If its not 1080p yet, UA-cam is still processing. Sadly, this video is not 4K. And for the record, 4K recording on this channel will probably be occasional since my videos are just too long most of the time.
Would be great if you could do your videos in 4K. You have all the necessary material to do so, like the Mac Pro for example for montage/editing/rendering :)
9 Years later this is still a fabulous camera. Over a few years I bought 7 of them (and two FDR-AX700's), mostly secondhand. Now I record musicals and other theater stuff and deliver Full-HD movies to the artists. The video's are bright and crisp, and thanks to 4K I can zoom in a factor 2 in Full-HD without quality-loss.
I have a question what is the highest ISO/gain this does? I like this camera and need it for nightshot but I also am looking at the Sony A7S as it does 409600 ISO which I think there is only 2 cameras that currently do this and it records in 4k as I need this high iso to get super low light for dark videos without using nightshot. But I will also need nightshot too sometimes.
Very awesome! Camcorders like this will definitely help the majority of UA-camrs join onto 4K. It may seem like something that seems unnecessary now but it is the exact same when 1080p was coming along on UA-cam for the first time. May seem superfluous now but when 4K monitors start coming along, those who are creating the content now will be ahead of the game.
The Camera is great, you have a talent, it sounds like you are a pro speaker, you do a better job of expressing what you talking about than does politicians or professional speakers, excellent job.
For those who are interested, it weighs (with the larger battery FV100) 2 pounds 6 ounces... perfect for the smaller portable steadicam units such as the Merlin2... flawless.
After watching this/other reviews I went out and bought the Sony FDR AX100 (Now Discontinued). I'm very impressed with the performance of this camera so far. I'm still working on the setting to reduce noise that occurs in specific situations such as filming water with a lot of bright light. If you watch "Winter" 4K on my profile you'll notice this noise in several shoots. I still give this camera a solid B+ for video quality verses cost factor. Sony announced at CES they're releasing the little brother to this camera so I look forward to you posting a review on the FDR-AX33.
I apologize for the wrong info. I went into a brick and mortar location and it was discontinued there. This made me think it was discontinued due to the pending release of the FDR-AX33.
DOH. I saw the mic jack in your video hidden in front of the hand strap =) Thanks again for such a great video. I sincerely appreciate you posting this. It looks like a logical "step up" from the Canon XA10.
there are a lot of people that don't even have a full hd display or a powerfull machine, so I don't think that is the time for switching to 4k content. but I think it;s nice for you to have one to make some videos and watch them on your 4k tv
Good video and you have a awesome narration voice. I get my camera this Wednesday so I'm looking forward to that. Then the majority of the videos I film for my You Tube channel will be in 4k. Do you have a 4k monitor or 4k tv to view your footage? Can you recommend one that is decent with a decent price? I'm looking to get one of each. Thanks and good job
lol i was just about to recommend the Samsung U28D590D but it look's like you already got it. I was on the linus tech tips review, Hope the monitor works well.
It should. I was also looking at the Lenovo thinkvision 28 since it was a monitor and tablet combined. But it doesn't come out for a month or so and Apple plans to release a Ipad pro tablet that will be in 4K later this year. But I am loving the sony 4K camera. Filmed a bodybuilding competition 2 weeks ago and the footage looks beautiful even if it is just on my HD monitor. Thanks again
One of the better videos out there - as said awesome narration voice. Great camera work, fast, to the point, well scripted, no music background thank goodness - more on the professional level. There is so much crap out there, it gets tiring on the eyes big time. This is a breath of fresh air. Well done!
Thanks for the video. This camcorder looks really nice despite being quite hefty. I can imagine that in the future they will get smaller in size. As of right now a few UA-camrs are using 4K camcorders and that is pretty much the reason why 4K is so not worth it right now. It is really expensive and no one uses it on a daily basis yet. We don't even have 4K monitors yet either. Even filmmakers still use 1080p as apposed to 4K so it's not worth it right now for the majority of consumers. I am looking forward to seeing where 4K goes in the future though.
