    Solo: Did you catch the Dice. A Star Wars story.

      Shhhhh! Don’t give Disney any ideas! A movie about Han Solo’s dice would make a terrible movie.

    Guys, it doesn't matter if you like it or not. It's about the message to Disney. Fans boycott it to prove that we will not deal with Kathleen Kennedy and Ruin Johnsons BS. That is why I will not pay to see it.

    • @chrisolivo6591

      Pwiest Playing Exactly, as the message was sent as this movie severely underperformed this weekend by 50 million less then previous estimates. They pissed on the hardcore fans and are left with general fans who are probably on to the next blockbuster.

      Pwiest Playing yup. I am 100% with this. I could care less who likes it. So these reviews seem silly... who are they for? What to talk about? Half the fans are sitting home and the rest are seeing it.

    I don’t think Disney will make another Star Wars movie as bad as The Last Jedi, but unless Kennedy, and Johnson are fired, I doubt they will make any more really good ones either....😐

    Well it was a dicey proposition. They rolled the dice, and committed to playing Russian roulette with the fans, and they lost. The fans are done. Thank you for your review.

    Spot on review, you tell it as it is no bullshit just honest reviewing from the heart, Disney just milking the Star Wars brand, when George Lucas sold the rights away the saga lost it's heart.
    First time I not seen a Star Wars related movie upon opening day release & this from my cousin & I who are huge Star Wars fans for over 30 yrs, we got most the novels, the audiobooks, played the games but The Last Jedi has tarnished our love for the franchise (We both loathe & detest that abomination of a movie) & Solo while nowhere near as bad as Last Jedi seems hardly to set the Star Wars universe on fire, it's simply a easy watch by the numbers with no substance.
    Kathleen Kennedy needs to go & Disney need to get someone like Frank Darabont in charge of the Star Wars universe, let's have a Kenobi or Vader film & stick Rian Johnsons trilogy were the sun don't shine & instead do the Knights Of The Old Republic trilogy with Revan ,a character who is complex & has dabbled as a Jedi & Sith with Peter Jackson writing & directing.
    Well that's what I want to see for future movies not these fluffy easy watches with no substance, lets get the heart & soul put bacķ into Star Wars & make going to see the films at the cinema a event movie watch experience once again.

    This movie has zero appeal to me. Based on the trailer, and many reviews agreeing with yours, this is yet another pointless movie without an actual thought out script. Disney probably have a 100 monkeys in a basement writing new Star Wars scripts, then they run the results through a computer that calculates a single script from that.
    This is not a problem of Disney pushing some form of political agenda (to many reviews of the latest movies tend to put the blame on SJW:s or Diversity). The problem is that they can't seem to produce CHARACTERS any more, or PLOTS, that hold water or are interesting. It is as if they just use the Star Wars universe as a background for lackluster action movies. The movies basically becomes sloppy for TV made Period Pieces. Tricking Star Wars fans to keep coming back...

    • @54tisfaction
      @54tisfaction 6 років тому +4

      No, that is just the people who don't like equality and diversity talking. I get that, they DO feel hectored and scolded by that agenda, so they tend to focus on these aspect being what's wrong with the franchise. And I also get the impression that Disney ARE trying to push this agenda. However, they do it in a very juvenile way, as if they are just trying to use these issues as a sales gimmic - or trying to paint the old conservative Disney corporation in a new ligth: "We love diversity! Look!"
      But that's not the real problem. Star Wars fans, regardless of how they feel about those issues, are reacting the same way all over the world:
      "What the hell was that?" "Why is this character acting this way?" "What!?! What the hell just happened?!?" "What the fuck are you doing?!?" "Oh, C'mon! That's not how the Force works!!!" Let's say you removed all the things that you would lable as "Liberal agenda" or "SJW" in the movies, and made all the characters white heterosexuals, mostly males. It would STILL be badly written characters, with poorly written plots that made no sense!
      A related problem is continuity. No matter that old characters from the original trilogy have been changed so that old fans cringe in their chairs and think "why is Luke acting this way, he wouldn't...". Just look at the change of the new characters between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. You will see that even those seem to have a personality change between the movies!
      I think this is a problem of the structure of how the studio is making these movies. There is no one person that has an idea about who these characters are, or how they will progress... They just shoot action sequenses, throw in a couple of gags, and lets Editing figure it out...
      That's my 2 cents.

