We are fairly familiar with the area but our data was years old. The water tower was probably less than a mile. I used a hand held compas w/ 5 degree increments in choppy waters. We had plotted a course so we had a general idea-this plot included compass variation. Mostly though we relied on our depth finder, reading the water & watching similiar draft boats navigate the channel. Fishing boats proved helpful as they usually fish the edges. the method worked for us this time & this pass

Yes, you're right - the blue water, larger power boats coming out and the small fishing boats on the edge of the channel were the best aides. You have to be careful in these waters because the bottom is white sand and the water is pretty clear-Some of those dark areas are sea grass!

follow the color, that blue water in the video is a clear sign to me, the more yellow it gets the shallower the water is

Just wondering if when you are running shallows, and taking mag bearings off distant points, if you are working compass variation, deviation, or declination at all? If not, you might easily find yourself where you think you aren't.

Hello.... yes that pass can get tricky... even for a power boat. I have seen a few sitting on ground there and it is most of the time on there return trip. I just wanted to let you know I really enjoy watching your vids. I know the tampa bay area very well...... only I have been a power boater for the last 25 years. I have now purchased a small sailboat... 22 ft. and I am learning to sail and having a blast at it. Again your vids are very helpfull and I enjoy listening to you two as a team! Do you have a website or something to follow? I would love to ask you a few questions.....

Thanks for the kind comments! I don't really have a website but here is my blog - svhideaway.blogspot.com/ what sailboat did you get? The HideAway at 23 foot fixed keel has been more than enough for us-Any thing bigger would take away the fun. There is one scene in this video facing south as we enter Bunce's Pass. You can see the north end of North Beach- just off shore is some brilliant green water. That area is now a new island - pretty large too! Most of the trees on North Beach have been cut down-Its no longer a preferred destination. Fair winds Matt.
