Hi Dan;
I worked with my father for nearly 3 decades, he was a brilliant engineer with your similar sense of humor 😊. What he would advise is that you build a simple “gallos” that extends out the window of that upper floor. Using block-n-tackle, an I hook, rope and a boat cleat, you could pulley everything up on a simple platform ....
I wish I could send you a drawing, but if you see Amury (spelling?) at the party tonight... run it by him and his dad. Oh; and by the way... “old people” know a good deal about fabricating something out of nothing. You need to surround yourself with a plethora of “old-geezers.” They rock!!!
That’s what we did on a a lot of jobs. Back in the day that really wasn’t anything else.
Sounds similar to the dismantled hoist system Billy Petherick found in the attic of the convent.
We used two blocks to haul up buckets of concrete to the second floor . we had a skinny guy we used as a counter weight lol
Yah but this is about a burnt out building that has been abandoned for over 40 years . A water tank on the very top that has been there for 120 years .
Close: Amaury.
OK Dan, I think we need to revisit the blue safety helmet again ... with all those stones just sitting there by the grace of god ... I hope your guardian angle does not get distracted !!!
Nice pointing !!!
He should not be using a ladder as a working platform for demo and brick laying. Scaffold needed!
Lol 😂
Take a closer look . Those rocks are at least 8 feet away when they fell . Nothing to be nervious about . Trust me he is got every thing to lose if he gets hurt .
I am already upset by his recklessness!
😱
Yes Dan, you should be wearing a helmet and eye protection when you are having those blocks fall from above your head!
She’s right Dan❤
Not to worry it might knock some sense into him or knock him senseless........
And lest we forget, filtration masks of any kind, including the good one he has, DO NOT WORK on men unless they are clean-shaven. They cannot maintain a seal to force the air intake through the filters because of facial hair. I had that and other health and safety things beaten into me during four years of hell working at a nuclear power plant.
Dan quite honestly I am happy to see no further story above the level you all are working at. Cannot wait to see a roof covering the top of Chateau as I would hate to see the winter😢 weather damaging all your hard work you completed. Please tell us that the roof is your next project.
Ware a helmet Dan we want you to be around for another day!🫣👷🏻♂️⚒️
Taking out that old lintel was a bit of an nail biting moment. 🤪Dare Devil Dan😜
As Dan’s work progresses, I sincerely hope that the goal to get a … temporary/ semi-permanent roof on the whole structure may be a possibility before the arrival of winter? I cannot believe the strides that Dan has made to restore each level of flooring in such a relatively short period of time. This work ethic of Dan’s really reassures me that he may well do it. And all of this work has been achieved while he built the yurt! I am so glad he finally has a … sort of … proper place to live on site. And while all of this is happening, Dan’s positive attitude never flags! And this is why we all remain steadfast viewers of his vlog.
And another milestone at 265K subs. Just 14-15 days since he hit 250K. Dan should be enormously proud!
Odd milestone number :)
You're right. I was kinda suggesting a growth of 15000 subs in 15 days - pretty good achievement in my books. Cheers
@@boydtucker9786 ahhhh. I gotcha! He absolutely should!!
Yay 🎉🎉😅dear Fans you have done it with your Subscription. Share with your friends, who doesn't want to see Dan working this huge miracle😂🎉
It's the way we work. If someone starts a project, the more impossible the better obviously, and they just stay at it, and take each step as it comes it begins to bring people to them. No matter what it is, we will eventually gravitate to a person who stands by their commitments and proves that anything is possible if you just believe in it. And the French too assume that by default, anything is possible. France is your place Dan. And it's your time. Congratulations on making this happen. 🏰
OMG scaffolding Dan scaffolding. Love that shot from the outside where he's blowing out dust. Dan goes the extra step for cool shots!
Weld a socket over the axle of the crank shaft and use an electric impact wrench to turn the shaft. Much quicker, safer and easier to do than cranking endlessly. Wear a safety helmet too, regardless.
