    I love the auger protector switch. I saved inconveniences with it. Doing Snowblowing as a business I can get more customers without having to worry over shear pins breaking when going through tough conditions and not having to worry about customers not having debris in the way. Total money making machine. Getting another machine to get a helper getting more customers to service.

      I can replace a broken shear bolt myself in about two minutes. But when the auger lock protection system malfunctions I have to take to the dealer so they can take it apart and replace the sensor. This has happened twice in the last three years. From my point of view, I'd rather replace shear bolts.

    Good video and Classic moment ! I was ready to bet my paycheck that your first attempt with branches and boxes would fail (that Honda would eat right through without damage) ! That is exactly why I will always buy Honda. They are beasts and eat through almost anything that enters their auger ! In 1991 I worked at a utility district and we had Hondas that ran through lots of gravel and rock and never had a problem. Plus the hydrostatic drive is sweet.

      After a year of owning this machine I haven’t regreted the purchase and extra cost. This is such a workhorse. I am on a farm and use it in the animal paddocks and enclosures that have hidden obstacles despite trying to keep the areas clear. I have hit frozen fire logs (thanks to the dogs), 5’ branches, and recently a horse Jolly Ball (again dogs). The machine simply shut down. But it is so powerful that the Jolly Ball was well entwined on the auger. Did get it out eventually. I love this machine!

    Happened to me today - my Honda 928 just shut down .. I knew gas was low so I refueled - still wouldn’t start - scratching my head, what is wrong - you guessed it - small piece of wood stuck in the augur … no impact on the shear pin … so I freed the augur and all was well …. Courage (and confidence) on display here!!! Thank you for sharing. You’ve forgotten more about Honda snow blowers than most know so a question for you. I too have a 1332, I’ve been trying to determine if it’s necessary to de-clutch each time when going between forward and reverse, one dealer says yes another no, the manual is vague. Just spoke with Honda and after being on hold for a considerable time they said refer to the manual which of course is vague and why I was on the phone. Would certainly appreciate your advice/expertise. Thanking you!!!

    • @JohnFrancoNH
      @JohnFrancoNH  Рік тому +1

      From my experience using many honda HS and HSS you do not need to declutch. Thats the whole point of having a hydrostatic transmission in the first place. So you can smoothly transition the drive forward and reverse with out fuss of clutching and finding gears. But just dont slam it in reverse if making the transition, do it slowly and steady.

    • @steveottavaino3804
      @steveottavaino3804 Рік тому

      @@JohnFrancoNH thank you for the response, seems a bit aggressive de-clutching constantly, can’t imagine that being particularly healthy for the belt over time. Many have said the purpose of the Hydrostatic drive is infinitely variable speed adjustment alone, my argument (and yours) is the ability not to de-clutch. A very big competitive and working advantage. Thank you for putting my mind to ease John!!! Be well.

    What do you do when it never resets? On mine, the Auger Lock Indicator light is always flashing. Even after not hitting anything. And when this happens, as soon as I engage the auger the machine shuts down. Very frustrating. I've had the auger sensor replaced twice. The machine is 3 years old with 28 hours on it.

    • @michaelafcadio
      @michaelafcadio Рік тому

      The auger protection system may prevent the premature replacement of shear bolts and I would agree it does that as designed. In three years, I've never once had to replace a broken auger shear bolt. However, instead I've had to deal with the protection system malfunctioning (twice in three years), which requires me to bring the machine into the dealer to have it taken apart and the sensor reset or replaced. Contrast that to the two minutes it would take me to replace a broken shear bolt. Furthermore, I can purchase shear bolts in bulk for a littler over $1 per bolt. In this regard, the auger protection system is a liability more than an advantage. I'd rather break and replace shear bolts than deal with an unusable snowblower during a snow storm that requires an expensive trip to the dealer to get working. In this regard, how does such a protection system make any sense?

    • @JohnFrancoNH

    I’m torn between a Honda or Ariens with tracks. Do the tracks have different positions like the Ariens? The current Ariens 28” version with tracks has 3 different positions. One of which tilts the front of the snowblower down for extra force when it comes to being flush against the ground to get through the tough snow.

    • @JohnFrancoNH

      @@steve8803 I have the 928 and I think it's under powered even after a re-jet. I do need to check the engine rpms though and maybe adjust it to run at a higher rpm. That being said, the 1332 would not fit in my garage nearly as easily and I would have jumped on a 7-24 if it was available at my local dealer. Most of my driveway is single lane, so the width isn't really a factor for me- the lighter the better for loading into a truck/mini van etc. The 928 through my dealer was $2900 before tax and the 724 would have been hundreds of dollars more than that through an online retailer.