    I boycotted this movie. Let me just say as a lifelong SW fan since 1977 who sees the movies multiple times in the theater, do you know how much they had to piss me off to force me to boycott? KK, JJ, RJ wouldn’t shut up about the SJW stuff and calling out fans for hating TLJ. The final nail in the coffin was that little brat Jon Kasdan Jr going on Twitter and digging in on his stupid Pando Calrissian comments. I honestly can’t give these people my money anymore, it’s enough. The bad box office lends me to believe I’m not the only one out there who feels this way.

    I really wish they would have cast Anthony Ingruber, the thing i dont find fair is that Kristian Harloff and many others off Collider were saying things like Ingruber just imitates Ford, and yet Alden had to have a acting coach anyway! So why couldnt they have given Ingruber the chance and simply given him a acting coach to help him along, cause i still feel Ingruber would have made a perfect Han.
    I agree Glover nailed it as Lando, but overall it is just becoming this superficial thing now these Starwars movies, just fun action filled movies, and anyone that says "well what more do you want, erm id like some "substance", some layers and to delve into mythology. It was just a story that didnt really need telling tbh. Its not bad way better than TLJ, no feminist or SJW crap evident, well there was that droid L3-37 who might as well have been called SJ-W cause she wouldnt shut the fuck up about all that droid equality.
    Id give Solo yeh, about the same 55% though, overall though Ron Howard is the guy i respect most about this particular movie, he was asked to come save this movie, and he salvaged the mess from Lord and Miller and did a great job so hats off to him. Oh and Enfys Nest was cool i liked that character, thats proper female empowerment right there, not like the Rey bullshit. I think the whole Han change of heart was more to show that he is what Qi'Ra described him as, genuinely a "good guy" at heart. But i think more than anything, it may have been that he remembers the struggle and life he had on Correllia i mean Corellia is a real shit-hole i never thought they would make it as bad as it was, and he said his father made the YT freighters and got laid off. So maybe he saw Enfys and her struggle against what the Crimson Dawn did to her people, and related to that.
    I hate the Maul cameo, if that is how they plan to tie it in, doing a Obi Wan movie, then thats real piss-poor fan service, using that fan favorite character just to help attract people to come see Solo. I though they plan to follow stories from Maul and the Black Sun from the comics. Cause when you see that Han's girlfriend is working for Darth Maul and his criminal syndicate, then Han heads off to work for Jabba, it kind of adds up. You could have Maul and Jabba the Hutt in a criminal underground war, with Han and Qi'Ra caught up in the middle of it, on opposing sides.
    But they really need to be careful introducing Darth Maul in a Han Solo anthology, because Han never came across any force sensitives by the time of ep4, he said to Luke that he doesnt believe in the force and never seen like the force in his travels across the galaxy. So yeh, Maul cameo in solo? cheap fan service.

      Maul was revealed to be alive in The Clone Wars tv series. Maul later died on Star Wars Rebels shortly before the events of episode 4.

    Very fair review, hit all the points i had reservations about. Esp casting ehrenreich when you have...Emilia is a one trick pony.glad Lando worked outeven though he looks nothing like Billy Dee. Yay for your Rogue One feelings ,the movie has hella holes and dead ends BUT as someone who caught "Star Wars"back in 1977 (not called ep4) in the theater. Rogue One captures the excitement we felt that heady summer day! Apollo 13 runs out of gas 2/3rds the way thru. ron howard!

    Anthony Ingruber is nowhere near the actor that Alden Ehrenreich is. In fact, Alden's performance as Han is one of the best things about this movie. Disagree completely.

