  • In this video I am showcasing finished depth by rendering the particles 2 times, with the second pass using an additive texture (see top right). That texture is then used during rendering in absorption calculations.

I've never commented on these videos before, but after seeing the rapid progress you've made on this project, I'd have to offer praise. I'm sure you've heard it plenty, but this is literally the coolest shit to have been done in Source. This implementation of fluid looks genuinely better than what I've seen from most big-budget games, even the ones that utilize things like PhysX. And it seems to run so well! I will definitely spend countless hours messing with this when it releases.

i just noticed that whenever multiple particles are moving quickly it sparkles. in a lot of cases, this is correct but in some, like when there is a large body of water swishing around there dont appear to be any stray particles, and yet it still has that sort of sparkly look. other than that, it looks amazing and properly like fluid splatting against the floor.

suggestion: light polarisation, AKA how you only see reflections off of water from viewing at a large angle perpendicular to the surface of the water, unless that has already been implemented.

he should also add ray tracing, individual molecules instead of blobs, a temperature system where it freezes if it's too cold and boils when it's too hot, object staining, and a system for predicting where water flow would come from a map (i have zero clue on how to make any of these)

    • @Salok_z

Killing Floor 2 did this a long time ago but this is rarely used because cheap pre-made 2D and 3D effects are infinitely faster for your potato PC to render while looking far better than any real-time fluid simulation could hope to achieve at playable FPS in current decade. It's Source engine but see how his PC chugs with only 100,000 particles and realize you'll need millions to even compare to the fidelity of any pre-made blood splatter

You are now literally doing things you could get a job at Valve for. Everything from the infinite maps, to now what is genuinely a good standard video-gamey water sim, you are pushing the engine to its boundaries and thinking outside the box; those are the traits that pushed HL2 into being what it was. And you're doing all of this in a mod for a game that is literally as old as I am. Brilliant.

While it doesn't look like water, more like jelly/slime, it's still an insane feat for such an old engine, I can't grasp my head around how well it processes all that movement and interaction.
Not sure if it is the texture, shadering or colour is too light blue that gives me the slime vibe, could be the lack of foam or bubbles that usually builds up by movement,
I wish I had the knowledge to express proper feedback.
But, the blood looks really good, I really like how it sticks to surfaces and builds up the darker tint with the quantity of fluid, I think you really did well with the blood.
Do each particle have it's own weight that can interact with objects or is that temporarily disabled, would be interesting to see if you could use this water for making Rube Goldberg Contraption or even ride the water with a floating object.
Are you ever planning on moving to Source 2 or Sandbox for reimplementation or will Source/Gmod be your bread and butter?
