My coach in basketball (late 70's early 80's ) used to say: The zone be punished from far and breaks by near. [I hope my english is good to explain that ]
Thanks! We have 1 breakdown like this every week. You can check the past ones under the Breakdowns playlist. I made one about Sloukas joining PAO last summer, too
You are genuine "Basketikos" guy. In Greece we call Basketikos the few who understand the sport perfectly. I have been watching basketball since 1987(of course). But my analysis is non existent. I simply shout "yes" when we score, and "no" when we don't. In football i can analyze my team, the tactics and each player. But after each basketball game i need a "Basketikos" to explain to me why the hell we lost. It will sound not true, but i am close to 50 years old now and i believe that only 1 in 5 fans fully understands basketball. Even though it is only 5 vs 5 compared to 11 vs 11, basketball looks more complex than football to me.
the analysis was great. You could talk about Vildoza and Hernangomez. They were important in the comeback for Pao. Real lost the game because they couldn't adapt to Pao's defense. Like always, it's better to make shots in the end of the game than in the start. They won that way with OLY but they couldn't with PAO bcs their defense was weak.
Great work Augustas. 14 down and wih Nunn 3 fouls on the first (!!) quarter everyone thought it was done. Then Ataman (and Serelis) threw 'the defenders' in, Kalaitzakis-Juancho who along with the omnipresent Jerian and Vildoza who had the guts to step up out of literally nowhere (freakin hard on a final), managed to force real into bad decisions, start to make her feel vulnerable and eventually mentally broke her. The rest was basically clutcu leadership and ice cold blood from Sloukas and Nunn. I was inside, lifetime experience. Great work, again
Great commentary, man. The difference was that Pao and Ataman never pushed the panic button in Quarters 1 and 2. But Real panicked in the 4th quarter. They never capitalized during the minutes when Lessort or Nunn were not playing. Do you have the commentary for Pao v Fener game?
You guys can do a documantary about Pao's epic journey thoughout the season , with the ups and downs , coming from 17th place to winning it all in a year.
PAO had the 2nd biggest budget in the Euroleague this season €35m. Fenerbache had €25m, Olympiacos had €22m. The highest was Real with €42m and the lowest was Zalgiris with €13m. PAO in the 2021-2022 season was on €9.5m.
The best for Panathinaikos now begins. What Bertomeu did to us from 2012 in the semi-final with CSKA where he changed the history of basketball until now will be paid by all of them watching Panathinaikos build a new Empire in basketball. The bond that the Management-Coach-Philathletes have does not exist anywhere, this was everyone's fear and now it has returned. Sit down now everyone and see how Panathinaikos will lift the cups. Next year and from now on he will start as a favorite every year to win the Euroleague with the team he will build.
@@truthhearer6323 I don't think he necessarily meant next year, the discussion is about the future of Panathinaikos in general. Sloukas will play next year too anyway. So no need to attack people for no reason.
Great video Augustas. Keep up the great work guys and keep on bringing excellent video analysis & stats (Thinking Basketball & Baskethead style). Agree that the long Sloukas' 3 was the most important shot in the game. Just to mention, Pana & Real Madrid were the only teams in the top 6 in Off. Efficiency, Def. Efficiency & 3P% the entire season (incl. F4) Two best teams went to the final, the best team won. Go PAO ☘☘☘☘
Played the best ball in Europe over the past 3 months, got a well deserved title, with everybody contributing and being important all season and in the F4. We have been here before. This is only the beginning for the new era for Panathinaikos, and what a bang they've made already. Losing the local chip to Olympiakos seems like an impossibility, and improvements to the roster are on the cards for next season. With all things being equal a B2B will not surprise me . Awesome basketball from the best team in Europe. Congrats to all!
You had 6000 fans vs maccabi in the beginning of the season becaue of a few bad games, partizan had a terrible season but the worst attendace was 19000 against alba after a horrible season.
Great analyzing right there man, thank you!! It seemed like Tavares was out of space after picking up very early fouls in the 1st, but I did not realize he exposed Real defensively that much. Going from -14 to +18 against this year's Real was a statement made from the team. Get ready for next year!!
Very good game analysis. I totally agree with your highlighting the key factors, especially the obscure (not so obscure) tremendous job by Grant in breaking Madrid's confidence by positioning himself always in the right spot and disrupting their plays in the 2nd half. Of course you don't beat Real without adding the monster preformance from Sloukas, the killer instinct of Nunn and the gigantinc amount of work and physicality by Lessort. But key factor to boost pana's odds and disrupt Real's flawless offense was Grant's defense because in the end Real helped Pana with all that 3 point shooting rage, while you have the most dominant center in europe, not to mention that his backup is himself one of the top centers. A team does that when there's a dramatic drop in confidence, speaking of an extraterrestrial roster as Real had it means that the other team got under your skin and into your brain. Grant was the initiator of that process. In addition we can say that Ataman put Mateo in his pocket and honestly, while I was rooting for Pana, as a basketball watcher it was painful to see a team like Real, after a such a dominant regular season, havin nothing to answer but threepointers with everyone trying to be the hero and no actual team play nor finding mismatches or any kind of size advantage. They looked like an nba team. And that's not a compliment.
As always, another great video, thanks for providing informative content. You mentioned Kalaitsakis played an important role in defence which helped PAO to the title. In an interview after the game, Kalaitsakis said that Sloukas had managed to persuade Ataman to give him (Kalaitsakis) more minutes on the court. PAO's Euroleague gross budget seems to have skyrocketed from €9.5m in 2021/2022 (2nd lowest) to €35m in 2023/2024 (2nd highest) - how much has this played a deciding factor? There's a slight correlation between budget vs results (although Armani has yet to make the Final 4 spending €30m+).