    • @paulgnsn554
      @paulgnsn554 6 років тому +1

      Ingruber is a far better physical match, but I was quite happily surprised by Alden's performance. I really liked the movie and expected to hate it. Jon Kasdan's remarks probably stopped people from watching this movie. I felt the writing and humour was very true to the original Star Wars spirit and the character of Han Solo. After the abomination that was the last jedi, I totally understand why people wanted to give Lucasfilm a bloody nose, but I hope that once the boycott has passed and the point has been made, that people will discover this movie and actually enjoy it.

      I agree. I would love for Ingruber to have had the obvious acting chops for this role. But it didn't happen, and I don't know if he would have given a better performance anyhow. He might have been a more seamless transition to Ford, but for one reason or another, he didn't get the role. He's done some good voice acting - but I wish he'd been ready for this. I was surprised how much I liked Ehrenreich though.

    • @OptimusNiaa
      @OptimusNiaa 6 років тому

      You don't know that he wasn't ready. I mean, maybe he wasn't. But I see no proof that he wasn't ready. Just because he didn't get the part doesn't establish that he wasn't ready.

    • @paulgnsn554
      @paulgnsn554 6 років тому +1

      Wedge W I really like Ingruber but hand on heart...his appearance in age of Adeline was pretty stiff even though vocally he was very close. He didn't get many lines in the final cut of that film either which may be coincidence or not. That section could have merited more lines from him rather than the voice over they decided to use. He's becoming a great voice actor so the potential is there. But he's yet to appear in another high profile movie following on from that. I wanted him to be solo and wish he could have got the acting coach. But it didn't go that way. If he really is ready...may be he'll audition for Indiana Jones.

    I actually went into this movie expecting it to be bad. I have to admit though , that I really liked it. Yes, Alden didn't have Harrison's charm or delivery or presence but, who does?? Harrison defined the character so I thought the kid did ok. I agree though, Emilia was kind of boring. Overall I thought the film totally delivered on most levels. Yes, it wasn't perfect but it was exciting and fun. I think in a few years when people revisit this they will like it better. Thanks to the horrendous 'Last Jedi' most Star Wars fans are hating on Star Wars right now and just looking at the negatives.

  • @Number251137
    @Number251137 6 років тому +10

    Okay. Disney; stop with these origin stories. Just stop. You have already managed to hack off the majority of fans with the way that the original heroes have been handled (i.e: Han, Luke & Leia), and I'm not entirely sure how Episode IX is going to play out, but it's going to be have to be something extraordinary to rekindle any kind of enthusiasm in it (certainly from me personally).
    The best thing you could do is to create stories based on this new universe, rather than trying to re-tell old ones. There must be an endless wealth of source material to be harvested, worlds to explore, new threats from the outer rim to reveal - anything. You say you want to kill the past - well, stop focusing on it then! At this point, there is only one direction to go, and that is forward.
    Create a new legacy with new heroes and new stories. For me, I'm done with Star Wars as it is now, but you never know, if it's good enough, there's no reason why I couldn't buy-in to a fresh epic story that doesn't mis-handle all the heroes of old that I loved from the original trilogy.
    (Oh, and one other thing; please don't try and inject thinly-veiled political narratives into the movies. It really doesn't work.)
    Good luck!

    On the opening text, is it really worse than the wierd nothing accompanied by a sudden, blaring orchestra hit used in Rogue One? They do need to let you know when-about each story is taking place, no? I had no problem with the blue non-crawl. Everything else you mentioned, though... yeah. Not good. Especially the contrast between Alden and Donald's performances. Every time Han and Lando were on screen at the same time, I kept being reminded how much better it would have been if Anthony Ingruber had been there instead.

    Disney gets people in the theater because "Star Wars" is in the title. If they didn't, would anyone pay to see Solo? Would critics be kissing Ruin Johnson's ass over the travesty that was TLJ? They sort of seem like Star Wars movies but should have left Luke, Han and Leia alone and truly started fresh. And get people that actually like Star Wars to write the script.

