  • The Primus No 71 stove is a classic vintage liquid camping stove from the Swedish stove company. Within traditional Aussie bushwalking circles, they're called a 'Choofa', because of the choof-choof-choof sound that the flame makes once it's properly primed. For many years, these were the go-to bush stove, heck, even Scott (of the Antarctic) took these on his expeditions... although not the 71. This one was refurbished by my good mate Hugh from Blue Mountains Climbing School and his parents took it on many an expedition and adventure.

    About Caro▸
I grew up in Sydney, Australia in a family that never went camping or on outdoor adventures. So it came as a surprise to discover hiking and camping in my mid 20’s and it fast became somewhat of an obsession.
Since then, I’ve become a leader with the Sydney Bush Walkers Club, Search Manager with NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue (responsible for the Blue Mountains region), navigation teacher and author of 'How to Navigate - The art of traditional map and compass navigation in an Australian context.'
I'm passionate about connecting people to wild places in meaningful ways.
Apart from sharing tips here on my UA-cam channel, my website and socials, you can find me as a regular contributor to Great Walks Magazine and other outdoors press. You might even catch me live on ABC radio Weekends with Simon Marnie and appearing as a speaker and workshop host at events such as Bushwalking Australia Conferences, ProBlogger, ORIC (Outdoor Recreation Industry) Conference, SheWentWild or the Women’s Adventure Summit. I am a member of the ASTW (Australian Society of Travel Writers) and you can also find me on TravMedia.
I am a brand ambassador for Macpac and some of the links within my site are affiliates. This means that I may earn a small commission from what you may purchase, whilst you pay no more. A nice win-win way of supporting my work that I really appreciate. Thanks!
Brands may buy my time, but they can't buy my opinion.

I remember the old timers talking about the choofas - not sure I would want to fire one up under a nylon tent 🔥

OMG, could you imagine! You might have noticed how I gingerly stepped back as Hugh was giving the demo!

Whokka whokka whokka - not much atmosphere around camp with one of these babies fired up.

For all good vintages out there (a bit like me) long may the choofa keep burning 🙂!

Interesting but I prefer my 'White Box' metho stove for boiling water, simple and works well with readily available methylated spirits.

I hear you. I've recently turned back to a meth stove (Trail Designs) like the ol' bottle can ones. So quiet, so simple.