How is the macro on it. I like to make videos of 12 inch figures and I like to get real close to the head sculpts and to give the viewers really great video of details can I get super close. Thanks
Have you noticed improved overall image quality even in 1080p? I'm all excited about the small size and manual controls annnnd unlike the small sony you showed, you CAN add a shotgun mic on top! It's great all the way around... even though I plan to use mine for 1080p primarily, there are 4k tv screens now, so I can offer the option to clients. Nice quick review, fills the gaps while I wait for delivery man. It looks like you have been using the Sony HDRXR260? I've used that same unit quite a bit... I hope the AX100 isn't too heavy for the Steadicam Merlin that I've been using for the smaller Sony HD. Helpful review...thanks!
Hello Federick. I definitely notice better quality in 1080p out of this camera, thanks primarily to the far superior lenses and the much larger CMOS sensor. I had significant chromatic aberration with my 160 and 260, which tended to be my biggest issue since I could always get sharp macro shots out of the cameras. And over time, I noticed that the unit had a hard time with focus, all my handycams seem to develop issues over time with AF accuracy and I find I just need to replace them annually. I'm not sure what causes the degradation, but I notice it's just harder and harder to get predictable results out of a camera with some miles on it. Ultimately, I think the lenses make the biggest difference.
***** Thanks DB.... it's a near perfect system for the size... and the weight is well within my steadicam Merlin2 limits... thanks again for your review and response.
Thanks for the Video I have been wondering - now i am decided. I have had 30 years of using and liking Sony kit starting with 8mm tape, then SVHS then HD DX mini and it seems now they have done it again!.
I’ve always found Sony to not have the colors that pop like other cameras like Canon and stuff. I mean I like Sony cameras but the colors aren’t quite there but the price for this compared to other cameras is amazing!
Best review i've seen yet on the Sony 4K camcorder! I have two questions: one. What is the Microphone in the background with your iMac? And do you like the camcorder compared to your other older camcorder that just does HD video but is much smaller? Thanks very much.
So let's say you needed a camera for something like storm chasing. If this camera underwent the trials of rain, would it hold up? Are there any HD 1080p 60fps waterproof cameras/camcorders?
As far as I remember it was around 2000-2500 dollars, and it would have been worth it if you got it a few years ago but now technology has come a long way that you can get better cameras for cheaper and you can probably get a really good phone like the iPhone 12 Pro Max or the Samsung s21 ultra for 1100 dollars and you will probably get similar quality And if you want a dedicated camera you can look at something like a canon 90D or a Sony a6600
I recall that when I made the jump from SD to HD that with my old Sony HDV camcorders that if I shot in HD, the camcorder could be set to downconvert to SD to play on my old SDTV or to edit in SD on your PC. I was wondering if a similar process is possible here like being able to shoot 4K and then downconvert and playback in HD on your HDTV or to edit in HD on your PC.
Good video! I think its cool that gear dose not matter to you. Since you were using a average 1080p camcorder before this 4k camera. VS people with 10k subs using 5dmk3s like dummies. Glad to see 4k video from you mike. -Nolan
What camera is better, the FDR AX100 or the FDR AX33? I was watching a youtube video of someone filming downtown L.A and the footage looked excellent. He told me he filmed it with a Sony AX100. I own a Sony AX33. I just wanted to know how mine stood in comparison.
I have a sony Handycam HDR-cx580, 20.4 megapixels, HD. I got lucky a couple years ago at Best Buy because the box was opened! I have not been able to find another camera like it, no matter where I look. However, since everything is going 4K now it seems, I want a camera like that. I like the touch-screen functions, everything is so easy. Well, it used to be, someone decided to break the display! I need a new a camera! I really want one like yours!
