- To celebrate the million subscribers milestone we achieved last week I decided to make once again the project that has been the most successful on my channel:
The only aluminum cast handle hatchet!
This time I went for a pretty different approach compared to lost foam. By reproducing a 3d model of the hatchet head starting from two reference pictures, I made a split pattern that can be used to make a two part mold.
This casting method has many advantages compared to lost foam: it's quicker to make (no need to make the foam pattern everytime and avoids plaster curing time) and can be used over and over without a problem.
For these reasons I decided to challenge myself by making four of the same aluminum handle hatchet. Once the process is dialed in the casting results are very repeatable so I had very minor differences between the four completed hatchets and, to me, that's the best success!
Of course I don't really need four more axes with alumunum handle in my life, so I will keep only one. (The number 3 since I stamped the nuber backwards)

And if you are wondering the hatchet with aluminum hangle weights 1.2 kg (2.6 lb) while with the wooden handle it's about 0.83 kg (1.8 lb).

0:41 Grinding paint off and smoothing with flap disk on angle grinder
1:04 Hand sanding to uniform the scratch pattern. Up to 220 grit
1:31 Design head and pattern 3d model in Fusion 360
2:44 3d printing in pla with CR-10s
3:00 Assemble the pattern with ca glue, pins are printed at 97% to cout for press fit allowance
3:37 Baby powder used as mold release
3:41 Petrobond sand (specific oil bonded sand made for metal casting)
6:06 Cutting infeed and outfeed with a tubing
6:37 Risers to increase static pressure inside the mold
6:51 Melting aluminum in coal foundry
7:06 Degassing with sodium carbonate
7:18 Removing impurities with a specific aluminum flux
8:20 Metal cutting bandsaw
8:55 Refining the shape with rasp and file
9:20 Steel chisel to easily clean flashing around the head
9:31 Orbital sander from 40 to 400 grit
9:50 Hand sanding up to 1200 grit with WD40 as lubrificant
10:09 Polishing on cotton wheel with fine polishing compound
10:29 Cleaning up the edge on 2x72 belt grinder with fine belt

@@thanosdione8053 I think that'd be better. I can't see anyone being able to use a plain metal handle for too long because there's virtually no dampening and its usability will vary widely in different weather conditions.

Interesting concept and great way to showcase your skills. As a professional axe maker, I wouldn't dream of using an aluminium handle for a good number of reasons. Wood is essential to absorb shock along with being both individual and beautiful.
Genuine question: Why do some many baseball teams/leagues use aluminum bats if it has issues with shock absorption?
@@THEbeautifuLIE The reason wood bats are used is to absorb the energy of a more powerful hitter and make the game safer for those in the projected baseball’s path… you kinda proved the point, aluminum is not as shock absorbent as wood. 😂

If the wood is better for absorbing shock, energy, etc, I’m asking why so many kid’s leagues, softball leagues, etc employ aluminum bats. Why doesn’t everyone simply use wood bats exclusively?

А вот теперь попробуй на морозе -30 пробовать им без перчаток или провод под наприжением перерубить в первом случае руки отморозиш с токой ручкой а вовтором током убьет на мой взгляд он только на стену повешаный как произведение искусства будет пользу приносить смотреть и радоватся красоте и не более того а так задумка хорошая.

Он не начнет деформироваться. Алюминий гораздо прочнее, чтоб при такой площади соприкосновения расшататься. Скорее топор лопнет

@@capaurus аллюминий мягкий относительно стали и в местах нагрузки он будет уплотнятся, освобождая место стали, поспепенно увеличивая пространство между топором и топорищем. Использовать это чудо по назначению ни один нормальный человек не станет.
Эстетическая ценность этого - крайне сомнительна. Такие затраты человекочасов, расходных материалов и килоджоулей тепловой энергии, а что на выходе!?
Даже у самого лояльного эстета это произведение вызовет вопрос "нахуйа?"

