Green Schweppes is ginger ale. Yellow is tonic water. Blue is soda water. The problem is probably that Harvey’s don’t season their meat enough. Its just beef, but if you like toppings like banana peppers, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Then you’re at the right place. It is the same process as Subway’s.
A lot of Harvey's restaurants are also Swiss Chalet restaurants as well. This means that when you pull up to the drive through to get a burger, there is a large risk of driving away with a half-chicken and rack of ribs dinner instead, which unfortunately is a lot more expensive than a burger.
We had a Harvey's inside of our high school cafeteria in Ontario. It was never lost on the student body that lunch was always gonna be delicious. That being said, we had so many burgers and poutine as teens that I didn't even eat Harvey's again until ten years after I graduated lol. Canadian staple.
Frings are a combo with fries and onion rings. Harvey’s burgers are always solid, A&W is a close second. Surprisingly, Costco food court has very good poutine for fast food
They were talking about the fries. Many years ago the fries were fresh cut. They literally had whole potatoes cut in the restaurant to make the fries. Incomparable. Now they're pre-cut and frozen.
Harvey's is great. Similar pricing to McDonald's for combos. The best onion rings. As for the burger patties, they are thick and good, not the juiciest. Different flavour than McDonalds due to it being flame broiled.
Growing up, 40 years ago, Harvey's was easily my favourite burger place. The burgers were charbroiled on an open flame charcoal grill. Burgers and fries were handmade fresh daily. Onion Rings and fries were fantastic. Today the quality of the burger depends on where you go. In some establishments, such as stand alone places, it is still charbroiled but if you go to a Harvey's in a mall food court for example, it is not. In these places the burger is cooked on a hot plate just like MacDonalds and then I believe the grill marks must be drawn on with a charcoal pencil because the burger still has grill marks despite the face the establishment has no open flame grill.
Harvey's has the best fast food burger you can get in Canada. Actually fresh flame broiled burgers unlike some other places who claim that around here (Looking at you BK). Really good onion rings and shakes.
There are tons of Canadian fast food chains, but unlike the US, very few ever expanded beyond our borders. It's only recently that some have started to do so. One of the world's very first burger chains is Canadian. Vancouver based White Spot was founded in 1928, only 7 years after the oldest burger chain in the world: US based White Castle. My favourite Canadian burger chains: Harvey's, A&W, Big Smoke Burger, Hero Certified Burgers. Burgers came from the German immigrant community.
My home town had the first place called Tim Horton's. Not donuts but HAMBURGERS. My favourite item was the deep fried hot dogs. Damn. It was run by Tim's brother Gerry. I think it closed about the time they started selling donuts.
I'm Canadian, and Harvey always serves the best quality; after being cooked, all the burgers or hot dogs are made to your liking, with the condiments you desire; you may ask for more or less; it is up to you. The meat is freshly cooked, and so are the fries or onion rings. This is very different from other chains since you can not say what or how much you prefer. Of course, you can at other chains, but sometimes it is not always how you ask, and I often did not receive what I asked.
McDonald's fries are hit and miss. I refuse to go to some locations as their fries are horrible. Usually too much salt. If I go there in a pinch I ask for no salt on the fries and get an extra packet of salt.
@@MickLoud999 Thank you, again I will do what you kindly suggest. What is funny to me is that at home when I make french fries I never add salt, because my brother has a pacemaker and must not eat salty foods.
I love Harvey's.. my wife doesn't. LOL so it's my secret indulgence when I'm out on my own. Great burgers and fries! So much better than any other fast food burger. A&W's is close, but Harvey's rules
Ooooh You can definitely screw up a poutine!!! Being from the O.G first home of poutine (Quebec) I have tasted in screwed up in many way! McD's is definitely one of those! Harvey's has been around longer than subways and the burgers actually taste like its beef in the bun (if I had to guess, probably way less fillers, but I'm not looking into it because I do need to eat on the go occasionally 😅. Their onions rings are 👌🏼! The ingredients to choose from are fresh!!! ... Damn! Guess I'm making burgers tonight! 😂
I introduced my American nephew to Harvey's through Joseph's video. I left a comment, saying, 'Harvey's makes your friendship, a beautiful thing', he replyed with a teary eyed laughing emoji. Take cars, and all the best.