Nice overview. Learned through this that my Handycam cx160 has manual white balance. As far as 4K goes, I'm looking forward to GH4 shooting I still love the camcorder aesthetic & form factor though. Sony really needs to update the VG30 to a robust VG40 that is 4K capable. They could take a chunk of the video DSLR/DSLM market with that as long as they allow custom picture profiles & higher bitrates than AVCHD. I guess what I'm asking for is for them to take the GH4 & put it in a camcorder body.
I just got the camera and I'm interested if you could tell me what would be a good microphone for it. The built in mic is sensitive to wind and I need something that has no problem with it and is capable of recording very loud sound coming from diesel locomotives. I would be very grateful for any suggestion(s), as I really don't know who to ask.
If its not 1080p yet, UA-cam is still processing. Sadly, this video is not 4K. And for the record, 4K recording on this channel will probably be occasional since my videos are just too long most of the time.
No way, all of your videos should come in 4K on this channel.
How big is the samsung galaxy note 3 unboxing and review video file in 1080p? That's your longest video, right?
Would be great if you could do your videos in 4K. You have all the necessary material to do so, like the Mac Pro for example for montage/editing/rendering :)
What about a 4k intro?
You need an intro. Love your videos but a catchy tune with some clips of past unboxings would be cool.
Wow is this video very high quality! :)
9 Years later this is still a fabulous camera. Over a few years I bought 7 of them (and two FDR-AX700's), mostly secondhand. Now I record musicals and other theater stuff and deliver Full-HD movies to the artists. The video's are bright and crisp, and thanks to 4K I can zoom in a factor 2 in Full-HD without quality-loss.
i really miss your videos. you had one of the most comprehensive Tech videos.
@18:14 Great use of NFC, I'd almost dare to say just for that feature alone this camera is worth buying. Can't wait to see the 4K demo reel.
Damn spectacular...
See what you're missing, Apple? Stop with the hubris and implement NFC already!
Nice
Who's Apple? Didn't they do something really cool back in 2007?
***** No, I think you're thinking of Nokia...or something. :)
One of the best, very best unboxing I've seen in hundreds of unboxing
I have a question what is the highest ISO/gain this does? I like this camera and need it for nightshot but I also am looking at the Sony A7S as it does 409600 ISO which I think there is only 2 cameras that currently do this and it records in 4k as I need this high iso to get super low light for dark videos without using nightshot. But I will also need nightshot too sometimes.
Deathbyillusion It has a backlit sensor and looks about equal to the Sony A7R in noise performance.
Very awesome! Camcorders like this will definitely help the majority of UA-camrs join onto 4K. It may seem like something that seems unnecessary now but it is the exact same when 1080p was coming along on UA-cam for the first time. May seem superfluous now but when 4K monitors start coming along, those who are creating the content now will be ahead of the game.
what would you choose, panasonic 970k or ax100?
which one has better features and quality?
I haven't owned a camcorder in over a decade, but this is really making me want a new one! I can't wait to see what you do with it.
Fakat söz dizim daha sonra tekrar izli?f 46
does it has and external mic? ISO control? white exposure? what kind of lens does it has?
Thanks a lot, You actually convinced me that this is the camera I need next.
Are you sure
This is 7 years old and there are much better cameras out there now that are cheaper
@@soumyonath911 Which ones? I have found this is the cheapest camcorder with a 1 inch lens.
The thoroughness of ***** is unmatched by any UA-camr out there. Excellent work Mike, I can't wait for the demo reel.
Thanks Tomas, much appreciated!
Oh dear lord that is such a beast. Absolutely awesome piece of kit.
The Camera is great, you have a talent, it sounds like you are a pro speaker, you do a better job of expressing what you talking about than does politicians or professional speakers, excellent job.
Cannot wait for the biggest moment for Mike's future videos, 4K Videos in UA-cam!
8 years later and this camcorder is still being use with high praise. I’m debating in the ax100 and ax53
Been a year and I'm still loving my Sony FDR-AX100!
