I’m fortunate to own one. The issue I’m having is trying to find another case for it. The original case isn’t going to last much longer. It looks like I will have to get a custom case made, which is going to be expensive.

I got to play one (Mk VI, no high F#) a couple of years ago, when my repair tech had it for sale. Wish I could have afforded it. It had a very creamy sound. I did make sure to get a photo of myself holding it! :)

Any chance the full archive of S/N with date and model description will ever be made public? This is really cool data!
Also, I'd love having a modern Low A alto, make them, Selmer!

Finally, some facts and not myth. Thank you. Now I know I have one of about 220 Selmer Mark VI Low A altos with F# shipped to the United States 😊

I only recently got to see one in person. I knew they were rare, but not that rare. Most people will never see one.

Excellent video and what fascinating research! I believe I recall seeing photos of Ornette Coleman playing a white-lacquered low A alto, perhaps a Super Action 80. Any chance you encountered such an instrument?

A third question that should be answered is "why?" Why did one feel that it was important to have a low A? It's only a half step lower than normal, and there are Tenor Saxes and Bari Saxes for those who want to go lower.

Likely driven by a potential trend in music arranging and composition. Low A baritone sax became in demand because of how ensemble music was arranged. It's likely that at one point in the early 20th century there may have been a music arranging demand for alto saxes going to low A, given some written music, but then maybe there wasn't as much of a demand. That's the "need" you ask about. How music was written, and an assumption that it would be needed. Then it wasn't.

@@saxshooter thanks. It's hard to imagine needing that note, on an Alto Sax. On a Bari, it makes more sense, so you can get to that low concert C two ledger lines under the bass clef. But, many hardcore bari players prefer playing bari's without the low A, as adding the low A messes with the overtones and what not. Plus it makes the sax heavier because of the additional key work.

Probably classical music. To reach the lowest note of the viola, the same as the baritone has the A to reach the lowest note of the cello. If soprano would have the lowest A, you would have the lowest note of the violin there too. So that would allow to directly play any string quartet (double and triple stops and other string techniques appart) with a saxophone quartet.

@@javiervazquez5556 but in traditional string quartet transcriptions, the alto part plays the Violin II part and the Viola part is played by the tenor, which absolutely has the range. SSAB quartets to me just wouldn't have the same warmth that makes saxophone music sound phenomenal.