Harvey;'s was actually char grilled over a grate. rather than cooked on a griddle like McD's. The patties came pre-shaped and frozen. The fries were hand cut, never frozen. I know from experience back in the late 60's. One of my jobs, other than mopping the floor was cutting the fries. I lasted two days. As s teenager, wanted t cook the burgers, not mop the floor, so I quit! Ah, the follies of youth. 😊🍁
Harvey's meat is made of 100 % Angs Canadian Beef, raised without the use of added hormones, steroids or antibiotics. The meat is cooked over a flame and you customize at the garnish counter.
Harvey's is great. The buns are already picked for whatever burger, but you customize everything else. They're a bit bigger (thicker) than a McDonald's and such and they're flame grilled. Schweppes is usually ginger ale in the machines and Brisk is lemon flavored, sweet iced tea. Many times, Harvey's is partners with/shares building space with another restaurant chain called Swiss Chalet which is primarily known for their rotisserie chicken.
I am a bit picky when it comes to burgers and won't eat them at a fast food restaurant, I'll usually get a crispy chicken burger. Harveys is the exception. I usually get an Angus. They have the only burger that actually tastes like a burger to me and the choosing your own toppings is a no brainer to me. I get confused when they won't let me choose my toppings, but like I said I'm picky about my burgers. The fries and shakes are also top tier for fast food (Did you notice he ordered "Frings"? Can't choose fries or onion rings? They have an order of both so you don't have to choose). As for McDonalds.... I don't eat there unless forced. And I don't consider that "burger" edible.
I get everything on my harveys burgers as well lol. Prices are very slightly more expensive than places like mcdonalds but the food quality is vastly superior e. the best poutine is done at any mom and pop shop in quebec. the second best poutine is probably the recently closed down whistle stop (had over 1000 types of poutine)
😮Best poutine I ever had, I'm proudly Canadian (45), was at a lil Ma & Pa Diner in Montreal. The poutine was baked, or broiled, which caused the top layer of cheese & gravy to form a 'crust'. It was absolutely delicious with a unique poutine 'crunch'.
Peter's Drive-In. 30 different milkshake flavours, and you can choose up to 3 flavours for one milkshake, 4500 different milkshake combinations. When you get your burgers, you dont just get a single, double, or triple. You get single and a half, double and a half, triple and a half. Only 3 in Canada. All in Alberta. And i bet they're not having those burgers with alberta beef. Black shirt guy would change his mind.
They should have got the Buffalo chicken poutine. It's great! The spicy buffalo sauce mixed with the gravy is just awesome. The plain poutine is fine, but the buffalo is next level. From a large chain restaurant, my favorite standard poutine is from Swiss Chalet. Add rotisserie chicken for a couple dollars. mmm so good. I suggest their normal brown gravy though. You can get it with Chalet sauce, but I've never been a fan of that sauce. Chalet sauce tastes like someone watered down BBQ sauce with lemon water. Harvey's tastes like backyard BBQ. It's definitely tastier than McD's because it's cooked on a flame grill. My favorite burger place is 100% Harvey's
I have always preferred Harvey's. In Ontario is was not difficult to find a Harvey's but I moved to British Columbia and they are almost non-existent. Whenever I go back to Ontario to visit, i always go to Harvey's at least twice.
I managed a Harveys in the 1980s. The menu had skinny triangle fish sticks, we made tartar sauce by mixing jars of mayonnaise with jars of relish. The fries were from 50lb bags of huge potatoes cut and blanched starting by 5am. We had steak sandwiches. Breakfast began in 1986. Then the fish and steak disappeared. And the year before I left, they introduced frozen fries to save money and time which customers complained was crap. The reason that guy thinks Harveys burgers are bland is because every burger from McDs is sprinkled with a good douse of salt. Incidentally, the Harveys original burger is not 100% beef, but comprised of beef, wheat crumbs, and a few other additives. Harveys pride has always been the garnishes. People would ask for mountains of our pickles on the side or put more on the burger than the bun and burger combined. It was a fun time then.
