Did you try restarting the device or anything? Just wondering because no one else has mentioned the lagging issue. It’s definitely worth mentioning if this is a thing.
I'm curious if you actually installed the latest update? And if so did you try rebooting? Did you leave it plugged in the first time overnight so it could index all your books? My guess is that you didn't allow time for the device to finishing it's initializing features. It was likely trying to update your library to the new device at the same time you're trying to open books. I think if you let it fully index overnight and reboot it before your next use you will find all those issues you complain about gone.
