Good ole 22 mag . Rock solid rimfire performance. From subsonic to , frangible high velocity stuff to heavy 45 & 50gr & fmj . When it comes to homesteads, hobby farms & small game & putting food on the table or keeping pests out of the garden or putting predators down . The 22 mag has it’s place & is hard to beat .
Agreed. If you look at the energy at 100 m for 22 magnum (CCI JSP, 40gr) ~ 170 ft lb, for 17 HMR (CCI Vmax, 17gr) ~ 130 ft lb, and for 22LR (CCI Mini mag, 36gr) ~ 80 ft lb - many of the answers become clear. Bottom line 22 magnum has double the energy of 22LR and significantly more than 17HMR. However, for short range practice to 50m 22LR is a great choice especially when you consider price of 22LR. In contrast both 22 magnum and 17HMR are very useable out to around 150m. For reference a 9mm at 50m will have ~ 280 ft lb energy (at 25m ~ 310 ft lb) and a 22 magnum ~ 230 ft lb energy (at 25m ~ 270 ft lb). In other words 22 magnum has plenty of stopping power. Ultimately there is no replacement for energy delivered, it just becomes a choice of how you want that energy delivered (e.g. bullet choice). For small pest/vermin eradication on smaller properties its hard to go past 22 magnum.
Ahhh... That was great. 😂The look on his face when he realized you had the 17WSM, hilarious. Even still, it was a great comparison. Great demo of how heavier bullets usually have that penetration. Even with the WSM's crazy high velocity, exploding whatever it hits, it doesn't penetrate the same as a heavier projectile. But that flat shooting, super accurate & shallow hitting 17, makes for a fantastic varmint cartridge & a great long range small game cartridge. Even if it would've been a 17HMR, they're awesome long range on small game & deviating effects on pesky pests. It just evaporates those little critters. I'm def a big fan of both cartridges. had to comment ... I came looking for videos reviewing the 17 WSM, but now I have to ask ...What are you doing with a GSP pup mere feet from the shooting table? !!! Are you trying to make that dog gun-shy? The guy holding the dog is wearing hearing protection, and he's holding a pup that close to the gun that is NOT! As a dog handler/owner/hunter for almost 3 decades, I can tell you that is NOT the way to introduce a dog to gunfire. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm calling you out, but I felt compelled to point out this grave mistake for all those that might interpret this as the way to introduce their dog to gunfire. I wish you the best with that dog and hope this hasn't harmed the dog gun-wise.
The 17 wsm is best coyote gun and beaver gun I heard. I think a lot of people forget cotyes and especially beavers are way bigger then most other species of animals they call varmints.
Had to stop watching after only one minute of the video due to the fact that that poor puppy had to endure the report of the gunshot! I can only imagine how loud that would have been for the poor pup.
Highlight of this video is the pointer ( peace of advice for the guy holding the puppy ) it was jumpy after the shots . Always play loud music around it so he or she isn’t like that after shots . It’s a hunting dog after all . And less on lap.

Thanks for watching! One of these days I'll be able to afford a camera guy! 22 mag is a great round, but I think the 17 wsm has potential. Especially as a long range target round.
There is actually a 15gr all copper 3rd option, but it's even harder to find...
@@BuckeyeBallistics amy all copper bullet to me is junk. Never a had a Barnes bullet yet that will fly to any degree if accuracy in in any of my rifles. Been reloading them on and off since Barnes came to maket Back in the late 90’s. Their projectiles have always been either the same diameter or smaller than my rifle bore and skip down the barrels. Like throwing a hotdog down a hallway. If Barnes was smart they would offer a couple of sizes in each caliber offering in one thousand size increments. I still wouldn’t shoot them because I like the way faster kills with a better expanding soft lead jacketed or soft lead cast bullet.
@@BuckeyeBallistics I've never seen that one. Sounds very interesting...