Плюсы - красиво и на этом они кончились. Минусы -ручка удар не гасит, пачкается, в холод к ней прилипнешь, при расшатывании не подобьёшь не расклинишь.
Искусство ради искусства, никакой практической ценности. Ещё и топоры из-за напряжений, возникших при нагреве при заливке алюминия будут лопаться около отверстия для топорища, если ими работать. Ну и руки после работы таким топором придётся долго отмывать от черноты.
Не лопнут однозначно,потому что отпуск полный произойдет.
А вот руки да,чернеть от окислов будут.

Алюминий плавится при 600 с чем то..это температура полного отжига.
Медленное охлаждение в форме не даст закалки,соотвественно никакой хрупкости не будет.

It can't be knocked out as the base of the handle is larger than the eye of the head. All timber handles require cutting for removal unless using a puller to remove the wedge and pin.
He still knocked it out and could have knocked it out with the handle attached if there was space in the vice. Didn't HAVE to be cut down
@@ImBuananaGiven that it was a dirt cheap axe with poor quality handle I don't understand why anyone would keep it. Secondly, the only way to remove an axe handle intact is to 'pull' the circular pin out and the wooden wedge. So, explain to me how 'you'd' do that?
I don't know where you live, but I know axes better than most as I own more than 70 and sell more than 100 vintage axes a year. Quality axes have handles made from Hickory (American) and other selected Hardwoods from Australia and Europe that have correct grain running from toe to heel, or chisel to eye.
Most people know nothing about axes, for those that don't, it's best they not comment at all.
Can we have a video on how to restore your wrist, Cause the impact of using a metal handle will mess them up.
I don't think it will. I was thinking the same thing but then I noticed how the axe head is "discoloured" half way through. So that means that the metal around the eye is much much softer than the cutting edge and that will do the shock absorbing.
Granted it's not a traditional hatchet but it is beautiful and the craftsmanship that went into it makes this more like a show piece than an actual tool, imho.

@@_jocker_games_ Лопнет не клинок, а обух. Т плавления алюминия выше температуры отпуска стали, даже при высоком отпуске. Что скорее всего приведет к хрупкости стали.
Sadly all that is, is a polished turd. Cheap hardware hatchet head to start still cheap at the finish. All you did was add a fancy non shock absorbing aluminum handle. God help the hands of the fool foolish enough to use it.

Why not use the original axe as the mold, then remove the handle?
Pouring the handle in, wouldn't it change the hardening of the steel and it would need re-tempered?
It didn't change the edge on the ax light blue is proper hardness for an ax.

Этот чел рукастый, но у него фетиш на алюминиевые ручки для инструмента, особенно для топоров. Ему даже в комментах писали, мол, хватит делать алюминиевые ручки. Но ему похер, теперь он сделал ЧЕТЫРЕ топора с алюминиевыми ручками.
В общем, любит он бесполезную херню делать.

Кстати, дедушкин топор, ещё при Николае || кованый из того что под руками было, лихо пашет до сих пор. Хотя металл так себе.
Металл скорее всего не так себе, а очень хороший. Вероятнее всего закален не очень хорошо или отпуск сильной большой. Я перетачивал советский топор 60х годов, потом отжигал в печи с медленным остыванием, потом нагрев и закалка в воде, и отпуск в духовке около часа при 200 градусов, получилось намного лучше, чем было, рубит гвозди без заминов на кромке, по дереву так вообще почти не тупится, можно не точить, только править на пасте

I'm confused, not only can you not restore a new axe because it's not old or used but you destroyed a perfectly fine wooden axe. Why not just get a rusty axe head and start from the grinder step?

I really like the way the heat treatment to the axe head remains and you didn’t polish it out, fantastic job 👍
Uh you do realize that by casting an aluminum handle for it. This idiot took out what little hardness was actually in the blade edge. That edge might as well be made out of butter as it will never hold an edge.
If you watch the colors of the oxidation, you will see that the edge never exceeded 400F. Witch means that the tempering is intact. Not a fan of the metal handles tho. But cool idea still.

Может и выглядит симпатичненько, но на деле , особенно в холода, такая ручка будет не практичной - скользкой и холодной, да и руки все почернеют от неё. Дерево приятней рукам. Но процесс интересно было смотреть.))
