For those looking for some clarification for the chapter 4 ending cutscene, Zhu Bajie was originally a Grand Marshall of the celestial court. He admired the white-haired lady (goddess of the moon) and chased after her. He bumps into a maid-in-waiting (Chang'e) and she falls in love with Zhu Bajie. Zhu Bajie finds out that the Jade Emperor is having an affair with the goddess of the moon and the Jade Emperor, in order to hide his affair, banishes Zhu Bajie into the mortal realm. Seeing this, Chang'e willingly gives up her godhood to be with her lover and gets sent to the mortal realm and transformed as a yaogai (spider). After Zhu Bajie was banished to the mortal realm, he wakes up in Gao Village and sees Gao Cuilan (a different person; she is not Chang’e). He chases after her thinking that she is his lover (Chang'e) but after seeing his true form as a pig, Gao Cuilan gets freaked out and he runs away in tears. This is not Chang'e as she would recognize Zhu Bajie immediately. Fast forward a bit, to the cave/hot spring scene (this is during the Journey to the West). He comes across some spider yaoguais taking a bath. He turns into a catfish so he can get a better look at the ladies (yes, in the novel he is kind of a pervert). He swims towards the spider lady (Chang'e) who immediately recognizes the catfish as Zhu Bajie. The two reunite as lovers, however the Jade Emperor has decreed that their love always be destined to end in heartbreak (Zhu Bajie was sentenced to 1,000 lifetimes of love tragedies). An extra sad bit I found online: The last lines of the song in the cutscene: The female singer: "Please remember to look back when we meet in the next life." The male singer: "Please don’t look back when we meet in the next life." This really broke my heart watching this for the first time.

Here comes my favorite part of this game. It shows how love can be tragic and beautiful at the same time, complicated as love has always been. Both the pig and spider were celestial beings before they met in the mortal world. They still remembered each other and fell in love, but due to different stances, the romance ended up with tragedy. Truly touching moments after so many intense fights!

In novel, tv series the reason is more complicated but in the game the dev show us the string pull Baije down of the enlightment is his family ( The youngest spider sister is his daughter ). In the original story Bajie only tricked the spider and that's all. The love story of Bajie and the spider in this game is obviously inspired from a modern novel Wukong (悟空传) and a movie A Chinese Odyssey (大话西游). I would not called it as "pulled down". In Chinese we call it 相爱相杀 (the relationship of both deep love and deep hate). Of course the violet spider wanted to married with Bajie and killed this heartless man. Of course the violet spider couldn't bring herself to kill him, just like what he did before. Love is always stronger than hate. It is just like the romance of Jon Snow and Ygritte. I don't think Bajie cared about being buddha or not in the story of this game. He is satisfying to be the keeper of the clean altar. He just doesn't like the unfairness for not being a buddha whereas his master and his monkey brother become buddha. In this game I think Bajie only cares about the rebirth of his monkey brother.

He made emenies for helping the Wukong/destined one, so can't risk letting them know he has a daughter. Violet spider lost her mind after using Wukong relic like everyone else, but that is the only way to stay alive until she finally meets Bajie again and let their daughter see him. She restored her sanity and understood Bajie at the end when the relic is removed, that's why she called him a fool.

He has no choice but to walk away, because if the gods discover what’s happening, his daughter’s life would be in danger too. He longed to see his daughter and wife one last time, but he just couldn’t. Without the deeper context you mentioned, it’s nearly impossible to grasp the symbolism woven into the animation. Only those who understand the entire framework can truly appreciate its themes-shattered mirrors, separation, helplessness, hope, and reunion. It’s all part of a cycle.

