    This documentary is a shining light to people obsessed with money. These athletes and coach live very simple lives yet have no signs of stress or problems associated with our money obsessed lives. Very inspiring

    The biggest secret is the hardship. This same example, but in a different sport has existed in Brazil. They have produced the best football players and are 5 times world champions. It is also because of the hardship these kids are born into and this being their only way out. They stay focused and dedicate all their time to achieving their dream. Why are black american basketball players so good? Same reason. They are born into poor areas and difficult situations. Their desire to succeed is soo great that they develop an amazing training discipline and focus.

      I don't think it's as simple as that although there is some correlation. Germany has 4 world cups and I highly doubt they lived in poverty. The majority of NBA players did not come out of poverty. It can be said in its majority of boxers though.

      Surely there are hardworking and poverty stricken people in other parts of the world and why don't they exceed in running? Also why do Jamaicans exceed mainly in running, not boxing or other sports? Hardship is not the secret.

      flow is the meaningful way, but if your killing your training in the favela in Brazil, then you just stop "training", because of recovery, but if you train in flow, you balance ability with performance, to increase meaning training sessions within a month, six months, etc. with controlled hard training intervals

    I've been a distance runner for nearly 30 years, so I admire the spirit of this. Coghlan and many of the Kenyan greats from back in the day were my idols. I imagined I was these guys as a young boy "racing" the roads and trails alone around my childhood home. I only wish America currently had a bit more of this early development training culture and desire from the runners.

    inspiration one! When you run barefoot you absorb the ground below by bending at the forefoot, bending at the ankle, bending at the knee and at the hip. All of this four points absorb the impact and then all four points spring back giving you a very powerful and smooth running style. the hard kenya way!
    i love dat

However the Tarahumara tribe are different style of runners in that they seem to only run in ultra distance races.

    Reality is that they have better glutes and hips which drive people to run with longer strides. If they are gifted genetically, then they can exploit that while they are young. If you haven't got it, it will be too late by the time you develop your glutes, hips, hamstrings and techniques. That is how this cycle of athletics gets to be a never ending one.

    • @dasaggyballman45
      @dasaggyballman45 8 років тому +4

      Well, to make an olympic final maybe, but there are a lot of contradictions to running and physiques that there are still great runners that dont match the "runner body type," take for example prefontaine who was very small and had one leg shorter than the other, or Usain Bolt a tall sprinter vs short justin gatlin. You can blame genetics on not being a good runner but it really comes down to training and mentality.

Jeptoo is one of the highest profile Kenyan athletes to fail a doping test, and her case comes weeks after the release of a damaging report into doping in Kenya. The report said that banned substances have become easily available to runners in the East African country, where there are no effective doping controls.David Okeyo and Jackson Tuwei, who are vice presidents of Athletics Kenya, told The Associated Press that Jeptoo's "A" sample taken in an out-of-competition test in Kenya on Sept. 25 showed traces of the blood-boosting drug".

    • 'There are some doctors who approach athletes 'Matthews Kisorio, the highest-profile Kenyan to have tested positive, has claimed that many of his countrymen are using illegal performance-enhancers. Yes, there must be training, but they also have Kenyan DNA and genetics that's indigenous to their homeland! The Europeans and Americans don't. Nor is there any comparison in lifestyle that focuses on running at such a young age.

  • @brendanphillips7018
    @brendanphillips7018 10 років тому +6

    Prof Mike Boit's comments on genetics and tradition of excellence are key to the so called "secret".
    In Australia we love our swimming, cricket, rugby and tennis so we do well at these sports. Eastern Europeans are unbeatable in gymnastics, small country Jamaica running hot and Brazil with soccer etc. As Prof Boit said, Genetically there is more similarity between some African's and Europeans than there is between some Europeans themselves!!!
    So skin colour has nothing to do with it for all those who think there is. India and Pakistan can beat Australia and England in cricket and vice versa. It's more about the mind and community expectations which is why we see the host nation of any Olympic Games winning more medals than in any other before and after.
    So for those who hold that skin colour has anything to do with it, check your closet racist mindset for what it is.. ignorant bigotry.

    I dis agree with the notion that brother Callum McNall has suddenly produced Kenyan Olympians, and marathon World record holders. I am seeing a guy who thinks he has developed and natured talent in Kenya that is flawed. The fact is Kenyans are motivated by the need to get themselves out of poverty and the fact that east Africans are just good at long distance running and its a fact. I can see brother Callum want to credit himself with the success of East African athlets it does not hold .kenyans are just excellent at long distance marathon running .

    aburn life is good too but it's also the place to see corruption I never saw anybody snatching the ladies pulses in the country life or using illegal drugs so I believe country life is the best also according to my observation the children performed better academicly than the city children I guess it was because they didn't have destruction in the country.

    Recently 40 Kenyan runners have been found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs. Now Kenyan runners are close to being kicked out of the Olympic Games. Forget all this "blacks' are this and "whites are that. If running applied the same drug testing as cyclists we would discover most have come from the Lance Amstrong running academy.

      +Raymond Menz i do not know if you run or how old you are..but randomly pick a 14 year old kid of the highlands in Eldoret and you would be chanceless

      I was a 4:20 miler in high school and raced marathons during the running boom. I was one of the first in this country to race triathlons. AND Ill match my 17 year old son against any drug free one you have.
      BUT this does not change the fact that 40 Kenyans have been found guilty of banned drug use.
      If running used the same testing as cycling - Kenya would be banned from the Olympic games.

      Kenyas 2016 RIO OLYMPICS womens marathon gold medallist has just been suspended for 4 years for doping.
      When are people going to stop this nonsense that Kenyas distance runners are clean.
      Kenyas drug cheats are stopping their clean athletes from running.

    Um, to me the answer looks obvious. They are skinny. Like, rail thin. It's easy to run when you are thin.

    Ummm, how about body type, lanky, skinny, no weight, lack of bone density? When I was young, I won at all sports because I couldn't even feel my weight, no weight with muscles and high energy but I knew my weakness was my lack of density in bones, I really don't drink milk. I would beat on anyone who thought they were a jock. We changed school too frequently so I had to show the kids not to mess with me, you know fighting. Boys are primitive, they won't pick a fight with you if they know you can kick their ass in sports. I was so fast, within a week the whole school knew not to challenge me in front of their girlfriends, lol. One school I showed them too late and a brat fat kid wanted to fight me. Within a month he faded away because he knew I was just too athletic and fast. I think I weighed 100 lbs almost through high school. Look at the Kenyans, no weight, stick figures, like a cheetah or greyhound.

    Look at the surface they are running! soft!! and they stay injuryfree!!! then why in the f**king he** are you runinning on tarmac? ok, IF you have a better time in the marathon than Haile, Kipchoge and so on, then go on, run on that fu**ing tarmac, get injured and sit on a stationary bike for 3-4-5 months, sounds fun.