That's a real basketball analysis. Congrats! The fact that Real Madrid bet almost everything in 3-point shots cost them the match for both PAO's and European basketball's shake. Of course, we love clutch threes and all that stuff, but European basketball is way more multidimensional than a 3-point contest. Don't get me wrong: Real Madrid played the most multidimensional basketball during the whole season, but in the final they lost their balance and that gave PAO the opportunity to get the trophy as the 2nd best team of the season. I'm extremely happy for PAO's comeback to the top, but I have to say that we have to help all the European powerhouses to be real powerhouses and finally keep our best talents here. Basketball in Europe is way more competitive, emotional and loud, even with way less money, talent, organization, etc. This type of basketball deserves to have players of the quality of Doncic, Jokic, Giannis, etc. We miss the money which come through hard work (from the professionals) and true support (from the fans). Let's do it!
We have to start from the very basics in Europe. 1st, we cannot have FIBA and Euroleague competing over who is the legitimate pan-Eruopean competition. We need one major competition and one minor, not 4 different ones. Then, whoever manages that competition has to ensure that the teams remain rich and able to ivnest and that the budget gaps are minimised, meaning more participation and prize money for the teams and a budget cap for player salaries. If we don't start from these then Europe will always be behind NBA and all the top European talent will be playing in the other side of the pond.
@@EverydayNormalGeek The dispute between FIBA & Euroleague has been ridiculous. I think the end of this is the most obvious and easy step. Other steps can be way more difficult. For example, a salary cap would bridge the financial gaps for bigger competition but it probably would be another serious issue to the lack of top tier talent, because even now without a salary cap the richest teams in Europe can't afford NBA caliber players (with only a few exceptions). Anyway, it's not our job to find the solutions. Our job is to support our teams as fans and appreciate those professionals who will honestly try for the growth of European basketball and not just for their pockets.
Everybody would love that, but the truth is basketball is not nearly as popular in Europe so the revenue will never be there. Add to that that the countries in which it is popular enough are small markets and it's just futile. Without money you can't compete even if you can make a better product.
As the saying goes , " it can not be only an uphill road until the end ". It is bound to happened at some point to start missing threes . And for a team that won all this season games primary with 3point shots , it becames a second nature to the playing style of the players . And of course at difficult times by instict you try to do what you always do to survive. And every time you miss one the preassure gets higher , you turn deep into your nature , you miss more and that snowball until you reach the point of no return . Remember last year , they stole / won the tittle with a 3point shot from a guy who had zero points and came in the last second from the bench . The only persn who will have made them won this final is Gabriel Deck . At least two levels higher class from campazo .more mental player . more balanced and with higher ability to read the enemy defence and always a solid shooting hand . But ce est la vie ! pame gia to 8o tou xronou !
Excellent game analysis!! Congratulations. The conclusion of this game is: Don’t ever feel certain that you are gonna win, until the last moment of the game.
So I think I understood the game a bit differently. I believe Real lost due to there problem to adapt to a different game. I don't want to make it too long, but Real big guys where forced into several fouls, which Pao obviously took advantage of as much as they could under the basket, shown at the end with 3 guys being fouled out. Also lets not be unfair and say Pao where playing a dangerous game, at least to me. Pao was closing in there players as much as they could, behind the 3 point line, risking the 3 point shot from a team with the 3rd best shot in the league. They saw Real shots where not going in and Pao even switched at one point to Zone in the 3 quarter, if I'm not mistaken, which shows there obvious tactic, saying to there faces Shoot, that's all you're gonna get!! but you're gonna miss (by all means leaving someone open doesn't mean leaving them completely, but focusing your mind always on Tavares and the big guys as much as you can and the rebound). I think Real Coach was stupid for allowing his players to continue a bad psychological game with themselves, he should have changed it up, slowed it down, and adjusted the system to the big guys. Real barely missed under the basket and whatever the missed most of them where fouls. I give it to Ataman though he saw the issue with the Spaniards and hit the nail so hard they're ego felt it. I mean people who have played professionally know that you cant stop shooting even if its the right thing to do, EGO, that's where the coach comes in!!! Congrats PAO welcome back to the top!!!!!
Just before they started shooting and losing 3's, Pao players had deflected 3/4 attempts to play inside. In 2/4 instances they stole the pass towards Tavares. So afterwards they got scared (momentarily of course) to pass the ball inside and they started to shoot threes. Pao Players, and you are right, after the 2nd or the 3rd missed three from Real they gave them space to shoot while closing in on the inside. There you are absolutelly right, their coach should had intevene and should had calm them down, but I think he "religiously" beleived that the old legendary guard will deliver.

