I never played Raiders before but really liked the theme. ie. Blood Rage is my favorite game. I love what I have seen of the old art but think I like the art in Scythia even more. Great review. I ended up picking up this game and looking to get it to the table.
The theme is so cool... art style is so epic and gritty!! The solo is on point!! And I can get all the expansion mechanics from north sea in one base box!! Mine!! Gimme gimme!!
I have this game with a nice wood insert, all sleeved, with the metal coins. I absolutely love this game! Much better than Raiders of the North Sea IMO.
Any reason you prefer Raiders of the North Sea over this? It seems that this has most of the expansions included in the base game (horses=armor, wound tokens from FoF, quests from HoH), plus includes variable player powers and animals. I much prefer the art in the North Sea game, but would like to know what makes RoTNS better?
Love raiders. For me this is going to be a pass. It's too similar even with a few changes and, sorry to say, I'm not too keen on the art. I'll just wait on Viscounts coming soon and whatever Shem and Sam develop in the "Kingdom" series. Appreciate Shem trying a different theme. I was interested at first and thought I would warm up to the art but just can't.
Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. I vastly prefer this art to anything the Mico has done. And that's not to say I don't like his work, I actually do.
That's what i love about this community - everyone has a differing opinion but it's all good because we can all enjoy games anyways! I highly prefer this art, haha! :D
I really liked the "Worker Exchange" mechanic of the North sea game. So I would lie this one. The set up is a bit fussy but not too bad once I had performed it. You are so right about the expansions for North Sea - which I have - so, as big a fan I am of Shem Phillips, I will have to pass. Thanks for the review.
I love Raiders of the North Sea, so this is way too similar and the changes made are worse in my opinion. But the real reason this is a pass for me, is the ugly artwork and the theme. OMG is that board ugly. the big advantage of the North Sea Saga and the West Kingdom Saga always was the consistent artwork and iconography. but this too much of a break of it. This game will split the fans of the other trilogies.

As soon as it releases in europe I get the deluxe version with the metal gorgon coins.

If the straight-forward scheme deck is your #1 solo mechanism, you should try Energy Empire with the PnP solo AI deck.

By attacking down the board where there are first grey workers to snaffle, then red. Crew Up and get raiding

I don't think you can use the word "unique" in reference to a mechanic used in other games. That kind of defeats the meaning of the word.
I think you can have a unique approach to a common mechanic. That was what I was referring to.
