    Wow, I’m sold. My mother’s pattern is an anxiety attack to clean. Polish gets stuck in the pattern. A Q-tip is too big to polish it out. I can scrub it out but that doesn’t pull the tarnish off. Glad you posted this video, Tarn-X looks like it was designed for my problem. Since she has one, I’m going to try using her food saver to store it. Unless a bag leaks, it should prevent tarnishing. If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, soft bags sold for storage are worth it. I’d get them from a jeweler to be sure.

    I like your safety emphasis and also your advice not to leave the TARN-X on for more than two minutes and to do multiple passes before considering the job complete. I use a silver polish or cream after getting rid of the tarnish with TARN-X, but as you didn't mention it this step may not be necessary. I am not a professional housecleaner--just a dude trying to keep his place presentable--but very much appreciate yur helpful videos.

    I've used Tarnx. And have never been happy with the results.
    My preferred method is to use a large disposable, aluminum turkey roaster. Place the item on the bottom, sprinkle with baking soda. Then, pour boiling water over it. It only takes a minute to remove the tarnish. Next, I polish with Wright's Silver Polish, wash with soap and water, and then dry.
    It smells like rotten eggs, so you need a window open.
    I used to clean for others in my younger years. Now, at 63, my body is destroyed. Arthritis up my back, hands, and feet. Be careful!

    Excellent through video. Hard to find good information like this methodically explained. I do have one question though. Is the medical mask enough? When dealing with chemical fumes, I thought something with carbon filters was needed.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Рік тому +1

      Hi Tom6254, great question, you are probably right, other masks may work better. For OSHA requirements if an SDS sheet recommends a mask, any mask will fulfill the requirement, and the cleaning business owner is required to provide one for their employees. If you are a homeowner or an independent business owner, use the mask that provides you the best peace of mind. 😍

    Did I miss this? Can you dip complicated patterns (bread basket) in tarn-x?

    • @AskAngelaBrown

      Yes you can, and you may need to use a soft tooth brush to brush the complicated patterns so the Tarn-X gets in all the nooks and crannies. Let me know how it turns out. I'm eager to hear your experience.

    I loveTarnex for heavy tarnish! I have used it on both Sterling Silver as well as Silverplate with no adverse effects. I always polish any silver with my favorite polish, Wright's Silver Cream. I order these items, Tarnex by the gallon and Wright's, on Amazon. Love the Wright's Silver Cream!

    I used Tarn-x years ago then read somewhere that it removed a microscopic layer of silver on each use. Maybe this has something to do with the 2 minute limit that I wasn't aware of at the time. But I moved on to other silver cleaners, none of which have been as fast-acting as Tarn-x. Twinkle is another product that seems faster than a lot of other brands. A current frustration is that I now live in a desert climate and my silver pieces that are out and in use appear to tarnish much faster than when I lived east of the Mississippi. Maybe the dry air? I'm going to try the Tarn-x again and see what happens. Thanks for this great review!

    Hi sometime I see silver plated items in a thrift store and it looks like someone tried to shine it and there's brush marks. Did the tarn x get left on too long and is the piece just ruined if the tarn x is left on way too long?

    Does this work on jewelry?

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, as long as it is real silver. If it is fake silver or painted silver it will tarnish it even worse or darken the silver coating.

    what do you do if you leave the product on over two minutes? Also does TarnX ever loose its potency? I have recently tried to clean a 'snake' type silver necklace which I have found out is hard to clean anyway, but it has turned grey after using tarnx. It may have been in the tarnx over 2 minutes. I try to polish after the tarnx but it will not fully come clean.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  3 роки тому +2

      If you have a silver painted or plated steel that is not true silver, it will dull the finish, not shine it. You do have to test it on an inconspicuous area first.

    What tarnish remover product, (liquid) will remove tarnish from metal springs? Being, the kind for a hobby spring horse.

    What I did with those springs, is use sand paper on the outside of the springs. It worked.

    Be sure to protect your hands and face, especially your eyes, when using Tarn-X because it is really strong. A little can cause damage to skin and eyes. Since Tarn-X is really strong, be sure not to use too much and be sure to have running water handy to rinse off the Tarn-X within a minute or so of applying it. Finally, Tarn-X stinks like rotten eggs … and it removes tarnish quickly.

