- This video will show you a little trick on how to get from Melbourne Airport to the CBD without purchasing a SkyBus Ticket. This video is useful if you are a backpacker, a student traveller or just looking to travel cheaply through Australia which is becoming increasingly harder. In this video I will show you a step by step guide to getting to the cbd by taking the 901 bus to Broadmeadows then taking the Cragieburn line into the CBD.

Thanks heap!!! such a useful video ^^
As a Melbournian, I have used the 901 bus many times. But do not forget to buy a MYKI public transport card at the airport. Just ask someone who looks official for directions. Unfortunately it is $6 for the card plus add $10 to the card for your bus/train fare. This bus route provides a great tour of metropolitan Melbourne, visiting all main shopping centres and train stations that centre out from the city.
This service is rarely used by the general public to get to the airport and I have never experienced it being jam packed full.
For a real adventure, take the 4 hour trip to Frankston, then train to the city. Great trip for people watching!
not broady station 💀
4hours?
A good way to save money but probably the ugliest introduction to Melbourne possible
no doubt
as a resident of melbourne i would try to avoid broadmeadows at night as it is a dangerous area
as a melbourne resident i find is disgusting that they try and push the skybus when they don't even have a train option. For under $5 and only an hour that is a great price
No it's not compared to the bad areas in almost any major city in Europe or America, the most "intimidating" suburbs in Melbourne are downright pedestrian in comparison.
legit
LMAO hi nick did not expect to see you here
Most Melbourne train stations are safe havens compared to overseas destinations. Yes melb has few shady people but overall it’s pretty safe
IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember to get a Myki card, you can search for places to buy cards using the PTV app
Tip, I heard the airport have myki cards at T2, T3 and T4. But if you have an android, you can use mobile myki. But in the future this will be fixed if you plan to visit melbourne next year. Also all these machines are full fare cards so if you have a concession eligibity, you have to go a staffed area
The reason why the PTV app insists on using the skybus is because it is almost two times faster than this method - the skybus takes about 45 minutes wait time included and this method would take about an hour and a quarter.
I'm going to be a bit more cynical and wonder if another reason are the rights associated with the Skybys airport bus contract?
Buddy you are a Legend, I will share this info to everybody.
After being nickled and dimed by the airlines for checked baggage, inflight food and seat allocation, saving some money once you hit planet earth again is a nice feeling.
Especially as I'd still have to use my Myki Card to get home once I reach Southern Cross.
Thank you so much for the tip-off!
Update - this now costs $5.30 if you need to buy a myuki for this :)
I'm not advising fare dodging at this point but I wouldn't blame anyone if they did ;)
I'm going to do this just in principle. Skybus is a rort. Prices just keep going up.
LEGEND!
You’re such a legend mate! Thanks for this!
Sorry but I would choose the skybus every time over that!
It’s a world away from Adelaide where one can get into the city for a public transport price.
Or get the 901 to Blackburn Station 🚉 it’s further in the eastern suburbs but you’ll most likely be safer to go there than Broadmeadows station 🤷🏻♀️
Epping Station is another station that Route 901 passes on the way to Frankston that isn't as far to travel as Blackburn. It passes Greensborough Station too.
@@darrenmiles-morland8038 Oh Thanks Mate , I forgot about that. You’re right. I guess depending on where you need to go and say you have family around certain areas then it’ll be better for you to go further down the line so you don’t have to worry about figuring out what train line you need to go on. But to avoid that gap of no airport rail, then yes Epping would be better. 👍🏻 😊
😮😮😮 theyvtry to make it so hard! That bus is hidden!
I usually do this anyway unless I’m in a hurry
can you do one for brisbane and sydney
i wouldnt do that with my luggage i would never go through broady and westmeadows they messed up suburbs
Can you explain why?
You didn't mention. You need a card to take the public transport. Maybe the driver was good with me, he told me I need to buy this card in the train station, so I took the bus for free.
Ah sorry I should have made this more clear, the bus drivers in Melbourne are pretty lenient tho so you probably don't need to get a card until you get to the station especially compared to those in Sydney. I will add a disclaimer comment now
@@mynameciaran Its not that we are lenient. Its that we are told not to do anything if a passenger cant touch on. As we do not have the power to refuse a passenger on the bus, Unless it becomes a safety concern. As drivers do not check Myki cards, this is the job for the ticket inspectors. Hopefully that gives abit more insight. And Yes, i am a PTV Driver.
@@stryderz4839 Damn thats an interesting insight I would say thats the right call from seeing the abuse drivers can get from refusing passengers in Hobart
@@stryderz4839 Thank you for the insight!
@@mynameciaran Drivers here in Tas can't really refuse a passenger either, especially if their under 18yo. They can either accept it, ask them to get off the bus or call police. I'm on the NW and this can directly from Transport Tas
I don’t like sky bus in peak hours. You might as well drive a car. Drives me nuts. So this is a really good option.
