I was here twice in 80 and 83. The B-52D and EC-121 flew in while I was there. That B-52D is some sad looking now.... it's in the Valiant Air Command Museum Titusville FL as just the nose section. When I was at Chanute many aircraft were lined up on the flight line and several were static displays as individual aircraft around the base. I've been in several of the static displays over the spring of 83. Chanute is looking pretty rough as well. I was stationed at 3 bases that closed (Chanute, George and Eaker). All a bit rough around the edges now some 30 years later. They all have one thing in common.... they're bascially in the middle of nowhere. Not great billing for a museum.
Thankfully a lot of the rare aircraft that were on display at Chanute have found good homes at other museums or air force bases in the country such as the sole remaining Boeing XB-47 "Stratojet" going to Edwards Air Force base, I believe the Convair B-36 "Peacemaker" is now on display at the museum at March Air Force Base in California and the U.S. Navy, Lockheed EC-121"Warning Star" (Super Constellation) found a hangar-home at the Yankee Air Museum at Ypsilanti, MI. I believe the only remaining "aircraft" at Chanute is a Minute Man missile near one of the entrances.
I enjoyed the video. I was stationed at Chanute in 1974 where I was trained as an aircraft maintenance specialist 43431E and went on to work on the B52H Bombers in Grand Forks, ND.
I was stationed at Chanute AFB in early 71.. This song by George Harrison came out while I was there..Brings back many a memory...And boy was it cold 🥶... I almost froze..
i grew up in rantoul and have been in the musem a few times, so sad to see it gone now. amazing childhood memories, i still have some of the toy jets they sold there, wish i had the little foam runway parts still.
Chanute was closed in 1993 under the Base Realignment and Closure ( BRAC ) act. Now, sadly, the museum has been closed. I am a volunteer at Castle Air Museum in Atwater, California ( site of the former Castle AFB ), and we now have the B-58 seen in this video.
Boy this video brings back old memories.. I was at Chanute when the song by George Harrison came out as well, and then was assigned to Castle AFB in April-May of 1971.. Sad to see both bases in the conditions they r in.. Does anyone know what the Tanker phase docks (at Castle) are being used for these days ... That's where I started out and then was transferred to the flight line...
Once a SAC trained killer, always a SAC trained killer. Aircraft maintenance jet over two engines, 74 to 79. Loved it there. Moved on to Grissom, Malstrom, and finally Macdill.
I spent '72-'76 in Grissom Hall. I taught on the AGM-69A SRAM missile program. Thank you for this video. I have not seen that building since I left. Good times!.
I wonder what happened to all those historic airplanes after the air museum closed? Are they still there behind locked doors waiting just for someone else to volunteer and take over and run the air museum?