I’ve been thinking how we could electrify this!!! Good idea 👍🏻
I came to the comments to suggest the same!
@@cjm6271me too
And tie your shoe laces 😅
Chateau-tastic ! 👍
Oh Dan, I had to hold my breath when you took those bricks out.. 😱
Me too, I was worried it would jenga all over 😅
I was sitting five thousand miles away visualizing the angle of fall and his proximity to it...nail biting indeed!
Binge watched all 139 episodes of the Chateau over one weekend, At least I'm up to date! One video a day from down on, plus all hundreds of other channels I follow. Well done Dan on the 272k subs as of 21/08/23.
It’s shocking to see how loose the cement - or is it lime? - between the bricks and stones is. It looks as though a stiff brush is all that’s needed to completely dismantle the entire wall. I must say I was VERY WORRIED when he was shaking the red bracket to pull the lintel out. I half expected the entire wall to tumble down on Dan’s head !!!😢
Agree. It looks like he is putting lipstick on a pig. No strength in those walls. But I am no expert. Wonder if any real construction experts might weigh in and enlighten us?
welcome to the channel... :)
@@marylyon1230 Yes. I’m no expert either. But I would struggle to sleep with such weak walls…. giving me nightmares.
Me too.
Hi Friends, so if you were not aware, the Building has suffered through a massive fire that gutted the interior. The heat also affected the interior bricks, reducing the lime to sand. The exterior bricks seem to be holding well( though I'm not an expert nor onsite, just my humble, minor bricklaying experience. It scared the hell out of me too, but if the exterior bricks were damaged, there wouldn't BE ANY structure left!
Taking that steel lintel down on that hand-crank gave me the jitters as I was sure the granite blocks above looked very iffy up there. No helmet again - although if one of those blocks comes down, a helmet won't really help. Saying all of that, I am holding my breath every time Dan is up top - marvellous stuff even if that mortar looks slurped on.
really "marvellous" would be, if he finally will be unhurted or alife...
It's mental that in the time it takes to watch the vid, 5k views and 1k likes,, awesome, well done, you're all doing a fantastic job 👍
Another heart-in-mouth video. Don't know how much more she can take!
This episode freaked me out. I was certain the top of that wall (over your head) was going to come down like an avalanche. You are a lucky, lucky man!!!
He is a blessed man with many, many talents! ❤️
Don’t worry the whole building will collapse one day, extremely bad building practice being carried out. This work should be fine under controlled conditions. Not an amateur diy builder, who knows more about ice cream the wall structural strengths.
Nick not only great worker but USES protective gear. I thought with the scaffolding I could breath again, seems like once again I have to practice holding my breath and not yelling watch out. Take care and Dan well done
"well done"?
thank GOD!
That upper wall must be completely demolished and properly rebuilt. To support a new roof, it needs a good and solid foundation. Just filling in the gaps makes it look good, but it's a huge safety hazard and I'm sure it's not up to code.
This is the part I love watching you do, as with the farmhouse, so much effort went into doing it right, a learning process, a lot of hard work, up and down, but you seem to love doing it, it shows in the workmanship and you can actually see the progress...well done...!
DanVinci!!! Be damn careful!!!!
Nice looking work as usual Dan! I have two suggestions for you, do with them what you will:
1: Chuck the axle of the crank handle on your lift into a drill, you will save yourself a lot of work just getting the forks to the correct height.
2: Strap your hoist to a short piece of beam that you can clamp to your lift forks. Then you can go to full extension once and just push a button to lift loads of brick, mortar etc. Just my 2 cents.
Wisdom is worth buckets of Gold! You are a true friend 🙌
What he needs to do is hire a pro for the day so that they can go over his entire workflow. When he's removing material he'll touch it 6 times before removal is complete. Watching him sweep the floor and then bring down more material on it is just crazy. That little hoist he had before was so slow. He mixes mortar way away from where he needs it. Hauls bricks a few at a time. He's incredibly inefficient. He's go a lot of heart and passion but he needs a pro to show him how to work more efficiently.
