How to get the pilot's recollection based on the warplane history
I hope yall know about how terrible BetterHelp is. It has exploited its users, and trust me, there is a reason so many CCs have boycotted them.
Better help is an awful company
4 days later they set another trap. 2 F-4's flew like RF-4C's and 2 Mig-21's took the bait and both were shot down.
Down in my back due to an injury obtained during a mission. Some good days , some bad , but a good cup of coffee , my meds, and especially TJ dropping a vid just made my day a little brighter. 😊
Get on a bicycle and ween the meds. Faith will set you free.
Thanks for your service ❤
The F-105 was not some helpless prey. They had a 20mm cannon at a time when the F4 didn't and down low they were an absolute rocket ship. They were responsible for downing several MiGs during the war.
I think they were helpless prey as they kept getting shot down by mig 21s
100% correct but on bomber missions, heavily laden with bombs they couldn't manuever....
They were a plane fulfilling a mission they weren't designed for expect losses. Pentagon is probably to blame for not having a better plane than 105 and navy high upside are responsible for thinking guns weren't necessary on f4. They failed in their job and weren't held accountable
@@jthomas4361 Helpless were the North Vietnamese, not so much the Russian pilots.
@@nelsonzambrano5788 Ever here of salvo? Pickle?
Well this seems more detailed than that episode from “Dogfights”.
Same thoughts exactly, that was one of my favorite episodes from the “Dogfights” series but this went way more in-depth on the whole story.
The “Dogfights” episode on Bolo was excellent as was this video.
Rolling Thunder was a hedge trimming exercise. By the time a mission made i's way up the chain, got approval in D.C. and made its way back down, the targets were moved or the strike was modified to the point where they were pounding mud. Criminal that he was (I mean Johnson was too) Nixon pulled the stop pins with Linebacker I & II. We went "downtown" on those and brought Hanoi to the table.
Olds also got called on the carpet for this operation. They planned it at the wing level and kept D.C. out of it. McNamara was livid. But what could he do?
FTR, Robin Olds and Wyatt Earp have styled my mustache for decades.
Maybe a lesson there? Keep the politicians out of the fight. Unless, of course, some of them are willing to go into the fight themselves?
@@garydaniels5495: This type of decision making is one of the reasons why the US lost the Vietnam War. LBJ prided himself that he had to approved every bombing mission in North Vietnam. And to add gasoline to the fire, the US made their rules of engagement public, and to the adversary, dumb dbumb, dumb. LBJ and his Great Society program brought the US welfare system to what it is today, millions of people dependent on government handouts. But you have to give LBJ credit, he didn't start the Vietnam War, he inherited when John Kennedy was assassinated. Remember VPs are selected on the basis of how many votes can they draw.
@@garydaniels5495 My late wife (fu_k cancer) said, "The Department of Defense needs to have its name changed back to The War Department. The military branches need to be given objectives, and the means to achieve victory without political interference. The point of the military is to kill people and break stuff. Don't train men to be beasts only to force them to sit, lay down, and roll over. Turn our fighting forces loose to DESTROY THE ENEMY UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY." Also, the Allies should have supported Ho Chi Minh when he asked for help in getting the French out of Vietnam. Oh, but nooooo, we didn't do that. The whole mess could have been avoided.
@@jimheimerl1637 Well you got that 95% correct, that's a better record than Robert Strange McNamara. Been there, done that.
Robin and Chappie. Love those two guys!
Robin old is a legend for help turned the tide of the air war over Vietnam great video TJ3. Q:Are you excited to hear the new release of il-2 Korea.
Absolutely!!
Correction: Olds did not come up with the BOLO idea. Cherry and Wetterhan came up with the idea and had Olds submit it to command for approval. General Olds was my hero as a kid. I got to meet him at an airshow once. He was a great fighter pilot, but a better human being.
Heaven is safer with you flying cover. RIP General.
-PhantomF4G
You are correct sir!!
Camlee dalat vietnam
So these 2 Luetenants "instructed Olds to send it up to command?" .....
Probably not. More likely, Olds liked the idea and collaborated on the plan, approved it before taking it to the General.
@@j.w.perkins6004 Still, it was not his idea.
@@j.w.perkins6004 A better word would be "asked". My twin brother was stationed at Ubon at the same time I was at Korat, 1966-7. We volunteered in 1963.
Great video. The animation was awesome . I am fortunate to have gotten to meet VN War pilots from the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. I always enjoyed their stories.
The F4E had a 20mm Gun. Made close in Dog Fights possible. I was a Phantom Driver.