Is it good for recording soccer matches. Speed and distance specifically
For those who are interested, it weighs (with the larger battery FV100) 2 pounds 6 ounces... perfect for the smaller portable steadicam units such as the Merlin2... flawless.
I would take a bet that this piece of equipment produces some INSANELY! high class video quality
Finally, 4K. Whaiting for videos in 4K.
I wish Sony had printed a thicker manual than the skimpy ones to cover all the functions that this camera has to offer. Nice review!
Still loving it.
What better FDR-AX1
Or nex-ea50
After watching this/other reviews I went out and bought the Sony FDR AX100 (Now Discontinued). I'm very impressed with the performance of this camera so far. What do you mean discontinued? It's at B&H now for under $1,700!

I apologize for the wrong info. I went into a brick and mortar location and it was discontinued there. This made me think it was discontinued due to the pending release of the FDR-AX33.
Thank you for giving us a closer look at this camcorder.
Great video man , Your one of my favourite tubers , I love to watch unboxing and reviewing , Keep up the good work .
Nice to see you switch to these type of product reviews. Good work
Very good Video :)
Wow,that is awesome, now if only I had a 4K TV,so I could see the true quality of that camera
I also bought one----like it a lot. Have had it about a month.
DOH. I saw the mic jack in your video hidden in front of the hand strap =) Thanks again for such a great video. I sincerely appreciate you posting this. It looks like a logical "step up" from the Canon XA10.
Camcorder is such a retro description.
LOL, I know.
filled wit many features
You are so helpful. Thank you, kind sir, for creating your helpful content.
there are a lot of people that don't even have a full hd display or a powerfull machine, so I don't think that is the time for switching to 4k content. but I think it;s nice for you to have one to make some videos and watch them on your 4k tv
Yeah I'm still rocking on 19" screen, till death do us part lol
Even if it records in 4k, it'll still be viewable to those who don't have 4k you know right?
yes I know that, but in terms of quality, there's not going to be a big difference.for the non-4k and especially non-fullHD users
Loved this video .. Now if apple puts out a much awaited 4k monitor before the end of the century, that would be the icing on the cake.
I'm considering this one or ax53, which would you recommend? (I shoot mostly static, but BOSS seems like a cool feature to have)
Good video and you have a awesome narration voice. I get my camera this Wednesday so I'm looking forward to that. Then the majority of the videos I film for my You Tube channel will be in 4k. Great video, well-paced review. Ordered mine a couple days ago! Driveway duty commenced. :)
So this camera can just shoot in 1080 right? We dont have to use the 4k if we dont want to?
I'm really excited for this 4k camera
I can’t wait to get camcorder for my birthday🥳
Man, Ive been wating for this for a long time....
Great Video!!! One of the best "unboxing" videos for this product !!!
Cool video can't wait for 4k to go mainstream with gh4
Well done, one of the accurate and perfect review in UA-cam
How is the macro on it. I like to make videos of 12 inch figures and I like to get real close to the head sculpts and to give the viewers really great video of details can I get super close. Thanks

Wow its even better than i expected. Thanks for the video
Awesome camera and even better video! Ordered me one based on this video! So Thanks
This handy cam looks like a really good cam, looking forward to seeing the 4k vids, loads of really nice features aswell.
Very nice review, i'm not a Sony fan myself, but this has got me interested in this camera, great review!
Don't think bad, your channel icon made me think you are Johnny sins
Thanks for the Video I have been wondering - now i am decided.
I have had 30 years of using and liking Sony kit starting with 8mm tape, then SVHS then HD DX mini and it seems now they have done it again!.
Wait for the fdr-ax33 version
Awesome video!
I love this Camcorder, it's perfect!