That crank is PAINFUL. There has to be a way to jury rig a motor to turn it!!!! The walls are going to look so fabulous!!
just use a drill
It is used to fill out the video time slot watching it cranking away.
@@claudefournier4289I mentioned that in a previous video, hopefully he will catch on to the idea...
Came here to say the same-- need an electric crank!
The lifter is used quite extensively in the UK also, always manually, so there must be a reason, and it's better than hand balling things, like previous, a little time saves an awful lot of effort and because he doesn't wear a helmet either and he's two feet further back!?!
Good morning, lovely to see the the resilience you have with this project it is amazing to see this beautiful house being restored.I have enjoyed the journey with you.
Great progress.... Hope Stephanie doesn't regret "Dan the gardener," happy 50th when she is only 48.😮 Clever!!!!!!!!!!
She turned 50 today…probably never turn 51 though 🤫
@@Tony-InLosAngelesShe turned 48, the running joke is that she's 50.
Yes I confirmed it on the net she is 50 ……..…..........................................sorry 48!?!
This video made me so nervous. I am so glad you are safe. Your ingenuity and craftsmanship is amazing.
the ammount of love you are putting into this place day after day is inspiring.
We love you Dan!
You should be supporting the structure above the windows when removing lintels and adding new brick work. You could have all of the structure collapse on you. You are taking an unnecessary risk. Even using elevator to support it would help.
Now that you have reached the more precarious and unstable portion of the chateau walls, safety will be more vital. You have shown reasonable care (even if we were holding our breath on occasion) so I will continue to cheer you on as you begin the arduous wall/lintel repairs.👍🏻🙏🏻🤗
What strikes me, Dan, is the incredible workmanship and attention to detail the first double- brick build required. And now you are connected emotionally with those artisans, architects and the man with the original vision. I would like to know more about this man.
Good comparison at the 6:35 for the undone window, to a newly plastered window. We all enjoy the Dan Preston Show. And who knows, maybe some day: Sir Dan Preston. That 60 tons of gravel will erase a LOT of mud. Smart.
Sir?
❤❤
Another brick in the wall ,little by little it's getting done!! Have fun at the birthday party 🎉, be safe and we'll see ya tomorrow!!
Looking better already Dan...well done 👍.
I love how the 'new' wall looks! Much nicer then plaster board and flat straightness.
An avererage 100 likes per minute ain't too shabby, Dan!
Dan and his amazing discoveries. His joy is ever refreshing. ❤😊
The lifting of the manual forklift was epic !!! 🤣🤣🤣 Sir (I think you deserve to be called "Sir"), I'm finishing my first restauration and already bought the 2nd ruin. Always I'm asking myself WHY on earth I didn't made it on youtube !!! Congratulations from France, thank you for our historic monuments, for your passion and for teaching me how to rebuild walls (I'll have to do it soon on my 2nd house) !!
I love those little details. It kind of reminds me of finding some little treasure that you didn’t expect
Quel courage et quelle détermination il vous faut , vraiment vous êtes extraordinaire 😊
qu'est ce que veut dire "courage" contre "securité"?
la situation vraiement était dangereux!
Courageux ou inconscient ?
Dan you should get a few of those hard plastic slides that people at building sites use to throw rubble in and fall down at the foot of the Chateau.
Saves alot of time and your back
ABSOLUTELY LOVE your Vlogs but really wish they were Longer. ❤from Montreal
Nice log splitter. The patching on the wall looks great.
So happy Dan is wearing heavy work boots rather than the canvas sneakers.
Send your post to the woman winging about my exact comment.
Nothing fazes you Dan, I am just in awe of your dedication and love for your chateau. My heart stops at some of the things you attempt lol, but I still watch. Amazing 🤗
He just works so hard on it ❤ it’s inspiring
Dan if ya make up a mini pallet, ya could rest your bucket & bricks on your lift much safer & be able to load more onto your lift. Enjoy the party
To add to the plethora of suggestions - get the water well pump working as a high priority. A working water hose would be incredibly useful for what your doing. May also want to put a cement mixer on the top floor with all the masonry work to be done there.
