In this video I wanted to dive into a clip of one of my favorite drummers on the planet, Richard Spaven. I started transcribing this little segment of Richard playing over his track "Law" a few months ago, and wanted to share what I learned along the way. My goal was not to copy "licks" or phrases, but to integrate some CONCEPTS into my own playing, and I hope this video helps you do the same!
Want me to breakdown any other drummers? Feel free to make suggestions in the comments below!

Such an amazing video man!:) Not only Richard Spaven is one of my favourite drummers but I do love your interpretation of his style:).
I love your humble and chilled out attitude even though you've kicked ass with your drumming:).
You got a new subscriber! Keep up the good work:).
Dude! Thank you so much. What other drummers have you been listening to recently? And I just checked out your channel - you got a new sub too my man. Cheers
Thanks man:). Appreciate that! When it comes to other drummers I’ve really dig into recently - Yussef Dayes really got me ;).
We need more vids like this on UA-cam 🔥🔥🙏
I'll try to keep it up! Be sure to spread the word and share with any drummer friends who might be interested - I appreciate the love!!
I to “Crave the Spave!”. Love his style. Awesome job breaking this down and bringing some Spave into your own sound.
Hahah thank you man! He’s one of my favorites🙏🏼
great work
Thank you✌🏼
Very cool
Yo thank you!👊🏼
Great video! Well explained too, very useful 🤘
Hey that was really amazing! Richard is one of my favorite drummer and that helped me a lot to understand better whats going on in his drumming. Thanks for the video!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it.
Siiiiick
Bravo and thank you mate :) Cheers!
My pleasure man! Glad you dig
love it!!
Fantastic vid. Thanks!
Glad you dig it!
This is great! I love how you’ve broken down different aspects - which is so useful. I was looking for RS licks and I got much more!!! I got some of his DNA playing style. Keep up the good work. Subbed. 🔥
Mannn thank you so much. I really appreciate that. Any other drummers you'd want me to break down similar to this?
@@InTheGroove_ pleasure… I’ll let you know.
Such a good video. Spaven can be an elusive drummer to breakdown, but you were able to extract some broad concepts that can be applied to any style. My favorite part of his playing is emphasis on "weird" beats in his phrasing (really just upbeats). It creates almost this rhythmic dissonance till he resolves it on a downbeat. Keep up the good work dude.
P.S.- skyler sent me here!
Man I really appreciate that! Glad I could help make some of his drumming easier to comprehend for us mortals hahaaa
Great information, great video, sub 🤘
Great video!!!
Thanks Ivan!
instant sub. bravo. this is exceptional
Wow - thank you. I've been busy lately but I'm going to try to make more videos similar to this in the next few months.
Very nice :) :)
thank you!
You gonna keep making these?? 👍👍
Ah man! I wish... but unfortunately right now I have to pause. I recently got married and moved into an apartment with my wife so I can't play acoustic drums due to noise and space. But once we find a home and I can have another set up like this, I'll be doing deep dives like this into my drumming heroes! Thanks for the motivation.
Great lesson man. Tq so much. Can you provide a pdf of your transcription.
Sorry for the delay! Check out my newsletter and you'll get the transcription in the 3rd email! www.groovidrums.com/registration
Love the Spave!! Jazzing up Dilla Inspired grooves. I'll sub dragged Inverted Triplet moving accents around to keep more of a dance feel, girls dancing keeps you getting $$ :).. What I love is Spave took me back into my stick control book. What can I dillafy. A Broken Pataflafla groove is cooking in my head.... Spaven Mayer those guys keep me thinking outside of the box..
.
Yessir!! Crazy how it all comes back to the basics like stick control/syncopation and rudiments huh? Thanks for the support my man
@@InTheGroove_ Yooooo, Groovi has spoken well today.. Life is about a solid foundation, built on solid basics.. A strike is the letter, Rudiments are common phrasings. The Language is Drums... Make 'em say some'n some'n :)
Thank you fucking much
Great video. Do you know any book that teaches concepts instead of different random beats and licks?
That's a good question. The books I'm most familiar with are the ones written by Pete Magadini about polyrhythms - check those out in the video description.