    Hi Angela. Originally, I started searching online to find out if I really had to wash and dry my jewelry with warm water and soap before using Tarn-X the way the instructions tell me to. It's taking an incredibly long time and seems so redundant given I have to do it again after using the Tarn-x. You're the second video I've watched, and so far neither of you has told your listeners or shown by example that we have to wash everything w warm soap and water, then pat it completely dry before using it. It's been a long time since I've used Tarn-x, but I don't remember first washing everything (or anything) before using it. Perhaps I did, but i think I would have remembered because this is quite a lengthy process. Although, tbh, I have a lot built up to clean and my tolerance for being able to stand because of severe pain is almost nonexistent. So, I could have done it but because it didn't hurt so much to stand, it wasn't as frustrating or even memorable.
    Secondly, I was hoping to see you (or anyone) clean jewelry w gemstones either in the silver or around them. Also, a few yrs ago, I was given some handmade baby spoons that have wrapped gemstones like amethyst and smokey quartz wrapped by the thick silver wire at the tops of the spoons then twists back down the stem.
    Many years ago, I dropped a silver bracelet that had lapis in each little setting (i'm not sure what you actually call them. Technically, it's what the jeweler sets the stones in, so maybe setting does work? 😂) Anyway, to my horror, when I pulled it out of the glass cup I had the tarn-x in, most of the lapis was eaten away. In some of the settings, it literally ate half of the pieces of the lapis stones away. And, the ones that weren't as disintegrated were no longer their beautiful blue color. It was kind of a chalky white w a little blue. It was the last present given to me by my grandmother so it meant a lot to me and unfortunately doing that left a long lasting negative impact. Nonetheless, my point is, I am now terrified to clean any jewelry other than just basic silver chains. I don't know if it was because I left it in there over 2 minutes or if Tarn-x has that effect on all gems and minerals. I'm a silver jewelry person, who loves semi-precious gemstones & minerals (garnets, citrine, rose quartz, hematite, apatite etc.) Unfortunately, everything I have comes so close to the silver that I'm afraid to clean the area around the stones even with q-tips.
    Also, one necklace charm that my deceased mom gave me has a rose quartz ball surrounded by two dolphins and on one side is a map of North and South America, with attempts to squeeze in the rest of the Earth via the dolphin fins. I've been so frightened ever since the lapis incident, that I have never cleaned the pendant from my mom and it's almost black in most places, as are a lot of my earrings too. 😏 I can barely envision trying really hard to be super careful around the stones w a q-tip on regular jewelry, (it's been at least 14 years since I have cleaned anything other than just plain silver chains or bracelets due to the lapis situation. It's time!) But, like the baby spoons, there's no way to clean the silver dolphin pendant without it touching the rose quartz because of how its wrapped around it. Do you have any advice for cleaning items w the silver wrapped all around them like this?
    I'm guessing you're probably not a psychic, so there's most likely no way you would know if my mistake was leaving it in the Tarn-X too long, or if I never was supposed to put silver that has stones in it in the Tarn-X to begin with. (I'm leaning towards that, but it could easily be both.) But, the warnings and instructions on the bottle I have now don't tell me not to let it touch the gem stones. For some reason, I feel like back when I made the lapis mistake, I read the instructions afterwards and it told me not to let it touch any stones. But, that could have been in my imagination and me simply realizing I never should have just dropped the silver bracelet w the stones in it into the Tarn-x.
    It seems from this video like you mostly clean utilitarian type silver that while stunningly intricate and beautuful doesn't have the gemstone problem like jewelry. But, I'm hoping that you might also happen to know something about this subject? If so, will you please advise me on what you've learned and how to safely clean the silver that not only comes right to the edge of the stones, but especially pieces that surround the stones?
    Lastly, I saw that you used a bowl with soapy water prior to the final rinse. The instructions don't say to do that. Is that just something you learned along the way? Given that this stuff can be so destructive if it's left on too long after using it, it seems like putting the object directly into soapy water would cover any possible oversights. Is that why you do it that way? In addition to the original fear I have of destroying all my jewelry w stones and crystals in them, I was worried about possibly not getting all the Tarn-x off the jewelry by just rinsing it under cold water alone. Seeing you put your items in a bowl of soapy water is a great idea/ solution to that happening. But, I am curious what makes you choose to put it in soapy water vs just putting it into a bowl of clear water.
    I know I've asked a lot of questions, but I really hope and would appreciate it so much if you can answer them or what questions you know the answers to.
    Thank you very much.

      Hello Heidi and thanks for watching. You are correct, my specialty is not in removing tarnish from jewelry and gemstones. The tarnish removal package we offer our cleaning clients is for silver platters, gravy dishes, serving trays, silverware - things you would use to serve Thanksgiving Dinner. For specific answers to your gemstone and jewelry questions a jewelry store would be a better bet as they have specialists on staff that do exactly this all day. I'm sorry I'm not of more help. Thanks for watching though - it's great to have you here. :-)
