    A bit of trivia. The coach that Jordan bumped into when his game winner waved off is Chris Ford. He played for the Celtics the first few years that Larry played. And he made the very first 3 point shot in the NBA.

      Kicking Horace Grant's butt you mean. Bird and Jordan weren't guarding eachother. Celtics got the win here,but from 1988 and on they lost most of the games to the Bulls,pretty much because they started to decline as the Bulls started to improve. Prior to 1988 Celtics usually destroyed the Bulls.

    This was the same game where Celtics No. 35 Reggie Lewis blocked Jordan's shot FOUR TIMES. ua-cam.com/video/fi5BORi8Rck/v-deo.html
    If you don't know his story, Lewis was an up and coming star. He would make his first All-Star Game the following year in 1992. Then in a 1993 playoff game he suddenly collapsed on the court. He was diagnosed with a heart condition and a few weeks later during an off season workout he suffered a heart attack and died.

    • @kevincosta9228
      @kevincosta9228 Рік тому +1

      That's still painful. I didn't have to happen, IMO. The Celtics assembled a team of the best cardiologists in the world who told Lewis he would have to quit playing or risk death. From media coverage at the time, it appears his wife convinced him to get a second opinion. The second opinion was from a single doctor who claimed Lewis had a treatable condition and shouldn't worry about continuing to play. A couple weeks later he was dead.

As you delve into Bird more you will learn what he was going through and what had to be done to "unlock" his back for 4-6 hours so that he could play a game. Bird said himself that he should have retired in 1989 and was constantly wondering if he would be able to walk or hold his kids if he kept playing.

    Larry Bird Regular Season Statistics vs Jordan:
    *26.9 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 6.4 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.9 BPG
    These are Facts!
    Jordan numbers were STAGGERING. Jordan averaged nearly 40 POINTS PER GAME against Bird in their head to head matchups in the playoffs. He also dominated Bird in their head to head regular season matchups, but lost against a veteran Celtics team full of Hall of Famers in the playoffs because he simply didn't have enough talent on his team. Jordan will go on to win 6 championships (Maybe 7 or 8 if he didn't retire in his prime) and his 1996 Bulls team would eventually win 72 regular season games -- the second most in NBA history. Jordan's talent and accomplishments were clearly far superior to Bird's. Bird should never be compared to Jordan because it's just not fair to him. They are NOT the same. Jordan was completely different. Magic/Bird is the appropriate comparison.

    • @carolehall1000
      @carolehall1000 Рік тому +1

      Absolutely. Alternatively, he could have passed it to Pippen. on the other wing. This game actually highlights perhaps Jordan's biggest weakness - inappropriately hogging the ball - which took him half his career to mitigate. Their only option in the time remaining is to make a 3 to get a 3rd overtime. That's it. In this game, Pippen has made 3 out of 4 of his 3pt attempts. Paxson is batting 1000 having made 5 out of 5 of his 3pt attempts. Both are in position. Meanwhile, Jordan hasn't made a single 3pt shot. What does he do? Takes it himself. Not only that, he seems to panic shoot. When he misses, what do his teammates do? Exactly what he's trained them to do. Grant and Cartwright, in the middle, make sure to get the ball back to Jordan for a 2nd failed attempt.
      This is about the time that Jordan finally started to change (occasionally) and get the ball to a better positioned teammate where appropriate in clutch time and finally begin to win championships. He'd never admit it, but I've often wondered if this is the game that made the difference.

    • @davidschmidt1793
      @davidschmidt1793 Рік тому +3

      @@carolehall1000 I agree he should have passed in this play, mainly after his first 3pt attempt. But Jordan usually took the last shot,even in difficult situations, because he made them more often than not. Pippen was the opposite of clutch and I'd be reluctant to see the ball in his end in the clutch even if he was having a perfect game. With an open Paxson however, Jordan should have passed. If this game was a turning point, we don't know, but in this same year Jordan fed Paxson the ball play in the 4th quarter after play in game 5 of the finals and the Bulls won, so maybe you're right.

