Andriy Vasylenko if u look at the making of The Day That Never Comes, the first solo that kirk played for the solo is different than the one in the song.
Motorbreath was definately better in the demo...
Shadow of the Cross was definitely turned upside down, it's hard to tell that what we hear there on All Nightmare Long is that riff, because of the low E machine gun fire.
Andriy Vasylenko Chi over SOTB all the way.
the before riff of spit out the bone kinda sounds like death metal? maybe? great videos btw
Jason's full solo is so beautiful. One of the greatest pieces I've ever heard on bass.
I thought you would talk about those "live edits" that Metallica does to old riffs
Me three
Me four
me not
Me five
@@jamesmustaine6669 me yes
You should do a kirk hammett strongest and weakest solo from each album.
This actually would be pretty cool
Yes! This comment needs more attention.
Yes
The weakest would comprise many ones from Hardwired :)))
@@Cthulhu_Awaken St. Anger ;)
my friend of misery solo is one of the greatest composition of Jason ever done... (it's only my opinion)
imagine if my friend of misery was became an instrumental according of Jason's plan and become classic too like the call of ktulu, orion or to live is to die
I completely agree
Yeah, I love the intro but I always really disliked the vocal part and recently discovered that it was supposed to be an instrumental.
That live solo is one of the most amazing pieces I've heard played on bass
Then there wouldn't be a My frrrrrrrrrriend of Misery.
It´s a Classic though, altough is aswell very underrated
I like how Kirk basically wrote the riffs for two of Metallica's best known songs _(Sandman_ and _Puppets)_
Plus the Die part from Creeping Death
AyeEssBee Yeah, Kirk wrote the iconic riffs but James' riffs are better in my opinion. Especially the ones from And Justice For All, Frayed Ends Of Sanity has my favourite Metallica riff.
There’s a whole video of mine full of Kirk’s riffs. You’ll easily spot it among recent videos) Just in case you want more
I don´t know how people let this pass when they had the info right there but Kirk had More colaboration in the first four album he had credits than the four Cliff have credit´s for Kirk having 17 from Lightning to the Black Album (not counting KEA for obvious reasons) and Cliff having 11 From KEA to Justice, even though if you count to the point were Cliff was alive and colaborating more that leave three albums and still Hammett going with 13 Colaborations in his first three albums than Cliff with 10, Plus the must beloved Metallica album been MoP Kirk has 5 and Cliff just 3. Of course is not a thing of numbers, Bob Rock has 11 colaborations and all of them in St Anger lol
Several more including the riff during the verse of Trapped Under Ice, which he had since '82 in Exodus.
Can you imagine being at that battle of the bands and years later hearing one of the greatest metal anthems ever written and being like . . . they came in fourth?
This made me appreciate how good Death Magnetic is when you take the songs out of sequence and listen to them on their own merit. Always knew it was good, but I think I need to reevaluate where it stands on my favorite albums list now.
Fantastic comeback album
If this album was released 30 years ago, it would be part of the original 4 and would be a classic. Sooo many good songs.
Fucking love that album, defo top 4
Jason: *shows jamehs the blackened riff
James: cool, we’ll use it
Lars: *WHAT ABOUT ON GUITAR*
Kirk: nghuuugh can I wite a riff for this so-
Lars: *WITHOUT BASS*
I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I loved My Friend of Misery and The God That Failed. Very underrated songs on the Black Album.
Why in minority? Many people love these songs
If I ever pop in that album these days I skip straight to those
Those are great songs def not in the minority.
Misery is heavy and very melodic at the same time, always what Metallica has tried to embody.
God that failed has so much meaning, the lyrics and riffs are very heavy
LMFAO........ how are you a minority
do you have ANY FUCKING IDEA how many people worship my friend of misery, the god that failed .. Orion and so on
Mate, , maybe you believe you are a minority.
i'm from the old days. ok.. I'm 45
these songs were songs that we lived by .... TRUST ME... YOU ARE NOT A MINORITY, Not even fucking close
maybe if you said you loved Mama said, then maybe yeah hehe
i don't know of any songs on any album black and prior to black that you could like and be considered a minority for liking it
Literally every single song is awesome
only difference is some are more awesome than others
but.. the god that failed... was a very impacting song with a very important message
you can't go past that one .
@@martinkuliza I think Mama Said is a pretty good song.
Okay but why did they lose the title “Black Squirrel”
I love Kirk's original chorus for MOP.
Same
Yeah , sounds more badass
Birk Ganze youve Got a point -but i dont Think the vocals are the problem. More that there Will be way too Much going on.