17 WSM would be a great round if it was available and you didn't have to buy a Savage to shoot it.
A 22 hornet k would have done the same thing to the can that the 17 wsm did.only not as cheap.
Thanks for watching!
22 Mag forever! However, .17WSM looks fun. I believe the WSM is an obscure round to procure?
Thanks for watching! The 22 Mag is a great round. 17 WSM is super fun too, but as you guessed, almost impossible to find ammo for.
Wasn't it a 22 mag that took the balloon down?? LOL
Thanks for watching! It did go down shortly after passing by our range....🤔
He hit the thinnest part of the bone
Thanks for watching! He was having a bad day, so I let it slide.
No me parece Justo.. desde Patagonia Argentina. .
*Im more impressed that you actually have .17WSM ammo. Where did you find that?*
Thanks for watching! I had to order it off the popular gun auction site.
@@TheOldFatDadGoober Mojave? That's what I was afraid of 😕
The ammo is readily available in the Midwest.
young skinny lad to me resembles Adrien Brody with a mustache
Thanks for watching! I can see it.
You'd get the same results as the .17 if you place a .22 pellet in front of a Ramset charge; preferably a #3 or#.5.
Thanks for watching! I think the bullet is a little more ballistically capable than a pellet in most cases.
@@TheOldFatDadGoober I was just referring to the devastation to that dog food can 😁
had to comment ...
Thanks for watching!
The 17 wsm is best coyote gun and beaver gun I heard. I think a lot of people forget cotyes and especially beavers are way bigger then most other species of animals they call varmints.
Thanks for watching! It's perfect for big small game.
Why save the bone. Just asking?
Thanks for watching! Bones are good for broth. They are also good for shooting.
have both, like the 17 wsm better.
Thanks for watching! I like the big 17 too.
.17 WSM for the win
Thanks for watching!
Even the 17hmr will blow a can of dog food up more than 22 mag
Thanks for watching!
Just started following you about 2 months ago keep up the good work try to comment for the algorithm
Truck placement is MINT!!
Thanks for watching!
Had to stop watching after only one minute of the video due to the fact that that poor puppy had to endure the report of the gunshot!
I can only imagine how loud that would have been for the poor pup.
Thanks for watching!
The 22 mag will kill anything.
Thanks for watching! While I don't disagree, it's worth noting that there are more effective options too.
Why exposing the little dog to that noise? You humans are wearing ear protection, duuh.
Thanks for watching!
Highlight of this video is the pointer ( peace of advice for the guy holding the puppy ) it was jumpy after the shots . Always play loud music around it so he or she isn’t like that after shots . It’s a hunting dog after all . And less on lap.
Thanks for watching! The dog is going to be half lap half hunting dog. Getting him used to gunshots was the secret mission of the day.
Can't really compare the two
Try a 222
But still take the mag all day i bet you a good 22 bullet would have blown through too
I took a big coyote at 206 yards ran 40 though but went threw him
Thanks for watching! I think it was an excellent comparison.
Put some ear pro on that pup lol.
Thanks for watching!
more of the puppy.
Thanks for watching! He's a good boy, but he's not my puppy unfortunately.
@@TheOldFatDadGoober awww, still an excellent clip though. I learned something new and enjoy the interaction you guys have. All the best.
Personally i prefer the .22 mag.
Thanks for watching! 22 Mag is a great round.
How about can’t shoot bear and the bad news bears
Thanks for watching! That sounds about right.
im definitely sticking with the 22 for ocean otters, i think that 17 is gonna damage the fur
Thanks for watching!
You can’t count those two shoulder hits. Lol
@@xforce708 Thanks for watching!
17 hornet is even bader.
Thanks for watching!
The dog will be deaf lol
Thanks for watching!
That 17WSM just doesn't compare to a .300 Win Mag. 🙄
Thanks for watching! Amazing but true.
@@TheOldFatDadGoober ✌😁
17 doesn't have any penetration good for squirrel very small varmint
Thanks for watching!
22 mag all day.
It will do the trick.
