Best version of the first aria I've ever heard. Mr. Klaus Mertens is at such a next level; the words are clear, the notes are crisp yet it feels so natural like a poetry. Even at more than 70 years old! This will always be my favorite - one of the finest moments in musical performances.
Opening Chorus takes us to as close n approximation of the heavenly realm as this temporal realm permits . So impressed by the balance and sensitivity to nuance .
I know, I know, about 120th time listening to the Bernard and Terry Wey duet, I find myself falling in love with Plemena's playing. I wish I could be like that on my guitar.
I've been waiting for years for the Bachstiftung to post a performance of this greatest of all Lutheran hymns. It was worth the wait! I could listen to the opening movement a hundred times and never fail to marvel at its beauty and power. Thank you!
OkayI found the sheet music, the translation and it's going to take many listenings to absorb this one, magnificent, but right now i want a contra bassoon for Christmas.
Here is the sheet music, which for some reason has never been published in full on this site since its inception... ua-cam.com/video/ivcoE7jjSYM/v-deo.html
Bach didn't have a contrabassoon in Weimar or Leipzig, but he did have a full-sized organ, not the little _Truhenorgel_ ("chest organ") used in this performance, tuned to around a=465 (which is a 1/2 tone above a=440 and a whole tone above a=415). In this performance, they're using a baroque contrabassoon to compensate for the lack of a full-sized organ tuned to either a=415 or a=465. Presumably, they can't use the organ in this church because it's tuned to a=440. Baroque oboes and bassoons are designed to be tuned to a=415 (1/2 step below a=440) or a=392 (whole tone below a=440). For compatibility with the tuning requirements of baroque wind instruments, they'd have to transpose the organ part down a 1/2 step to play it on an organ tuned to a=440.
Wow what a memorable performance by all. I even enjoyed the larger choir. Particularly wonderful is the inclusion of the Baroque Double Bassoon which even on my tiny laptop speakers really enhanced the Stringed Bass. It came through really well. Congratulations too to the Oboe da Caccia player for his obbligato - Suberb. Yes another fantastic UA-cam recording from Trogen which I will return to many times in the future.
Too bad the contrabassoonist can't hold his breath long enough to play without a break the whole note that's tied across 6-1/2 measures. The part he's playing was meant to be played on an organ, not a contrabassoon.
Special kudos to the bass soloist who handled those challenging and endless runs with such effortless precision! That is one tough part to pull off so well! (Just checked the name -- Klaus Mertens! Of COURSE he did this so well!)
I came for the *taille* in the second chorus, but found the part played on an *oboe da caccia* -- a legitimate substitute. The contrabassoon is a great surprise! 😃 Fine singing and playing all through.
Too bad he can't hold his breath long enough to play without a break the whole note that's tied across 6-1/2 measures. The part he's playing was meant to be played on an organ, not a contrabassoon.
I read in the comments that Bach did not write that part for the contra bassoon, but I believe that if he knew that gentleman, he would have he would have used him a lot more. Tremendous large and warm tone. Just think of what Bach could have done with a Segovia if he had one.
Lovely as usual but a little fast....wow that double bassoon is BIG.....all this trouble for a few notes in the beginning chorus and the final choral!!! Mille mercis du Canada.
This ensemble is using a contrabassoon to compensate for the lack of a full-sized organ tuned to the proper pitch (a=415 or a=465). Bach had no contrabassoon and didn't need one because the venues where his cantatas were performed had full-sized church organs. The only organ this ensemble has is the little _Truhenorgel_ ("chest organ"), which lacks the muscle of a full-sized organ. The church organ in this venue is tuned to a=440, which is incompatible with the tuning of baroque wind instruments.
@@mariod7473 Don't worry about those that try to fly their academics over people. They miss the point and the heart of the performance most of the time.
@@larrydean4433 Ah, the triumph of ignorance. But you missed the point, which is that "all this trouble for a few notes" is to compensate for lack of a full-sized organ tuned to a pitch that's compatible with the tuning requirements of the winds instruments. FYI, a full organ already has the equivalent of a contrabassoon built in (16' bassoon stop).
@@herrickinman9303 Of course the double bassoon was added to pick up the bass, it was still a great touch. It did not seem like it was any trouble for the musician. A wise addition. Arrogance, you proud of that? I play Bach on a classical guitar with modern tuning, oh the blasphemy of it all.
Thanks for posting. You guys are making such beautiful music. If I may, though, these breakneck speeds won't do. The first choral, for example, is a facsimile of battle. It's armies marching, battalions lining up, advancing and retreating strategically. It's the clear-eyed witness of the determination and the terror felt when you are engaged with an enemy that could overcome you at any moment. This vision which the music is meant to convey is muddied away in this rush. Bach is sternly ministering to his flock about how we must be unified and ready and wide-awake in the fight against perdition. All this cannot be conveyed by a whirlwind! You really have to slow down and trust the music more. Really, I think we need to see Bach's coloring as more descriptive than imitative and we must learn to perform it so.
Never heard of Blitzkrieg? All jokes aside, I like this tempo. In fact I relish diversity in the interpretation of Bach's works. If everybody agreed on the same tempo and expression, and played accordingly, the world would become a sorry place. And Bach's genius manifests itself in the fact that there are so many ways to make his wonderful creations 'work'. And I find Herr Lutz's musical choices always inspiring.

