- Marty Pasetta produced and directed the Aloha TV special which became the most watched TV program ever, with over 1.5 billion people watching it worldwide.
Being a creative guy myself, I often wondered who organized and created the 'Aloha From Hawaii' show, it was so ahead of its time and still to this day stands as a masterpiece showcasing one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived. Now I know who it was that put that masterpiece into place. Thank you for what you did for ELVIS and the entire recording industry, including television during its growth Marty Pasetta. You deserve an honorary mention in the Hall of Fame.
Elvis didn't have to move. Don't know how he could say Elvis was boring unless he wasn't feeling well. Every song or concert I have seen was so great. I just discovered Elvis and I cry listening to him. His voice and those eyes are so beautiful. No one I have ever listened to comes close to Elvis. A fan forever.
That's very correct, but when you are thé biggest star of the world, having someone being critically honest and upfront with you can be of great worth. And that apparently happened to be in this case.
You are a fan so you arent being objective because all you are worried about is yourself and your opinion. Pasetta was a DIRECTOR. DIRECTORS make movies or TV shows that they try to make appealing to MANY people some of whom may or may not be fans and its very possible that by late 1972, Elvis was getting bored of touring and his shows probably were getting boring to those that were not fans. This point of view is amost certainly true for many shows past 1974 where Elvis would sometimes come on stage under the influence of drugs and put on a really bad show. So yea, Pasetta was correct in his assessment and told Elvis that because he wanted to put on a good show.
@@johnclaba1457my thoughts exactly, when Marty went to see Elvis the first time, I assumed it was 1972, because Aloha was in January 1973, 1972 was a tough year for Elvis, he was in the middle of divorce, he probably was not in his best performance that night Marty got to see him.
Some fans put Elvis on a pedestal , I am obsessed with Elvis too. But I know he was only human, I accepted him when he messed up with drugs, or when he did not performed as great : " it's hard to live up to the image" Elvis had said that and it's true, ...
@@dessy844 You are the best type of Elvis fan.....a fan Elvis would have probably been happy about and proud to have. You appreciate his greatness, but you don't sugarcoat the times he was not great. People on here don't understand that when you are never critical of a person's failures, all it does is demean from that same person's successes.

@@E3ECO From what I've read, the Colonel couldn't travel out of the US. A Management firm offered to buy his contract but the Colonel wouldn't do it.

Yes Claudia,I totally agree that he was a very sick human being.With all the illnesses, he had to take a lot of medication for pain including pills for insomnia.. To be without sleep and in pain and you still have to perform, you are forced to use painkillers, and you have to sleep..I'm suffering from chronic insomnia, because of that there's other complications and I have to take medication for it.The dosage of the medication increases as time goes on because the pain becomes worse..I sort of understand him over medicating himself because I know what its like to have pain everyday of my life..He was and still is a SUPERSTAR .A PHENOMENON
He's legacy lives on always..May his offspring be blessed like he was in his short life..HE WAS BLESSED TO BLESS OTHERS..

I was never more excited in my whole life than I was watching Elvis in Concert, the anticipation and buildup to seeing the most electrifying and legendary star EVER really hit me!!!!!!!!!! I've never felt that kind of excitement in my life, he was so special and just seeing him and with all of the legend built around him, and then seeing a brand new concert...........I was bouncing off of the walls and ceiling, singing along and just experiencing "Nirvana"??!!!
His legend grew to other worldly epic proportions, thank God I experienced what THE ELVIS MAGIC is all about, and that is right up to the very end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe he saw Elvis in an off night because Elvis never just stood there.Elvis said that "you have to put a show on for people,give them something to talk about.If I just stood there and didn't move they would think they could have just stayed home and listened to my records.You got to give them their money's worth.

I saw Elvis in concert 4 times from 1955 until 1977, and he was the opposite of boring.
But you saw it through your eyes....The eyes of a fan that you never found him boring. Pasetta was trying to make the show appealing to non Elvis fans so they could tune in and the network could gather ratings.