    • @chrisE815
      @chrisE815 Рік тому

      Ariens looks neat, but they are new to the tracked game- Honda has been perfecting the tracks for decades. The biggest downside to the Ariens seems to be that it does not handle loose gravel well- I believe the pieces get stuck in the track system somehow (can't remember what the outcome is exactly). I'm sure the Ariens is much more powerful though.

    Thank you for the video, John. I have read some reviews (including on Honda's own website) where folks have complained that it is necessary for this model to go back to the dealer to be 'reset" after the auger lock protection system has been tripped. You clearly said it was easy to reset it after a 'tripping' event. Can you elaborate and perhaps speculate on what the other reviewers might have been dealing with? A Newbury neighbor.

    • @JohnFrancoNH
      @JohnFrancoNH  2 роки тому +2

      I can only speculate that the user did not cycle the key back to the off position long enough to reset the trip. But rather kept trying to key start it with out a full reset back to off.

    • @michaelafcadio
      @michaelafcadio Рік тому +1

      @@JohnFrancoNH, see my comment above regarding this. I've had to take my HSS1332ATD back to the dealer twice in three years for this issue. Cycling the key position has nothing to do with it. It doesn't matter if the it's been off for hours or days. I've even let the machine run idle for 20 minutes. Also tried repeatedly engaging the auger dozens of times in hopes it would reset. It will not reset if the sensor malfunctions or is defective. I'm annoyed that Honda would create a system to save a $1 shear bolt and two minutes time to replace with a system that needs an expensive trip to the deal to correct when it malfunctions. No thanks. I'd rather spend two minutes to replace a broken shear bolt than be without my snowblower in the middle of a snow storm. Like exactly what happened two days again when we got walloped in SW New Hampshire with 35" of snow in 24 hours.

    • @michaelafcadio
      @michaelafcadio Рік тому +1

      I'll also add that both times when the auger lock sensor malfunctioned it was not triggered by locking up the auger. Both times it happened was the same. I just finished clearing snow and at no time did I lock up the auger or the auger came in contact with anything. When I finished, everything was working normally. I cleaned up the machine and put it away. Several hours later, when I started it up, the "auger lock indicator" light was flashing, immediately upon starting, before even touching snow. When this happens, the machine shuts down as soon as the auger is engaged and it will not reset. No matter how long it's left in the off position. Had to bring it to the dealer to have it taken apart and reset. Not a fun experience.

    The Auger Gearbox has an internal over torque spring loaded slipper clutch with a collar that also trips an activation switch that kills the engine when it activates , (that click click click sound is the clutch releasing the auger shaft from the main drive otherwise a jam would outright break the gears in the gear box or the weakest link in the system) .. it kind of works like the torque limiting clutch on power screw driver. example ignore the rest ,,ua-cam.com/video/QJtfFIlsKuY/v-deo.html ,, ( as its simply impossible due to to the rotational inertia of the engine as well as impellers high rotational inertia to stop the auger drive fast enough it would break the gearbox so there has to be a way for the system to react to jam overtorque and slip when this happens. The second you hear it start to do this, release the auger drive clutch lever. it will still trip and kill the engine but this will save wear and tear on the auger transmission's torque release clutch .. I think toro also uses an over torque auger jam protection system in there auger gear box that also works this way on "some" of there machines but this system lacks the trip switch mechanism to kill the engine. I have not confirmed this . An exploded parts Diagram of the Auger Gear box itself makes this easy to see www.hondapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/hpe/55bfa17b87a8661afc0babc6/auger-transmission-2

    I ended up going with a Toro HD828 and what actually sold me was the fact that they do not use shear bolts as shown there: ua-cam.com/video/2sIYSRhkbwE/v-deo.html
    The engine just stops until you clear it and restart it. Doesnt have any indicator like Honda's, which would be nice, but Toro being a tier class below Honda, it's pretty good for the price.
    Also, I never wouldve had the stones to do what you did lol. Nice video! :)

    Toro doesn’t have any sheer pins and the engine will shut off before any damage occurs.

    After your first run over 2 sticks and pizza boxes, the auger started making a different noise for sure. Sounds like some damage was done for sure. Take it back. Get one with shear pins.