The Phantom never had internal guns. Had a belly or wing mounted gun but not that accurate

Hell of a story! Some damn fine...and crazy brave pilots! Well done!
Wonderful and great job TJ3 Team. From Panamá 🇵🇦
Thank you!
Robin Olds is an interesting character. Too bad he didn't get a chance to fly in Korea (against his best efforts to do so). Honestly, there are times when a man like him has been needed in command. He may bend some rules but in my research, almost always for the right reasons. He was never one to pull any punches in speaking his mind.
South Korea just retired their Phantoms. End of an era
Olds died a matter of weeks before I was nearly killed when my friend lost control of his car and ripped it in half. I'd always planned on joining the Air Force, wanting to fly the F-15. My father flew the F-4 and then the F-15 when they entered service. Small world.
F-105 , should have a FB designation like the FB-111
My understanding is that JB Stone came up with the idea for Operation Bolo
Love the phantom. Such a muscular fighter.
I very good video, for sure, but having heard MOST of the total story on cable tv, several years ago, I was disappointed that "the rest of the story" wasn't covered.
What the cable tv version mentioned, was how the US had anticipated that these short-ranged MIG-21s would get low on fuel, and then, unable to land at their own base (for reasons that I can't remember), they would proceed to another North Vietnamese airbase. The US had fighters waiting for the MIGs there.
The US also anticipated that the MIGs would then proceed on to an airbase inside China. The US had fighters waiting for them to start heading there.
But, unfortunately, I never got to watch what happened in that part of the battle. I was hoping that I would get to catch it here, but no such luck.
Perhaps I can do an online search of the story, and just read about it. At least I now know that it was called "Operation Bolo".
But, at least, I did get to enjoy what was presented here.
LEGENDS!
The F4 was proof that if you strapped big enough engines to it, even a brick will fly
Thank you for the story!!!
I always trust old school a man who found his 🪽 wings in world 🌍 war 2 respect 🙏 to a legendary fighter pilot showed the enemy in Vietnam how to deal with enemy aircraft 💥💥💥💥💥💥🤝🙏a man of courage 🤝
it prove you can not win a war with airplane.
7:10 --- untied states air force
?!?
lol
The video is a passing score overall, however, I have a few issues with it
1. The use of AI voices is unsettling and frankly a little disrespectful to the memory of these men.
2. Lack of diversity of the aircraft camouflages in the issues with camera angles can be improved upon.
3. Don’t use better help
I call "BS" on Robin Olds giving up a 5th kill and becoming a Jet ACE in Vietnam. No fighter pilot would give up a Mig kill to avoid a staff job.
Next : How Lamborghini beat Ferrari (it didn't).

16 mig 21s?
So they lost 40% of their migs in 20 mins?
Correct lol
Better help is a scam ...stop promoting them
I get bored when Americans will not instead of telling people how something is good, will just resort to too much boosting yet with all assets they boost with have never won any war on their own in world history. Its a lot of too much talking with no tangible results 😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Every good story involves Thunderchiefs and Phantoms. Speaking of Thunderchiefs, theres two F-105 pilots who received the Medal of Honor. Their stories are pretty badass
From what I heard in dogfights, this it messed with their ability to operate and now they weren’t sure wether it was F-105's or F-4's waiting in ambush again
Haha that is great!
Yes, the “Dogfights” episode on this (“Air Ambush” Season 1, ep 2) is excellent as well.
I have no doubt you'll make an episode of dogfights of May 10, 1972, the biggest day of air combat over Vietnam.
n 1991 usa invited russians for a simulated dogfight ,SU27 vs f15 . russians won overwhelming 8-0 , and merics were real looser assholes before and after the fight . USA is so pathetic, when journalist asked how it went merican general said it was pretty even , after they lost they fuelled the su27 with their low quality fuel , both su27 almost fell from heaven from 11.000m high, but lukily the su27 could start their engines at 2.500m again, they even told the merics if they drop give coordinates for help. they just left fullthrotle.
a true legendary great warrior
one of the best lines to describe him "in a different time and era Robin couldve been a warrior king"
Operation BOLO! I've been so excited to see this one. Appreciate all you do TJ. Stay awesome!
Thanks as always!!
I was at Korat in 1966-7. We did not have as bad a opinion of the F-105 as is portrayed here. It was an old fighter by this time and we used what we had (as always). It was the Russians that were the problem, not the North Vietnamese. They were much better pilots than the North Vietnamese. The same is true of the SAMS, the Russian technicians were much better than the Vietnamese. No one mentions how fast the F-105 could go if it was in one piece, close to 2,000 mph. (Once). (A little over 1,000 mph on the deck compared to the MIG-21's approx 750 mph). Ask the Russians how they liked the AGM-45 Shrike.