    There is no other way to look at L3-37 but as a parody since it was established by Obi-Wan in the prequels that droids do not have the ability to think. They just fallow the logic in their programming. They are not a living entity and to ask for rights will be like talking about Siri's rights in our cellphones. By the way that program could be change at any time to mimic a different personality.

    0:28 - better then TLJ... absolutely!
    2:18 - Hanisms: things, actions, phrases relating to or being relatable in association with Han Solo
    I feel like for our first ever view of another major planet/city... Coronet/Corellia was WAY underplayed. I want more Corellian: brandy, blood strips, Cor Sec, etc!!!
    Based on how well Lando was performed by Glover... we should have had a *Calrissian: A Star Wars Story* and tried Solo on a different time around.
    I feel like the lingering on Enfys Nest and her gang should have been more directed of an effort in a separate movie called *Rebellion: A Star Wars Story*.
    Between Rebels, Ahsoka (book), Rogue One... there could be the spy/action/thriller movie that would make up a broad story of how the Rebel Alliance was built.
    I think putting Maul in at the end of the movie is a little harsh on the casual fans.... unless you followed TCW or Rebels you still think Maul is dead in the bottom of a pit on Naboo.

    • @TravelersWarden
      @TravelersWarden  6 років тому

      100% concur about focusing on Lando vs Han. It's harder to focus on Han like this, too, since we all know where his story arc heads. It takes away from any real sense of suspense in the film, whereas Lando is largely a mystery. I also agree that Corellia was underplayed - I was disappointed that it wasn't more built up.

  • @alexandersison2030

    Maul can't really meet Obi-Wan again because they've already covered that final meeting in Star Wars Rebels. Unless they have them bump into each other for a quick duel, or Maul sends minions. But even so, Maul can't really die because his death is reserved for Rebels. Unless they retell it from Obi-Wan's perspective in the possible film.

    I totally enjoyed this movie and I'm glad I watched it in a good theatre. Only criticism I really have is the bad picture quality in the beginning of the film but the effects are amazing, better than in any other SW movie and I didn't feel like any acting was bad. The character of Han is still very young in this story and I had no problem imagining how he would turn into what we know from the earlier movies. Rogue One was good but just way too dark and serious, almost depressive, same thing with Revenge of the Sith for me personally by the way. The original Star Wars trilogy back then was good popcorn action movie entertainment, lots of merchandise and kids toys included, that's why I feel like Solo is much more true to the original idea of SW than Rogue One. Makes me wonder - when did people start taking all this SW shit so damn seriously? I mean discussing smallest details like these stupid dice and such, as if these were any real "problems" this movie has, that we just cannot get over. Can't we just sit and watch the movie for it's story, cool visual effects, excellent sound effects and well presented characters without questioning all this stuff too much and whining all the time because it's not exactly the same idea of SW that we had constructed in our own narrow minds?

    I don’t get how anyone can enjoy rogue one? I’m not trying to be a troll, but if you say solo was missing a heart then rogue one was birthed by an emotionless demon. Did anyone care of those characters in rogue one? It was a bland, dirty, emotionless movie. Please someone explain to me how rogue one is good?

    It was really boring and like you said, predictable. This is the oldest franchise in terms of sequelization and expansive universe in filmmaking history. Is it too big for its own good? Probably. Disney clearly cares little about this classic. I'm stunned and not surprised. I think it will survive as a downgraded modern fanbase that is younger, and will lose the older original fans.

    Hi, watched solo because it started showing on sky tv
    Pretty much hit nail on head as the movie is not terrible but very forgettable
    I naturally compared to Rogue One which i watched multiple times which was at least 1 star better than solo
    Think most fans would say thay would not have asked for this movie which shows disconnect at Disney re Star Wars
    Had the movie like you said focused on something better like Maul or something else it would have had potential

    Can't have a Maul and Obi-Wan film. Would love to see that, but it can't happen at this point. Clone Wars and Rebels touched way too much on Maul for that kind of film to make sense. It conflicts with continuity way too much. Would love to see it, but It can't happen.

