There were several masters of animation during Hollywood’s golden era. Of the top two geniuses, one created elaborate fairy tales and ornate feature-length fantasias - the other guy was Tex Avery. He just wanted to make you laugh. Having already been integrally involved in the development of Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros., Avery moved to MGM in 1941 to create a set of comedy masterpieces that defined a new slapstick style for animation, inspiring cartoonists, comedians and filmmakers for decades to come. Avery’s unit at Metro Goldwyn Mayer was all about breaking the fourth wall, shattering expectations and making audiences fall down with laughter. His one-shot masterpieces, including Bad Luck Blackie, Red Hot Riding Hood and Symphony in Slang, have proven themselves pure gold. And continuing characters like Droopy, Screwball Squirrel and George & Junior - not to mention Spike, Red and The Wolf - remain unforgettable comic personas among the top rank of cartoondom. Avery’s cartoons were ahead of their time - and their time has come. Finally committed to Blu-ray™, this first collection of restored Technicolor® shorts feels fresh and new, and is funnier than ever. This set will delight young and old - and will amaze a new generation ready to laugh again. - JERRY BECK, Animation Historian.
Directed By Tex Avery
Starring John Brown

I love the fact that they interpret the slang literally!
That's the joke, Mr. Webster gets literal with it.
Mr. Webster is like an autistic person. Most autistics take things too literally.
@@melissacooper4282 Many of these things aren't even slang. The word "it" is a substitute for anything that was most recently mentioned to not get redundant. And whenever the word "like" or "seemed" are used, they are key words. It'll be like finding a needle in a haystack is more accurate than saying you are looking for a needle in a haystack.
@@melissacooper4282 As an autistic person myself, I can understand that.
@@snotloutisagod2956 I usually don't use slang much, but I find it highly interesting to examine it as an autistic person.
When I was a kid, this cartoon used to scared me because of how insane and confusing it was. 😰
Now as a grown up, it’s my favorite Tex Avery cartoon! 🤣
I loved this cartoon as a kid. The 1951 'Symphony in Slang' was a pure classic! And I would laugh so hard because I knew even back when I was 7 years old the difference between slang and literal.
Polymaths laugh mirthfully at the absurdity of taking the slang literally. But I suspect some damaged souls end up psychopaths since they painfully interpret the slang literally and start doing some weird stuff, much like The Joker!
Saint Benedict, pray for us. ♥
I always thought it was absolutely hilarious. Then again anything Tex Avery made was usually pretty good. And there is a cluster of cartoons that he made in his prime which personally I consider the greatest cartoons ever made.
I remember seeing this when I was a little kid. Good times.
Right on!
I remember this cartoon, loved it.
Me too
Classic
Is it true that the Disney Channel series Phineas and Ferb had a little Tex Avery design to the characters and backgrounds?
Imagine if one of them ordered a Bloody Mary.
Or a Black Russian. (Okay, that one's from "The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear".)
🤣😂
Drixenol86 *gets out whole ass mirror* I’ll fetch her- I mean one right up
Imagine if they released *all* the MGM shorts instead of just the Tex Avery ones
@@GeneralGeorgeS.PattonJr. You can probably find it on Dailymotion.
" I was up against IT. … But I carried ON." Where is the rest?
Chris Vellner what’s it mean?
We want to find out what happened to Mary. Did she have a bunch of little 1s.😂🤣
Valerieann Rumpf oh okay
Whassah mattuh? Cat got your tongue?
@@emiliopolanco8587 the cartoon is cut , the end is missing
I love how literal this cartoon is lol 😆
This is the most literal story I ever heard! 🤣
Me too.
That’s the joke.
@veronicaa.1416I use it to teach about idioms!
I want ALL of Tex Avery on DVD!!!
ME TOO!!!
@@alvinjones670 I only have 1 of the 4 volumes on VHS tape & I want them ALL
yeah its available thru Warner Archive NOW
Tex Avery's LAST cartoon is called Sh-h-h-h released by Walter Lantz Productions from Universal Pictures
Your in luck the Tex Avery Archive Collection is out on DVD volume 1 and 2 on Amazon. Uncut for collectors and not suitable for children.
@@hamhockbeans I have both now hehe

As they forgot 1 Screwy Squirrel episode hehe
One of the Greatest and Most Original Cartoons of All Time.....
This cartoon takes everything literally
A that's the joke in this show🤣
Finally! One of my all-time favorite cartoons in HD!
This was on TCM recently, and I actually showed it to my mother. She was in stitches! To this day, I remember parts of it like it was only yesterday when I was sitting on the floor of the living room as a little kid. Especially the cat with the tongue!
me too, except it was the bit about him being beside himself. it wasn't until recently i was able to find this cartoon. for a decade i was searching "man beside himself in cartoon" or "cartoon figures of speech literal," stuff like that, but it would never return anything useful. some years ago, i had the tv on for background noise, and when i heard the line, "i was beside myself with anger," i said, "that's the cartoon!" luckily i was able to go back on the tivo or whatever it was -- the thing that lets you pause live television -- to the opening credits, and that was how i learned it was a tex avery cartoon.
