This documentary is a shining light to people obsessed with money. These athletes and coach live very simple lives yet have no signs of stress or problems associated with our money obsessed lives. Very inspiring
The biggest secret is the hardship. This same example, but in a different sport has existed in Brazil. They have produced the best football players and are 5 times world champions. It is also because of the hardship these kids are born into and this being their only way out. They stay focused and dedicate all their time to achieving their dream. Why are black american basketball players so good? Same reason. They are born into poor areas and difficult situations. Their desire to succeed is soo great that they develop an amazing training discipline and focus.
I don't think it's as simple as that although there is some correlation. Germany has 4 world cups and I highly doubt they lived in poverty. The majority of NBA players did not come out of poverty. It can be said in its majority of boxers though.
+Christopher Gonzalez Surely there are hardworking and poverty stricken people in other parts of the world and why don't they exceed in running? Also why do Jamaicans exceed mainly in running, not boxing or other sports? Hardship is not the secret.
flow is the meaningful way, but if your killing your training in the favela in Brazil, then you just stop "training", because of recovery, but if you train in flow, you balance ability with performance, to increase meaning training sessions within a month, six months, etc. with controlled hard training intervals
I've been a distance runner for nearly 30 years, so I admire the spirit of this. Coghlan and many of the Kenyan greats from back in the day were my idols. I imagined I was these guys as a young boy "racing" the roads and trails alone around my childhood home. I only wish America currently had a bit more of this early development training culture and desire from the runners.
13:49 This was priceless! Watching Bro. Colm's facial expression was absolutely priceless! All of the hard work from both coach and student paying off at the end must be one of the most rewarding feelings in the world.
Beautiful video. Loved the scenes and people and message and AWESOME music (47:07 gave me full-body goosebumps). Very well-edited and told. I watched the first part before my morning run, and the rest as I ate my post-workout meal :)
The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is all but over and this documentary was excellent in giving an understanding of the development of the Kenyan athletes. It features David Rudisha, 800m specialist - well worth watching. Thank you!
inspiration one! When you run barefoot you absorb the ground below by bending at the forefoot, bending at the ankle, bending at the knee and at the hip. All of this four points absorb the impact and then all four points spring back giving you a very powerful and smooth running style. the hard kenya way! i love dat
Great documentary! These great athletes are so inspirational. Not just in there sport but there way of life. We in America take everything for granted. We need to develop the mindset the people do. Once again great video
I've been looking for this docu for over a year, certainly before David Rudisha won Olympic Gold on the 9th of August last year and in a world record time and with 6 or 7 runners in the race posting personal bests. Great to watch this in retrospect. Rudisha is an awesome athlete. Thanks @Robbie Fitzgibbon
Thank You very much for uploading Robbie. I saw the trailer over a year ago, but couldn't find this since I don't live in the UK. I run 800m and David Rudisha is such a good role model to look up to. Any other athletics documentaries you can suggest I also enjoyed the other BBC documentary about John Akii Bua
Great documentary. You should also check out the Tarahumarah tribe and the Rarámuri. The Mexican runners that routinely run 200+ miles at a time usually barefoot! Easily the greatest distance runners on earth!
bill k The Tarahumarah tribe have run in and in some cases won many ultramarathons(50-100mi) in the USA. I believe the Kenyans are the greatest marathon distance runners in the world no doubt. However the Tarahumara tribe are different style of runners in that they seem to only run in ultra distance races.
Always knew that exerting yourself was innefficient and probably also dangerous. Running is easy, if it's hard you're doing it wrong. I love their mentality
you have to train within flow to balance ability with some challenge to continue to train mingfully, over period of time with only some controlled intervals of maximum achievement,
Mike Boit summarizes it all very well, mental agility, desire to win, setting high standards and a good coach to give you framework. i am a business coach and i agree with all he said.
Reality is that they have better glutes and hips which drive people to run with longer strides. If they are gifted genetically, then they can exploit that while they are young. If you haven't got it, it will be too late by the time you develop your glutes, hips, hamstrings and techniques. That is how this cycle of athletics gets to be a never ending one.
Well, to make an olympic final maybe, but there are a lot of contradictions to running and physiques that there are still great runners that dont match the "runner body type," take for example prefontaine who was very small and had one leg shorter than the other, or Usain Bolt a tall sprinter vs short justin gatlin. You can blame genetics on not being a good runner but it really comes down to training and mentality.
what do coaches feel when they watch their athletes winning and losing? my coach is upset because i lost my first match, but he stands proudly as i picked up my first medal. i really want to understand how he felt
Distance training or whatever u call it cross country is hard in it self, u can train hard like everybody else but who out there is willing to train their athletes right... in order for them to perform their best
The show host mentions some key elements at the end of the documentary and lists diet as one of the aspects that make Kenyans different--but what about it? I didn't hear about food, or did I miss something? Great documentary by the way, I really appreciate it :D
beautiful relationship with the athletes - I wish I'd had someone like this and not someone who screams and yells at you which as an introvert embarrassed me.
I agree with your EPO comment as you can see from the recent exposure on Rita 'Jeptoo' "STELLENBOSCH, South Africa -- Marathon runner Rita Jeptoo's positive doping test was for EPO, two senior Kenyan athletics officials said Monday. Running long distances races have to be something you do everyday since five years old or younger going to school wasn't school bus so 3 miles is 6 miles a day back and from and that isn't enough schools make students run around the block every time for a consequences or any time a lesson starts running never stops in my school days.
Wow!We love u haters, recently the research of doping in kenyan athletes was carried out,dd u hear of anyone who was found wth doping? The spirit of kenyans wll nt b shaken n we r ready 4 de Rio Olympics.
So far this Olympics 2 Kenyan coaches have been sent home. One of them for pretending he was an athlete and taking the piss test for the athlete. The other one for trying to bribe an official to tell him when the random drug tests would happen. Hmm sounds like state sponsored doping to me...