  • @atomicdancer

    I think audiences are generally not interested in prequels or origin stories for pre-existing movie characters. As viewers we want to see what happens next, not rewind the storyline and watch more backstory. A compelling prequel or origin story needs a *very* assured storyteller to pull it off (Batman Begins works really well, for example).
    A young Han Solo story is definitely not something that audiences or fans cared about seeing. Because, as viewers and listeners who have seen and heard a thousand stories in our lives, we instinctively know when watching 'Star Wars' that what happens to Han Solo *after* he meets Luke and Old Ben in Mos Eisley is so much more interesting and important than whatever had happened to him before that moment.

    • @TravelersWarden

      yeah, but he only had 3 months to do it, so i cut him some slack. Rian Johnson had 2 years, so no excuses for him.
      Solo didnt character assassinate any of the classic characters, but it didnt add anything we didn't know or needed to know already. I can watch the OT for what it is with or without this movie existing.
      If Solo had better pacing and you took that L3 droid out entirely then it would have been a decent movie i think. As it is it's just average. Thankfully they had the good grace to kill L3 off.

    To me, "Dryden Voss" sounds suspiciously similar to "Dryden Fossa", a character from a fantasy-themed anime from the '90s called "Escaflowne". Dryden Fossa was a wealthy merchant steeped in intrigue, and a collector of rare things -- the first we see of him is in front of a tank in his estate containing a mermaid. "Voss" also sounds suspiciously like it would be pronounced "Fossa" by the Japanese.
    Dryden Fossa from "Escaflowne" + the "Dresden Files" character you mentioned = Dryden Voss? Wouldn't be surprised if they're ripping off cult tv shows *and* anime now, if I'm honest.

    I hated what little of it i could watch. They ruined a character thay i cared about and turned the franchise into a propaganda machine.
    Worse than the question of is it good Star wars as a brand was turned into that we were forced to either support or shun.
    In a country that was so heavily devided politically, Kathleen Kennedy foolishly made the choice to once again cause a divide and our killer instincts took over.
    Lower your expectations was the proviso audience members were told to take, and in a brand like Star Wars that should exceed our expectations is in and of itself an admission of its failure.

    My favorite part of the film was the credit roll signalling the end. Han Solo was painted as a love-smitten fool. Lando was painted as a toaster-fucking drag queen. Does the Millennium Falcon need a walk-in closet full of Lando's costume pieces, or was that added so Emilia could change clothes on the way to Kessle? L3...more SWJ crap: #AllDroidsForEqualRights. "Better than TLJ." That's a pretty low bar. A lot of reviewers

    because they were relieved it isn't as bad as TLJ.
    Forgettable and predictable = boring. "Solo" is perfectly meh,
    which is actually worse than being bad in an interesting way
    (like "The Room").

  • @notatthistime3867
    @notatthistime3867 6 років тому

    The movie was actually long and boring. Too many of the scenes were too dark and hated straining my eyes to make things out. I'm tried of the film industry thinking in order to have a movie that has a dark tone that you literally have to shoot the movie with little to no lighting. The content makes a movie dark, not hitting the dimmer switch on set.
    I noticed how most people are overlooking how they actually ruined Chewbacca as a character. It's one thing to want to eat a Porg, but in this movie they have him eating sentient, self-aware beings. Are there any original characters left they need to ruin?
    It was lame that they suddenly had to make hyperfuel a thing in order to bail out the Last Jedi and take away a criticism from that movie.
    Then there are the countless little things that didn't make sense. Like how Han got his last name when later in the movie we learned he knew who his father was so that would mean he should know his last name?
    Disneywars is really aimed at the low IQ fan who just really cares about CGI explosions and eating popcorn while doing so. There are no rewatchable moments in this movie. It's a shame that you can no longer use words like Magical, Special, Thrilling, Epic, Exciting, etc when talking about a Star Wars movie.

    Disliked or Meh

    2. Was the Lando/L3 dying scene suppose to make me reach for a tissue? Really? Although, Landos pain did make me wonder…was there somethin, somethin going on? No Lando no!
