What a week !! Well done getting back into HM training. I've got my 2nd ever HM next Sunday and managed a 68k week last week including a 10 mile race where I got a 10 minute PB. Good luck for the coming weeks !!
Lots of quality in there, ive heard valencia is a quick course but i love amsterdam. I pulled out of london due to injury last week, just ran 11 miles this week after a lay off, still sore but hoping im on the mend. Love the channel, keep upp the good work
I’m running the big half today, and this was the perfect video to get me excited for running it this morning! Congrats on 30k Ben, keep up the good work 🎉
Video idea for next time: do the same walk through of the week, but talk about how you build each workout in a way so people can adapt it to their own level of training. Why, how, how long, what kind of pace etc Really liked this vid though😊
Yep agree. I’m looking to slowly build to an ingebritsen week as my normal week, but everything is 50% dose. Which means his 160km week, I can squeeze into 70-80km.
Mate your progress and current level is astounding. I'd love to be anywhere even close in a couple of years. I'm doing the Big Half this Sunday, hoping for sub 1:35
Thanks for the insight! I look up to those that are able to achieve such a consistently quick pace. I can definitely take a few things from your training and apply to my own objectives, so thanks a lot Ben!
I was went from runni ng 4 to 5 or 6 times and my body was protesting already. Very impressive training Ben! Love to get inspired by your achievements 🙏🏃♂️
Awesome content. Keep ‘em coming, so informational. I do triathlon so my mileage is a lot less than half of yours but it can be scalable to fit people’s needs. Thanks
Really like this kind of video Ben as I'm hoping to re-visit the half marathon distance at some point as my PB is several years old so nuggets of info on training and your insights are really useful. Have a good week
Pretty amazing. I’m a slightly overweight runner who is trying to improve and break my personal goals, which are to break 23 mins for 5k, 48 mins for 10k and 1:50 for half marathon. My training is ramping up and I’m now doing 4 runs a week. 2X 10k, 1 longer run between 15-20K, plus 5k parkrun on a Saturday. That’s a lot for me with a busy life and two kids. My ten year old is a great little runner. He trains 6 days a week and is hoping for a 41 minute 10k in October in the Wirral 10k 😀
@@Ozzy1984_ the very best of luck! I’m aiming for sub 1:45 at end October but given how I felt at the end of my first half marathon, that remains very much in the balance 😂
Good luck in Copenhagen. I did the Antrim Coast half on Sunday in 2:08 which wasn't bad considering I couldn't train much this summer due to shin splints. I'm doing the Ealing Half marathon at the end of September where I hope to go under 2 hrs. Love the new word seshhold. You mentioned in a previous video that you 'live with' or 'manage' or words to that effect, shin splints. Can you talk about that some more please? I find that as soon as I add in any intensity mine flare up.
This was a great recap of your week! Really nice to see how you build your program.. I am doing the CPH half as well.. maybe I will see you there it would be great with a small chat before you leave me in the dust at the starting line 😄
Yes!! These are the videos that we are looking for! Weekly debriefs would go super well. How did you find out where your threshold is? How long till you were sure and what is it in terms of your HR?
Love these kind of video were you go through the workouts one by one. It gives a better idea of how actual running programs are applied. I was wondering if you include faster interval work later in your blocks? Or do you stick mostly to the threshold pace work? Great work!
Nice Ben. Thanks for sharing. I was just wondering if you do any cadence specific work on your easy days because I saw on your long run Strava said your cadence was 168 spm. Could be an area of untapped gains for your running
Fascinating! 🤔 I am implementing small elements of the double threshold days. I started with using the bike first…so run and then bike later to get the same effect without the impact stress for now. Will then transition. But definitely can feel how the motor is changing quickly. Injury is the primary concern right now with this approach. Do you take any supplements for bone health etc?