Impressive Sony AX100! I like one too!
hi i'm a new subscriber i've been subscribing for a few weeks this is the first video i've comented on
I’ve always found Sony to not have the colors that pop like other cameras like Canon and stuff. I mean I like Sony cameras but the colors aren’t quite there but the price for this compared to other cameras is amazing!
Sony is the best!
It's awesome!
Rich + Rich = DetroitBORG
BOY...YOU HAVE ONE CLEAN TABLE (DESK) THERE !!!
P.S. VERY GOOD REVIEW VIDEO !!!
Camcorderception.
LOL, the one UA-camr still using Camcorders ;)
***** Camcorders are great for shoot and run. DSLRs are better for creating video with a film look despite its design as a single frame shooter.
***** It's far and beyond better than the rest of UA-camrs who use a crappy iPhone.
***** But still crappy and nowhere near the quality of even a cheap camcorder.
how much is this
what is the difference between interlacing & Progressive in the frame rate?
This is my future camera! I want! Ha cool video, man!
Best review i've seen yet on the Sony 4K camcorder! I have two questions: one. What is the Microphone in the background with your iMac? And do you like the camcorder compared to your other older camcorder that just does HD video but is much smaller? Thanks very much.

Good job on the unboxing video
Wow this is just amazing.
Nice job explaining a Sony video camera.
Nice unboxing video!
This is still $1500 in 2020... and I like it. Worth the price? How much was it when released? Thanks!
As far as I remember it was around 2000-2500 dollars, and it would have been worth it if you got it a few years ago but now technology has come a long way that you can get better cameras for cheaper and you can probably get a really good phone like the iPhone 12 Pro Max or the Samsung s21 ultra for 1100 dollars and you will probably get similar quality

this camera is the beastest camera
I love the UI sound it reminds me of Arcade Machines : ) its very sony :)
Good video! I think its cool that gear dose not matter to you. Since you were using a average 1080p camcorder before this 4k camera. VS people with 10k subs using 5dmk3s like dummies. Glad to see 4k video from you mike. -Nolan
Good god, I never new they had this out this early after CES
Please start uploading 4K as soon as possible
Congatulations for your new camera
It is awesome
Thank You!
awesome video!!
hi detroitBROG
i love your all videos
am your great fan
Amazing device, and great unboxing & overview.
Excellent
Very nice i like your new Sony 4k Camera Mike you sound very happy enjoy! and i look forward to more of your videos and maybe 1 in 4k!
I love this camcoder
It would be great to see some actual footage taken with this camera. I'm particularly interested in DOF
What camera is better, the FDR AX100 or the FDR AX33? I was watching a youtube video of someone filming downtown L.A and the footage looked excellent. He told me he filmed it with a Sony AX100. I own a Sony AX33. I just wanted to know how mine stood in comparison.
The AX 33 is a step below the AX 100
I have a sony Handycam HDR-cx580, 20.4 megapixels, HD. I got lucky a couple years ago at Best Buy because the box was opened! Nice overview. Learned through this that my Handycam cx160 has manual white balance. As far as 4K goes, I'm looking forward to GH4 shooting

Great video, as always.
Looking at the state of cam and box, this was the second time you unboxed it ;-)
PS: are you funded by sony?
AWESOME job. Thank you for covering everything.
Another fantastic review
This looks awesome
How far is the range when using the phone app? Thinking about using this for wedding ceremonies, and I'd love to be able to remotely zoom in.
great review of the ax-100, it think it is the best review on you tube . Can the sony 4k video camera playback on a samsung 4k tv?.
Wow good camera. Nice video thanks
Hey Mike ......This is the best video on UA-cam for this camera , i just wanted to ask you that , do you still use this camera ?
Thanks
I know what are you gonna ask when he replies "can i get it" right?
Goldenfreddy234 Plays Nope ! Maybe i would have ...if i didn't own a a7sii
really appreciate ur work man...
Detroit, this camcorder is awsome! But obviously a little costly! I wonder if there are even more recording resolutions like 720p and 480p?
