Charlie was a friend of mine. One of the nicest people I ever met. Said he liked me because I never treated him different. Never asked for an autograph. His wife was the word slinger and they worked well. I cried when he passed. He was down to earth... and yeah very country.
This was back in the days when what people did in their bedrooms and with whom was considered private. Man, I wish we could go back to those days.
Ain’t that the truth, now it’s spread all over “reality tv” and even your kids can watch it.
Well... It was only private if the government approved of it. This was only a few years after police in Virginia stopped harassing and arresting married interracial couples (married!) for what they did behind closed doors. And this is ten years before the Georgia case where police entered a private home where two consenting adult men were together in private and arrested them both. That case went all the way to the supreme court. And LOST, meaning law enforcement was allowed to stick their nose into what you thought was private.
I do agree with you that people share too much personal information about their private lives these days, and those of us who still keep that information private are considered the weird ones now.
A beautiful song. Great singer. R.I.P. Charlie Rich.
I had almost forgotten this song and how much I like it.
This song is not just about that, but about how faithful she is to him and how much he adores her. She doesn't flaunt it in public, she saves all her sexiness for her man.
Your faces brother! I get more entertainment from you than cable TV.
Keep it up!
Jamel_AKA_Jamal Charlie Rich is Great! So is a Charley Pride,. Kiss an Angel Good Morning! You seriously need to do Jackie Wilson,. Lonely Teardrops,. Danny Boy,. Workout,. All are on Video & you Have to see the video!!! It’s Awesome!!!
@@OverandOutChief1 If so, the art should be Jamel right up in your face looking aver his glasses at you.
@@joeday4293 That is the shot that just cracks me up. I don't get this much anticipation from anything on TV.
Charlie was also known as the Silver Fox. This was probably from the mid 1970's
early 80's probably. Charlie was the first of a resurgence in Country around the late 70's early 80's when country and pop co-mingled. The Bellemy Bros and Alabama were taking off around the time when Charlie was getting up a second head of steam.
April 1973: It spent 20 weeks on the country charts, and of course, was a huge pop crossover. In 2003, it ranked #9 in CMT's 100 Greatest Songs in Country Music.
@@cudwieser3952 - Behind Closed Doors is a 1973 album by Charlie Rich. The album received the Country Music Association award for Album of the Year; the title track was also named CMA's Single of the Year, and Rich was named Best Male Vocalist for his performance on the album.
I agree the song is from the early 70s, but this performance is likely from early 80s as Charlie has gotten some age on him, and his voice is cracking unlike when he recorded the song.
He was called the silver haired fox not the silver fox. My dad used to listen to him all the time on vinyl. He had the best of Charlie Rich
OMG!!! OMG!!!! I’m dumbfounded to see this! My grandma LOVED Charlie Rich (and George Jones) She had this record in her big ole cabinet style record player- I was listening to whatever I could get my hands on in PRE-SCHOOL ,all the way to allowance age, when I could start buying my own 45 records- THIS is a song I absolutely LOVED at a very young age! Didn’t really grasp the full meaning then, (knew it was about “love” 😆) I just loved the way it sounded- “Halfbreed” by Cher was another one- anyway, sooo ready to listen now! 🤘🏼💛💟☮️🤘🏼✌️
I could never keep it straight between Charlie Rich and Charlie Pride when I was a kid. Both were country stars with huge crossover hits.
Short of seeing pictures of both (and RCA Records purposely held out as long as they could before "revealing" to southern white record buyers, and radio programmers Pride's race---remember, this was the '60s!), it might've helped you to know Rich was "Charlie," and Pride was "Charley." But, I get it, especially when younger!
Same, I’m thinking he’s a black dude, started watching the video and realized I was thinking of Charlie Pride
That’s Easy! Charlie Pride KISS an Angel Good Morning! Charlie Rich,. Has the most beautiful girl in the world! Easy! 😂👍
"The Silver Fox". Many don't know, Charlie started out singing rockabilly on Sun Records. Used to have a collection of those songs on vinyl, very rare. Wish I still had it.
I gasped just now when I saw you had reacted to Charlie Rich. The silver fox. My mama raised me right. Listening to Charlie. Love Charlie so much.
Saw him several times as a child. Parents would take me with them to concerts. Got to meet him, Charlie Pride, Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and so many other great country artists
This is what you call old school country...gotta love it!
I remember my mom being in love with this guy when I was a kid. I'm 60 years old now and moms been gone for years. This song brings tears to my eyes.