Baije was a Grand Marshal in the Court, who admired Taiyin Xingjun, the Chinese Moon Goddess. One night, while chasing after the goddess, he bumped into a Chang E (not her name, but a title for a maid of the court for the Moon Goddess). The Chang E fell in love with him at first sight, while Baije continued chasing after the goddess. He ended up witnessing the Jade Emperor having a tryst with Taiyin Xingjun that night, which is an affair of COSMIC proportions, since both of them are celestials with their own marriage partner. For this, he was not only casted down onto the mortal realm as a pig yaoguai but also cursed with 1000 lives of tragic romance. Chang E heard of this, and decide to reincarnate as well to find him, but due to the same spelling of “pig” and “spider”, she reincarnated as the wrong species. All of this was a deviation from the JTTW novel. Afterwards, we see Baije with another woman in a field of drying sheets. This is his human wife, as according to the novel, he disguised himself as human in order to live a normal life as a farmer, until his transformation slowly got undone and his family rejected him. He locked up the father until Sun Wukong defeated him, and he joined the pilgrimage. During the pilgrimage, we saw Baije during the arc with the Spider Guai Sisters, where according to the game, he got reunited with the reincarnated Chang E, as Violet Spider. Despite being WAYYY different than they were before, they recognized each other immediately and made love, but the arc ended with every Spider Guais but Violet Spider dying, and Baije left to rejoin the pilgrims. Now that’s it for the animation, but here are a few additional details I find interesting from the game. If you put everything into context, some events in Chapter 4 itselfs become absolutely heart-wrenching. The reasoning for Baije’s strong rejection towards Violet Spider and his own daughter is, of course, due to his curse. His reunion with Chang E was only a tryst of passion, and he would have stayed far away from the one he truly loved otherwise. They would definitely suffer alongside him. Him walking away is the right thing to do, as he can’t be with them without causing them misfortune, not with the Celestial Court still standing, who will make sure it happens. And so he spent every breath insulting the mother and daughter, yet he couldn’t bear to say any of it was their fault. When Baije insulted his daughter for being ugly, he said “Hideous Spider! Who fathered such a thing?” The father was the hideous one, not the mother. He knew it was his daughter, and as old as Violet Spider has become, he couldn’t bring it in himself to deny her beauty, it was him who was the hideous one. For Violet Spider, even though she knew Wukong must have been close by and a fight was inevitable, she brought a child with her - Baije’s child. She wanted him to be able to see his daughter at least once. And here’s the kicker. After all those insults, to her and to their daughter, Violet Spider still couldn’t offer Baije to the Hundred Eyed Sage, for she knew he lied, and what lies behind his lies. So why did she call him a fool at the end? If we translate the last few lines of the cutscene’s song, we get: Male Voice: “If there’s a next life, please don’t look back.” Female Voice: “If there’s a next life, please remember to look back.” Violet Spider would have been content suffering through 1000 lives just to get a happy ending with him, and he couldn’t accept that. For that, she thought Baije as foolish. But, about Baije, when that part of the song is sang is when Baije woke up after the Spider Guai arc, and what did he do? He looked back, before hopping along to join Wukong and the gang. “Yet destiny, like a lover’s tongue, speaks one way and means another.” It’s a tragic love story that transcends lives, social class, and mortality, between two people who understands each other more than they’d show the world. However, during the chase of Chang'e, Bajie ran into a maid, and this girl fell love with Bajie at the first glance, even though she knew that Bajie loves Chang'e (tbh Bajie is literally lascivious in the novel and he loves any beauties). After the banish, the girl asked for the trace of Bajie, being told that he was punished by the Emperor and transformed to be a piggy on the earth (the mortal world). BUT, in Chinese pronunciation, A PIG sounds with Yi Zhi Zhu, same as A SPIDER (sounds Yi Zhi Zhu), so the tragedy or we can say misunderstanding was created. The maid chose to transform to a spider, just urging to be the same kind of her beloved Bajie, whereas she did NOT know that realistically Bajie became a piggy. But the destiny pulled them together again, Bajie sneaked to watch beauties "bathing" in the river with shaping to a catfish (quite skeezy isn't it? lol), by then the maid (lady spider) recognized Bajie and gave herself to him. For those looking for some clarification for the chapter 4 ending cutscene,
Zhu Bajie was originally a Grand Marshall of the celestial court. He admired the white-haired lady (goddess of the moon) and chased after her. He bumps into a maid-in-waiting (Chang'e) and she falls in love with Zhu Bajie. Zhu Bajie finds out that the Jade Emperor is having an affair with the goddess of the moon and the Jade Emperor, in order to hide his affair, banishes Zhu Bajie into the mortal realm. Seeing this, Chang'e willingly gives up her godhood to be with her lover and gets sent to the mortal realm and transformed as a yaogai (spider).
After Zhu Bajie was banished to the mortal realm, he wakes up in Gao Village and sees Gao Cuilan (a different person; she is not Chang’e). He chases after her thinking that she is his lover (Chang'e) but after seeing his true form as a pig, Gao Cuilan gets freaked out and he runs away in tears. This is not Chang'e as she would recognize Zhu Bajie immediately.
Fast forward a bit, to the cave/hot spring scene (this is during the Journey to the West). He comes across some spider yaoguais taking a bath. He turns into a catfish so he can get a better look at the ladies (yes, in the novel he is kind of a pervert). He swims towards the spider lady (Chang'e) who immediately recognizes the catfish as Zhu Bajie. The two reunite as lovers, however the Jade Emperor has decreed that their love always be destined to end in heartbreak (Zhu Bajie was sentenced to 1,000 lifetimes of love tragedies).

