I followed your technique for a brick wall in a diorama I am building and the results are great - I got a lot of compliments on it. Thank you for this excellent tutorial! The Apple Barrel paints are so inexpensive and very easy to use. I added just a dab of Vallejo's drying retarder with water to dilute the mix a bit, and I was able to work at an easy pace without the paint gumming up on me or clogging the brushes.
I tried to make darker joints with gray wall filler and a bit of black paint. The other tutorials advise a paper towel wipe. But your damp towel method made things way better and easier. Thanks!
Just so you know...each row of brick or block is called a coarse. Each line between the bricks or blocks is called a joint. Just a tiny tip of information from a former brick Mason who also loves art.
I bought a wood burning tool for this very project, and wow I love using it for the lines. Very clean lines and no mess with the blade. In saying that, awesome looking wall! Great work!
@@OilersWorkshop Definitely, I just happen to see a lot of realism in your tutorials on concrete and brick painting. I usually look at a few tutorials but yours are extremely well presented and take some of the stress off of that first attempt. Thank you very much. I would love to see maybe a dio of the month like you used to do before.
I’m always in a hurry too. I use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process. I don’t dry it completely just enough to get it to a point when I’m wiping down not as much of the color is wiped off with the micro cloth.
Amazing informative video! Would it be OK to seal with say a future acrylic floor finish, or would that be too glossy? I'm thinking the spackle would negate that gloss anyway. Or maybe just use a matte acrylic sealer? Thanks
You can use matte acrylic but just be aware water based sealer over water based paint with water based spackle can cause reconstitution of paints and smear, so just experiment on a small test piece first
I love all of your work, nan!! I sit here and see all your videos so I can learn & use in my dio’s… do you mind telling me the measurements for this wall, please? Both the length & width, but also the size of the bricks, please? I see that they’re not the regular 0.5 inch by 1 inch… at least to me it doesn’t look that way, I could be wrong… Also, if I can suggest a “how to” video on how you design & cut those accents & archway please? Thanks again
Thanks man, the bricks are 1/4 inch tall I don’t know what the dimensions are lol should be about 22wide by 14 tall, I encourage you to start with a door size (3x7) and then extrapolate from there to get measurements your comfortable with, the arch is just carved on n a separate piece of foam and then cut off and glued on, really straightforward
How do you create the protruding areas? Like the brickwork along the building? Thinner foam? I can only find the insulation foam in 1” thickness. I build ww2 1:18 dioramas. I’m a beginner, but already selling them quite fast.
@@OilersWorkshopthey’re no where near as good as yours. But I make mine ww2 1:18, and they sell very quickly. Would getting thinner foam and gluing on top be ok? Thanks.
fabulous work! the arch bricks and the others that were not part of the wall per se, but decorative - how did you make those? is there a video where you created the wall itself, specifically the arch?
I say at the beginning how and there is a series I do called art in real time where I showed the technique live, the first episode of that diorama the Chinatown diorama is available there, the other 16hours is in my members only section. I’ll do a JUST brick carving video eventually also but for now that’s what’s here on the channel
Watch my diorama supply shopping video #1 it shows you exactly where to do and what to get, there is also a link in the description for ordering some smaller 12x12 pieces of the same foam I use
I have no idea what specific brand or thickness it is but, I would say probably not, because it’s too water based, but you should try it on a sample piece and see how it goess
Just keep going and learn from the results, you might like the way it turns out, not every brick needs to be done with a black undercoat, although some primer or flat base coat is preferable, sometimes it’s fine without it too. Just keep going and see how it looks

That is WONDERFUL! On all fronts, thanks for sharing your cool method
Yikes how did I miss this one! I'm glad I went back to refresh some technics

I’m glad it worked out for you 😄
Great video thanks
You’re welcome thank you
Excellent work, that brick wall and door would be perfect for an automotive diorama I'd like to do. I love the backdrop of an old garage.
Awesome! Thank you yes this would vibe well with nice cars

Neat
Holy **** wow, that's realistic brickwork! Good enough to use for hi-end wargaming!
Man I can't wait for the AT-AT!
Me either
great work dude.
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Amazing, the level of detail and realism is so incredible you can really just enjoy looking at the piece over and over.
Thank you so much
I’ve tried for ages to work the word “verisimilitude” into use. Your lateral, horizontal brush strokes lends verisimilitude to your diorama.
Bravo!!
Lol, success!
Looks great. Gives me some ideas on how to paint my mini cinder block tiny building.
Have fun!
You are a great teacher. Very clear and contextual. nice work!
Thank you

Thank you so much! Yes I love using my wood burning kit on foam
I love the wall plus the painting technique was awesome. I want to try this . Thanks so much for inspiring me.
That was awesome, thank you so much 😊 ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
I tried your method for my first time brick wall and it turned out really good! Thanks!!
YES!!! amazing I’m so glad
It looks so real. Hard to believe it’s foam. Great work!
Thanks
Love it, looking great.
Thanks
👏😎 excellent tutorial 👍
Thanks
Outstanding tutorial. Thank you
Thank you
Super cool!!
😄
Was working on a wall this week as well! Thank you for sharing a process and very great techniques I want to try with future projects!
Awesome
Love your work! You're an inspiration! I'm going to have to try this technique out the next time I'm doing brick work.
Thank you! Do it!
I use gel acrylic medium paste...but I bet the spackling is cheaper and may be easier to use a a grout/mortar material in between the bricks.
There is thousands of methods, just depends on what works for you and the results plus cost etc

Excelent work! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks
awesome work, per usual!
Thanks man
Do you seal the foam first before your flat black? Not sure if I missed it if you mentioned that step.
Not necessary at all unless you’re using a caustic paint. I’m using brush on acrylic
Magnifique rendu 🤩👍je me suis abonné
Thank you
Nice. Is that facade from one sheet or did you apply some of the protruding details like the archway? Thanks.
Both!

5/16x5/8

Wow I wish I sold mine fast lol, you just have to cut the foam thinner my man.

@@Drew_L.209 I don’t see why not
I really like the color of the brick. Do you remember the ratio of colors when you mixed them? Also, thank you for the content
I’m sorry I don’t recall. I do that by feel
It’s called a tea wash
Thank you

Just cut them out separately and glued them on, no video
There a video of how you made the wall?

Can I build something like this using blue foam??? I mean it's working with blue foam???
YES
And what kind of material do you use, what is the best i can use, and were can i get it?
Watch my diorama supply shopping video #1 it shows you exactly where to do and what to get, there is also a link in the description for ordering some smaller 12x12 pieces of the same foam I use
Wipe on, wipe off, Oiler San.
Lol sure why not 🤷🏻♂️
Can I use modell plaster the same way?

@@OilersWorkshop cheers m8. Awesome job btw
How did you create the arch?
I cut it out of another piece of foam and glued it on 🤷🏻♂️ it’s just a knife and glue, really not that hard at all
By accident I forgot to paint it black first so what do I do?

It actually looks really good thanks for the advise and thank you for the video👌