I've always had the "double burger with cheese, with lettuce tomatoe and mayo, yummy !!! Harveys still grills their burgers. Actually I like the poutine at Harveys .. the trick is to be sure the gravy is good and hot when you pour it over the cheese and fries. I'm not sure about bun choices, I'll check next time I go. Harveys have joined up with Swiss Chalet so most outlets serve both now. Prices are competitive with other chains. I remember my first experience with Harveys back in 1983 when I moved to Ontario. Down east (in Newfoundland) there was no Harveys, now they have them.
I've been going to Harvey's since they landed in Alberta in 1976. I love building my own flame-grilled burger with fresh toppings. I have to travel almost 10 miles to get to my nearest Harvey's, but it is so worth it! Some restaurants have the history of Harvey's on the walls. I am probably their #1 fan.
Harvey's is the Canadian Classic burger chain. Other Canadian chains do the same thing with toppings, John Anderson's used( the chain doesn't really exist anymore), South Street does and has even more choices. Harvey's started in Richmond Hill Ontario. The location isn't there anymore.
My favourite poutine is by New York Fries. They're a fry fastfood counter in mall food courts. I go to malls specifically for New York Fries poutine. Their gravy is a beef gravy and bar non flavour. They also use actual cheese curds, not shaved and its called New York fries, despite being Canadian, because the fries are made New York style with skin on.
the biggest obstacles of exporting a food franchise concept without losing integrity are a) the existing competition b) finding suitable locations c) laws and regulations in other countries... a good example of exporting a similar food concept is Shake Shack.
Best poutine is almost anywhere in Quebec. I live in eastern Ontario so I've been to Quebec for poutine more times than I can count. In my experience, the smaller family owned places make the best poutine, hands down, no contest. Honestly if you stay away from the chain restaurants, you really can't go wrong.
Harvey’s has a stellar business plan. They’ve always been consistent. Alberta beef is the best I’ve ever had. I’m 55 and I’ve never had a bad experience ever.
Canadian living in the US. I never go back to Canada without eating a burger at Harvey’s, chicken at Swiss Chalet, and grabbing a slice of Pizza Pizza. The regular burger is just different than any other fast food burger. Only thing is they changed their fries at the stand alone stores. You get home cut fries if it’s married with a Swiss Chalet.
The quality of the meat is better BUT the toppings at Harvey's ARE better. (They are thicker & fresher.) You also can't customise your burger in exactly the same way - the best you can do is say NOT to put something on it. Hands down though, I would choose A&W. When I want a hamburger, it IS the MEAT that I am MOST going for.
@@goblue84 I had heard in a different discussion (from an American) that Americans DON'T HAVE A&W "restaurants" - only A&W rootbeer sold at stores. Is this not true?
I miss Harvey's! They used to have them in BC but they all closed down. I grew up in Ontario and Harvey's was always a special treat. Also, best onion rings around.
Where most fast food burgers are fried, Harvey's char broil them. Much like a barbecue. Also, you select the condiments you want in it. I like mine as a cheese burger with mustard, relish, onion, tomato, dill pickle.
Harvey’s is definitely the better made burger and better quality. No comparison to McDonald’s where it’s slapped on with sauce and salty and some lettuce that is most times slimy and sparse. Harvey’s is more closely associated with burgers from home and the best thing is that you can top it any way you want it.
Mert! You’ll luv it. Harvey’s is grilled with fire, like a big fire grill right where you can watch. The onion rings are not crumbly (A&W) but beer batter type, yummy.
