Ed filmed alot of MV's in the rough seas of norfolk in england back in december and january. The symbolism of this song which is being battered and shattered by the waves but still having the will to keep going and believing that things will eventually become alright is so inspiring. I do not care if this album does not sell that much i just hope that this tune and all the other tunes in subtract resonate with everyone. Everyone has some pain and grief in life and if you just hang in there you'll eventually come to the shore and appreciate the waves who have made you stronger and more determined xx

One part was shot in the water with waves covering him, and the other part was filmed in a studio against a green screen with him singing. Then they place his singing face on top of the shot of him in the water to create the final video.

Writing songs is one thing, being a true story teller where you can see it in your mind, feel the emotions, close your eyes, and feel it all is a whole different talent. Ed Sheeran is such a gifted storyteller and musician. It's so incredibly impressive to see him live, no band, just him captivating a sold-out open stadium audience who are all singing back to him. There's something so genuine and raw about Ed Sheeran's acoustic music that just hits differently. This reminds me of some of Ed's older songs like Sunburn, which I love. Its the type of song that isn't trying to conform to a typical song structure but instead is being more naturally lead by the unfolding melody, and isn't afraid to be stripped back. I love this side of Ed, and I think songs like these make him an untouchable artist.

I can't stop playing this on guitar! The different strum strengths and strum pattern switching from palm mutes for the bridge for quiet chords to slamming that Em verse is so fun, and it feels so good! It's an absolute beginner song, but advanced in how you need to play it...brilliant! Keep it up!!
About 7 hours ago I just experienced the most pain I’ve felt in a long time. I feel betrayed, guilty, and shattered. It feels as if waves are beating up against me. I’ve felt this pain all of my life, though, so the feeling is nothing new. I don’t think I’ll ever become dry, because the waves will keep bashing me and drenching me over and over, much like the music video. Suicide has been an option circulating around my head for years now. Even though the pain might be unbearable and never ending, I know that I must keep going and I can’t let these things kill me. I won’t let these waves break my boat. Instead, I will sail it against the current, bashing through the waves, until I find peace behind them. Thank you Ed for creating something that will remind me of that. These waves won’t break my boat.