In the original story Bajie only tricked the spider and that's all. The love story of Bajie and the spider in this game is obviously inspired from a modern novel Wukong (悟空传) and a movie A Chinese Odyssey (大话西游).
I would not called it as "pulled down". In Chinese we call it 相爱相杀 (the relationship of both deep love and deep hate). Of course the violet spider wanted to married with Bajie and killed this heartless man. Of course the violet spider couldn't bring herself to kill him, just like what he did before. Love is always stronger than hate. It is just like the romance of Jon Snow and Ygritte.
I don't think Bajie cared about being buddha or not in the story of this game. He is satisfying to be the keeper of the clean altar. He just doesn't like the unfairness for not being a buddha whereas his master and his monkey brother become buddha. In this game I think Bajie only cares about the rebirth of his monkey brother.

There’s a crucial moment in the story when, as his wife is on the brink of death, Zhu Bajie glances up at the sky before turning to leave. He’s being watched by the gods, powerless to act. He has no choice but to walk away, because if the gods discover what’s happening, his daughter’s life would be in danger too. He longed to see his daughter and wife one last time, but he just couldn’t.

The guy who typed “the most correct and comprehensive” comment got what happened in the animation wrong. I’ll say what I’ve gathered, so get ready to cry as I have.
Baije was a Grand Marshal in the Court, who admired Taiyin Xingjun, the Chinese Moon Goddess. One night, while chasing after the goddess, he bumped into a Chang E (not her name, but a title for a maid of the court for the Moon Goddess). The Chang E fell in love with him at first sight, while Baije continued chasing after the goddess. He ended up witnessing the Jade Emperor having a tryst with Taiyin Xingjun that night, which is an affair of COSMIC proportions, since both of them are celestials with their own marriage partner. For this, he was not only casted down onto the mortal realm as a pig yaoguai but also cursed with 1000 lives of tragic romance. Chang E heard of this, and decide to reincarnate as well to find him, but due to the same spelling of “pig” and “spider”, she reincarnated as the wrong species. All of this was a deviation from the JTTW novel.
Afterwards, we see Baije with another woman in a field of drying sheets. This is his human wife, as according to the novel, he disguised himself as human in order to live a normal life as a farmer, until his transformation slowly got undone and his family rejected him. He locked up the father until Sun Wukong defeated him, and he joined the pilgrimage. During the pilgrimage, we saw Baije during the arc with the Spider Guai Sisters, where according to the game, he got reunited with the reincarnated Chang E, as Violet Spider. Despite being WAYYY different than they were before, they recognized each other immediately and made love, but the arc ended with every Spider Guais but Violet Spider dying, and Baije left to rejoin the pilgrims.
Now that’s it for the animation, but here are a few additional details I find interesting from the game. If you put everything into context, some events in Chapter 4 itselfs become absolutely heart-wrenching. The reasoning for Baije’s strong rejection towards Violet Spider and his own daughter is, of course, due to his curse. His reunion with Chang E was only a tryst of passion, and he would have stayed far away from the one he truly loved otherwise. They would definitely suffer alongside him. Him walking away is the right thing to do, as he can’t be with them without causing them misfortune, not with the Celestial Court still standing, who will make sure it happens. And so he spent every breath insulting the mother and daughter, yet he couldn’t bear to say any of it was their fault.