Mine too, she used to say he could stick his boots under her bed any time he wanted to.
@@maryroberts9233 you officially just freaked me out because my mother's name was Mary Roberts. She passed away last year. That's my post right above yours. Wow.
One of the greatest piano intros in country music. 🎹
He said, "I got just 2 words..." I knew what was coming next. Cracked me up! Freaky Deaky!
Ronnie Milsap time! "Stranger in my house", "Smoky mountain rain", "I wouldn't have missed it for the world", "Inside", "Where do the nights go?" Duet with Kenny Rogers "She's mine". Many, many more. Jerry Reed "East bound and down" and "She's got the gold mine, and I got the shaft".
I'm not a big country fan, but love me some Ronnie Milsap! His songs are more crossover, pop/country.
I have his greatest hits cd and play that thing out. I play keyboard and sing a bit and have figured out how to play some of his hits. Great stuff!
My mother loved this song. She played it all the time. I cannot hear it without thinking of her. Great song.
I can always tell when the song starts really speaking to you, soon as you start pickin' up what they're puttin' down, you get that look... Lol! Charlie was one of the best old school country crooners. Voice as smooth as fresh churned butter! RIP Charlie.
God i miss this! I wish i had 5$ for everytime i polished my belt buckle to this song back in the early 70s.
Do some Don Williams, Lord I hope this day is Good, Living on Tulsa Time, that's a good start.
I agree on Don Williams. I would add his 'I believe in You' to the list as well.
I’ve tried to get him to do Don Williams. Tulsa Time and I believe in You. No luck yet.
Such a great singer and such a great song.
Memories of riding in my dad’s 73 Chevy listening to this on the AM radio ❤️
Charlie Rich was called "The Silver Fox". He was a superb pianist. Excellent song. My Mom loved his music. Check out another of his songs called, "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World". My Mom loved his Silver hair.
Have you ever reacted to George Jones, “He Stopped Loving Her Today”. It is the saddest song ever. By the Possum
Yes, do He Stopped Loving Her Today. Old school country. Old school country tear-jerker.
YES! This would be amazing. As James Taylor said, that song will make your dog weep. It will make your roof leak, it's so sad.
Charlie sang mainly Blues, and he was into Jazz. C&W was a sideline. When the Beatles met Elvis in 1965 he was playing "Mohair Sam" by Charlie Rich over and over.
Whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of that scene in the movie “Every Which Way But Loose” when Clint Eastwood takes his pet orangutan, Clyde, to a nearby zoo and drops him into the orangutan habitat. Clyde then gives the “thumbs up” when he meets his female companion to do the “freakie deakie”. Then that Charlie Rich song starts playing when he closes the door!🤣
@@leemcintyre9490 Must hunt out the dvd. Great duo of films. Ruth Gordon and clyde are the two stars of the films.
The only movies my father and I went to see in the theater: the every which way but loose series..
Love it! My Dad grew up with him in Colt Arkansas. He held me when I was a little baby. Nice guy. ❤️❤️
I am rock and roller, but Charley was my first concert, I went to see him with my parents, when I was about 7.
Thank you for exploring classic country. Charlie Rich bends words around the notes.
The Great Charlie Rich!! A Piano Man. Most beautiful Charlie Rich song: "A Very Special Love Song"
A classic! My mom used to play this song when I was a child and though I didn't understand back then what it was about it brings me comfortable feelings of a time I miss so much!
Yes more classic country! If you want some more by Charlie Rich My Elusive Dreams and Pieces of My Life are some of my favorites and of course his most well known song The Most Beautiful Girl
His music was always easy listening. My wife and I seen him in concert here in Madison one time, what a beautiful show.
Charlie Rich was old school outlaw before Outlaw Country was even a word, His music was great! Give a listen to "Rollin With The Flow" "Bring it on home" "The Most Beautiful Girl" .
I remember seeing that clip of him at the country awards show, announcing John Denver as an award winner and burning the announcement card in his hand as he did it.
I'm guessing because he didn't percieve John Denver as being country? Lol
@@Gutslinger And Thad ruined his career sadly. I don't think he was ever invited to another awards show after that. There's a video on UA-cam of him talking about it and he said he didn't do it out of anger he just did it without thinking
@@leann2045 I read another comment thread where someone claimed that he never spoke about it, but said that his son did. Either way, they claimed that he was drunk, and possibly on drugs. Which could explain him doing it without having any anger, I guess.
