The design of Modern Sonic has been the same since Sonic Adventure 1. The only difference is that with each game Sonic's model got higher quality. If you look at the actual art design of Sonic Adventure/Sonic X, Sonic literally has his modern design there.
It is my favorite design of Sonic because it combines classic and modern visuals as well. He also reminds me of early 3D Models from the 80s which is an indie style for me.
SA1 Dreamcast Sonic is in my favorite 3d model for sonic, i mean, details like the textures on his hair, his expressions on cutscenes and also has that 3d retro vibe that is very good, especially if you put it on modern games, like when in super mario oddysey you have the sm64 mario model, the contrast of a polygonal and old model on a more realistic enviroment it's something very cool for me, that's why i like the mods where they put sa1 dreamcast sonic model on modern sonic games

The games would be so much better if they did. Sonic actually has canine teeth, like a hedgehog should. Also the facial expressions in SA 1 for DreamCast had more energy and humour to it