Back when he had ideas, skill and passion. Guys like an old car that barely starts now. Ffs what happened to him. He was so good then just went to shit while the rest got better and better like mustaine and marty

This will always be my favorite video. I still can’t believe you went from enjoying making videos from this to now what’s happening in your country.
Stay safe brother and much love to Ukraine people 🇺🇦
I think the change from that "Gymbag" shit to "The Judas Kiss" is the biggest improvement they've ever made so far
Agreed
I actually like the Gymbag riff more...
@@7-cheese333 oof
Everything about Gymbag was improved when they changed it into The Judas KIss.
Idk man, setting Enter Sandman to the proper groove was a pretty big deal.
Before!: shows a video from 1993
After!: shows a video from 1991
Me: WHAT
It's so sad that Jason didn't get to record the solo for the album, but then again, that way we wouldn't have My Friend of Misery...
They should've found a way to use the whole riff. In the interlude, for example, just like Jason and Kirk played on Cunning Stunts
@@AndriyVasylenko I agree. That was the best time he played that solo.
So dark and ominous, especially in eb tuning. Would love a full version of that if there were a possibility
@@AndriyVasylenko Would be nice, yes, but given Jason's position in the band, that would never happen anyway since James and Lars were basically the final word.
We wouldn't have My Friend of Misery, a good song, but we would have something much better. It's a damn shame they didn't listen.
probably bob rock thought that was unneeded and everyone agreed
“The story so far” is an amazing song title. Shoulda kept it.
Yeah, I agree, but then the lyrics must have been changed.
meh. James is capable of it.
@@nolanbeasinger8555 I have no doubts in that.
And it sounds better.
Nolan Beasinger Pretty good band name too, someone should use it.
Mama Said though... Imagine if they stuck with that instead of the acoustic. Wow.
Mama Said is just fine as it is
I.... like the acousic
I'm just saying imagine lmao not picking sides on either one
They should've
"Gymbag" sounds like a hair metal band.
The riff in All Nightmare Long is a personal favorite. That dropped D strumming pattern is so fun to play.
They slowed down the riff to 'Sad But True' from the demos, because it initially sounded too 'happy'. The revised version that made the album is so much better because of it, especially the groove factor.
they tuned it down* bob rock said he thought it would sound heavier than e standard
They did that as well, but if you listen the demo you can hear it's a lot quicker in pace. James noted in the Classic Albums documentary how he was having to rush his vocals in order to keep up with it.
I had this one in mind, but then dropped for a reason I forgot
And then they slowed “you know it’s sad but true” part playing it live and ruined groove of the song. Sadly.
Da real Jacksfilms.
Rob's improvisation at 1:00 sounds a lot like Megadeth's "Dawn Patrol" from Rust in Peace album
DMusic96 rust in peace album*
Thank you for the correction, dunno what got into me
Yeah, they sound similar
Megadeth ft Marylin Manson you mean? 😂
Some Kind of Master I agree with you, it's more similar to The God That Failed than it is to Dawn Patrol
I still think the best moment for me from Metallica was Jason's guitar doodle into Nothing Else Matters at the Cunning stunts concert
Watch the Seattle 89 concert. Jason’s bass solo when James and Kirk join him and they go into Puppets.
I, a 34-year old who once upon a time owned Cunning Stunts on VHS, just realized what happens when you switch the letters around in the title. Such a Metallica thing to do.
All of riffs seems better to me because I am used to final versions
Listen to Flamingo, the real demo of all nightmare long
Same with me.
You look like jason when you tie up ur hair and you look like cliff when you open your hair
And he looks like Rob when wearing sleeveless shirts
Edit: thanks for those likes!
(Lol only 4)
Edit 2: the word "LOL" is dumb?
-imnotaposser - yeah (no jaymz intended)
@@blitzkrieg-9570 😂😂😂
Thrashed Dude With his hair back he looks like Chuck Schuldiner.
Barbuta Helmet i did not notice that he looks like the gods of Metal damn brother \,,/
Just a small piece of info, Jim Martin from Faith No More is playing with Cliff and the Agents Of Misfortune.
Definitely a small world
Great video once again! Low mans lyric definitely improved in my opinion!
Thanks! Totally agree on Low Man Lyrics
@@AndriyVasylenko there are some amazing melodie's on the mind eyes demo that didn't make the album version. So i listen to the demo alot. It has a outlaw torn vibe to it.
Kirk hammett playing the embryonic master of puppets riff 😂🤣
This video just reminded me how good the riffs were on Death Magnetic, it's too bad the album didn't have Hardwired's level of production because the songs from that album are really fucking cool. Also that riff in Judas Kiss is so fucking 1980s Metallica, it's just so good.