The Aloha special is Elvis' masterpiece. He is magnificent from start to finish. I watch it all the time. I have the deluxe DVD set and it has both the rehearsal show and the live show. It's wonderful.
Yes, the Aloha Special is a masterpiece, it couldn't have been any better. It's also how so many people remember him, especially casual fans, he was at his absolute greatest that night. Well done, Elvis.
Except that his TTWII shows in 1970 were better as were the legendary concerts at MSG. Aloha wasnt his greatest concert by far. He actually was subdued .... .for an Elvis performance because of the time limitations on the show. They had rented the Intelsat feed for only 1 hour. If he would have ripped his pants or pulled a muscle, it would have been disastrous, because the satellite feed would not have waited for him. They paid for a 1 hour window...after that 1 hour, the feed went dark for NBC.

Have to agree. More than any other entertainer, Elvis was constantly moving on stage - couldn’t stay still. And how on earth could you not know you were at an Elvis concert????

There was no run way in Vegas till after Marty used one in Hawaii. So Elvis walked back and forth on the stage. It wasn’t as active as the runway made it. That’s what Marty meant by he was still. Elvis wasn’t as still after they got the
Runway. Marty’s idea was perfect. Elvis loved playing with his audience. So that was perfect.

He only performed in Anaheim, LA, Oakland, San Francisco, Long Beach, San Diego, San Bernardino.
He also performed In Fresno, Ca in 73'and 74' My grandmother and great aunt saw him perform there.

I'm a massive Elvis fan. After his awesome 50's performances he was terrific from 68 to 71 but in my view after that it was all downhill probably owing to the drugs having an increasing effect. His voice was very good in the 73 Aloha special but the performance wasn't a patch on his shows a few years before where he was mobile, loose and natural with the audiences. In the special he seemed rooted to the spot and really nervous. It's such a shame that a lot of the world only saw this performance and not the better performances of a few years before. Just my opinion but this show saddens me when I watch him

Even if we didn't knew it back then, Elvis Presley was sick during the show. He had an brain injury in 1967 and was sadly under a ticking alarm clock for his day to die. His sickness was gradually and he was in lots of pain, that made him just gyrating to songs like "Patch It Up" and "Suspicious Minds". Yes he moved around in concerts but with a body more and more rigid than the month before. And besides this if you are going to sing "What Now My Love", "An American Trilogy" and "You Gave Me A Mountain" and stay away from loss of breath you need to stand still. Even Morten Harket of A-ha have said that he had to choose between singing and dancing to do great shows, he chose to sing.
The artists that "stand still" do so for a reason, they might spice up things by doing speeches or showing skills or something like that. Elvis Presley was not boring standing still, but to make TV out of slow songs you need X number of cameras and a good backdrop.

More challenges like Aloha may have saved Elvis' life. He got clean for this show and lost weight and readied like a prize fighter. It was the boredom that ensued afterwards, that helped him fall into his terrible drug habit that destroyed his body and eventually killed him.

The King was NOT boring. Before his health declined, he was dynamic. How many entertainers have you seen do an entire Kempo kata on stage. He was awesome!
The only times I saw Elvis not moving all around the stage creating extreme excitement was my city, '76 and later that year in December, '76 Vegas. He was on his way down, so sadly. It actually shows in Hawaii if you followed Elvis like I did. He was grieving the loss of Priscilla and it came out in so many songs that night, and from then on until the end. He sang his life.

When Pasetta said Elvis was boring....he as a producer was talking from a point of reference of the casual fan or from a person that wasnt a fan. He wasnt talking about someone like you. So his assessment was correct as by 1972 Elvis was most likely getting bored of live concerts.
I am learning to be thankful for these first hand recollections of people's time with Elvis, especially since so many have passed away. It really got to me, hearing Elvis hug this man for being honest. If only....

Elvis was never boring. His music and singing alone was to exciting to be boring. The energy of his concerts and his energy still have never been matched. True Elvis was not the same gyrating performer but he was more of a older and mature performer. he wasn't performing for 16 year Olds anymore. I still say in the aloha from Hawaii concert at times he was all over the place and very excitable just more laid back and his voice was perfect.

Marty got emotional during this interview you can see tears well up in his eyes a few times , Steve Binder and Marty gave Elvis two of the best tv specials in his career I salute both of them !

