I’m glad you got to experience the American people firsthand. The media would have you believe that Americans and mean, hateful, ignorant and disagreeable people. Like any country, we definitely have those kinds of people but for the most part, the kindness you experience here is completely genuine!

I’m a lifelong East Coaster (NJ) but I’ve visited a little of the South/West and it was VERY cool. So similar but also different in little ways. We’ve got a huge beautiful country and though I’d LOVE to visit Europe, it’s easy to see why some just get a camper van and go exploring in their own backyard - cause it’s HUGE 😂

@@Rhov9 BINGO! Couldn't have said it better myself. I too am from the east coast (born in Boston, but spent my idyllic formative years on a 90-acre farm in southern Maine). To me, America has the best combination of awe-inspiring scenery with the sheer size & diversity of the landscape (including the massive national parks), that it really is conducive to renting/buying a RV van and driving around for months to just see all the US has to offer.
I still have 90% of western Europe that I haven't visited yet (but plan on visiting), but you're right on the money about all the cultures within the US I (and MANY other Americans) have found fascinating. Though I also see the loss of unique cultures/accents within the US due to gentrification, and I find that sad. I don't want all Americans to have the same, neutral accent.

Steven Block, back in '86, after a tour of Israel, I came back home by traveling across Europe on the trains with a Eurail & Britrail pass, and I only had one bad experience in France, which happened when I accidentally left my passport on a train. The person who I spoke with said, "There's nothing I can do!", and walked away. But, in addition to neutral encounters, I had more than 1 very positive ones.

Your comments about "having to learn French again" made me think of my grandfather, who was a translator in the US Army during WW2. He went to war with high school-level French and by the time the war ended, he was so fluent he'd actually forgotten words in English. He died in 2018 at the age of 94 and up until his last couple of years (when he started showing signs of dementia) he never forgot the French he learned.

You're not the first European I've seen on YT who has traveled to the US and made a point to comment about how "nice" we are. For sure, whatever degree of "niceness" we express, it's just common and not something we necessarily think much about. I know that if I'm passing someone in a store or I'm going in and they're coming out, I naturally say hello or smile. I guess it's just courtesy, but I do notice when someone simply ignores me or doesn't return the favor, so I can imagine that if it doesn't happen like that in France, it would be noticeable.
I'm not surprised that Niagara Falls was your favorite part; it was my favorite video. They're really stunning to look at, and maybe someday I'll get to travel there and see them in person too.
I'm in Maryland, but I was in the Marine Corps many years ago and did my share of traveling, both across the US and parts of the world. East Asia and Australia, specifically. One thing I would recommend to you, knowing your love of nature and having seen so many of the places you've traveled through your videos, is the Grand Canyon. I saw it once on my last drive from California to Maryland, and Marie, I guarantee you'll love it. If you can make it out west, please try to schedule a day at the Grand Canyon. I'd bet my right arm it would rival your experience at Niagara Falls, and then some.
    Keep getting well, my dear.

Honestly sometimes I just randomly compliment people when I’m out and about 😂 because it makes me feel good to make someone else feel good, even if just for a moment. I’m not out here trying to make lifelong friends, mind 😂 but it kind of restores faith in each other. Being kind is free 🤷‍♀️ and sometimes that small interaction can really make someone’s day. I know when others have done it to me, I always beam! It’s not insincere, like some Europeans might think. Just because it’s a passing moment doesn’t make it unimportant. It’s the little things, you know? ✌️♥️

I was so glad to see you explore so many different places and things. I have heard people comment that they finally got to see the U.S. and the only place they visited was New York City, and that definitely isn't America, just a very tiny part of it. I'm 68 and for many years my work took me all across the U.S. but all I ever got to see were the airports and the building I was working in. 10 years ago I had heart surgery and my doctor put me on disability. My kids were furious, but I packed up my car and a trailer and did a 10,000 mile road trip across the U.S. I camped in a tent or if it was rainy, I stayed in the trailer. I avoided all cities, and just took in National and State Parks and interesting places that caught my eye. So many beautiful places, and as you said, the people were friendly where ever I went. I look forward to your next visit.

What a great reaction. I think we're kindred spirits. I love flight, and nature. I'm an US Air Force retiree having served for 30 years. I wasn't qualified to be an aviator because of my eyesight (this was long before the days of Lasix), yet I've flown in jet aircraft, tankers, trainers, cargo aircraft, light aircraft, sailplanes, and hot air balloons... and have parachuted out of airplanes. Your comment about "convenience stores" almost made me laugh, as Buc-ees in Texas is the ultimate of convenience stores--you'd love it. In fact, I think you'd love Texas. My wife (of almost 44 years) and I have visited all but 5 States in the US and have lived in 14 States, including over 23 years in Texas. We currently live in Colorado (for the third time in my life) along with three of our four "chi-dults" (my made-up word for adult children) and 5 of our 9 grandchildren. We'd be honored to host you to see more of the US for as long you have the time and at no expense to you. Our fourth chi-dult and her family, including our other 4 grandchildren, live in the Atlanta, Georgia area, which is also very exciting and interesting, and time allowing, we'd like to take you there. All you have to do is let us know you'd like to come and visit, and we'll make it happen. My wife and I visited Paris for our 33rd Anniversary, and it was amazing. I never really had any interest in visiting France, but that experience completely changed my perspective. And, for what it's worth, my favorite movie of all time is Amelie. I've watched it more than 300 times, and when we visited Paris we went to visit all of the places that were set in the movie. It was big, big fun, and a trip we'll never forget. Vive la France, and God Bless the USA.

