Rob: Hey everybody Rob here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the PTC custom fit cabin air filter on our 2019 Infiniti QX 50. Now a cabin filter is going to do for your car what a furnace filter does for your house it's going to filter all the air coming from the outside cleaning all the particulates, debris and even those emissions coming from the other cars to clean it out before it comes through our vents. Now obviously you want to make sure that they're in working condition because we don't want to breathe all that stuff in. Because a lot of times people don't think about it but the air inside your car can actually be up to six times more polluted than the air outside because once it gets in here there's nowhere for it to go. So driving down the road all the debris that's on the road, the exhaust, allergens, everything else, it can start to build up inside. Not to mention if your filter does get clogged it can cause a lot of pressure buildup in your HVHC system which can lead to a lot of damage and expensive, costly repairs.
But this is one of those maintenance items that nobody really thinks about until somebody mentions it. You might be at the service center getting an old change and they say, "Your cabin filter is dirty would you like us to replace it" And replacing it's easy enough though there's really no need to pay anybody else to do it because you can actually check and change your cabin filter in a matter of minutes. So let's go ahead and check ours and if we need to replace it we have this one here. So I'm just going to set this up on the dash for now and we're going to move to the passenger side and open up our glove box. Now if you look inside your glove box all the way at the very edge you'll see that you're going to have a couple of these plastic push pins down there. We're just going to use that as a reference because it may be a little bit difficult to see because the liner inside of here is this felt material.
But if you come up from that push pin and just to the right there's a really small notch in this panel and you can get yourself a flat blade screwdriver, put it in that notch and you want to pry outward just enough to get that core loose. We should be able to get our finger and pull that panel out.Now behind that we're going to have this large white cover, we come to the right hand side towards the passenger side. Get your finger behind the very edge of it and pull outward and then we want to slide the cover to the right and that will expose the cabin filter. And we can just simply reach in and pull it out. One thing I do want to mention you want to pay very close attention to that arrow that's on your filter because that's going to make sure we have the airflow going in the right direction. Now obviously looking at our filter there's a major color difference here but if I actually flip our factory cover filter over you can really see how dirty it is because this is the bottom and it's still gray but if we flip back over you can see just how much dirt and everything's getting trapped in here.
If we open up the pleats you can actually see some of the larger debris in there and it's a good thing that filter's catching it at all because if this we're to get further in the system the least amount of damage it would do would be just making a lot of noise in the fan but if it did get further it could cost a lot of money to fix those things that it had caused damages to.So I would say this would be a good time to replace it. Manufacturers usually recommend around 12 to 18,000 miles but you can double check your Infiniti owner's manual if you want a more specific time. But again, we'll find the arrow that's on our new filter. Make sure it's pointing the correct direction. I'm going to just slide our new filter in place just reversing the steps that we did to take it out.
Just want to make sure you have it sitting in there correctly. Slide the filter back in, put the cover back on and put that panel back in place as well. It can be a little tricky to get them in there you don't want it to be binding up so you may just have to take it in, put it in and take it out make sure it's sitting nice and square. We're going to put this cover back in. You want to start with the cover towards the driver's side, slide that notch in first, and we're just going to push the cover in till it locks back into place. We'll do the same type of thing with that felt panel. We want to hook the driver's side in first and just rotate it back in. That's where all those clips line up. There really is no need to pay

Never spend a penny in the dealer unless you have no other choice. Dealers are licensed scammers.

The trick is to line up the tab in the front right of the filter. Not sure if the K&N has this guide tab but the standard replacement does and if rotated 180degrees to the back the housing will not close smoothly. Once lined up and in place it’s a quick fix.
