Singer and Pianist, with a big question mark after the noun "pianist", being the same person, I shudder everytime at that Intro. Can't do anything about it now. But the mystery remains. How did this live, "selfie", you might say, get onto UA-cam? One of the only live recordings that have ever graced the public music Arena, unintentionally on my behalf, recorded on a Sony Professional Walkman, with a high grade microphone, tip from Ken Neate, Australian Tenor, deceased. Recorded under very basic conditions in a Student College small auditorium, sight--reading the music and singing at the same time. Just think what might have become of me if I had had a Mentor. Thankyou, Herr Reis, wherever you are. I hope you found the love that you so pined for, in all sincerity. For me...well it's a trip down memory lane. Might not be too much of that left, now, from 2020 onwards. Apart from the cringing at the Piano responses, it does bring a smile and sometimes even a tear to my eyes, and I say silently, to myself, Thankyou, whoever you were for extending some pleasure and use to persons, world wide who would never have otherwise had the pleasure, so rudimentary as it is, to enjoy my voice, and rejoice with me in this beautiful, fleeting moment of Tchaikovsky's musical genius. The Composer may be dead and gone but the emotion stays Universal and is never forgotten.
This video is extremely helpful. I am doing this song for Solo & Ensemble (in Texas) and I couldn't seem to perfect my German, but this video is really helping me along. Thanks for this video, and the singer is absolutely stunning.
I was looking into doing this song for solo and ensemble too! I know that you are way past graduating but it makes me feel happy to know that i'm not the only one to sing this song
Dear Michele, Willard Sektberg, the pianist for Leonard Warren's rendition of Goethe's " Vertonung", plays the introduction "just right", - according to my taste.- of a newly noticed video in UA-cam , recorded in the year 1947. I am not in agreement with the singers rubati, and consider these extreme tempi contrasts as "affectations", though only mild in Mr. Warren's case compared with many other videos of the same song. Please note that Mr. Warren was a singer well known and respected in his time. Somehow, playing from sight on that seldom played upright piano for the first time , concentrating on the German then singing while sitting, this recording,- incidentally taped with a Sony professional Walkman and using a small professional Mike, both of which I still have, - now 30yrs old-plus, ended up, do not ask me how and by whom, in UA-cam. Nobody in their right professional mind would lay claim to it and I have spent a couple of months refusing to acknowledge rightful ownership of the bumbling, heavy handed introduction but then this old recording, appearing out of the blue, sort of synchronized with the Universe, fulfilling one of my needs, demands the respect. Thankyou for your kind words. I am glad I could serve you in some distant way. Then, even if there is not much to show for where I have trod in this world, this lives in your heart and that's enough for me to want to 'come clean' and admit to it, hoping that all the professional piano players and singers out there in 'perfectionist world' overlook the perfect example of heavy handedness in the intro. and the sometimes misplaced "correctness" of breathing technique that affects the shape and fullness of the voice. The other pianistic shortcuts are not so obvious, not like the live performance of a Beethoven Piano Concerto at the Sydney Opera House by a famous male pianist, many years ago. As a singer there were too many things to concentrate on at the one time to do justice to either techniques. After all, it was done as house music, so to say, to please a young man suffering heart ache : a student from Osnabrück/ Germany. I remember his family name but unfortunately forgot his first name. A very nice family. I stayed overnight with them for one of my auditions. You never mentioned how you went with yours?
Listen to him sing the same song with piano accompaniment. In this orchestral version the vocal sound feels awkward here and there and the top note somewhat forced whereas in the other version he immediately captures the pathos of the piece and conveys exactly the essential agony of the poet. To my ear the difference in the two recordings is akin to that between a shed and The Shard. Judge for yourself.

The singer's intonation is amazing! You rarely hear classical singers with such clarity, precision, and intonation. The diction could have been better. Many vowels were too englishy. Also, the timbre on the low notes sounds much like a boy in a low falsetto - crazy. Oh and this isn't live... but it's still a very genuine, honest performance
Dear Danny, what do you mean by " Oh and this isn't live....but it's still a very.....etc." Do you mean the recording is doctored? And you are right about the vowels.

Carolle Enkelman is both singing and playing herself! At least that is what her comment above tells us! I believe her. Pretty amazing! I also thought it to be one of the great classical artists of our time!!! ❤️ (Could have got a little help with German pronounciation - but otherwise perfection!) Thank you Carolle!
Bella y nostálgica canción qué muestra y resume el carácter romántico de este gran compositor y melodista ruso.Gracias por este vídeo.
Maravilhosa! Amo essa canção! Amo esse idioma tb. Me lembro do meu Villar. Ele me ensinou a falar alemão!

I don’t think he meant doctored or anything like that. Wow. 12 years ago. I wonder what Danny mulligan is doing right now
Magnífico
Erinnert mich heute immer an meinem Ex , welcher mir auch noch damals dieses Stück empfohlen hat. Wie hart die zynisch es nun wirkt. >D
아름답네요♡
Who sings this? it´s a charming voice.

Eine Frage..warum aufschreiben ( mit Fehler, "werp" statt "wer") wenn es schon zu lesen ist?
Es heißt " animated scores " mit Absicht.

I cannot resist the temptation to ask " how?"
I think this is a boys voice, it's too light and innocent to be a womans.
I must heartily chuckle when I read your words.