I thought the same but you are your own man. Dan, I admire so much how your self taught kills are turning you not only into a master builder but also into a master problem solver. You keep having so many great, unconventional ideas to accomplish your vision. Always following the clues the chateau gives you. Meanwhile Nick and Cameron are also exited how it all takes shape and gladly take part in this excellent adventure. You are all respectfully paying homage to this grand old lady waking her up from her 100 year sleep.
This takes the SCARRY award. The whole bit! Good luck, Dan. Enjoy teasing Stephanie at the birthday celebration!🎉❤😂😮😮😮
Excited to see what's going on!
Keep up the great videos. You're one of my favorite channels. I have seen all your videos. Can't wait till you get a roof on. I hope you do it before Winter. I'm looking forward to seeing the well get cleaned out. You just have to see if you can put a electric motor on that manual hoist. Maybe take off the handle and attach a electric drill. You also need a high speed hoist to bring up bricks and mortar to the top.
A tad scary watching this episode. As someone else said you have one hell of a guardian angel. Enjoy the 50th birthday party 🥳 😅
Happy 48th Birthday to Stephanie .. Dan Daily you’re on the naughty step .. again 😉🤦♀️😆
But in 4 years time, he'll still be announcing 50.
I know he can only wind her up for 2 more years then he'll have to think of something else.
Your secret 🤐 so nice to see everyone working towards happiness. I wish you all love and joy
I agree his private life is his own.
Glad u have new machines to help u get the work going. Saves u a lot of steps. Thanks for sharing. 😊😊😊
Stone masons will use wood, sometimes lead to act as a spacer to keep the weight of large stones from pushing the mortar out of joints. This also allows for adding additional courses before the mortar has set.
That is really smart! I love how Dan notices every little thing and shares it with us! He is an amazing guy! My frustration is that I can’t run by after work and do some “gofer” work for him in my spare time because Miles and a pesky ocean lies between us...
And why would I work for Dan? Because he is so honorable and worthy! 😊🙌. Okay, okay.... his sense of humor is just the tops! But above all; this guy has true vision, and he is a prime example of faith & belief because he keeps his vision. 🙌
He makes all the phone calls, runs all the errands, sources all the materials, carries all the loads, engineers his vision, cooks his own food, and installs his own potty 🚽, is his own security system, does his own research, AND makes time to support his friends, AND produces and tapes a most excellent DAILY vlog!!! A-A-AMAZING!! 🙌👍🏼❤️ He has changed my way of looking at my life ❤️ And reminds me how important it is to laugh every day! Sweet! ❤️ What a great guy! ❤️ A CEO/CFO who lives with grace ... ❤️ AND, I didn’t even list everything 😮💗 I have nothing but RESPECT & AWE 🙌. Blessings!
The pictures I seen of the old roof, could be recreated with lighter materials and still give the same look! What I worry about is time, more rain will do much more damage!
Careful Dan. I am holding tight while watching stone falling down.
Dan my man. Very good job of the wall rendering. Camron stacking the wood fantastic. Nick getting ready for the delivery of the gravel. Slowly but surely the work goes on. Until tomorrow. Take care and stay safe. Love ya 🍺🍺🍺🙏🌈👍🌹😇🇺🇸❤️🌞🥤
Dan you are working a miricle on that place, well done!
Oh my goodness I’m watching you through my fingers dreading what I’m going to see like a child watch a scary movie and I’m holding my breath. I’m not going to loose my temper and say anything. I thank you for wearing a mask when you used the blower. One other thing is all I’m going to say is . . . gloves! Thank you. May you all please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩
Super smooth, delicate work removing the old lintel Dan. Respect.
Actually this ranks in the top 5 of Dan's least safe and worst building practices videos, but he lives to fight another day and we will watch another day.
@@ji8044 That is some dangerous work. I'm thinking I would have braced those big rocks so if something bad happened they would fall outside. I have seen people replace lentils and the whole thing craters side ways and comes crashing down. He is highly skilled or lucky.
