I got to see Petula during her USA tour and Betty Buckley on Broadway. I loved both of their interpretations of Norma. Petula is so petite in size but what a spitfire of energy with a fabulous voice.
I think Petula's singing and acting are good. Is she a classically trained singer like Patti, Betty, or Eliane... no, but she sings the score quite well for a pop singer... and her acting is good in these clips. Petula has acted in movies and other stage productions. I don't understand why people are so overly critical of her. Love Petula! ❤️
I saw Petula Ckark in this role...she really wasn't up to it vocally or dramatically. However, I remember she was great in the last ten minutes when Norma descends into madness.
One might debate about how Petula portrayed the character of Norma Desmond but nobody can debate Petula's fantastic singing in this musical... by far vocally and technically THE best. Perhaps when you saw her she was ill I don't know but for you to give her just credit for the last 10 seconds is quite wrong
@@jeffreyzeiss1326I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and say you have no competent vocal training. Any classically-trained singer would pick her technique apart
To reply to the original poster, you are absolutely correct. Her descent into madness with fantastic. Most noticeably the way she took on the high-pitched young innocent voice during her final speech, except for the last line of it. That was genius
I saw petula here in California and it still gives me the chills ! she portrays the angst so well, plays the delusional norma so well ! I had the pleasure of meeting her after the show and she truly is a very kind and amazing person ❤
Hey just saying Hi. I got a dvd coming of the Village Players production production. You have the audio. The guy who directed it is giving the proshot video. I'll send you itv when i Get it. 😛 Chris
Do you have any more footage from this production, specifically the Joe/Betty scenes? If so, would you be willing to share it with a member of the company? Would be great to see ourselves after so long!
I saw her in the redesigned and scaled down 2nd U.S. national tour and was overall not impressed with that production or Clark's portrayal of Norma Desmond. I just kept wondering what was it with her pronunciation. Sounded like she was trying to sound country or something. She had the voice but the characterization and the pronunciation was just bizarre. I saw her as Mrs. Johnstone in the U.S. national tour of Blood Brothers and she was excellent in that. Her performance in that role stayed with me and I remember it well after all these years.
Sorry, but Petula is terrible in this role. Her singing doesn’t seem that bad, but her acting is shocking and her characterisation is somewhat like a screaming fish-wife! It seemed like an amateur performance.

Worst one out of all original “mainstream” Normas.
The worst?! No, that honor goes to Rita Moreno! 🤣
@@flipspicksphilip4677 Rita Moreno had her issues, but at least she didn’t sound like a goat getting stabbed.
Too animated
