It will definitely result in job cuts. There are still a ton of call centers in the US. AI is going to jump the IVR systems ahead enormously within just a few years and eliminate the need for much of the remaining staff. I imagine a lot of job loss in India and Mexico because of it. Tons of content creators like artists, authors, etc will be impacted. Several large software firms have announced freezing on new developers as they work on using AI to replace people.
People often talk about AI being just a tool and making people more efficient so they can do new work, but modern lives are already reaching the saturation point in things we can consume and new economic opportunities are not showing up for the people who are losing work opportunities.
As with many new software developments there are hundreds of competitors now, but that is going to shrink to handful in less than 10 years and the owners of those platforms will have enormous power over all levels of society.

And this is the result of the chip blockade. Underestimating Chinese talent is a mistake, because when you force someone to work with limited resources due to trade barriers or technological blockades, what you’re actually doing is pushing the affected nation to innovate under constraints. The Chinese made a very simple calculation: if they block our computing power, we need to innovate to achieve the same results using more cost-effective methods and less computing capacity.
On the other hand, what Trump said is absolutely true-competition is fundamental for innovation. Technological races have always driven leaps in techniques and capabilities, enabling the development of new and disruptive solutions.

Creating an artificial moat to avoid competition for US companies will NEVER give them the incentive to stay at the top.

Yep. The goal isn’t some number-cruncher. DeepSeek might be a step forward, but it is a single step in a long race. And we tend to have a very wicked acceleration once we’re motivated to get going. Honestly I think we needed this “scare.” Americans as a whole have gotten way too complacent in their false sense of security as the premier world power and it’s about time we actually started acting like a super power again instead of just assuming everyone’s going to let us keep the title.
So game on, China. Let’s see if you can beat the USSR’s score. >:)

@@KVUAA in 1998 when my cell phone dropped calls it wasn’t a scam. In 10 years time when AI is as smart as a human no one will look back and say scam. This is evolving technology. The trajectory is up.