@@jtwood4925 Dan is a brilliant filmmaker and so he knows that doing things in the most dangerous way possible draws in the biggest audience.
@@ji8044 not to mention tons of comments which primes the YT algorithm for more views.
@@jtwood4925 I kept thinking, "Helmet, Dan....You need to wear a helmet." There's no price on safety.
I hope you will have time to make some kind of roof before winter comes 🤞🤞
I think that's his plan
Atleast on that wing. The others will have to wait.
Yes me too
Yes that wing first so he can repair the inside over Winter, then the other Wing next year, and the Middle section after that (But Dan might choose the middle section second as he purchased the scaffold for it, I assume that it will be a temporary roof at present as he doesn't have the time to do a permanent one!?!
Every day is so exciting at this stage. You are literally chipping away the unstable and rebuilding. Looking good!
Well Dan I am getting quite impatient to see each episode and your progress on the chateau restoration. I will have to admit you have got me absolutely enthralled watching and waiting for more. You seem to have great problem solving skills and don’t let any task faze you. Just keep up the good work and best of luck.
Use an impact drill on the crank at your lift :)
Yeah, had the same thought. Would be much easier.
Why impact? Why not a standard battery-powered drill?
Yeah that’s what I was thinking! Make some adapter thingy on the crank handle to mount on your power drill :) saves your shoulders and wrists a little bit.
Def not impact, mechanism not designed for continous shocks, use a drill.
Excellent job, yet again, its exciting to see more lentils being done and more gravel, can't wait, Nick is so masterful with his machinery, it'll look so amazing, and I have to mention that the grounds are looking good . So cleaned up and firewood to boot. Very impressive 😊❤
as long as there don't happen a bad accident, it is "excellent".. .?
really?🤯
I don’t usually comment but the arm chair quarterbacks need to chill and let Dan do his thing! Negativity be gone!
Amen! But the comments make money, so keep ‘em coming.
They drive me nuts!
@@Sgirl me too!! I see the structural engineer comments are making a come back - scattered among the hundreds of use a drill to power the lift and the perennial safety gear warnings - but he's smart, takes no notice and lets them keep coming.
Utter patience is your super power!!!
Really like seeing the little wedges. Your cement work looks so good. Thank you.
Lots of practice at the farm and Château LaLande.
👋🏻Good days work Dan. Have fun at the birthday party. 🎉 See ya tomorrow Dan👋🏻
Dan is removing the loose rock and lime and applying new lime so the wall will be more secure. Nick and Cameron are still cutting and stacking the firewood. Dan has 60 tons of gravel coming monday to surround the Chateau and make the ground better to drive on and look better!
Wow, you got DNA of the house when it was built! The building may be much older than told and you got the key to the answer in those little picks of wood.
Love the wood shims in between the granite stones. It’s very cool to think of the people who came before you whom stood right there when the chateau was new trying to build a strong ,straight wall, just like you .
That's a lot of climbing with bricks and mortar. Enjoy the party. See you Tomorrow!
If we're lucky!?!
He is got that pully thing .
You know That’s Right!
I was actually wondering how many steps he has made from the start. 🤔
I’m becoming addicted to the “daily Dan”. Can’t sleep til Dan has posted so I know he’s safe (for the day). Slowly, slowly Dan. You don’t look as exhausted as last week. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Makes Dan an unsafe boy. (Well I’m old everyone looks young.) I’m loving every aspect of this and look forward to (however many years) of restoration. Bit of a catch up Needed Dan. Yurt, dogs (noggin and Beam) etc. remember to take care of yourself.
Dan, you have a POWERFUL Guardian Angel! ~ Debbi
Dan’s guardian angel is getting a work out!
I think he requires a whole team!😇
there is an army of guardian angels surrounding Dan and his teammates
Amen to that! I was thinking the same thing.