Charlie was a member of the SUN Records studio in Memphis along with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash and played piano on several of their hits. He was there at the beginning of Rock n Roll and later found stardom as a country singer.
Love, love, love this song. His nickname was “The Silver Fox.” His voice was incredibly smooth.
Love that you put the hat on!!! IMO this is one of the sexiest songs ever written. This song peaked at #15 on the billboard hot 100 in 1973
The women called him the silver fox🙋🏻♀️💕
charlie rich life has its little ups and Downs is his best song! In fact, I had no idea his voice was that good until I heard this song.
When you get a chance, check out some fun tunes by Jerry Reed.
Eastbound and Down
Texas Bound and Flyin
Amos Moses
She Got the Goldmine
When You're Hot, You're Hot
My elusive dream is my favourite Charlie Rich song. Worth a listen.
You must play Freddie Fender...please? His voice is so beautiful! Live studio, it does not matter
I’ll be there when the last teardrop falls... love that song! I know he had others but that was the big one.
@@scottferrell2806 agreed!! My face of his for sure. And someone close to him I love is in the song Hey Baby Que Paso ...it always gets stuck in my brain for days when I hear it, lol
This song is old gold. Awesome.
I'll never forget when Charlie Rich was announcing the award for Entertainer of the Year at the 1975 CMA. He was drunk or drugged, maybe both. He mumbled the names of the nominees, struggled to open the envelope, dropping it in the process. When he picked it up he set it on fire with a lighter then announced the winner as "My friend John Denver." He never addressed the incident as far as I know but it didn't help his career and he was banned from the CMAs. He later had a great Jazz influenced album in the 90s. One hell of a musician.
His son spoke of it. And yes he had been drinking and taking pain meds. It was the last time Rich was invited to take part in the CMAs as well.
Interesting. Lol I saw that clip, and percieved it as him being mad that John Denver won. Thought maybe he was ,ad because he didn't see John Denver as being country or something.
He didn’t see John Denver as country at the time. He was quoted as saying that when I was little. He later turned to religious music after having a conversion. He died saying he was sorry for the past.
@@geraldineekhator5428 God knows I've said and done plenty of things I'm ashamed of. Fortunately not in front of millions of people though.
This song was SO SCANDALOUS when it came out back in the 70's!!! My dad wouldn't let me listen to it, but my mom would...Go mom! 😉
This brings me back to the turntable/furniture and my folks old LPs.
My late mother loved Charlie Rich. Today is her birthday 💖💖 thanks for a memory.
Ha ha, I knew the "freaky deaky" was coming. Love the hat, you cracked me up again, Jamel! ROFL!
The guy had agreat voice him and Elvis were fan's of each other, the Siver Fox
When he said " I got only 2 words... 2 words...", I knew what he was going to say and said it before he said them. " Freaky Deaky!" That made my night that much more better.
charlie rich charlie pride love the charlies back in the 70s
You need to do George Jones, "He stopped loving her today". One of the saddest songs ever written.
Oh we got some soul and country here Pop perfection Charlie Rich love you hope you love
"Rollin With the Flow" "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" "A very special love song"" She called me baby baby"

Yes, "The Most Beautiful Girl" is the next entrance to go!
CHARLIE RICH: HE IS & HAS BEEN & ALWAYS WILL BE MY FAVORITE COUNTRY BOY SINGER!!!!!!!!!!!
And she lets her hair hang down
The Silver Fox !! oh Hell yeah Jamel !! This Music will never stop sounding Great !! what a Classic !!
Country mega-hit. Became a standard for the Silver Fox. (Oh, yeah - he had a lot of granny panties thrown on his stage!)
Classic country music is GREAT with being some of the sexiest music around while still having lyrics that you don't gotta be worried about "little pitchers with big ears" hearing
This was about 1973, on the heals of his other hit: the Most Beautiful Girl in the World.
Great reaction, man. I love this song, been enjoying it since I was a kid in the 70s.
"I Think We`re Alone Now" by Tommy James & The Shondells
This brought back a memory of them playing for BSHS prom in 1975. I was there with my Hs love and they played at Leonard’s in Great Neck. Tommy had lived in Baldwin and played as a favor. It was so much fun.
