Der Untergang des Römischen ReichesDie Handwerker erschufen 27 dreidimensionale Strukturen und verbrauchten dafür 1,6 Millionen Stahlrohre, was aneinandergelegt rund 5.000 Kilometer entspricht. Es gab über 350 freistehende Statuen verschiedener Größen, die speziell gegossen und aufgestellt werden mussten. Das größte Bauwerk des Filmsets, der Tempel des Jupiter, war 50 Meter groß, und stand auf einem aufgeschütteten Hügel, der 30 Meter hoch war. Doch diese angefertigten Bauten waren keine Fassaden, sondern die Gebäude konnten alle betreten und genutzt werden. Im Senatsgebäude konnte auch wirklich ein Senat tagen. Zudem konnte man sowohl die Fronten der Gebäude als auch deren Rückseiten filmen. Hinzu kam, dass alle Gebäude auch mit einer kompletten Innenausstattung versehen waren, die speziell für den Film historisch korrekt nachgebaut und hergestellt wurde. Greatest sound track ever! The triumphal March from Ben Hur. The set is a fabulous reconstruction and from a movie that, unbelievably, I have not seen, however Ceasar, I presume it's Ceasar, is, fittingly, a Canadian. Rome was so solid, reflecting strength and stability. It is hard to believe that it all crumbled like Ozymandias.
This movie is 1964's The Fall of the Roman Empire. The Caesar portrayed here is Commodus, the same Emperor who you saw as the Emperor villian in Gladiator. The movie was sadly a huge flop, but not too bad of a film. Very historically accurate as far as films go even for that era, has Sophie Lauren in it, and uses one of the best Roman Forums on film; a truly expensive 1:1 ratio of the actual ancient forum itself.

Great Scene!! I always loved this part as a kid and teenager. Might of Rome and making Romans disciplined and organized. Thats one reason why the empire held for centuries. Of course the bad was behind the scenes. Today too many shows and movies are making them look like savages but the rest of the world, they make look good. Years ago then they made the rest of the world outside Europe or the Roman world look like savages. Greatness is greatness. I believe we can show the greatness like we see here but of course the terrible things behind the scenes. I loved Gladiator!! Loved the scene when they came into Rome but most the the people would have welcomed them home. People love seeing power and greatness. They get spellbound. Like when you see people who do not like a particular person who is rich, good looking, being so called cool, great in sports or music or acting, but they are also jerks and arrogant, most people seem to worship them or they get attention!! Wish they can make movies like that today about Rome, Greece, Europe now. Showing the greatness and looks on the outside and of course the drama behind the scenes like they do in these movies. Great Epics of those days.

Modern technology has shown that the Romans painted all over their temples and statues, this set looks great but I wonder what it would look like with all the roman’s colors.
That's true! I hope they to a good movie where the build a set like this in full colours. Even their coffins were colored. In the Catacombs of Domitilla the "Noah sarcophagus" shows traces of colors.
I was in Rome last week and asked an archeologist, what he thought about colors. She said , marble wouldn't hold colors, she said no to statues, but said maybe some of the reliefs at the front roof of a building. Let's see what comes up next.

I guess it's build with a lot of plaster .And with CGI i doubt they will even bother building something this huge anymore. A shame really, it would be a great attraction indeed !

Gebäude, Säulen, Treppen alle wunderschön marmorweiß. Sehr wahrscheinlich waren diese wie bei allen antiken Völkern, Griechen, Kreter, Ägypter, Minoer usw. sehr bunt bemalt. Wer sich schon mal in Pompeii umgesehen hat, kann sich an die in kräftigen Farben gemalten Fresken erinnern, auch außerhalb waren die Gebäude z.B. in Zinnober, Hämatit (Rot), Quarz und Kalk (gelblich), Azurit (Blautöne), Arsen (Orange), Ruß und viel weiteres bemalt. Auch die Statuen waren bunt, die Haut farbig und die Augen oft mit Halbedelsteinen besetzt. Wie schön wäre es mal mit einer Zeitmaschine dahin zu reisen. Lieber doch nicht.

Nice Holywood scenery, but probably as far removed from a real triumphus as possible, where are the captive enemy leaders, allies and soldiers walking in chains at the start where are the spoils of war. where are the floats with pageant reenacting the war where are the senators walking next where are the generals lictor's in war robes and laurel on their fasces then came the triumphator in an ancient four wheel chariot and wearing a red and gold toga picta, laurel and red boots and red face paint not wearing a militairy uniform. Then came his officers the only participants on horseback after them came the troups in toga singing lurid songs at the triumphator's expence and probably last white oxen to be sacificed. there were off cource musicians, but it's Holywood fantasy to have a brigade of praetorian guard like hornblowers on horse back.
I posted the clip because of the architecture not because of the accuracy of the personnel involved. Apart from the missing colors and the false background ( no hills), the forum Romanum betwenn the Caesar-Temple and the Temple of C&P on one side and the Capitol Hill on the other , the setting is very accurate from what we know today. That's my point, really.