Great to hear Klaus Mertens still has such chops even as he’s aged. What a legend
Brillante Interpretation! Erhöhung der Seele: spirituelles Glück in seiner reinsten Form!😇🙏🎆✨
Dorothy Mields has a voice that can make angels cry with joy.

Wonderful the holy music of our Master Bach, Hallelujah!!?
This is probably my favourite Bach cantata, all is perfect in this performance! Great orchestra, choir and amazing singers!!
The story of my life in some ways is this cantata

Extraordinary! My dad always asks me to play this during our meal time. He says Bach's music brings him back to life.
Simply magnificent.

Extraordinary performance, especially that of mr. Mertens. Thanks a lot.
That orchestral introduction in the mid choral is absolutely thrilling
what an undeserved privilege to witness this - thank be to God🙌
Bravo from the USA, and God Bless.

Bass bassoon ! Never seen or heard before ! Fantastic sound.
Wonderful performance, and the special instruments are intriguing! Thank you!

What a beautiful Bach Cantata Concert world class rendition of this work! Danke Veelmals
Fantastico, grazie! Buona domenica!
The bass sounds incredibly a-ma-azing!!!!!
Súper mega bass sound!
Fun fact about this cantata: it’s the greatest!
Profundamente gozoso. Mil gracias.
Ária final magnífica. Nós viajamos ouvindo esta música maravilhosa.🤩🤩🤩
the *second* movement is one of my favorites in all the cantatas. Non-imitative counterpoint at its best!
Thank you, another jewel from Bach’s cantata treasury. Deeply satisfying to listen to.
The addition of the contrabassoon really was an excellent inspiration!
Wonderful as always, thanks a lot for these recordings!
The opening choir is one mighty fortress of sound.
I like it ^^ ;)

Amazing musicianship, congrats to our deal colleagues!
......well done!
El bajo grandisimo.
Vielen Dank! Wunderbar.
Ms Mields & Mr Mertens were born to sing BWV 80. No better pairing exists.
Gracias!
The voice of God.

Thank you very much again for another wonderful concert!

I wish that Bach would have scored a quartet of trombones and a slide trumpet. However, a contrabassoon is a treat in and of itself!
As a chorus member, it's nice to see the orchestra standing up for a change. :)
This is J.S.Bach.....summa Humanitas. Deo Soli Gloria .
I know it is not nice to pick favorites, but oh my, this is stunning from the first note to the last note.
Thanks for this wonderful video & music. Truly beautiful singing.
Thank you !
Una grande bendicion, muchas gracias!

Dope dominant sharp 9 chord at 10:54. I never realized JS Bach was such a mad lad.
Incredible!
Excellent!

I especially like the oboe piece in the aria(20:40)and I even bought the score🎵😊🇯🇵