Tommy James has a tune with one of the greatest bass lines ever produced!” Draggin’ the Line “ has that crazy lead in that is just awesome! Lol! The lyrics are pure hippy dippy flower power stuff ( which I love as well ), but he just shines in the construction of that tune. Doesn’t he hold some kind of record for having the most songs in the top ten at the same time?
Charlie was a classically trained piano player who happened to love blues and rockabilly. Wound up at Sun studios, and actually played piano on a couple of Jerry Lee Lewis rockers. Had an early rock hit with Lonely Weekends.
@2:19 - "Oh, if we gonna do this, we gonna do this right ..." You never fail, Jamal. No matter what mood I'm in, you always find a way to make me laugh !!
The Silver Fox. Ol’ Charlie goes back to the very beginning of Rock ‘n’ Roll as part of the Sun Records stable of artists in the early 1950’s. He had to wait until 1973 to have this hit.
Reminds me of my parents dancing in the kitchen when I was a kid💕💕💕
This was the great country sound of the 60's...miss it.
Great reaction. You don't hear a lot of Charlie Rich anymore... well, except on my record player that is.
Charlie settled into country, but he went a long time where he didn't really fit anywhere (although, incredibly good is a pretty good place to be). He started out in the birthplace of rock n roll. He was one of the originals at Sun Record Studios along side The Million Dollar Quartet (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins). If you're going to dive into Charlie a little bit, Rollin' With The Flow should be right behind The Most Beautiful Girl.
Saw him live in Macon Ga in 1974. With Charlie Pride and Jim Stafford
My husband just grabbed my hand and wanted to dance a few steps, when he heard you reacting to this. Aww. 😊❤️
Love Charlie Rich this song is great!!
During my country phase this was my favorite song. I am so glad I grew up listening to everything from classical to Soul and everything in between
Don Williams...Tulsa Time! Charlie made the phase “behind close doors” American slang.
This was one of my dads fave tunes. My dad passed a few years ago, I miss him every day. Thx for playing this 💕
Now you are hitting my grandparents music
Charlie's style originally was rockabilly, jazz, and blues. He shared his talent in Country music because that was how he made money. Check out Charlie Rich in late 50s. early 60s. Good jazzy rockabilly and blues. A piano man.
Short list of Best Country songs of all time
George Jones: "He Stopped Loving Her Today". THE Best Country song IMO
Tammy Wynette: "D-I-V-O-R-C-E"
George Strait: "Amarillo By Morning"
Also quite partial to this pair
Marty Robbins: "El Paso" and the sequel "El Paso City"
Hope you get to React to these tunes Jamel.
Growing up, my dad was a pianist/lead singer in a country-western cover band. This was one of the songs he covered. Hearing this brought back many great memories of my father. Thank you. Miss you, every day, Pop.
Some radio stations in Louisiana banned this record at the time.
One of my favorite country songs.
I'm crying with laughter 🤣 Definitely the definition of freaky deaky 🤫
Man, this guy was talented. I was a little kid when this came out in the early 70s. It was always on the juke box in the little restaurant in the small town i lived in. Takes me back.
Gotta watch out for those shy quiet ones... i know, i'm one of them 😂😂
Boy, this brings back memories...love this song! From my teen years - the 70s.
I'm sure your getting bugged by this, but "The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia" by either Vicki Lawrence or Reba.
One of the most provocative country songs. Ole Charlie was right!
How about Jerry Jeff Walker - Mr. Bojangles
Or George Jones - He Stopped Loving Her Today
I vote for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band doing Mr. Bojangles! The Possum I could definitely get into!
Our judges would also accept Todd Snider telling the Bojangles story and then performing it.
Robert Lagow I’ll have to listen to that, and the Jerry Jeff Walker one. I think the only versions I’ve ever heard are NGDB and Sammy. I like Sammy’s version too. It’s just a great song!
Yay! The Silver Fox! Haven't heard that song in a long time.
checkout "rollin' with the flow"
That is a good one. It was said one of his early hits, Mohair Sam, was a favorite topic of discussion when the Beatles met Elvis.
Charlie was VERY versatile too! He played great rock and roll in the 50s, Jazz and even some great soul music before he got big in the country field. Check out some of his Smash recordings when he was recording soul. That was some awesome stuff!
If you like that kind of music you should check out Conway Twitty-the original ladies man of country music lol.
Jamel you were hilariously pitch perfect with your reaction to this. You are a star .
Omg I love your channel. It’s 2am here in Australia and as usual I can’t sleep. I love your reactions, thanks for keeping me company throughout the night.
