And this is how A R Rahman introduced rap to mainstream commercial Tamil Cinema. This song makes a statement where the hero is mocking traditional dance establishments. That is why foreigners are shown... they are there to learn traditional dance and are seen enjoying the rap.

Being a kid of 90s era, I can feel the nostalgia man!! It was really the golden days of music industry, seeing Prabhudeva & A R Rehman sir uniting & creating a musical masterpiece like this was a treat for music lovers like us..Jai Hind..
Theres a lot of places in India where people from all over the world including Europe and the US who come to learn Indian classical dances and music. It is a common sight in cities like Varanasi etc.
This is one of those movies where Rahman's music changed the face of tamil music. This is to tamil music what matrix was to hollywood actions flicks. This move is almost 30 years old and the songs still feel so contemporary. The song was a perfect representation of life in the Chennai slumlands
It’s the classiest modernised and most sophisticated ‘crass’ or ‘slapstick’ song you will ever hear. So spectacular mad weird and timeless .. Only ARR can diversify this way and make it memorable
AR Rahman mixed Western hip hop beats to classical Indian instrumentation. This was in the early 90s and this was never heard of before, at least not this good. ROJA may have been his first but this album immediately brought him to the top

Pettai means" slum or hamlet". The hero falls in love with a government official daughter. The song is in the place where the girl learns bharathanatyam. The hero goes there to disturb and make fun of her.
The song situation in the movie is Prabhu deva fell in love with the heroine. she is a daughter of governor of the state. To meet her prabhu deva joins the classical dance school prabhudeva dont know classical dance to impress her in other way he dance pettairap dance its usually done for deadbody funeral procession from home to graveyard.
LOL! Okay this movie is set around a Bhartnatyam (classical dance) school. Thats also why you see all the white people because - fun fact - a ton of people from around the world go to South India to learn classical Indian art forms, dance, instruments, singing, etc. Because they need to live there for years, and also train like the locals, you'll see a ton of them dressed in Indian clothes, saris etc. The actress is a traditionalist - believes classical dance should be kept pure, is for the 'upper class' etc etc. Prabhudeva plays an average Joe type guy who wants to lern dance but also bring his own style - aka breaking away from the more traditional mores. Its a fun watch!

U guys may have forgotten this but when reading about Brodha-V he had said he was inspired by a song called Pattai Rap and now u have heard it. Hope u can see the musical style inspiration.
yes, imagine how weird it was back in the 90's. Rahman sort of introduced western fusion songs back in those days which opened up a new type of genre in Tamil films which caught many younger generations at that time. Prior to Rahman's music, mostly was on classical based songs and commonly made by Ilayaraja (another legend in Tamil Music) Rahman literally changed the style of music back then.
The person dancing with Prabhu Deva is the legendary comedian Vadivelu, a genius in his own right. Welcome to the world of Vadivelu guys. Try to react to his comedy scenes.
You've just entered the holy territory of Tamil Gana (a type of laymans rap in Tamil Nadu). ARR has blessed it with grace and made it evergreen. Prabhu deva presented it with his authority on the local dance form called Kuthu. In Tamil Nadu, there is a cultural significance for this dance form. It is done by the drunk layman who dances it in a trance state during the final march to graves/funerals. It is in relation to the belief system which says even death should be a celebration as a birth. Kuthu dance is the most famous in South India and all people do it frequently to show their joy and sorrow. It's a philosophy by itself. India loves to see this dance songs from the South. You should react to the Gana songs and Kuthu songs.
It's from the same movie as the song mukaala mukaabla, and ya it's Prabhu devas first movie kadhalan. Every song is a classic, AR Rahman introduced fusion of Western and eastern instrumentation with this album and yes u should react to the other songs as well

It is a place like Kalashethra in Chennai where people from other states and countries come to learn indian dance. The dancer's rap is full of words depicting Chennai people's life arranged in a random way. It is funny because the words are added in allitration and also in a discipline. Even enjoyable. Both Prabhu Deva and Vadivel has got super timing sense.

Everything about this song is very unique. Every step Prabhu does and every lyric has a cultural reference to it. It was during the time when there was lot of western influence into Indian culture hence the tag line of the song "Pettai Rap" (pettai - area or locality or hood). As for the steps he does every single one of them has a local cultural reference. For example 4:50 every step is a he does in that small portion is a loose version of steps that Lord Shiva does in different phases. And there are other local references. To add to this ARR introduced modern Rap to Tamil music with this song.
To the uninitiated, this song is one of the weirdest, most puzzling songs in Tamil cinema (btw pure 90s). Lots of classic work from prabhudeva and AR Rahman are from Shankar directorials. He who directed “2.0” with rajanikanth and Akshay. Most of his 90s movies were trend Setting big budget movies compared to others from the same era. If you want to explore Shankar, try movies like Gentleman, Indian, Anniyan (with Vikram in it doing split personality character) and “I” (you have seen the weird trailer long back - again with Vikram).

It's a crazy song where the hero who is prabu deva comes to irritate the heroine with his friend...it's a Bharatnatyam dance center where they dance the local tamil dance....
This place is called Kalakshetra located at Chennai where they teach the cultural and traditional arts mainly Bharathanatyam. Not only Indians, ppl from all over the world come here and learn the art. This place is very diverse and anyone can learn the art. Thats why you are seeing white ppl in the background..This whole album has the best and still fresh music by ARR which was composed 26yrs back.

The first time when I saw this song..many years ago... I was like what's going on🙄 and just after that I was singing along with them 😂😂 Patti rap ❤
Please do one time with lyrics guys! You will die at laughing 😂😂😂😂
Wow awesome... Petta rap song , super dance prabudeva... We are all like very much
Omg i am waiting for this video sooooo longggggg
Prabhu Deva is the MJ of India and he has danced before MJ and he was impressed.
Whites there in the part of traditional dance group to learn indian uniques as like you guys.
We are very lucky (Indians)because we can enjoy different language , different culture many more .... kannada, Telugu , Tamil , Malayalam , Hindi etc etc 🌹🌹🥰🥰😊💐💐💐
Chanda Re (Vennilave Vennilave is the Tamil version)AR Rahman Prabhu Deva & Kajol. Pls check it
Prabhu deva you are brilliant awesome master genius .
You are a jem of India.
Now why do I have a feeling a Prabhudeva interview is on its way.... :P
Rahman sir not just introduced Rap to india but also add indian flavour beautifully in it....
almost 28 years old song and still fresh....
A R RAHMAN SIR Ahead of his time....
I think it is kalashetra where even 'white' girls come to learn barathanatyam south indian classical dance.. he is basically disrupting the dance class in the video with a local song and dance and hence she is pissed
It is Kalakshetra
What is south indian classical dance ?
@@standbyme-wk6hq bharatanatyam - Tamilnadu, Mohiniyattam - Kerala, Kuchipudi - Andhra... there are also others
This Petta Rap looks new to Tamil people also on that time. Prabhu Deva brought something new. We really enjoyed that time.
Guys u should check out "MASTHANA MASTHANA" next , the speed and isolation in that song 🤤