Sorry, although subscribed this video is impossible to watch.
In France they are too many ads and UA-cam makes use wait
at least 30 seconds to relauch the video.
Yeah i don't set those unfortunately
As an aside-ish thing we still had F-105's with the reserve wing here at Hill when I first arrived in 85. I'd always heard the nickname "Thud" came from the sound of the F-105 hitting the ground but figured it was simply a shortened version of the actual name "Thunderchief". I was wrong and the night the last two 105's left for the boneyard I found it was called that.
I was at the far end of the runway waiting on the road to access the taxiway to get to a hard pad when they rolled up for take off. First the throttles went to full power with a roar, then the roar deepened as they started to roll. Then there was a huge THUD as they hit the water injection and two spikes of flame climbed almost vertically off the runway. Hell of a memory and hell of a sight.
I spent many hours watching them and B-52's taking off and landing from my O-11a fire truck at Goldsboro. I am a little hard of hearing now.
@@tedoptional-p8l No idea WHAT you could mean :) When the F-16s started flying at HIll AFB some in the local community complained about the noise and official said it was "the sound of freedom!" I now live about 1000 yards off the end of the runway (slightly to one side :) ) and now the F-35's "sound of freedom" is shaking stuff off the walls of my house :)
every evening i jump into my F-4 on Enigma in DCS and for a few minutes i can barely grasp the immensity of what a stud Robin Olds was !!!

Regular people start a war. Politicians F' it up by incompetence. Story older than time.
The question is. How many MIG-21's were flown by Russians?
Thanks for continuing to get these awesome historical stories put out - Nice!!!
I'm reading Fighter Pilot: The Memories of Legendary Ace Robin Olds right now. He describes these very tactics when he enters in the Vietnam War. This video is perfect for anyone who's reading the book.
Awesome! My dad was "Phil": then Major Philip P Combies. He was Rambler 04 on Bolo and had a probable Mig-21 kill and a confirmed Mig-21 kill on Bolo. On May 20, 1967 he shot down a Mig-17 and received the Silver Star for his gallantry in action that day. He served as a flight commander in the 433rd TFS "Satan's Angels".
They also made the F4's transponders look like those of Thuds.
I had forgotten about that part. Thanks!
You should definitely do a video on viper pettigrew im not sure if he had any air to air victories in combat but i am sure if it wasn't for him topgun 1 and 2 and our beloved F-14 wouldn't be the same...rip bud Anderson rip viper pettigrew and rip robin olds
Olds was the quintessential fighter pilot! Operation Bolo, however, wasn't originally his idea but Capt. John Stone's. Stone brought it to Olds, he agreed with it and assigned 4 pilots (one of which was Stone) to plan it out. I don't say this to diminish anything that Olds did, but rather to ensure that the other pilots receive their due credit!
The North Vietnamese had more aerial victories than the Americans, based on the tactics you so well described.
Have you ever wondered if some of those Migs were flown by Russians?
THANK 😇
Awesomely well made video, hard to believe you had so much material to work with...
The main problem there were politics, if those politicians didn't make some stupid rules that completely gave advantage to enemy everything would be a lot easier...
This story never gets old. If true warriors like Robin Olds had been allowed to bring the fight to the enemy in this manner Vietnam would have ended very differently.
The Phantom was a great fighter, the problem was with the Top Brass belief in the BVR only Doctrine. This caused the 2:1 kill ratio, however when you did have pilots who could maneuver the phantoms they would become ACEs in the phantoms. Great men like Frank Ault and Dan Pedersen would retrain these pilots at a school called fighter weapons school, these TopGun pilots took the ratio from 2:1 and increased it to 24:1 for the Navy. However it wasn’t until after Vietnam that the Air Force would institute Red Flag and have the Top Brass change the Doctrine back to a Dogfighter Doctrine instead of the BVR ONLY one which caused the problems in Vietnam with the phantoms..
Great story. My experience was with RF4B Photo birds. 1967-2006, USMC, Vietnam. We flew in fast and took the pictures, with EA6B escorts with ECM. Thanks and Semper Fi.
Americans can bray as much as they want for winning a few battles here and there in the Vietnam War, but FINALLY, and at the end they had to tuck their tails FIRMLY behind their hind legs to slink away for losing that extremely unpopular war disastrously!!!
