The Lucky Star/Haruhi/Touhou/Vocaloid era was what I got to experience when I was in elementary school (not Japanese but I got bullied and watched a lot of UA-cam so I learned all of this stuff before it was at least semi trendy.) Also played Taiko Drum Master, the one localized Taiko No Tatsujin game at the time but I never realised those games had songs from the other fandoms I mentioned (when I went to Japan the arcade Taiko machines had a touhou event and I had a huge nostalgia rush at the same time as crying over something personal). But yeah even though I didn't fully process everything in this era, it's hugely nostalgic to me even though I'm younger than most of the people who remember it, and I think it's part of the reason I'm so determined to move to Japan, at least for a few years
kumikyoku literally changed my life... it introduced me to so much stuff when i was like 14yo and I became obsessed with it all through my teenhood :3 weeb4life
O boy has it really been so long,it feels weird it being heard it being refered as early culture when at the time it was seen as the culmination of so many thriving communities on the site commimg together in a collaboration effort. Just s few minor notes: * all the touhou segments (save from tsurupettan) besides refetencing the games were also direct references to the music circle (i.e: fan cover band) IOSYS, which made plenty of comedic covers along with fun animations, they are still active in the famdom as as grneral nettizens to this very day and even one of their members is a VTuber ** Reisen IOSYS' Cover is known as "Overdrive" in the west(Kinda easier to remmber than "Kanbu de Tomatte sugu Tokeru ~ kupuki no udongein" just a bit) * Mario's forest maze also references Kirbopher/Christopher Niosi flash animation "Rawest Forest" and the remix "Geno's Forest ROBOVouce" by DJ_XBrav, christoper nowdays is a Proffessional voice actor and ocassionally does gamming livestreams * Air man ga Taosenai, is NOT based on air man's theme but rather it,(and other songs by thd same circle) were made as parodies of a (crappy) player failing at the game, and being stuck on a catch, thy origimally wanted help in heat man's level draling with a segmen with dissapearing blocks over a lava and blttomless pit, so they were recommended using a hover board that is obtained by defeating air man... But they can't defrat airman, and they are suggested to obatain eoodman's weapon, as it is airman's weakness, but they can't defeat woodman either, so they get sugested to obtain heat man's weapon, as he is weak to it... But they need the hover board to reach Heatman... And they nerd the leaft shield yo defeat air man... And they need atomi fire to defeat woodman... And they need the hover board the reach heat man..And they need... It's bizarre how these niched geeky-nerdy Touhou things went mainstream in the era when nothing could go mainstream pretty much.

The exaggerated huge eyes and high pitched voices remain a staple over time.