The Forum rendition is far better than in my souvenir (and far better than in Gladiator). Yes there's no colors and the fact that the army was not allowed to wear weappons inside Rome, even during triumphs, and a "nazi salute" wich never existed at roman times, but the monuments are at their right place and they look credible. They made a great job without computer and they made it as close as possible to the archeological knowledge of the early 60's. Nowadays, historians consider the great temple of Jupiter Capitolum as an old greek style temple, and the Tabularium is now view as a one level building with 3 temples on top of it.
I agree that despite some faults the Forum set is magnificent. It's remarkably accurate for a Hollywood film (shot in Spain) and much better than any other cinematic reproduction, with essentially all the major buildings correct in overall design, decoration and placement. It was the largest outdoor film set ever created, pretty much life-size (approx 400 metres) to match the the Western end of the Forum. There are no matte paintings, so all the buildings are 'real' including the 260 feet tall Capitoline temple.
Jupiter Capitolium would have looked like a Greekified Etruscan temple, with awkward proportions I wasn't aware the Tabularium is now viewed as a one-level building?

@@MH-ms1dg Because Aedes are temple with a god inside. Divinied Emperors were not considered as a gods, they were considered as "sacred" or "divinied" (what was kept as "saints" in christianity). What we call temple now, are aedes. For exemple, the rostra was called templum, and were more a civil monument not linked to a god. For the tabularium, it's not quite sure it was an archive center, and it's not sure what we call now tabularium is the same tabularium of the romans texts.

That's true! But the soldiers I guess came in Uniform without weapons. And of course the weapons of the captives were shown in the pompa thriumphalis as loot and dedicated to Jupiter. So some weapons, seals, standards and think were shown.

When Caesar returned from Gaul he "crossed the Rubicon" and trekked with his troops against Rome (i. e. Pompeius) creating a civil war.

Gebäude, Säulen, Treppen alle wunderschön marmorweiß. Sehr wahrscheinlich waren diese wie bei allen antiken Völkern, Griechen, Kreter, Ägypter, Minoer usw. sehr bunt bemalt. Wer sich schon mal in Pompeii umgesehen hat, kann sich an die in kräftigen Farben gemalten Fresken erinnern, auch außerhalb waren die Gebäude z.B. in Zinnober, Hämatit (Rot), Quarz und Kalk (gelblich), Azurit (Blautöne), Arsen (Orange), Ruß und viel weiteres bemalt. Auch die Statuen waren bunt, die Haut farbig und die Augen oft mit Halbedelsteinen besetzt. Wie schön wäre es mal mit einer Zeitmaschine dahin zu reisen. Lieber doch nicht.

there were off cource musicians, but it's Holywood fantasy to have a brigade of praetorian guard like hornblowers on horse back.
You might as well name your historical sources. The clip does not show the whole extend of a pompa triumphalis.
I posted the clip because of the architecture not because of the accuracy of the personnel involved. Apart from the missing colors and the false background ( no hills), the forum Romanum betwenn the Caesar-Temple and the Temple of C&P on one side and the Capitol Hill on the other , the setting is very accurate from what we know today. That's my point, really.

The Forum rendition is far better than in my souvenir (and far better than in Gladiator). Yes there's no colors and the fact that the army was not allowed to wear weappons inside Rome, even during triumphs, and a "nazi salute" wich never existed at roman times, but the monuments are at their right place and they look credible. They made a great job without computer and they made it as close as possible to the archeological knowledge of the early 60's. Nowadays, historians consider the great temple of Jupiter Capitolum as an old greek style temple, and the Tabularium is now view as a one level building with 3 temples on top of it.
I agree that despite some faults the Forum set is magnificent. It's remarkably accurate for a Hollywood film (shot in Spain) and much better than any other cinematic reproduction, with essentially all the major buildings correct in overall design, decoration and placement. It was the largest outdoor film set ever created, pretty much life-size (approx 400 metres) to match the the Western end of the Forum. There are no matte paintings, so all the buildings are 'real' including the 260 feet tall Capitoline temple.
Jupiter Capitolium would have looked like a Greekified Etruscan temple, with awkward proportions

@@MH-ms1dg Because Aedes are temple with a god inside. Divinied Emperors were not considered as a gods, they were considered as "sacred" or "divinied" (what was kept as "saints" in christianity). What we call temple now, are aedes. For exemple, the rostra was called templum, and were more a civil monument not linked to a god.
For the tabularium, it's not quite sure it was an archive center, and it's not sure what we call now tabularium is the same tabularium of the romans texts.