GDP per capita of the US in 1974 - $7,226
GDP per capita of North Vietnam in 1974 - $65
Talk about a mismatch, even with some help from the Russians and the Chinese for North Vietnam!!!
The US did pretty much the same in Afghanistan as well where the Taliban now rules!!!
You left out some of the best parts, like how they grounded every single other US aircraft to pull this off (you had to have visual confirmation to launch a missile) they also didnt tell the NSA about the operation because they needed their surveillance planes to pull it off.
TOP GUN
QUESTION: what sim is he using?
doesn't look like DCS
Gosh, it's almost like you watched the Operation's Room's original video, saw that they'd deleted it temporarily, and decided to make UA-cam bank off it. With an AI voice, no less. Can't wait to see what your sponsor "Better Help" can do for me, my goodness thank god you guys are here to help me.
IRL MiG-21 was very effective and scored 165 air victories, with the loss of 65 aircraft according to Vietnam. According to US data MiG-21s downed 103 planes at cost of 79 own.
You seem to ignore that Israel allowed the US to inspect and fly the Mig21 that was "aquired" from Iraq !! THAT gave Israeli and US pilots a great understanding of what the mig 21 could do and how to beat it !!
you only told half of the story right.
they flew flight names of automobiles, because those were the normal flight names for the THUD flights
Also, it was not Old's plan, it was a suggestion by one two of his officers and he fully backed it.. but the original idea was not his.
Yes, well, Operation Bolo did not prevent the Unites States' strategic failure in the Vietnam War.
The North Vietnamese army and air force, which were the armed forces of a third-world, agrarian country, did very well against the U.S. armed forces, which were the forces of a first-world, industrial superpower.
Most of the world has far more respect for the North Vietnamese and the Vietnamese revolutionary-nationalist guerrilla forces than it does for the United States armed forces' war effort and participation in the Vietnam War.
America have victory in Vietnam. A super power vs a weak opponent that was smart with what it have. In the mean while Americans know it's equipment and overwhelmed fire power. You Americans always looking victory in defeat. That will be your down fall against a capable opponent.
Nobody gets to be called "Kick Ass" anymore after these guys did this. Wiped out half the enemy's air force Mig21 fleet in a single day? They ain't comin' back for more.
We always hear about the amazing exploits of the US pilots during this war. It would be more interesting to hear some accounts of the MIG pilots. I'm sure they're not all of the Stormtrooper ilk given the losses reported even in this clip.
I enjoyed your video ! 👍
Military books on tactical fighting are indispensable for upcoming men and women to study as they progress in their military profession !
As an example Patton read the book the German general Rommel wrote on tank warfare !
Sad to see you try to link veterans' mental health problems during and after Vietnam, with your current sponsor. We did not serve for the money; you should not try to profit by our service. You should give whatever you are paid for that ad to a veteran's organization.
Excellent presentation, augmented by the most authentic animations seen yet. Gone are the days of reliance on archival film and video.

Another great video as always! So great to learn the stories of our countries heroes, with great commentary and well put together visuals to boot!
Thanks for the help Orca!
The US AF has no real imagination when it comes to attack planning, as they are totally predictable, which is a form of laziness. The army and the navy are about the same way. They say and go up the middle which is totally the wrong idea.
Choosing the Thud over the North American F-107 was one of the worst mistakes the US military made.
How come the Soviets didnt just send more MiG 21s or also send their own aces and pilots to combat US forces???
How yes no ... if you loss 1 men in mig-21 cheaper aircraft and 2 in f-4 expensiv aircraft
, for vietnam war losses are bigger for americans . 😂
Great story, but you need to speak in a conversational voice. Your presentations are always a bit stilted. In some ways like a computer voice.
Great rendition and visuals to what i consider the greatest aircraft ever built, and great equalizer for the MiG in Vietnam, and suitable for import to other nations. Peace
to me, it looks like the sidewiders made the difference. the USSR did not have the technology of thermal guidance for thei AIMs
My dad flew A-26's in Vietnam
Anyone else find this after watching The Operation Room's vid on BOLO?
The MIGs outperformed the big, heavy, slow US attempts !!!
If his blood alcohol level was 11% he would be dead. The legal limit in my State is .08 not .8, that would be lethal as well.
You must not know how many of our vietnam veterans are homeless and can't afford a phone let alone 30 to 90 bucks a month
From what my parents used to say back then, LOTS of the F4 Fantoms were shot down.
the F-105 was a beautiful aircraft
6:55 --- wtf?!?
snakes from 20k ft??
Really? 33 Phantoms were lost to air to air combat against the Migs.
