymore. Play mostly multi-player games like Rust, POE, Valheim, destiny 2...etc and single player like GTA, doom, dying light, fallout series etc. Or should I just keep current setup with no change and put my money someplace else like networking and home server? Budget would be 800 to 900 for both cpu and gpu. Could flex a bit more if price vs performance worth the value.

imho when it comes to gaming, our monitor specs and games we play should define the word "bottleneck" for cpu and gpu pairing. 4k 60hz vs 1440p 144hz, AAA vs esport titles.

Now my cards varies from 6800xt to 3080 FHR and 3090, depending on my mood as I mine on the side. Having said that because I have an MSI B450I build, the 5600x was perfect for me, but had I gotten a better motherboard then I would obviously upgrade to 5800x or even 5900x to fully utilize my gaming and multitasking experience.

I usually build a new system every 5 years, so it's time. I currently run an i7 6700k with a 1080Ti. Not wanting to finance a full- blown Alder Lake system, I'm considering an i7 12700k/DDR4 system and using my EVGA 1080Ti Black. Run a variable refresh rate 27" 1440p monitor w/Gysnc. Play mostly racing Sims and Fallout 4. Will retain my Thermaltake Core X9 case and drives. Will get a new AIO cpu cooler and possibly a new power supply (current PS is an EVGA 1000P2). Should I trust my current PS (never had any issues) that has 5 years of remaining warranty or get a new one? Will the 1080Ti run OK with Alder Lake? Will upgrade the GPU when the market settles. Thanks

Agreed if you are going Alder Lake go DDR5. Your 1080ti will be fine, but I would probably look at the Newegg Shuffle or buying when new cards launch as you will be somewhat disappointed with the other upgrades. The market has stabilized we are going to be paying $1200-2000 for a decent GPU for the foreseeable future.

so i have a weird predicament.

    Ryzen 3700x
MSI Ventus 3x OC RTX 3080 (traded my asus strix 1080ti SLI cards for it)
    16Gb Corsair vengeance 3600Mhz
    Asus Prime x570-pro
and i just upgraded to a 850W gold corsair PSU from a 700W bronze PSU to try to fix this issue.
similar to the original question. but my FPS varies wildly between different games and can even change from power cycle to power cycle BUT the GPU usage stays low in the majority of the games. CPU usage stays low as well, rarely ever goes over 50%. RS:siege gets amazing FPS (280-350fps) BUT most of my other games get poor FPS for the setup. Fortnite gets 120(max)-150(high)FPS, PUBG gets 90-120fps, Mordhau gets 115fps average, Ready or not gets 90average, and its a similar story for many other games as well. Siege is basically the only one that gets decent FPS
I have a few things im going to change and add on to see if it fixes it until i can afford to get a High Hz 1440p monitor or a 5950x, but i at least want higher FPS in 1080p to enjoy my high Hz 1080p monitor loll. Im really just wondering if theres ANYTHING i can do to get better usage from the 3080 to at least push a bit more FPS in 1080p without dumping some money yet. With both the CPU and GPU usage so low, i just cant see how its chugging along at 90-120fps in 1080p games so often. (can be pretty stuttery too, not sure what lows look like though)
    any advice would be appreciated...

But this is demonstrated to be false at this point for 'just' gaming. The variance at 4K is 0 with most games between Zen+ to Zen 3!!! The increase in frame rate is less than marginal. At 1440p the difference between Zen 2 and Zen 3 is 7% to 12% with a few outliers. Lower latency memory can make some of that back on Ryzen. I don't see the point in buying Zen 3 for that level of improvement. With the changes on the way with 5nm, DDR5 and Zen 3 having 0 upgrade path. What's the point of wasting the money during a chip shortage. Generally you wait a generation before updating your CPU and in this case it would be sensible to avoid paying out on a new motherboard, memory and cooler twice, because the CPU sockets are changing. At 1080p competitive there would be a point but at 4K and even 1440p more often than not your still GPU limited not CPU limited more often than not.

@@dartuno well if it dips below $300 there really isn't a better upgrade for the money. With exception to a 5900x at $300. But as far as I know it isn't at that price.

For anyone looking in 2023 and looking to keep their AM4s
    5800x3d is your answer
I went from sub 300 fps in cs2 to sometimes hitting as high as 550 fps
    Enjoy!

I would really love to know what hardware I need to buy (as low a budget as possible that will hold for the next 3-4 years) to play 1440p CSGO (LOW GRAPHIC SETTINGS) on a 240 hz or even 280 hz monitor without any FPS issues WHAT SO EVER. It needs to be running +300 fps at all times... Anyone got an idea what I need?
I am an old serious CS gamer and atm. playing on 4690k with 1333hz ram and gtx960, pushing 1080p with 144hz and +160 fps but the game keeps freezing for 0,5 seconds every 20 seconds or when ever I encounter an enemy, like a short lagg, it's really killing my performance.

Very eye opening video. Have a very similar system to the person asking the question (32GB ram, 3800x, 3090) and have been debating wether I should go for a new Ryzen 9. It runs well and I should probably leave it alone but knowing I can drop it into my B550 board is very tempting. Gonna see how my current system handles Forza Horizon 5 or Halo Infinite and then make a decision.
