  • Murdo Ferguson, founder of Gaelfonn Records, singing a famous Lewis song. When Mary Mackenzie (Mairi Nighean Alisdair) died , her widowed husband William MacKenzie (1856 - 1908) went to join his only remaining family who had all left for Canada but he died within a year of arriving in Canada and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Thunder Bay. Before leaving Lewis he pulled out one of his teeth and buried it with his wife so at least part of him remained there. William also composed many other Gaelic songs and poems.

Murdo from Portvoller ,Point,Lewis sadly passed away in 2008-his sister Dolly i,m told by Malcolm Macdonald is still in Stornoway area
His other 4 Gaelfonn 78,s include organ backing and they are really beautiful including the popular sailor song Fali fali fali oro, sung by many a Lewisman in the 30,s onwards on their way to far flung places like N.Z.-My friend the late Alistair Macleod , cousin of the great Kitty Macleod and husband of 1950 Mod medalist Flora Campbell, was an unofficial Tong Bard 1926-2001 told me many tales of his travels and told some of the funniest jokes I ever heard !.

Murdo worked in Glasgow and was one of the best singers not to try to win Mod gold-Alan Mcrichie,J.B.Munro and Ado Matheson,s dad were also great singers who never tried for Gold.
Bill Dean Myatt of Beltona project who produced my 2 cd Gaelic 1899-1959 compilation from his records-I myself have 165 Gaelic double sided 78,s 1909-58 era and around 40 Gaelfonn tracks ,spoke to Murdo but we can,t figure out his numbering of the discs and Peter Adamson or Douglas Lorimer who made a Gaelfonn excellent cd with 4 other Murdo Fergusson tracks said he thought the recordings were re-recordings.

Does anyone know if there was a Harris connection with this song? I remember hearing it sung as a youngster where-ever there was a gathering.

Not sure but you can hear more Harris linked Gaelic 78,s - I,ve plenty-quite a few like all the great Gaelfonn 78,s Angus Macleod from Scalpay made in the 1950,s after his Mod Gold win in 1950-my friend Flora Campbell was the female medalist.
My favourite is surprisingly sung by a Sgianach,Archie Grant-Eilean na Hearach which Angus recorded 20 years later too-I,ve about 40 Gaelfonn 78 tracks and they are on cd,s.
I met John Murdo Morrison the 1965 medalist in Largs, in Tarbert 2016 where he runs the local hotel.

There might be but you'd have to do a bit of digging to know for sure. Mary Nighean Alasdair was born on 03 Aug 1856 in Garrabosd to Alexander Mac Kay and his wife Catherine MacSween. I don't know if Catherine was descended from a Scalpay MacSween. Does anyone know?