I grew up in Ontario. We would drive to the east coast regularly. One summer I decided to volunteer to order from the roadside food truck in PQ. I tried to order in french and man did I screw that up! Some random french guy just repeated my order in English. I think one item turn out to be "crushed fruit" (Pate fruit instead of patate frites, which is also called merely frites). I was 10 years old
Hey did you ever try Mary Browns Tatter Poutine. The 1st time I tried it I was hook 🪝. It is really good. They make the best Tatters. Their Big Mary Chicken Burger 🍔 is really good too. Next too Haverys Mary Browns is also Canadian. Two of my favorite 😍 places to eat. I also think Mary Browns makes the best Chicken. Too any one coming north to Canada 🇨🇦 🤔 I highly recommend Harvey's and Mary Browns.
Harvey's is great. Their burgers are on point, lots of toppings and sauces, fries and onion rings are awesome...I don't think I have ever had a bad experience at Harvey's. Come to Canada and try for yourself! :)
I like Harvey's because the burger is cooked when you order it and it's flame grilled. It's put together the way you want it, before your eyes. The price point is comparable to most other fast food places.
Hey from Halifax NS. Harvey’s is flame broiled grilled burger to order choose your own toppings and they dress it right in front of you (like subway). Fringes is two sided (fries /onion rings ).
There’s no comparison between McD’s, Burger King and Harvey’s. Harvey’s is the best by far. They don’t pre-cook your food and then let it sit under heat lamps. They also let you put on whatever toppings you choose If McD’s etc has more flavour, it’s due to seasoning being added to the filler
Hi there Mert, hope you had a great Christmas. I love your videos and I love Harveys. BTW my fav poutine place is Smoke's Poutinerie, it's soooo good. As far as burgers go, I love Harveys, they're delicious and yes I love the fact that you can pick your own toppings. The fries are really good to, my son normally gets frings because he loves both onion rings and fries.
Harveys is quite good when it comes to "Fast food", their meat sort of tastes like it has a lot of "filler" in it but there is something to be said about a fast food burger cooked over an actual grill instead of a hot plate and made to order when it comes to condiments and such. I like their fries better than the ones from McDonald's even though this could be considered heresy by some.
Their meat didn't always taste like it had filler. It used to taste of pure beef. They were so good that I was addicted to eating them plain with no toppings. Laws changed in the early 2000s for healthier fast food, and the patty changed which included that filler taste. McDonald's in Canada tastes better than in the US and the meat does not taste as good as Harvey's, but it is saltier. I like the fries from Harvey's better as well, but that's more of a preference thing rather than being strictly better.
I worked at a Harvey's (Parry Sound) in the early 90s. It was the most profitable in Canada. If you saw a raw patty before it went on the grill, you'd never eat it again.
Harvey's burgers are cooked on a grill, not a griddle, so they are more like a burger you would cook on your barbeque. Also, most Harvey's have a garnish counter, where you can get as little or as much as you like in the way of toppings, even to the point of choosing your tomato slice! You aren't usually asked what toppings you want ahead of time, except in the drive-thru. The fries are great, and the onion rings are actually coated onions, and not just flavoured. My favourite burgers are the Angus and the Veggie. I'm not vegetarian, but the Veggie burger is really good! I worked there for many years, so I've eaten way too many Harvey's burgers!! Can't stand most of the other fast food places. The burgers are usually too sloppy for my taste!
Schweppes has a love/hate relationship in Canada. To begin with the brand Canada Dry, was owned by RJR Nabisco, who sold its soft drink business to Cadbury Schweppes in 1986. (Today, Canada Dry is owned by Keurig Dr Pepper, which was spun off from Cadbury Schweppes in 2008.) A lot of people hated the fact a company from another country (schweppes = great britain), owned one of our quintessential brands. (the sale of Tim Hortons to a u.s. conglomerate really boosted the despisal levels...especially with the attempt to make it, just another fastfood restaurant)
Harvey's is honestly an amazing fast food restaurant. I don't go super often, but I love being able to do my own toppings, the Frings (half french fries half onion rings) as the side, and it's always cooked fresh to order.
Every Hamburger at McDonald's is the same. There's only a few toppings on the darn thing. At Harvey's they don't even cook your burger until you order it. Then you get to select your own toppings and the selection is quite impressive.
It’s not that the beef is bland, it’s just that the American confuses the taste of actual beef with the taste of chemicals and additives. He may have never tasted real beef without the laboratory flavouring.