Kenya's Matthews Kisorio doped because he 'wasn't the only one' • 'When you run, you run so smooth with more stamina' • 'There are some doctors who approach athletes 'Matthews Kisorio, the highest-profile Kenyan to have tested positive, has claimed that many of his countrymen are using illegal performance-enhancers. Kisorio, who has competed in world cross-country championships and ran the third fastest half-marathon ever, told the German broadcaster ARD last year that he took illegal drugs "because everyone told me, I wasn't the only one - and none of the others got caught for doping".
I dont know is they are "born to run" the difference between kenyans and the tarahumara is that kenyans run so one day they can make money and the tarahumaras are really born to run and they run because they love it and is part of their lives.
Ah the Kenyans are running with compassion for themselves and their families, it's an attempt to help themselves and help others. So I suppose the Kenyans and ultra peaceful community driven tarahumara are the same.
There are great runners almost every where in the world but it's a life time thing most good runners are from the country side not city life because a burn life is very different roads are busy with vehicles country life was not many vehicles the cities are crowded too.
Yes, there must be training, but they also have Kenyan DNA and genetics that's indigenous to their homeland! The Europeans and Americans don't. Nor is there any comparison in lifestyle that focuses on running at such a young age.
Prof Mike Boit's comments on genetics and tradition of excellence are key to the so called "secret". In Australia we love our swimming, cricket, rugby and tennis so we do well at these sports. Eastern Europeans are unbeatable in gymnastics, small country Jamaica running hot and Brazil with soccer etc. As Prof Boit said, Genetically there is more similarity between some African's and Europeans than there is between some Europeans themselves!!! So skin colour has nothing to do with it for all those who think there is. India and Pakistan can beat Australia and England in cricket and vice versa. It's more about the mind and community expectations which is why we see the host nation of any Olympic Games winning more medals than in any other before and after. So for those who hold that skin colour has anything to do with it, check your closet racist mindset for what it is.. ignorant bigotry.
I agree, but the fact that this facility is at a high altitude should help. You will develop your oxygen reception just by living there, and running will be more effective training. I'm sure that's a factor, but they are succesful because they work hard. Just like anyone else.
I dis agree with the notion that brother Callum McNall has suddenly produced Kenyan Olympians, and marathon World record holders. I am seeing a guy who thinks he has developed and natured talent in Kenya that is flawed. The fact is Kenyans are motivated by the need to get themselves out of poverty and the fact that east Africans are just good at long distance running and its a fact. I can see brother Callum want to credit himself with the success of East African athlets it does not hold .kenyans are just excellent at long distance marathon running .
Too bad this is yet another documentary where you don't learn much beyond the "follow your dream" and "train, train, train" usual stuff. Not a whole lot of "secrets" in this documentary.
Well if you payed attention in the way that he coached you can learn a lot. Like taking it easy most of the training and learning the foundation from an early age and not burning yourself out. Or just the running culture of east Africa.
There is no secret. 1. Kenya and poor people run on natural soft surface. 2. Run with sandal or BF that strengthen foot and promote correct mid/forefoot striking. 3. They run everyday every hour with manual labor. 4. Huge pool of high performance runners. USA,UK,AUS,EU is getting too soft, fat, and overweight
Secret = large amounts of steroids... So far in Rio Kenya has had 2 coaches sent home. The first one tried to bribe officials to tell him when the random drug tests would happen. The second one got sent home for posing as one of the athletes and taking the piss test and forging documents... It's state sponsored doping. It's that simple.
Holo Leo I would greatly improve if I took steroids. But I am not a world class runner to start with. If you take a world class runner and you give them steroids, they will always beat the world class runners who don't have steroids.
aburn life is good too but it's also the place to see corruption I never saw anybody snatching the ladies pulses in the country life or using illegal drugs so I believe country life is the best also according to my observation the children performed better academicly than the city children I guess it was because they didn't have destruction in the country.
Recently 40 Kenyan runners have been found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs. Now Kenyan runners are close to being kicked out of the Olympic Games. Forget all this "blacks' are this and "whites are that. If running applied the same drug testing as cyclists we would discover most have come from the Lance Amstrong running academy.
+Satch Flight I was a 4:20 miler in high school and raced marathons during the running boom. I was one of the first in this country to race triathlons. AND Ill match my 17 year old son against any drug free one you have. BUT this does not change the fact that 40 Kenyans have been found guilty of banned drug use. If running used the same testing as cycling - Kenya would be banned from the Olympic games.
Kenyas 2016 RIO OLYMPICS womens marathon gold medallist has just been suspended for 4 years for doping. When are people going to stop this nonsense that Kenyas distance runners are clean. Kenyas drug cheats are stopping their clean athletes from running.
Ummm, how about body type, lanky, skinny, no weight, lack of bone density? When I was young, I won at all sports because I couldn't even feel my weight, no weight with muscles and high energy but I knew my weakness was my lack of density in bones, I really don't drink milk. I would beat on anyone who thought they were a jock. We changed school too frequently so I had to show the kids not to mess with me, you know fighting. Boys are primitive, they won't pick a fight with you if they know you can kick their ass in sports. I was so fast, within a week the whole school knew not to challenge me in front of their girlfriends, lol. One school I showed them too late and a brat fat kid wanted to fight me. Within a month he faded away because he knew I was just too athletic and fast. I think I weighed 100 lbs almost through high school. Look at the Kenyans, no weight, stick figures, like a cheetah or greyhound.
Look at the surface they are running! soft!! and they stay injuryfree!!! then why in the f**king he** are you runinning on tarmac? ok, IF you have a better time in the marathon than Haile, Kipchoge and so on, then go on, run on that fu**ing tarmac, get injured and sit on a stationary bike for 3-4-5 months, sounds fun.
This documentary is a shining light to people obsessed with money. These athletes and coach live very simple lives yet have no signs of stress or problems associated with our money obsessed lives. Very inspiring