Possibly not. Elvis died of TBI. That was unknown in the '70s, so he was untreated. He might have lived a little longer if he'd taken better care of himself, but it's doubtful he'd be alive today.

People in the comments are over reacting to Marty's comments about Elvis being boring. Marty is a creative visual TV director and he's thinking in terms of visual variety. A great concert is not necessarily a great TV show. It has to be staged creatively. He meant no disrespect to Elvis, he even said your music is magnificent. But it's Marty's job to think of the broadcast as a whole. He came up with a great approach and apparently Elvis was very pleased and the world has a great TV show of Elvis that can be enjoyed forever.

I believe Marty because he got emotional. This is a great story about the preliminaries of the show. I happened to know that Elvis kept the show quite conservative because he didn't want to offend any of the foreign country audiences. At this time, for some reason, Elvis didn't need to move. His persona was overwhelming. His voice was incredible. Physically, he looked great and he looked relaxed and confident.
The song selection offered some sexy moments -- "Steamroller Blues," and "Fever," was stunning. "I'll Remember You," was beautiful. "American Trilogy," was thrilling. One of the most memorable live shows I ever saw on television. Not many singers can command an audience the way he did.

You dont know what you are talking about. Elvis didnt keep the show conservative because he didnt want to offend anyone. That is total hogwash. Elvis didnt move because the show was being broadcast on a live satellite feed that cut off after 1 hour and if Elvis ripped his costume or pulled a muscle, he didnt have the time to go back stage and put another suit on or get treated. They had a 1 hour window to do the show and then the satellite feed would cut off and in turn the show would go dark for everyone outside that arena.

He got emotional after he told the part where Elvis came over & hugged him. And thanked him for being honest. Elvis needed more honestly from people like him. Not his insiders who he probably didn’t respect their creative input. The Colonel & others should have made him get healthy! They worked him like a slave & he paid the ultimate price for their GREED!

Exactly!!! ... I feel the same way about the producer and director of the 68 comeback special Steve Binder, it's as if the universe was speaking to Elvis about the potential if he changed managers but unfortunately this never happened.

Here’s the thing, this was after years of Vegas shows, where Elvis himself said he had a hard time connecting with the audience because all of the seats close to the stage were high rollers and celebrities, that’s why he started going out into the audience to find his fans. Also by that point he already had arthritis problems and a twisted colon so he really couldn’t move like he used to onstage, especially with additional weight on him. I believe what Marty is saying and I wish he had more people who were honest with him in life. And every interview I’ve seen with his friends or family, they say that as soon as he booked the show he stopped the pills and got in shape.
Just wish it would have lasted.
And the rest was history....
I think Marty and Steve Binder were the only two that were ever honest with Elvis. A shame that Parker blocked these people from approaching Elvis ever again. Parker never cared about Elvis only the quick buck he could make from him. Any other manager would've taken care of Elvis!

Thank God for people like Marty Pasetta and Steve Binder who were able to get past the multi layers of BS that surrounded Elvis, and managed to create something brilliant. Elvis's post-army career suffered so much from an artistic standpoint because of Tom Parker. I think I hate that Carny.
True. I was 9 years old in South Korea. I watched his live show, and his performance stuck in my head vividly thru black n white tiny TV set.
One of the best performances by anyone was when Elvis was sat on a chair in the 68 special, you don’t need to dance to entertain.
Mr Pasrtta had a brilliant idea with this concept Elvis as humble as he is agreed to lose the weight without getting mad he was probably shocked him when he went up to him Good for Elvis who is very creative also This will never happen again

All the stories I have ever heard is that Aloha from Hawaii was Colonels idea and he pitched it to Elvis and that Elvis wanted to do it
As a life long Elvis fan since 1974 when I was 6 I have an opinion on the aloha show! There is no doubt the show is regarded as the pinnacle of his career but i think this is because of the occasion, the gorgeous outfit, the tan, the colourful leis and Ofcourse the vocals! But in terms of a performance it is a far cry from Elvis at his best ie Vegas 1970 when he was at his very best!