Harvey's is always been my favorite. You cannot compare it to McDonald's or Burger.King Harvey's always serves fresh beef on a open flamed grill. Not frozen or fried. It's just delicious
Personally , my favorite fast food burger is a Double Canadian burger (2 beef patties and a slice of Canadian bacon/ham) or a Double Teen burger from A@W !!!! 🍁🌲🌻🇺🇦💛💙
You can't make ham from the loin of a pig just back bacon. Ham is only made from the hind legs of the pig. Canadian bacon is made by brining the loins and rolling the loins in pea meal modern times we use corn meal. Sliced bacon is pork belly which is fat and nipples.
My fav fast food poutine is Harveys but the best is from Costco. They use Cavendish fries and lots of cheese! Also only like $6 and enough for 2 people.
We used to have a place around here called "Fudrucker's" that was very much like that - order your burger then go to the "toppings bar" and I'd load my salad on top 😂 Anyone know if they're still around anywhere?

My favorite fast food burger joint. Unfortunately I live in BC and there are no Harveys here anymore.
Burgers came from the German immigrant community.
no harveys in b.c.😢
My home town had the first place called Tim Horton's. Not donuts but HAMBURGERS. My favourite item was the deep fried hot dogs. Damn. It was run by Tim's brother Gerry. I think it closed about the time they started selling donuts.
yes yes and yess
@@MickLoud999 That is great idea the no salt thing, thank you
@@pierrefireball2505 Or you can do that to ensure the fries are fresh!!
@@MickLoud999 Thank you, again I will do what you kindly suggest. What is funny to me is that at home when I make french fries I never add salt, because my brother has a pacemaker and must not eat salty foods.
((choking back burger tears)) The nearest Harvey's to me is a whole province away. They're in every province except BC and man do I miss them.
I went to the last one in Granville Mall just before it closed. I drove from Richmond just to get their frings and Angus Burger.
I left a comment, saying,
'Harvey's makes your friendship, a beautiful thing', he replyed with a teary eyed laughing emoji.
Take cars, and all the best.
"they sell poutine at Harvey's?"
yes, they sell poutine alsmost everywhere in Canada. Even in a lot of high end restaurants.
I love Ourcclean Meat in Canada...it's a bit pricier but so much better than muck Donalds...lol
Yes the beef is Canadian and I suspect the soy beans may also be.
Harveys and Swiss are owned by the same company. It's now called Recipes Unlimited but used to be Cara Foods.
Harvey's is owned by the same company as Swiss Chalet (another Canadian restaurant), that specializes in rotisserie chicken.
I have been subbed to their channel for a long time.
Harvey's buffalo chicken poutine is to die for!!! I love Harvey's! ❤
You are welcome to visit anytime and try for yourself. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely love Harveys!
I get everything on my harveys burgers as well lol. Prices are very slightly more expensive than places like mcdonalds but the food quality is vastly superior
e. the best poutine is done at any mom and pop shop in quebec. the second best poutine is probably the recently closed down whistle stop (had over 1000 types of poutine)
That Yankee has been sniffing glue.
A long time ago Pete's was rated as the best burger in Canada! They are pretty good. Be hungry if you go to Pets!
There is a location a few blocks from me - now I am absolutely craving a Peter's shake! New plan for lunch!
Seriously, one of the best hamburgers I've ever had! If you see them promoting the Angus burger, go for it! 😎👍
Harvey's poutine is the best! Love the hamburgers, too. There is a flame grilled flavour that McDonald's can't even touch.
NY Fries is better poutine imo
I like Harvey's Putine. But I also like Mary Browns Tatter Putine. It is very good and also Canadian.
They have awesome hot dogs too.
There's no such thing as an "awesome hot dog".
Most Gravies everywhere are not like homemade gravy !! Merry Christmas to you and yours !! 👍👍🏽👍🏿✌🖖🍁🌲🌻🇺🇦💛💙
REAL gravy requires actual meat to be cooked like roast beef or chickens
I worked for harveys when I was a teenager. The meat to me is a bit weird tasting but better with toppings. I always stick to chicken there.
