Basho himself was orphaned as an infant. This song expresses a longing to be reunited with his parents. The liner notes dedicate the song as follows: “To all the little orphans of the rainbow; and may they find the gentle hand of the Creator.”
Lyrics Born for love and nothing more Given away 'cause we was poor Will you wait, will you wait for me? My hair was black and my eyes was bright Never gave pleasure to my parent's sight Will you wait, will you wait for me? I'll be waiting by the river my love I'll be waiting by the trees Will you wait, will you wait for me? My face was brown and my hair was long Cut my hair, hushed my song Will you wait, will you wait for me? All my life I've been forced to roam Never had a place to call my own Will you wait, will you wait for me?
Born for love, and nothing more, Given away because we was poor, Will you wait, will you wait for me? My hair was black, and my eyes was bright, Never catch up to my parents side, will you wait, will you wait for me? I'll be waiting there by the river, my love. I'll be waiting there by the trees. Will you wait? My face was brown, and my hair was long. Cut my hair, and hushed my song. Will you wait, will you wait for me? All my life I've been forced to roam, Never had a place to call my own. Will you wait, will you wait for me? I'll be waiting there by the river, my love. I'll be waiting there by the trees. Will you wait? Will you wait?
@@withoutcrux it's actually "never gave pleasure to my parent's sight" which on the surface seems less fitting but is actually much more heartfelt and tragic

I first heard this way back in the 1970s (thank you for the correction) when I hitchhiked around the U.S. mostly out west and lived almost exclusively in the American wilderness eating wild edible plants and early on fish I would catch with a rod I carried with me, a tube tent and a good backpack. I was like a gypsy with Guatemalan clothes and feathers in my hair, a colorful bandana on my head and I wore crystal jewelry I made myself from rockhound finds (my Shawnee and choctaw blood) It has a special meaning to me for the two rare times baby does slept next to me but just distant on cold nights in the forest I even petted one, who cuddled up to me to stay warm. I think they themselves may have been orphans.
ROBBIE BASHO, must be the one in Berkeley in the sixties, with his full 12 string throbing and beating chords ! wonderful must be him now again..Paul arnoldi
Paul Arnoldi Did you have any conversation with him? How did he look/act like? I’ve returned here many a time, as it’s one of the few sources of this song. Thanks for the upload. A true secret gem in the pop canon that it is hard to tire of.
Just discovered this song, this fabulous artist, from another one, which have nothing in common, Huun Huur Tu, who had a song also named "Orphan's lament". This is so great to discover from one point to another and discover such majectic piece of music. I do know Robbie Dasho now, and it's a real pleasure to my ears. (just found it on bandcamp!! ... nice!)
is it just by chance that 'Orphan's Lament' is also the name of one of Huun-Huur-tu's albums? i found them recently and Mother Tiger by them is the only thing i've ever heard that makes me feel the way Rocky Mountain Raga does

Never (making an “ay” sound as in gave, not a “eh” sound as in can) ...(making a “zh” sound as in pleasure, not a “ch” sound as in catch)...(the “ur” sound in pleasure is debatable because it could sound like up, though I’m pretty sure he pronounces the R pretty clearly) to my parents (sight or side? Idk). Being an orphan given away he must not have given pleasure to his parents sight. Not enough to keep him. Maybe at no fault of his own. Maybe it was there own shame or remorse for knowing they couldn’t take care of him that brought them displeasure when they saw him. Regardless...I’m certain those are the lyrics.
im scared of listening to this song cus it makes me cry
Knowing he was an orphan makes this song hit so much harder. Poor beautiful soul just wanted a mom and dad.
This is what modern opera should sound like
This is clearly a man who was very in touch with his pain and turned it into something beautiful. RIP Robbie Basho

Oh my God what a gorgeous and sweet melancholy sentiment, makes my eyes all a-watery
Thats so precious, so beautiful
actually his sister not his parents
broke into tears reading that. so fragile...
This is literally one of the most genuine, truly gorgeous songs ever written. Robbie Basho was unparalleled.
Yeah, it scares me for how beautiful it is

I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard
I know a man accompanied with nothing but a piano can do a lot, but Basho goes into legendary proportions of "a lot" with this one.
Alot a Hell of a lot!
@@zatoichimasseur6767 I think there's also a hammered dulcimer playing along with the piano :)
@@seBcopTer It's only a piano. Basho was that good.
I’d say the reverb is doing a lot of the heavy lifting creating a string tone with the lower keys, it’s a genius way of filling the empty noise
@@cysilversoul Listening to this again, I think Basho was using a Tack Piano to create that unique sound.
I had this on vinyl many years ago, remember a few cold morning when I'd put it on first thing to fire my soul for the day. No one like Basho.
Truly, one of the deeply saddest songs i've ever heard... very moving, this along with blue crystal fire are his best songs
Robbie Basho was capable of incredible cascades of beauty, triumph, sadness. RIP big man

The depth of emotions is just overwhelming here

His best album and maybe his best song. Just as stunning on piano as he is on guitar. And that voice is nigh impossible to match.

Tuscan throat singing is very emotive, in touch with nature.