That super winch is an amazing contraption for this job, I am so glad you have it! I can see the difference from when you started by hauling pails of brick and lime by hand going up and down the ladders. It is now like having an assistant :)
You need a bricklayers hod .labourerers used one to carry bricks up ladders & such it will fit on your Genie between the tynes & give much more capacity & safety as they cannot fall out. A hod is comprised of a three sided box with a handle underneath i am sure you can find pics somewhere to make one . Genie idustries invented the lift you have for rock & roll lighting as a heavy version of the socalled windup tower . If you use a spray for wetting down your work before you start you will have a much better saturation without pouring most of the water off . Make a platform with two holes or more through which you pass a ratchet strap to fit on the tynes of your lift to put buckets & such on or even a wheelbarrow full with cement just ratchet strapped onto the tynes . You could of course strap your electric winch to this & wind it above your working height & just winch stuff up without all that windy wind every time . greets from Berlin .Ekzo. PS if you put gravel down where you work with the Genie you wil have big problems moving it around so i suggest you wait until you are done with it .
Ever since Dan started repointing & replacing brick and stone many months ago, there has been much advice for Dan on getting a brick hod ( he will use so many bricks) to work more efficiently. And also a sprayer type portable container to use for wetting down work. Hope Dan is able to get these items in near future, as he's got much of the same work to do in every section of the chateau.
The wall looked great Dan, hope you enjoyed the party.
That looks great, Dan ❤🇦🇺
A euro pallet would work well on the lift as a platform for the bricks, stones and mortar. Pillars looking good mate.
Waiting with anticipation for your next video. Your videos, Seans and Billy's, are the only blogs i am watching at the moment. I like yours the most right now. Thank you for sharing your amazing project with us.
Wow Dan, it's moving along nicely and it's so exciting to watch. This is pure entertainment and you certainly deserve huge praise for keeping us in focus!
The amount of work you have done and the amount of work you still have to do are both mind boggling
Basement: toys, lift going up: Ground floor: kitchen appliances, going up: 1st floor: men’s & woman‘s clothing, going up: 2nd floor: furnishing, going up 3rd floor: haberdashery & bedding, going up: 4th floor: Nick‘s no fuss cafeteria, Dan‘s blue sky restaurant, going down
Ooh Grace brothers. Very British response for which I thank you. It made me smile (and a quick giggle - dogs not …. Feline ☺️☺️)
There is no mention of the new alfresco loo / WC in your text ☺️
Well, I'm free😅
Some of you guys are so funny . I just enjoy looking at the comments .
I'v seen DAn wear a white T-shirt and never get it dirty, so I don't worry about fallen debree .
I love the contrast between Dan and Billy Petherick. Every time I see a concrete mixer on either channel I just smile. Then watching Dan dump 20L of water on the masonry and watching Simon hit it the chimney with the spray bottle. It just cracks me up (yes I know they are very different jobs).
Hey, Dan! The mortar work looks really good! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🥰
Imagen...waking up 3 o'clock in the morning, and there is a new "Dan-the-Chateau-man" video out....
2 minutes in I have to stop the video, read all the comments, laugh like a crazy person and then watch the rest of the video
The comments are particularly one note today ... all about removing handles and using a drill 🙄
Hey Dan, that lift can carry huge steal beams, so why don't you create a wooden pallet that will sit on top of the lift portion so you can stack more bricks and buckets on top of the wood and not worry about it falling through the middle of the fork. That was really cool to see the little builder hack that they used though, thanks for sharing that with us! And again, I've got a mirror everybody else's words... Personal protection dude. Wear your helmet and wear your goggles. We only say it cuz we love you! Be safe out there and we'll see you soon!
Happy Nick and Cameron are helping and it is all go. Love the lift it so much better than watching you carry it up a ladder and wobble the bucket. Amazing the shims held even with the fire. Please where goggles or protective glasses all that plaster on your face. Also enjoy the Birthday 🎉. And....I will see you tomorrow. Tons of gravel mind boggled.
You do such a fantastic job Dan have fun at the party I guess we all know who's it is see you tomoza🎉😊