Tex Avery was a genius!! Every time I look up one of my favorite childhood cartoons, his name appears! I always remembered Mary letting her hair down and eating like a horse! 😂.
That's why he was given the title king of cartoons
Give some credit to Rich Hogan for the writing of the short
Loved this cartoon! So unique at showing examples of phrases we use everyday! Lol 😂
Ran into this cartoon when i was in high school 1981 an it's STILL my favorite in 2020!
The voice actor in this is John Brown, who played Jim Gillis and Digby O'Dell on the radio sitcom "The Life of Riley."
Bravo! I didn't realize until I heard Digger talk, and thought, wow, he was Noah Webster too! He did all the voices on this most Tex Avery-ish of Tex Avery cartoons.
@@markloveless1001 Yup! I didn't catch on until I saw this on T.V. recently, and when I heard Webster say, "Proceed," I knew it was Digger! Then I realized that the voice he used for the hipster was the same he used as Al in "My Friend Irma."
Just like the Tom and Jerry Golden Collection remastered but in 4K scans.
I’ve been looking everywhere for this for years.. This was one of my favorites as a kid.
Seeing this cartoon remastered this nicely is something I didn't no I needed until now.
It would've been better if they didn't cut the ending off. Some remastering.
I know they are the 2nd hand prints, but I’m so glad they finally released this set!
About time they honored him too!
I saw this when I was a kid and it stuck with me all these years. Occasionally, I’ve looked for it, but had no idea what to search for. Today I found it! I’m so happy :0)
One of my absolute favorites.
This is pure gold straight from my childhood. I feel bad for the kids today that don’t have these gems in their lives.
I was just thinking about this one the other day. I loved it as a kid, and was wondering how much of it my kids would get if they watched it.
Best gag ever: The "wolf" swallows Droopy's TV. In the next scene, Droopy is watching TV again, and says, "Now don't ask us how we got the television set back!"
I had to Google up some of the terms but otherwise I was understanding what he was saying.
Its HILARIOUS
One of my absolute favorite Tex Avery cartoons.
This looks amazing! I need this set!
I want the full version 😭
Why show half a cartoon I agree
This is my favorite cartoon of all time. I watched Tom & Jerry all the time and I would get so excited when this came on!
When I was a kid, I saw the French version many time and, surprinsingly, they adapted the jokes really well
I haven’t thought about this episode since i saw it as a kid in the 80s. I’m a kid again. Thanks 🙏🏻
I have been searching for this one forever. All i could remember was "so i carried on"😂
I remember being a child in the 70s watching this cartoon and laughing my head off (😉).
Ditto!
Laughing your head off? There's another idiom for ol' Tex to depict!
@@MrTruckerf Exactly. LOL
Love Tex Avory's humor, got my wife into his cartoons now👍
I remember when they had this episode on tv. It was great! Don’t let the flame die out
These are the best cartoons in all time! All kids should be watching these cartoons. The cartoons from today are not good
Yeah except for the fact that several cartoons from this time (not including this one) didn't age well
This was my first time ever seeing this cartoon. I literally almost died laughing!
This and the “Of Tomorrow” series are my favorite Tex Avery shorts
This is one of my favorite shorts, how nostalgic
I love that cartoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every minute!!!!!!!!!
Moscow Mule! I didn’t know that was an old drink!
This was funny as hell as a kid and still is..these cartoons never get old old..or I never tire of them.I haven't seen this in years and it's still funny
Omg 😂 yes this was one of my absolute favorites as a kid.
That is one of my favorite Tex Avery episode! 😂
As for someone on the spectrum who likes to put phrases and slang literally, I found this hilarious
I love these cartoons, and they look amazing in high definition!
It looks like modern and new!
I've been after this for forty years.it must have been 1980 since I last saw it.unbelievable.thanks
This is my second most favorite cartoon behind hillbilly hare.
My favorite Tex Avery Cartoon of them all too hilarious!😆😆😂😂🤣🤣🤣
This is one of my favorites.
A pure classic and MGM comedy cartoon madness LOL. I remember it well. Me and my friends watch this cartoon and always discussed it laughing hysterically not knowing that there was a interesting radio and movie history of this one character. Years later I would find out by sheer chance listening to old time radio and listening to an episode with alan reed AKA the voice of Fred Flintstone. Hearing him talk laughing thinking this is cool. And then a very familiar voice started talking and it was that person that played in that cartoon the character that is The voice. Did my research with with this and found out he was frequently on the Damon Runyon theater show as a character called Broadway. And if you listen to it and literally think like when the couch which character was in the heavens and Webster literally translated in his mind. They were literally making fun of the Damon Runyon show and that one cartoon because if you think about everything we talked about in all those episodes it definitely is funnier than it sounds in a way ridiculous LOL.
i looked for this cartoon for a long time , i didnt knew its name and i just found it , ive seen it four times already and shared it .I love it!