Quite a lot of the ones from the making of Hardwired sound better or worse than the album. Spit out the Bone's verse sounds badass
Auto tune fkucde up the tunes?
@@gjermundification maybe
35 years rocking and still doing it?
That deserves just a little autotune
Is not just that. Time passed and James' voice had changed a lot. He doesn't get the tones that he used to, and, even being his fault, is something that none can blame him for. The man have made history, so he can use a little help in this stage of his career.
Guys, I begin to think that the “before” verse from Spit could be an extra section (somewhere in the middle) that they dropped. The song initially was longer, according to Lars.
James Hetfield still has an awesome voice even when compared to the early days. probably one of the best vocalists of all time.
imo they were all improved, apart from my friend of misery, and i would've loved to hear rob's acoustic riff in all nightmare long
Thankyou andriv vasylenko I love your vids
;-)
@@AndriyVasylenko your the best and remember be metal ha lol
Damn, the My Friend Of Misery part is so beautiful! I think Cliff and Jason could have done great things together if they had met...
Andriy, you just changed the way i play Master of Puppets by showing me Kirk's version of the chorus. I love it.
It's amazing how good those Presidio demos sound especially when you keep in mind that stuff from that period also became St. Anger...
That shadows on a cross sounded like it would've been sick
3:00... i guess 1984 was before 2008
0:54 the main riff for All Nightmare Long is pretty kickass though I think we can all agree
The Judas kiss chorus is one of the best riffs of all time.
That entire album is one of the best metallica riff collections ever.
Underrated album if for nothing else than having great riffs in every song.
0:32 this riff is basically Pantera's I'm Broken with a different drum pattern behind lmao
Awesome vid. Some were better first, most after, but awesome to hear it. That was cool.
yo why cliff gotta do his old band like that
That was awesome! I'm going to listen again a couple times but I think I already know which I prefer. Thanks for the video and it being awesome and interactive.
Maaannn.. always loved that Shadows of the Cross riff 🤘🏻🤘🏻
On a lot of these I find myself not being able to pick which one is better. Both are fine in their own right and show the creative influences that were manifesting in the band at the time of recording. To me it’s more so interesting listening to the subtle (or not so subtle) changes that go on between when they are demoed and when they appear on albums. Another great vid Andriy
My thoughts:
All Nighmare Long: Both are pretty good but AFTER is better
All Nightmare Long: AFTER
Master Of Puppets: BEFORE Sounds much better
Motorbreath: AFTER
The Judas Kiss: Both are actually really good
Enter Sandman: AFTER
Mama Said: AFTER
Low Man's Lyric: AFTER
Ride The Lightning: AFTER
Broken, Beat & Scarred: AFTER
Spit Out The Bone: I actually like the BEFORE verse more
For Whom The Bell Tolls: AFTER
My Friend Of Misery: BEFORE
I agree with that master of puppets one. The before riff sounds much more neoclassical and satisfying to me
Spit out of the bone sounds much better before coz its riff was more complete
For me, the BEFORE verse of Spit wasn’t matching the song so well. As a separate piece of thrash metal music, it is indeed great.
I like mama said before... I don't know. just listen to the whole demo. It feels right
Totally agree with Master and and Spit, bro!
The change from “Chi” to “Spit Out The Bone” was truly the best decision made by Metallica!
robs improvisation is the best metallica riff, lol
This is a perfect channel for metallica fans, just wanted to put that out there
Death magnetic is so fucking good. Every time I hear it I groove so much
One of your best videos.....love it
1:19 no lo sabías , kirk , pero acababas de crear uno de los mayores riffs de la historia
What an awesome video, man!!
Great Video man, from the bottom of my heart I Thank You my good sir!!!
Good video, man. Didn't have a clue that most of these existed
I wish I could roll my Rs like that when I say friend.
That Presidio riff sounds AWESOME!!!
Shadow on the cross could have been their next sandman.
That was really cool!! Thanks for putting it together for us!
Boi! And justice for all... remaster was announced. And also Seattle 89 CD!
Carrotdrink !!!!!!!!!!!
Really? thats great man
Seattle CD?
Remix?
That would be awesone! I had a friend's copy the audio from that Seattle show onto a CD for me years ago. Would be great to have an official version.
4:34 wow that sounds a lot darker and different it sounds cool.
Most of the "after"s are improvements. And For Whom the Bell Tolls the after is unbelievably better. Definitely my favorite Metallica song.
Love these comparisons! Good job!
1:19 straight up Black Sabbath type of riff... basicaly all these riffs are just Black Sabbath riffs just played faster...
kinda true, but its a chorus riff and its less agressive and thrashy, main riffs are different from heavy metal sabbath
If you slow down most metal riffs will all sound like Sabbath.
