I agree absolutely with the other reviewers - Mravinsky probes the nobility, the power, the agony, the desperation, the struggle, the delicacy, the mystery, the dance, the suffering, the hopelessness, the redemption, the catharsis, the death and transfiguration, and the final valedictory triumph/defeat of the symphony as I always dreamt, but never dared to hope, I would hear it.
    Stupendous.

Would you say this symphony coupled with Nielsen 5th would give you a very good day all in all.

@@abcd1234.... Thank you for sharing your thoughts! - although I’m not sure what would be left of me after that double-bill!
I vividly remember my first encounter with Nielsen 5, at the Proms, on September 11th 2002 - on the first anniversary of 9/11, the devastating emotional intensity of the music was astonishingly cathartic, and left me in bits. And the encore, Ives’s “The Unanswered Question”, crushed what bits of me were left!

I have almost no hesitation in saying this is the greatest orchestral performance of any classical piece of music I have ever heard. The playing of the Leningrad orchestra reaches levels of eloquence, majesty, power, inspiration & incandescence that are simply beyond belief.