With the your double threshold sessions, as the block goes on do you progress the intensity of the session eg: from 3:15 to 3:10 or increase the volume of reps as you feel like your lactate threshold or threshold “effort” has improved from these sessions? Great video as always Ben🙌🏻
Usually I see a small increase in the speed. I usually keep the threshold work fairly consistent but add in a few higher intensity speed sessions say once every 2/3 weeks :)
Hi Ben, found this breakdown really interesting and have followed your channel for a while now. Other than your times (which have improved significantly btw) I’ve noticed that you look a lot stronger than when you started out. I presume you do dedicated S+C as part of your training and just wanted to find out more about how you fit it around your running. Any plans to make a video about that?
Great training Ben. Crazy mileage. I would never get close to that with little ones and work. Mind the body though. My question is, have you run any half marathons or similar distance events only two weeks apart? And if so how would you schedule your training for the two weeks in between to try and race your best. For example if 1st race was Sunday 28th August and you would like to race again 11th September. Two good races that I had hoped to tackle both.
Thanks for the information. I really enjoyed the breakdown of your week. How do you choose the number/distance/time of intervials for your double threshold days? Are you aiming for a certain amount of time at threshold pace or distance covered?
Seshold. Great new word for the running lexicon. A really interesting walk through your training week. Great Vlog idea. One question. Why do you set your Strava to kilometres but then write '10 miles to start the week'? Do you think in miles, km or both? As old school we always think in miles and have to do some maths to follow you young uns 😀
Hey Ben have you ever done a video about your transition to training and youtubing full time? Would be really cool to hear what you were doing before, how you made the decision to go full time, etc
With regard to the "double threshold" days made popular by "the Norwegians". This method may well work for Jacob but at the recent European championships the other Norwegian runners hardly scorched the track! It may well be that Jacob is performing at the level he is not because of his specific training but because of other factors - inherited physiological characteristics, years of training since his early teens, wonderful support system etc. If this method was some sort of magical "silver bullet" all Norwegian runners would be world beaters.
Completely agree that majority of Jacob's performance is due to inherited physiology and support system he has around him. I expect double threshold works for other people as it allows them to increase their volume of training without doing too many high intensity sessions or just long runs at plodding pace. So they are able to maintain some speed and volume with *potentially* less risk of injury= consistency. And consistency= improvement! Just my thoughts!
I’m jealous of how little elevation you get throughout the week! I’ll easily hit 824m by 40 miles because I live in a ridiculously hilly place (Sheffield) 😂
I find I need water if I go out for any run longer than about an hour. You have quite a few longer sessions of 1.5 - 2 hrs. Even though some are recovery runs, I'm just curious if you take hydration with you, and if so what method? If not, then do you just rehydrate when you get home? Thanks for the great content!
What are your taper plans? Do you do the last big session 10 days out and then maybe small threshold session in the week of HM, or what is your strategy in general?
I expect to finish my first half marathon training on June 30… I do 3 runs per week (4 if I have interval sessions), mostly easy runs of building up to that distance. However, my first half marathon race is still in November. What can / should I do in the remaining 4 months?
By the way, I notice you've got a privacy zone set up on Strava but it's more visible on the video itself (presumably as you're looking at your own feed).
@BenIsRunning I have just done a 1:17 half and am looking for really how to get to that next step, I have upped my weekly mileage to 100k, do you think increasing the mileage is a key attribute to running sub 1:10 ?
I been following you long time. But cph-half will be our first race 'together'. What fascinate me most - it seems like you never get mentally tired? How it's possible? I predict you run 66:59 in good weather. See you and thanks for videos.
What's your height and weight? I've been running since March and have lost 6lbs but I like donuts too much so haven't lost anymore. I know if I got down to normal levels for my height I'd probably go a few minutes faster. Just curious 🤷♂️
Did you think about doing a lab test to perfectly work out your anaerobic threshold? That would probably make your training (especially these main threshold double sessions) even more effective, since you had the exact pace/ heartrate to train at!
Yes I’d love to. I am however a big advocate for running to feel so that on days when your a little tired you don’t overdo it when trying to hit specific paces if that makes sense