My first car was a Mustang. I think my dad wanted me to have it so I would be more enthusiastic about driving. Most of my friends were excited to get their licenses, but I was not so much, but I really liked my Mustang. It was canary yellow with cream color interior and black carpet. We were not people who were wealthy, but I am always glad my dad wanted me to have a Mustang. I live in West Virginia and I’m glad you like our song.

It's amazing in the U.S. in ways that I still can't understand as why sometimes we can be filled with so much hate and aggression at other times be filled with so much love and compassion.

Bonjour Marie! I'm glad you seem to be feeling better. You actually covered a LOT of area in a short time, and got to experience a LOT of "Americana." One thing that kind of bummed me out is that your "host" seemed to take you to too many "tourist" restaurants/Chain restaurants. I get it, you don't have them in France, but I think you'd REALLY would have enjoyed going to some "mom and pop" places, and I bet they would've loved having a guest from France. I'm glad you go to go to the baseball and football games, I wish you'd have been able to go to the NBA basketball game that was in Paris last week, but oh well, maybe you'll get to go to NBA and NHL games in future visits. Thanks for sharing all this with us! Bonne journee! ~Be Blessed

You know, it's really nice hearing a European, and a Frenchy no less, say what they love about America.
Too often we hear have to endure how deficient our society and lives are, that we are to self centered and superficial. But what we see are everyone wants to come here and/or live here. We have our problems, emotionally and societially but we see and we move in the direction of positivity.
We are about being happy. For ourselves and for those around us. Sometimes too much of it but happiness is the goal.
    Thank you for this video.

I love that you got to go to a Civil War battlefield. And the phonetic way to say "Antietam" would be "Ann-Tea-Tum"
I saw a shot of Harpers Ferry! I grew up there, went to Jr High at the top of the hill in the big stone school. I was in Marching Band and parages sucked because of that hill. I still think it was cruel punishment having marching drills in August up and down that hill.
I learned to swim in the Shenandoah couple miles upstream from where you were when my dad threw me in the river - yup, that's a real thing not just an old story no one really believes - My mother almost divorce him that day but as it turns out, I figured out swimming really quick I guess cause I'm still here.
The difference in people you mention, that's why when you talk to friends who have been to France and ask them all about it, because we're just as curious as your friends would be about America, well, you don't always hear the best comments. I realize it's understanding a different culture, but being nice or friendly takes ZERO EFFORT! But it varies, we have plenty of jackasses here so don't oversell it LOL! And I thought about this and it's kind of like this maybe "Hey, we're Americans, what could we possibly have to complain about" other than we all go through shit in our lives from time to time just like everyone else. Some are having a wonderful day, some are having the worst day of their lives. timing is everything.
Watch out for all that great food. As you could tell probably, no one is starving here, quite the opposite. But come on man! You're French and you're talking about our food? that's upside down in my brain at the moment. Just because we have it doesn't mean you should eat it HAHA!
OH WOW! You went to Shannondale Springs - I still own the family property in Shannondale, 3rd generation, even though I haven't lived there since High School. Did you get to see any snakes? HAHA! Place is loaded with copperheads, rattlers, moccasins and black snakes, but black snakes are cool the rest are poisonous. I don't miss the snakes and strange insects but the lizards are really cool.
Oh, btw, Niagara Falls isn't ALL Canada, it is the border so we get a wee bit of it too~ but Canada is pretty awesome, been many places in Quebec/Ontario. It's not a lot different and talk about friendly, now Canada has the friendliest people man. I have many Canadian friends and it's like this, if you can't make friends with someone from Canada then you are the problem. That's been my experience. If you know anything about beer and hockey? anything at all? they'll love you like family and teach you all you need to know.
It's cool to see your perspective, but you've also an openness about your expectations I think, or at least have conveyed, that you see it for what it is.
I'm really curious what your expectations were to your experience now that you've had time to really look back and analyze this adventure.
I am going on a European trip this summer, my first. To Lithuania to visit friends and I spent so much time studying the country, all the covid years that have delayed it. I'm worried about building up my expectations too much. I was so excited I had my plans all set but it was in 2020 and everything went to hell globally. It's been hard to build up the same excitement. I'm really curious if you dealt with the same type of internal debates.
Nice summary! What's really cool is, you were in my world that I grew up in around Washington, Baltimore. The inner harbour where you were is so nice today, or at least most of it. 20 years ago it was even more amazing. but Baltimore as a whole, it's a bad place.

Marie, I'm happy you got to experience what you did on your first trip to the States. It's kind of like when I first visited your country. Paris is something that's a requirement if you're going to visit France. The Eiffel Tower is something that has to be experienced as well, especially because he was instrumental in the construction of the Statue of Liberty. Yes, I paid a lot to get to the top of the Eiffel tower, but it's one of those things you kind of HAVE TO DO, just like you going to see the Observation Deck at the Empire State Building. Most of all, I'm happy that you found your interaction with Americans to be so positive and memorable. It's good to make a good impression on tourists. After all, our nation is comprised of people from all over the world who chose to leave behind what they had and see what they could make of their lives here in the US.
I hope your results reveal something simple to fix so you can get out there and see more of the world. We know how much you love exploring the mountains. Perhaps your next trip here in the US can be to explore Colorado, and the Rocky Mountains. After all, John Denver sang about Colorado too! Take care Marie and keep smiling!

I am glad to hear that you are feeling better. I am also glad to hear that you will be coming back to the US soon. There is so much to see and experience in the US. I hope you get to visit St Louis on one of your trips here. I guess I should mention the Gateway Arch. You can ride an elevator to the top of the Arch and look out at the city on the west side and the river and miles of Illinois flat land to the east. St Louis was founded by French explorers and it became the Gateway to the West for those who were seeking a new life. It is good that you are young and can see so many wonderful sights. I hope to be moving to the St Louis metro area this summer. Maybe I can see you there someday.