The secret is the humility of the Kenyan athletes.
It has been written that, " a Kenyan is good because they are brought up with discipline, respect and pride, in their heritage and themselves."
they're the best and still so humble! people have a lot to learn from them
Thank you for uploading this. Very inspiring. Their humility, hard work and integrity of character make such an impression:)
These people are so humble and down to earth and when it comes to running they explode ..
Must watch Documentary for any human being, in general..truly amazing
Oh thanks for uploading this so much man! I saw the trailer for this such a long time ago and now I can finally watch it.
Such happy people and always smiling and laughing. I don't notice any pressure.

I think this is fantastic
No i agree the secrte of ethiopian and keniya athlete is only hard training on high altiutid weather and they don't have another secret.
They are exquisite to watch :)
Truly amazing...
Wow great video love to watch from India

Stfu you sound mad
The idea he is giving is that they exercise more everyday and they are growing in hard living situation so they are not soft people.
Lol idiot
Connell , worlds best coach
Guys come on, he loves coaching athletes and is very good at it, nothing else!
Stipri valia ir didelė disciplina
what do coaches feel when they watch their athletes winning and losing?
my coach is upset because i lost my first match, but he stands proudly as i picked up my first medal. i really want to understand how he felt
the priest must have some special skill and is so modest,.
nice doc

Mark Boit, as akenyan i cant take no 2 as an answer in athletes,i cant just bear it,we are used to winning not as a proffersion, but a habit.
Beautiful
Wow. It's amazing how coach-able they are. I mean you can't be a champion if you don't understand what you're told.
Because they train very hard and they have mountains to
The show host mentions some key elements at the end of the documentary and lists diet as one of the aspects that make Kenyans different--but what about it? I didn't hear about food, or did I miss something?
Great documentary by the way, I really appreciate it :D
RUNNING IS THE KEY TO WORLD PEACE
kenyans are amazing athletes
The secret is the Spirit of God in Africans. Gen 1:26
We give God thanks. Amen.
Love it
beautiful relationship with the athletes - I wish I'd had someone like this and not someone who screams and yells at you which as an introvert embarrassed me.
No problem at all!
Love watching that Priest training up the world class runners topped up on EPO ha ha.
that is bull shit, tell me a few kenyan athletes who were caught using epo! I cannot recall any!
I agree with your EPO comment as you can see from the recent exposure on Rita 'Jeptoo'
"STELLENBOSCH, South Africa -- Marathon runner Rita Jeptoo's positive doping test was for EPO, two senior Kenyan athletics officials said Monday. Kenya's Matthews Kisorio doped because he 'wasn't the only one'

It very high stakes, of course they will dope up earn more. Doping enhance what whats already there. We should stop head in sand and let them dope up.
Raymond Menz very hard.
Kenyas 2016 RIO OLYMPICS womens marathon gold medallist has just been suspended for 4 years for doping.
When are people going to stop this nonsense that Kenyas distance runners are clean.
Kenyas drug cheats are stopping their clean athletes from running.
Um, to me the answer looks obvious. They are skinny. Like, rail thin. It's easy to run when you are thin.
..makes hunting more interesting..lol
I think u have an idea
Look at the surface they are running! soft!! and they stay injuryfree!!! then why in the f**king he** are you runinning on tarmac? ok, IF you have a better time in the marathon than Haile, Kipchoge and so on, then go on, run on that fu**ing tarmac, get injured and sit on a stationary bike for 3-4-5 months, sounds fun.
Wenn man in Deutschland läuft wird man ausgelacht - das ist das Problem.
Laufen passt nicht zum reichen Deutschland.