    • @carolehall1000
      @carolehall1000 Рік тому

      @@davidschmidt1793 Those passes to an on-fire Paxson just weeks after this game, along with that pass to Paxson for the game winner in a later finals is what got me to thinking about this over the years! When Jordan spoke about it, he seemed so proud to have done it. Also, I probably did a poor job of communicating, so thanks for responding so I get a chance to clarify! Jordan usually did make his shots and was definitely more clutch than Pippen on the whole. I was trying to convey that even where appropriate - a better positioned teammate, a teammate having a hot night - it just didn't seem to be a possibility in Jordan's crunch time mindset during the first half of his career. (He'd do it outside of crunch time.) FWIW, not only this game, but the Dream Team experience which happened the next year, may also have had an impact. That Team was all about passing the ball and team play. Of course there wasn't really ever a clutch situation in any of those games, but if you watch the highlights of even their very first game together, the qualifier against Cuba, it's well into the 1st period before Michael Jordan even makes his first basket. The Michael Jordan! It's remarkable. He was obviously efforting playing real team ball.
      This game with the Celtics is absolutely a game the Bulls should have won. This is physical prime Jordan and physical prime Pippen on a team in a championship season against old, broke down, broke back Bird and his battered Celtics. Bird's back was so bad at this point, he was in the hospital for a Hail Mary surgery just after this season ended. McHale was mostly back on the bench during this point in his career because he had so much trouble with his feet and an additional ankle injury had made him miss the 6 games prior to this game. The only reason he was even at this game is they planned to put him in for 5 minutes here or there to judge how his recovery was going. Because of this game staying close and leading to double overtime, he ended up playing way more minutes than intended (but still only about 20.) Parish is holding up pretty well but he is 37 (almost 38) years old at this point. Even Reggie Lewis, one of the young guys the Celtics hoped would take them into the future past the Big 3's playing days had a back injury that had originally been going to keep him out of this game.
      Maybe I'm falling into the trap of getting so caught up in the mythos and lore surrounding the legendary career of Jordan, that I'm just looking for the reason his team lost. Maybe it's not so much that he lost but that the Celtics just...won. Maybe my focus should be that having the heart to play through pain, the sense to call on strategies honed through years of experience, their knowledge of the game and the players was enough to battle and beat the youth, health and skill of their opponents.

    • @davidschmidt1793
      @davidschmidt1793 Рік тому +2

      @@carolehall1000 Yea, you're probably right. You could definitely see Jordan trusted his team mates more during their championship years, even passing to Bill Wennington for the game winner in that double nickel game in 1995. Prior to the 90s he usually took matters into his hands. I guess he just matured and started seing the game differently. That's one of the reasons I'd choose his 89-93 version over the high scoring 86-88 version any day.

      @@davidschmidt1793 💯89-93 Jordan is the best Jordan! Thanks for the interaction. I love that era of basketball, and it's nice to hear the opinions of someone knowledgeable about it!

    No, he never lost in the playoffs (they face only 2 times 86/87) against mj but in the regular season oh multiple times mj handle his ass. plus that larry birds team had 5 hall of famers while jordan had himself and without him the bulls were the worse team in the league at the time.

    I watched it live. Michael Jordan might have Scored 71 It takes a team to win the game jordan was a ball hog

      Nobody on the team created more shots for his team mates than Jordan,which is why he usually led in assist rate. People mistake Jordan's volume shooting for ball hogging. Jordan was asked to shoot in volume and he did so,efficiently. What Jordan had was a high usage rate. He shot in volume but also created more plays for his team mates than anyone else on the team.

    When you learn to be quiet I'll be back. You apparently can't see how you take the enjoyment out of watching. ..and stopping the video routinely routinely rakes away the movement and consistency. You comments are meaningless and the commentary is completely lost. GOOD BUY!

      Personally, I'd rather reactors pause to comment, rather than talk over the game which causes them to miss important stuff.