I don't like these Lithuanians because they were unfair with most dominant Euroleague team while this team had hard time after Obradovic era. So for sure I'll not support them now that we are on top of the Euroleague. BUT, I'm objective. Great analysis and amazing edit.
He’s a good coach but at the same time, they have great talent on their roster. Pao made good adjustments to be fair. But we will beat them with half their budget. Gate 7.
Spending big money alone does not bring success. It is important to be the kind of coach who can make the club owners spend money on players the coach wants in the club. For instance, Sloukas would not join Pana if it was not for Ataman. Grant was also playing for Telekom in Turkey last year and Ataman knew his potential. It is also important that a coach can manage the star players with huge ago. Look at Milano and Barca who are big spenders. They were not even in F4.

@@NikosNikos-dr7wv He had talks but things are different there, you can't be the same type of coach you are here. European coaches especially old school ones, were above the players and are used that what they saw is law, everyone should play strictly how they dictate etc, which is not how the NBA operates. Now Ataman is way more modern and his coaching style is very similar to what NBA coaches do(let your talented players dictate the offense, but inspire/convince them to play hard on defense), the only thing that would hold him back in my opinion is his antics on and off the court which wouldn't vibe with the NBA.
As someone who was in love with European basketball but in the past decade started watching systematicaly the NBA, i have to point out that the talent gap is immense. This excellent defence (for European standards/personel) that leaves wide open 3s would get utterly demolished in the NBA. That's not to throw shade to European basketball, just an observation. It's no coincidence that most of these players that are invaluable in Europe were somewhere between the bench and the stands when they "played "in the NBA (Nunn, Hezonia etc).
During the regular season Euroleague is a better product to watch but once playoff time come the NBA is on a completely different level, not only talent wise but also in execution. There are really good players in Euroleague but they are not good enough to have big roles in Nba and they can easily exploited on defense while in Europe the game fit them better and they cen showcase more of their game.
Pana players fought much harder. On defense particularly. Real missed wide open shots while Pana players started to hit all including bad looking and/or long distance shots. That was not mainly about the coach on tactic side. Maybe on motivation side Ergin deserves credit.

I agree. pao was not able to attack on zone defense. Sloukas creativity brought the game.
That shot was pure iso skill and confidence without any set plays. Dagger
That 3pointer was what seperates very good players from great players.

Yeap, it's times like these you want those players to make the difference.
My coach in basketball (late 70's early 80's ) used to say: The zone be punished from far and breaks by near. [I hope my english is good to explain that ]
I honestly believe the soul of this Panathinaikos is Jerian Grant.
Great analysis, would love more videos like this!
Thanks! We have 1 breakdown like

Ergin Ataman is the best coach at the moment. Euroleaugue should of chosen him as a best coach of the year.
Great analysis , great basketball channel! Grant is exactly like legendary Panagiotis Giannakis.
Giannis: i wanna play for you, Ataman: then come to PAO
Foreshadowing
4 days later still crying from joy
the analysis was great.

Great analyzing right there man, thank you!! It seemed like Tavares was out of space after picking up very early fouls in the 1st, but I did not realize he exposed Real defensively that much. Going from -14 to +18 against this year's Real was a statement made from the team. Get ready for next year!!
Shots fired at Doc Rivers
Success does not come without spending money. There is no guarantee of success by spending money

From zero to hero within a year, that's the biggest difference between NBA and Europe. In NBA you need to plan 10 years ahead to achieve that.
Great analysis

You are to the point !Sloukas shot was the most important thing in the game and mitoglou change..
thanks a lot!

Hahah I see what you did there
So I think I understood the game a bit differently.

Obradovic had 9 titles
I don't understand why he didn't go to nba
I agree, leaving wide open threes right now in the nba is suicidal. 🤔
During the regular season Euroleague is a better product to watch but once playoff time come the NBA is on a completely different level, not only talent wise but also in execution. There are really good players in Euroleague but they are not good enough to have big roles in Nba and they can easily exploited on defense while in Europe the game fit them better and they cen showcase more of their game.
most nba players would shit themselves with this type of defense tbh
No shit Sherlock, have you seen their budgets? But if the NBA is soooooo good why is team USA losing from European countries smaller than Texas?

Pana players fought much harder. On defense particularly. Real missed wide open shots while Pana players started to hit all including bad looking and/or long distance shots. That was not mainly about the coach on tactic side. Maybe on motivation side Ergin deserves credit.
You need definitely more than just motivation to come into the final four and than to beat Real Madrid in the final in this outstanding way. It was a masterpiece of couching and teamplay!
It is serious stupidity to say that a coach who has won this cup three times in the last four years only knows how to motivate.