I remember this! Wow I haven't seen this since the 70's...too bad the rest isn't there
Imagine the slang nowadays. “I put on my kicks, and hit the road.” 😂
THIS.... IS A CLASSIC!!!! Tex Avery's BEST work!!!!
LOL I remember seeing this cartoon when I was a kid, and laughing and laughing 🤣
2:03- I think THAT anger character should have been the Emotion character from the Inside Out film.
XD
It's blasphemy to not put the whole cartoon on here!
Oh man I remember watching this as a kid. Even then this cartoon absolutely killed me.
Metaphorically speaking. 🤣
I still remember this from my childhood. Still funny af!
Side note: the late, great, MF DOOM sampled this for his track, "Strange Ways", on his album, "Madvillain".
God, I remember watching this short once on Tv when I was a kid growing up in Egypt so it feels very nostalgic to revisit it
I have been looking for this on UA-cam since forever! Thank you!!!!
Literal goose bumps! 🤣
Goose honks
Do geese get people bumps
Instant buy for me! Been waiting so long for these gems in high definition!
This was terrific. Unfortunately it was cut short, but it was still fun
I just saw this for the first time in my life this is HILARIOUS OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!
HILARIOUS AN ENJOYABLE WATCH!!! THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD!!!
I hear that MGM intro and immediately think the Tom and Jerry theme. Sometimes I forget that other famous cartoons were also made by the same studio
I loved this cartoon when I was a kid. 😄😍
I would love to see the full episode.
Me 2🙂👍🏻
Damn the UPA inspiration here is beautiful, this has a quality that looks so modern as well.
1:11 I JUST CAUGHT it's the dictionary guy... that's funny.
His voice is so soothing
“What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?”
I saw this cartoon 15 minutes ago and it is my favourite cartoon ever since.
This was my favorite cartoon ever....I haven't seen it in 48 years......
i swear to god, i half-exepected the tom and jerry theme to play at the beginning
Same here.
This cartoon is hilarious. One of my all tine Tex Avery faves.
I hadn’t seen this since the late 90’s when Cartoon Network used to play classic shorts in the evenings; thank god for the awesome power of google & UA-cam for letting me revisit this again. I think this is actually a pretty educational short about commonplace vernacular for like an English class.
I remember this .I used to love these cartoons where everything was so literal
The rest of it is something like this: I heard from the grapevine there was something about my case. So, they sprung me. It felt good to stretch my legs. I caught a cattle car to Mary I hot-footed it to Mary’s. I couldn’t believe my eyes. She had a lot of little ones. The man had his hands full, too. All of this struck me so hard, I died laughing and now here I am. So, what do you think? What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?
****That’s what I remember. I loved the Tex Avery stuff, growing up. This was a cartoon for children. I first watched this when I was five years old and later into my teen years. Great stuff!
I always loved this one
Featuring the voices of John Brown (for the "hipster", he used his "Thorny" voice from radio's "ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET"- and a bit of "Broadway" from "THE DAMON RUNYON THEATER").
He also played Digby "Digger" O'Dell, the friendly undertaker on The Life of Riley
He certainly did.
I haven't seen this in 20 years. I thought about it days ago and low and behold it popped up on tiktok!
I can't believe you cut this short like that. I gotta find the whole cartoon. :(
YES!!!!!
2:02 I was beside myself with anger. From inside out!
OH MAN YES! I've always wanted to see this one again
Anyone else here from Madvillain? Just me?
Yeah, but probably years before you. I think I remember watching this cartoon on Google's video site (before Google video and yt merger)
Now we need a short in gen z slang
The entire version was literally on "Toon in with Me" this morning, June 16th, 2023. 🤣 Great cartoon!
I would have loved it if it was the FULL CARTOON
I haven’t seen this since I saw it as a kid in 1980 something. I couldn’t cut the mustard 😂
This is one of my favorites! I also LOVE puns!!😂😁
“What’s cooking?” How’s tricks?” Does anyone say those anymore?
Slang comes and go doc
Garth Davis depends honestly
Garth Davis some do
I always liked "How's tricks."
Hipsters still do, by Golly!
I have been trying to find this one but I had no idea what the title was!!! 😍😍
Shame that it's not the whole cartoon.
I enjoyed this as a child.
Such unique humor 😁
This was My favorite cartoon as a kid!! I hate they cut the rest off!! Boo!!
When you take every word so literally
Oh wow! I thought this was a fever dream of mine!
I just love Rhapsody in Rivets!!
You are referencing the wrong short from wrong animation studio.