Peak hours due to traffic or crowded buses?
This is brilliant. I'm just checking it out now and I can't believe how close to the airport it is. I've previously looked and discovered the Airport tram route number 59 but that's a taxi ride away and as I'm not planning to travel anytime soon I hadn't fully looked into prices.
Bus route 478 runs between the Airport West Tram terminus and Melbourne Airport T4 Bus terminus.
Great if you want to waste an hour, being tired after flying I always prefer the 20min sky is... Who wants to waste time on the bogan express.
thx so much, really helpful and straight to the point😊
Take a longer time and can't carry many luggage but thanks a lot
Thank you so much. I have question from where you get the ticket
Thanks! I am going there next year so I will check it out.
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you
Hey, I will be landing on T2 terminal, I want to go to Frankston, if i continue this 901 bus, how much would it cost me?
The cost of a Zone 1 and 2 Myki fare. I assume that this would be the same price as travelling from Melbourne Airport to the city.
isn’t there a tram stop near the airport?
thanks mate!
Tried to do this just this week but I could not find any myki ticket machine in the vicinity. With no way to purchase a ticket (Android only) I ran out of choices. I've heard there are machines in the terminal but I did not see any.
ah sorry to hear, if you got android you could download the app. If not just explain to the bus driver they're usually pretty understanding.
If we carry hand carry and 20 kg suitcase, is it possible
If not many suitcase its very cheap deal
There are luggage racks in the busses, I've travelled on this bus with lots of luggage in the past and it worked out fine
How can we go to the airport using bus 901?
Go to Broadmeadows station and transfer onto route 901 from there.
I use that when I have to go to the airport during the daytime. The airport stop is a long way from the terminals. Weekend and evening services are not as frequent and sometimes nonexistent. By using the train you can have convenient connections to other metro areas.
Do I have to pay for the ticket at the southern cross station and how much is the ticket? Is it daily payment?
Myki cards? As a visitor who wants to pay $10 for that plus the fare..do the math...
they're mostly likely gonna buy it anyway...do the math and also this video can also be used by people that live in melbourne or regularly go to melbourne
If you have an Android phone with Google Wallet, you can put a Myki on it for no cost beyond loading money or a travel pass on to it. The money option is charged at minimum increment of $10 (i.e. it will auto reload $10 from your credit/debit card when you go into a negative account balance).
As a visitor, you might use public transport anyway so why not buy a card?
and you can use the card to recharge and use public transport during your stay. Good grief we keep ours for our next visit. Saves money
Hey thank u for the information, where can I buy the bus card?
I went to 7/11 to get the bus card
@@mynameciaran and for the train? Do i need to get a card too?
@@bud384 same card for train/bus/tram
There also is a machine at the bus interchange at the airport you can find its location on the PTV app
Take the skybus. If you can't afford $20, you won't survive a day in Melbourne. And how much was your airfare? And how much is your accommodation? And how much do you think a beer for you and your mate costs? Don't be a scab, front up with your twenty bucks. You'll probably want to travel by public transport during your stay. A myki card will cost you $6. Good luck finding a place other than a large train station to buy one. Then you top it up as you need. If you haven't upgraded to iPhone and you're still using an android, you can download an app that will save you the $6. Always tap off on trains and busses, never tap off on trams. Happy Holidays!
OMG flights to Melbourne, accommodation and food is heaps cheaper than where we live, so is public transport. I'm over Skybus and being pushed into an overfull bus. And $20? More like around $40 return per adult for 45mins of misery?!
Yes, Google maps never shows you the cheap way
probably sky bus operators and ptv suppressed this information by warning google not to promote it. Google hides reviews of businesses too....lot of shady businesses threaten (or pay) google to take the bad reviews
it shows me the bus and train route on my maps, but even if we had price displays on maps like on some other countries they don't have a sorting option that allows you to sort by cost, they're prioritising the fastest routes. Depending on which part of the airport you're in, the search results will either favour the skybus terminal based on proximity, or the nearby state owned one
And it's not craigieburn, it's the one says flinder street. Apparently it's not platform 1, otherwise on the same platform pass the train to both directions
The line is called the Craigieburn line but yes you take the one that says Flinders Street which generally goes from platform 1 but always good to check anyway in case it's switched
@@mynameciaran platform 1 was going to craigieburn! I waste one hour going in the other direction
@@giorgiodiz8069 platform 1 goes to the city, it is not 1hr to Craigieburn anyway
@@74_pelicans Do you know which station it'll end at the city? I'm going to Flinders and try to find the way where it stops. Thank you!
@@melina___anggraini if its says City Loop it'll go to the All CBD stops