I enjoy harveys quite a bit...Original w lettuce onions and harv sauce. Yum and Buffalo chicken poutine so good. And donuts. Lol
The seasoning Harveys puts on their Onion rings is unreal! So good. Its like a sweet salty spice idk how explain it but so good
the biggest obstacles of exporting a food franchise concept without losing integrity are a) the existing competition b) finding suitable locations c) laws and regulations in other countries... a good example of exporting a similar food concept is Shake Shack.
Harvey's Makes Your Hamburger A Beautiful Thing. Remember the Fire Fighter that loved his custom 'hot' burger? They need a revival in BC.
Best poutine to me... Dixie Lee Fried Chicken in Eastern Canada. That's just me though. They put so much curds.
My good mate from Dundee comes to Canada every year, and he always makes a couple stops at Harvey's haha.
imo A&W is the best Canadian fast food place
The quality of the meat is better BUT the toppings at Harvey's ARE better. (They are thicker & fresher.) You also can't customise your burger in exactly the same way - the best you can do is say NOT to put something on it.
Hands down though, I would choose A&W. When I want a hamburger, it IS the MEAT that I am MOST going for.
A&W is American though, Canadians just seem to love it.
@@goblue84 I had heard in a different discussion (from an American) that Americans DON'T HAVE A&W "restaurants" - only A&W rootbeer sold at stores. Is this not true?
@@Carrie-so3ro there are restaurants in the US too, not a crazy amount though.
@@goblue84 Thanks for straightening this out for me.
I miss Harvey's! They used to have them in BC but they all closed down. I grew up in Ontario and Harvey's was always a special treat.
Also, best onion rings around.
Their vegi burger is so good. I love most of their burgers.
Where most fast food burgers are fried, Harvey's char broil them. Much like a barbecue. Also, you select the condiments you want in it. I like mine as a cheese burger with mustard, relish, onion, tomato, dill pickle.
The best poutine are made with RED POTATO's, BBQ sauce, and fresh cheese curds, and its in Drummondville Quebec, Canada, where it was invented.
Funny about the ice. Five cubes is my magic number. Here in the US it’s a cup full of ice with a splash of soda
the best poutine comes from a truck parked in a random location.
They also let you put on whatever toppings you choose
If McD’s etc has more flavour, it’s due to seasoning being added to the filler
A and W is my favourite fast food burger joint
You can pick the bun type. Their multigrain bun is amazing. It's the only time I choose multigrain over white.
@@johnp5990
At one time Harvey's wad the only chain with fresh cut fries.
(Today, Canada Dry is owned by Keurig Dr Pepper, which was spun off from Cadbury Schweppes in 2008.)
A lot of people hated the fact a company from another country (schweppes = great britain), owned one of our quintessential brands.
(the sale of Tim Hortons to a u.s. conglomerate really boosted the despisal levels...especially with the attempt to make it, just another fastfood restaurant)
Harvey's is honestly an amazing fast food restaurant. I don't go super often, but I love being able to do my own toppings, the Frings (half french fries half onion rings) as the side, and it's always cooked fresh to order.
also "and a pickle on the side". If you know, you know, fellow canucks. It's cheaper than Five Guys, more expensive than McDonalds/Burger King
and fially, the big mac stuff, he's just wrong lol. The Big Mac is hard-carried by the Big Mac sauce. Take away the sauce and you have an awful burger
I haven’t been there in years, but they had the best veggie burger ever.
Love Harvey's
My fav fast food poutine is Harveys but the best is from Costco. They use Cavendish fries and lots of cheese! Also only like $6 and enough for 2 people.
We used to have a place around here called "Fudrucker's" that was very much like that - order your burger then go to the "toppings bar" and I'd load my salad on top 😂
Anyone know if they're still around anywhere?
I loved fuddruckers too. they went out of business 😢
Harvey's definitely has the best fast food poutine that I've tried. The buffalo chicken one os delicious. They also have fantastic milk shakes. Im glad there's a Harvey's a couple minutes away from me.
