When the day’s shoot for Dracula was complete, a Spanish crew came in and used all the same sets to shoot the Spanish version of the film. The Spanish film’s director had a much surer grasp of dramatic camera angles and visual story-telling. It’s an interesting comparison of two directors’ different visions of the same story. Good stuff!
@@midlevelmedia Tod Browning (“Freaks”) used static, locked down camera shots, where the director of the Spanish version used sweeping camera moves, crane shots and practical fog effects for a quite different interpretation of the source material.
Watch Browning's film carefully -- the camera moves fluidly, it just doesn't call attention to itself. The Spanish version drags and Carlos Villarías is laughably inept as Dracula. Those outakes of Lugosi and his three vampire wives inserted in the Spanish version are glaringly obvious.

Great unboxing ! I ended up grabbing the SteelBooks instead, hopefully they will continue the series so we will get all the classic monsters ! Big Thumbs Up ! 👍😁👍
Ken, I wasn't gonna buy it on 4k because I thought the Dracula's Spanish version was only a bonus on the Bluray edition until you show the back of the box to find it is included. Again, thank you.
After watching all four I have to say for me Invisible Man looks the most dramatic as far as upgrades vs the others included. Couldn’t really tell much of a difference with Dracula vs the Blu-ray but maybe its my 4k tv (Sony xbr930C).
I always love watching universal horror documentary usually in the Frankenstein bonus features, but could not find it confirmed anywhere if it would be in this set. With your awesome unboxing I could see it was there! Now I must buy, thank you for this!

My PRE-ORDER has not shipped yet. My local Walmart does not have. Best Buy does but traffic there is a nightmare and doubly so lately since they tore up a bunch of roads, but you never see anybody working on them. I refuse to enter that area unless I absolutely have to.
Oh man I thought you were going to do this video in black and white to fit with the theme of classic b&w horror I lowkey got excited, that would’ve been cool.
This looks like a nice set! I have the big 30 film collection on bluray, so I won't be getting this one. They are classic films that deserve to been seen though!
@@midlevelmedia Dang it!! I was hoping for new transfers on the Blu-rays because all 4k UHD discs look way too dark IMO (on my tv, it looks like someone cut the brightness in half!). I guess I don't feel too bad about it cause I just snagged the Universal classic monsters 30 film Blu-ray boxset yesterday on Amazon for $70! That's less than $2.50 a film! Even the essentials collection with just Dracula (and the Spanish version), the Mummy, Wolf Man, Creature, Phantom (1943), Frankenstein and Bride was $57!
Hi @MidLevelMedia! ive seen blu ray releases of boxsets of the monsters, so one set for Dracula films, one for Frankenstein etc. Is there any chance that all of them will be released as the same boxsets per monster, but as 4k versions instead? ie 4k boxset of all the Dracula films etc?
I have got UK version of this box set which includes just four 4K disc. I have steel book editions for Dracula and Frankenstein which includes 4K and Blu-ray. I already have several versions of earlier Universal horror Blu-rays. I wished that the set included bride of Frankenstein and the mummy. US packaging and set looks better.
Excellent review! Love the spooky touch of turning your logo to B&W. Can't wait to get my copy. Best Buy was all sold out or they didn't actually get the product in. No steelbooks or 4K sets at all.
Does the wolf man come with freankknsten meets the wolf man cus I just watched Frankenstein and the Wolfman and creature from Black Lagoon and Frankenstein on DVD I got from the library and they had additional movies on the DVD like wolf man meets Frankenstein etc I loved them so I went ahead and ordered the sets your reviewing in this video I haven’t seen Dracula phantom of the opera and the mummy yet or the invisible man
Not seen these movies but Im deffo going to purchase this 4k box set as its going to be the best they will ever look, £60 UK is a bit steep but its 4 films so , swings n roundabouts I guess. Hope the PQ is great too.
@@midlevelmedia the bluray in my opinion looks great. I just think they should have added the other four. I would even upgrade it if that was the case.
These transfers look too dark -- the Blu-rays have comparatively more clarity. This is especially evident in night scenes. HDR processing inherently darkens everything.
I wouldn't mind paying that price if it at least included The Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon as well. As is though, I'm having a hard time justifying it, especially in the digibook style of packaging. For that price, it should have been regular cases for each movie.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yea, for some reason they always use that style here in the US, but in the UK they use the trays which I prefer. I picked up the UK blu-ray box set and was way nicer than US version.
I actually think trays are worse because every time I've had a digipack with trays, either the tray doesn't keep the disc locked on or it's cracked. Regular cases can be replaced.
This box set missing to two best universal monster movies. Creature and the mummy why wouldn't they include them? If it's a cost thing skip giving me the bluray versions
I would bet you a volume 2 is coming with The Mummy, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Phantom of the Opera. Those will make for some nice upgrades. Not sure why they didn't just go for it with all 8 films to begin with, maybe to keep costs down.
@@midlevelmedia I really hope so. Bride of Frankenstein is such a good movie by any standard. Personally, I really love The Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Son of Frankenstein as well. Bought the Blu Ray of the Universal Monsters 30 film collection and bunch more before that. Won’t even consider getting this.