When Baije insulted his daughter for being ugly, he said “Hideous Spider! Who fathered such a thing?” The father was the hideous one, not the mother. He knew it was his daughter, and as old as Violet Spider has become, he couldn’t bring it in himself to deny her beauty, it was him who was the hideous one. For Violet Spider, even though she knew Wukong must have been close by and a fight was inevitable, she brought a child with her - Baije’s child. She wanted him to be able to see his daughter at least once.
And here’s the kicker. After all those insults, to her and to their daughter, Violet Spider still couldn’t offer Baije to the Hundred Eyed Sage, for she knew he lied, and what lies behind his lies. So why did she call him a fool at the end? If we translate the last few lines of the cutscene’s song, we get:
Male Voice: “If there’s a next life, please don’t look back.”
Female Voice: “If there’s a next life, please remember to look back.”
Violet Spider would have been content suffering through 1000 lives just to get a happy ending with him, and he couldn’t accept that. For that, she thought Baije as foolish. But, about Baije, when that part of the song is sang is when Baije woke up after the Spider Guai arc, and what did he do?
He looked back, before hopping along to join Wukong and the gang.

Just a very simple explanation: Bajie LOVE her, but he cannot tell her how much he miss her or love her because he is wanted by the heaven, anyone who is related to Bajie is gonna get erased, so he HAVE TO act like he hate her to protect her. As you all can see in the animation, he cried, she IS his everything, but he have to let go because he know what heaven would do to her. BTW, the relic obtained in this chapter represented in a lotus form, which it's implicit meaning is the taste of bitter, and the direct translation from Cn to Eng of that relic is " Tongue Taste Love". IT is a sad ending for bajie, but thats the best he can do.

Ok, here is the full story: in the novel of journey to the West, Bajie or Pigsy was Marshal Canopy, commending 80k celestial sailors. So he is not kinda nobody but a big name at Celest Court (heaven). But only due to his seduction of Chang'e (moon goddess), he was banished from the court and cursed to become an ugly piggy. In the game animation, Bajie chased Chang'e and accidentally bumped into "unspeakable" dating between Chang'e and Jade Emperor (presumably), with later one being highest god in Heaven, and Bajie was transformed to be a piggy, same as journey to the West. However, during the chase of Chang'e, Bajie ran into a maid, and this girl fell love with Bajie at the first glance, even though she knew that Bajie loves Chang'e (tbh Bajie is literally lascivious in the novel and he loves any beauties). After the banish, the girl asked for the trace of Bajie, being told that he was punished by the Emperor and transformed to be a piggy on the earth (the mortal world). BUT, in Chinese pronunciation, A PIG sounds with Yi Zhi Zhu, same as A SPIDER (sounds Yi Zhi Zhu), so the tragedy or we can say misunderstanding was created. The maid chose to transform to a spider, just urging to be the same kind of her beloved Bajie, whereas she did NOT know that realistically Bajie became a piggy. But the destiny pulled them together again, Bajie sneaked to watch beauties "bathing" in the river with shaping to a catfish (quite skeezy isn't it? lol), by then the maid (lady spider) recognized Bajie and gave herself to him.