On that Spit Out The Bone clip I was hearing that as being remade into the middle part, rather than the verse.
"Stop breathing, and dedicate to me"
2:23 that kinda sounds like the end of blood eagle wings by anthrax
0:34 Demo much better
1:50 Sounds grreat to me
2:12 Demo wayyy more badass
3:28 I prefer the demo
4:11 Way heavier and better
5:34 Well full live version is better...
Every video you’re getting better and better. Keep it on, brother \m/
Dmitriy Stanislavov Thank you! \m/
This is fucking fascinating !!! Great vid riff bruh 👍
absolutely AGREE on first 5, these riffs are killer, very groovy!
Yeah, the only time when "before" was better than "after" is with Dave Mustaine. :D
4:25 This one always breaks my heart. If my friend of misery was kept as just a bass track (like anesthesia) and the weeping guitar parts, it would be one of the best songs in black album
Robs improvisations sounds a bit like Dawn Patrol, or has same kinda vibes
HardRockRock12345 I heard it as well
One of my favorite memories in music is when my buddy and I played Shadow of the Cross. Him on guitar, me on drums and since then we’ve always kinda joked about him being James and me being a much nicer Lars.
Why does the Jason's solo / My Frrriend of Misery sound so sad?
Because it's about misery. :(
Because minor key+slow tempo=sad
Thats funny
Should it sound happy?
Think of the abuse Jason was going through in Metallica during that time, the band were trying to get to terms with Burtons death and in doing so treated Jason like crap.
When I here that song it reminds me of Cliff dying and a new page turning for the band.
So much beautiful and legendary music here
A friend of mine: - You can't have heavy riff without tunning your guitar down....
Me: - For Whom The Bell Tools, mate....
You are the best man where do you get such amazing inside information !!!! Keep up the good work
demo to final recording is apples and oranges
Exactly
Excellent vid. Well done.
Before: 2008
After: 1984
Checks out
Whom the bell tolls will always be a legendary song from Metallica and will be regarded as one of they’re best songs
Roberts improvisation at 0:59 is totally Dawn Patrol by Megadeth.
Tell me I'm wrong! Do it!
You are wrong
@@benjaminm8749 That's right bitch. You do what I tell you to do.
They have about the same tempo but that's it.
It sounds more like The God That Failed, but nothing like Dawn Patrol
Rob´s improvisation sounds way more like Flamenco music wich is were it came from but to eah his own i guess
Those two San Diego shows were insane. We were moshing in and out of the entire lower bowl.
you forgot karmacamelion and am I savage breakdown. Few changes were made, but they still sound the same to me.
Wow ... thanks for posting ... fun stuff.
По мне так ,самая неоднозначная ситуация с Shadow Of The Cross.Ибо оригинальный рифф очень грувовый,в то же время версия All Nightmare Long прям очень трэшевая.
А я думаю что Путин все таки зря начал повышать пенсионный возраст
@@Delacru Полностью согласен
На концертах они стали играть потом его более приближенном к оригиналу, но в том же темпе.
Great video, friend!
My friend of misery. Befor 1992, after 1991 ?? Wtf
It's just a date of video cmon
1975 🎶
Listening to death magnetic is like walking into a recycling center and seeing a bunch of old riffs that you threw aside and forget about
As much as lars get flacked for being a bad drummer (I think he's mediocre fyi) most of the songs showcases his talent in metallica and that is the song structure. Both kirk and cliff had created some great ideas for riffs, but there is too much fat imo and he strips that away to get the core riff. Although there are some songs that highlights his problem when creating a song structure.
Yeah Lars' ear for arranging tracks doesn't get enough credit.
James and lars arrange together, and come up with some very pleasing composition.
People are always curious what part of songs Lars writes, he's all about that song structure baby!
Hell, take their most famous song Enter Sandman, it was Lars' idea to do the main riff 3 times before playing the refrain instead of 1:1.
This demostraste that even professionals are constantly changing or developing thir own sound and style. I used to practice in a band and the other guitar player always want to play the riff exactly the same as it sounds in LP (studio album), with no mistakes or variations. That is exhausting. Nice documentary video, thanks for share it. 🤘🏽😎👌🏽👋🏽😉🇻🇪
Great video man
My friend of Misery: Before 1992 - After 1991.
Uhm.
It was written a while ago, Jason played full of it on 1992.
Yeah, back in 1991.5...good times, man.
Great video and info! Thanks!
I think it's always Lars who's asking James to do a newer version of any old songs he names
I liked all the Afters. I just think James Hetfield has a good ear. 🤘
The intro to The Story So Far should have been kept in Mama Said. It gives a more cursed sadness feel to the song, especially because of what it talks about.
